Thank you so much for coming back to Boston even if they never offered you a 4th year. I hope the Red Sox have another great season this year and they keep everyone else just the way it is.
Thanks Mikey.

Curt, what a cool idea…
Mike Lowell, welcome back to the Red Sox. There is no other place on earth like Fenway, and no other team like the Red Sox. And now, there is no other third baseman like Mike Lowell…
We’re still celebrating!

I am thrilled. It may be the day before Thanksgiving, but it feels like Christmas to me!
Thank you Mike!

I would like to say coming from a guy who grew up in western Massachusetts and has been a sox fan through thick and thin, words can’t describe how happy I am to see that Mike Lowell is coming back to Boston. I made the trip from CT to the parade this time after missing 2004 and the support from the fans around town for Mike to come back was very nice to see. I am glad Kurt is coming back, he will go down as an icon in the city, and I am proud to say that I am a lifelong Red Sox fan and support a team that has risen from the depths and really built something very special. Not only are the Red Sox a great team, the organization as a whole has really embraced the city and the fans and given us not only two championships, but a feel that we are part of a family. Thanks guys, and thanks Mike Lowell for coming back, we appreciate what you do.
November 21st, 2007 at 7:35 am
Mike, thanks for resigning with the Sox!!! Thank you for letting RSN know that there are players out there that care about their fans. Looking forward to three great years of cheering you on ( and hoping for more after that! ).
My best to you and your family, Marc

(Thanks, Curt!)
Dear Mike,
It always takes me a little while to get used to seeing a new player in a Red Sox uniform — in fact, I have a rule where I don’t really become a fan until a player has a season or two under his belt. But it didn’t take me long to decide that I was going to like the new third baseman. Time to make it official: I’m a Mike Lowell fan! Where’s my t-shirt?

Mr. Lowell,
Your professionalism and leadership in the clubhouse, crossing racial and cultural lines, is clearly important to both your teammates and your fans. Your play on the field, as a Gold Glove caliber 3b and a RH run producer were vital cogs in the machine that swept through the playoffs this season. Overlooked, to some extent, is your durability. You’ve not been on the DL as a Sox player, and you’ve been able to provide consistent production hitting behind Manny and Papi over the past few seasons.
It is a joy to watch you play, and I just want you to know that our whole family was excited when they learned that you were coming back to the Red Sox. You are part of a special team of men, and your accomplishments on the field and your character off the field make for a wonderful (and easy to root for) combination.
Congratulations on the MVP for the World Series, and enjoy your Thanksgiving!

Thank-you Mike Lowell, and Curt Schilling, for re-signing with the Red Sox. Now we can all go into next season knowing the Red Sox have the best possible pitching staff, infield, outfield and bullpen, and a great shot at repeating as world series champions. What a relief! So Thank-you!!! for the wonderful season gone by, and for your commitment to the future.

Mike, thanks for coming back for 3 more years, I couldn’t imagine you coming back to get your ring next year like Derek Lowe did in 05 in jeans and a jersey it will be nice to see you fighting after you get that ring on April 8 for another one……thanx Mike your the best

Welcome back home, Mike- we’re glad you and your family are staying in the fold. Can’t wait to see what the next three years (and beyond?) will bring- but I know it will be exciting with you in those home whites.
Thanks for all the memories you’ve helped create for me and every other Sox fan so far- and here’s to all the ones you’ll be a part of in the future!

Mike,
Thanks for seeing the forest instead of the (extra green) trees. I hope that when the crowd gives you a standing-O on the first day, you’ll know how happy we are that you stayed.

Dear Mike,
Every team has a player or two that everyone roots for. He’s the guy that plays the game the way it should be played; is passionate about what he does; loves the game of baseball; and appreciates the opportunity that has been given to him.
While the Red Sox have a number of those players on the team, you seem to be the one they look to.
How many “Sign Mike Lowell” chants and signs did we see on Parade Day?
“Nuff said. Welcome home. The hot corner is waiting for you.

Mike-
Instead of thanking you for returning to the Sox (which I am incredibly happy about), I’d like to thank you for a few other things.
Thank you for being an impenetrable wall at 3rd base.
Thank you for all the clutch RBIs and hits.
Thank you for your leadership in the clubhouse and on the field.
THANK YOU FOR BEING A KEY PART OF THE RED SOX 2007 W.S. RUN!

P.S. - I have confidence that I will be thanking (all of) you again a few more times for the last one before your contract is up!

Mike,
I’m sure you’re aware that the entirety of Red Sox Nation, from Larry Lucchino on down to the 2-year-olds in tiny jerseys, are thrilled to see you return. I’m no exception, and I can’t believe our luck to have the opportunity to watch you play for our team for a few more years.
Thanks so much for returning!! You’ll always be a hero to Sox fans, and to me especially.
Enjoy your off-season, and well see you in Spring Training!!
All the Best,

Mike -
Thanks for sticking around, man. That’s a shit ton of money to turn your back on and it’s admirable that you deemed it a worthwhile sacrifice!
There was a boston.com poll going on and it asked why we (the fans) were most excited you stuck around (and why it is better to have you than a-rod), and the number one reason (60%) was because you’re a CLASS ACT. Not the high batting average, not the low(er) price tag, not the fielding excellence. I thought it was an interesting indicator of what the average Sox fan is concerned with…keep it up MiLo.
November 21st, 2007 at 8:20 am
Dear Mike,
It is wonderful from a fan perspective to have you back. We all know the story, the $9 million throw in for us to get Josh Beckett. For a while there in 2006, when Beckett struggled, you were coming into your own in Boston and folks around me were beginning to say that Beckett was the throw in in the Mike Lowell trade!!! Needless to say we’re glad Beckett came to form this year and you stepped it up in a big way, producing in clutch situations when guys were down and runs were needed.
Thank you for an awesome run in 2007 and I look forward to more in 08, 09, and ‘10
MVP!!! MVP!!! MVP!!!
November 21st, 2007 at 8:21 am
Mike,
Obviously, all fans cheer for the laundry — but there are exceptions, as you well know. I am sure you have seen the ovations that former Sox good guys and former Sox champions get. Thanks for ensuring that you will get receptions like that for the rest of your life.
And - going beyond the laundry for a second - it is so much easier to cheer for nice guys. Mike - I know what a good catholic you are. And anyone who quietly puts God first is a good guy in my book. The fact that you were at Mass in Colorado the morning of the final game of the World Series says it all.
Welcome back. Thank you.

Hi, Mike we have been fans since you started in Boston. Seeing all those doubles that first season had me calling you “Smokin Mike” my daughter would roll her eyes. Although this did not stop her from wanting a shirt with your name and number it at the start of the 07 season. Because we live a little outside Boston and can’t just walk over to the Fenway store I eventually had to order her a shirt from the Yawkey Way store. Most retailers had none to be found (somehow I am guessing that may change) She would have been heartbroken if you left, and so would I.
Congratuatlions of the MVP and Thank you for showing integrity so rare these day in professional sports.
I have written on this blog three days in a row and have made a request each time. How about some of the sox going to Foxboro when the Patriots are there and showing off some of those world series trophies. If you were there the crowd would go nuts.
Anyway Happy Thanksgiving. And thank you again for restoring my faith that some players really are loyal to their fans. Roni in Marlborough PS What time do you wake up to do this Curt??
November 21st, 2007 at 8:27 am
I can’t express how happy I was when I found out Mike Lowell resigned! Everyone said J.D. Drew would be that number 5 spot power hitter and you came in and took over that role instead since Drew had a little bit of an off year. We have all seen what kind of years he’s capable of. Its great to have that core team of players that stick around to cheer for year after year. Its safe now for me to go buy my new Mike Lowell, World Series MVP Jersey. We love you! Thanks Curt Schilling for passing these messages and of course for also resigning for another Red Sox World Series Championship.
November 21st, 2007 at 8:32 am
Mr. Lowell,
Mr. Schilling has graciously allowed us to post our thank you’s to you here on his blog page. I was a fan of your when you were in Florida. When I heard you were coming here with Josh Beckett, I was ecstatic. I was not at all surprised at the type of year you had here and was hoping beyond hope that you as well as Curt re-signed with the Red Sox this year.
Thank you so much for being a stand-up guy and remaining here in Boston! Curt, I said the same to you in another post, not to worry my friend. Having all of our most important loose ends tied up now is such a relief and not something I’m used to as a lifelong Red Sox fan. I can’t say enough about the current ownership and management we now have here. Between they themselves, the moves they have made for the most part and the type of stand-up good guys they have brought in and signed is unbelievable.
Life is good right now for Red Sox Nation and the Boston sports fans in general.
November 21st, 2007 at 8:35 am
Mike,
Very very happy and thankful that you and Schill came back - but you both should have held out for a little bit more. We would still have loved you guys! Considering some of the contracts already signed in this early off season and that you are both great players, great club house guys, and fan favorites you both should have / could have gotten a bit more. I’d be happy to have the front office pay Mike Lowell or Curt Schilling what Mariano Rivera is getting paid. But, then, that’s precisely why we love you guys. And, hell, who can complain about the millions you both deservedly make. Thanks in advance for the third ring in six years in ‘08. Psssst…and don’t tell JD, but Mike needs to keep batting fifth.
November 21st, 2007 at 8:38 am
Mike,
Thanks for coming back to the Sox for another year. It’s pretty awesome of you to take a three year deal even though we know you wanted a fourth.
Anyways, all I ask is that you do the hidden ball trick sometime during these next seasons on the team. We know you’ve done it while other teams. Do it for us now.
Thanks,
Dylan

Thank you Mike. I am so impressed by what you’ve done for the team and your fans. I am so impressed by the character that you showed by making a choice that defines happiness and satisfaction as more than about money. You are an outstanding player and a great example to us all. I love the Red Sox and I love watching you play, you add so much to the team.
Thanks so much!

Curt,
Thank you for allowing all of Red Sox Nation to thank Mike Lowell for coming back. We must also say thanks to you too.
For many years I’ve watched the Red Sox, but not until 2004 were we able to walk around with our heads held high. I think because of Mike and you signing back on, we will be able to hold our heads high and be proud of the team that Mike, you and all the other players have made a “name”, a team to be reckoned with.
Speaking for many Red Sox fans, it’s our turn to gloat and we deserve it in part to players like you and Mike Lowell.
THANK YOU, BOTH FOR RE-SIGNING.

mike ~ i know you’re looking at dozens of pages of comments from your fans and supporters right now, and you’ll probably only have the chance to skim through and read here and there, but in case your glance falls here…THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
you have brought a little bit of joy to the hearts of sox fans everywhere. not only did you have a stellar season, and a post-season of which most players can only dream, but as others have noted, you bucked the professional sports trend and bypassed a more lucrative contract to remain with the good guys. between the actions of you and curt this past week, you both have helped lifer sox fans over the betrayal we felt after a certain sell-out left our center field for the evil empire. i know you don’t harbor the same ill will toward those damn yanks as the rest of red sox nation does, and i understand your reasons, but it would have a nightmare come true if we had to see you in pinstripes next year.
so, on behalf of nation members everywhere, thank you for your commitment to your teammates, your fans, and to many future world series victories in those wonderful red socks!
November 21st, 2007 at 8:56 am
Oh well, I must join this parade of thanks, Mike. I admired you a lot in 2006, loved you even more in 2007 (yours was the 2nd Globe photo I perched in the corner, other being Tek) and bought a Lowell shirt at end of October (my anticipation of your return). Your quiet, steady and dignified yet very enthusiastic presence is such a gift to the team in addition to your playing skills. You, Curt, Tek and others are such wonderful positive role models for all the kids — it’s just really great that YOU chose US this time!! Looking forward to spring.

Thank you for showing us what kind of man and baseball player you really are by taking less money to stay in Boston.
To me it shows us that not everyone out there is money hungry like some other former Sox free agents.
Looking forward to the next three years with you at the hot corner.
And a thanks to Curt for doing this as well.
November 21st, 2007 at 9:05 am
Hello Mike,
Surely most sports fans ifind it quite impressive that you chose what you viewed as best for yourself and family over money…… a lot of money.
Bill Burt from the Gloucester Daily Times succinctly said it all when he posted this:
“A-Rod is not Boston.
Lowell is.
Everyone, especially Lowell, got this one right.”
Congratulations to you and may you prosper and receive the recognition that you so richly deserve.

Mike,
Good to have you back. As I posted here on Curt’s blog a few weeks back, theres certain players who say “it isn’t about the money” and they actually live up to those words. It started with Tek, Curt continued it, and I just knew you were cut from the same cloth.
When you and Josh came to Boston in the trade, I told my brother “You watch, this is going to be as much about Mike Lowell’s contribution to the team as it is Josh Becket’s”. Here you are, Series MVP. Glad to have you here! Proud to point you out to my kids and say “that man stands for something”.
November 21st, 2007 at 9:12 am
Great to have both of you back! I know a lot of people were getting concerned that we might not get Lowell back at third. Many happy Red Sox fans now in my area of Maine
November 21st, 2007 at 9:13 am
What a special year for me! Simply because my 8 year old daughter discovered baseball at the start of the post season and became totally immersed in the Red Sox. I spent two weeks explaining everything from the rules to the game to who was who on the Sox roster.
My daughter is now a Red Sox expert, she even knows the numbers on each players back! What crowned it off for me was when she called me at work and informed me that Mike Lowell was coming back and she found this information on mlbtraderumors.com!! She is counting the day’s to her first trip to Fenway Park to see Mike Lowell…… So Mike - thanks for coming back and being a special part of my daughters introduction to this wonderful game.
Cheers,
Jim

Mike:
Thanks for coming back to the Sox. Having you and Curt sign on again has made this a great off season — great to have you back and great to have the team largely intact to defend. That took alot of guts to turn down the extra year, but I am sure it will work out for you in the long run. There would seem to be a very good chance that in 3 years you will again be positioned for a large contract, and it actually could work out better for you that you are not on the hook for the 4th year. Maybe you will end up with 2 consecutive large 3 year contracts instead of 1 large 4 year contract, and the only way to know for sure is to project yourself into the future, and no one I know has figured out how to do that. So you did the right thing making a decision that will make you and your family happy, and those kinds of decisions tend to work out for the best anyway. Twice in my career I almost left my company to work elsewhere, solely because of $. I ended up staying and it turned out that I was not only happier, but also did alot better financially sticking around. All of us are hoping this turns out for the best for you too. We all appreciate you staying in Boston and are proud to have you as a member of our favorite team. THANKS!
Mark

I just wanted to say thank you to all the Red Sox players for making Boston the premier place to play in MLB. Players do not come for money or fame, they play in Boston because they love the game, the town and thier teammates. Thank you to Curt and Mike for reviving the real reason to play and to watch baseball. The dark cloud over baseball consisting of steriods and huge free agency contracts has been significantly brightened because two Red Sox signed contracts that reminded all fans why we go to games and why we watch on TV.
November 21st, 2007 at 9:21 am
Good idea, Curt. Mike, you’re one of the good guys…I’ve always known that. Thank you for proving it! You and your team gave us Sox fans in Colorado such a thrill this season, and we’re looking forward to next year!! Thank you so much!!

Dear Mr. MVP Lowell,
Thank you for coming to an agreement to stay with the beloved Red Sox. I have followed your career a long time now and cheered on the Marlins when you were on that winning team when our beloved team was not in the running. You are an example of the perfect all around baseball player in so many ways but the class you show on and off the field stands out the most.
Please know that if you had not signed with the Red Sox, all of Red Sox Nation would still be a fan of yours! The fans here in Key West, Florida think you are the icing on the cake! We agree with you that this is the dream team… not only for it’s athletic abilities but for the comradeship of the players. Continued best wishes in Boston. Thank you. Thank you.
This has been the most stressful post season I can remember! I can get up in the morning now and not speak the words “Did Mike sign yet?” I don’t have to hold myself back from bugging Curt on his WONDERFUL blog! I can high five, giggle and smile with fellow fans saying “Oh Yeah… We’re the team…. Spring training here we come!”

Mr Schilling and Mr Lowell,
Thank you for what you have done for the Boston Red Sox. I am very excited to see both of your work ethnics back in Boston. I really admire both of you, both of you never let down after a bad year or comments that said you were close to the end of your career. Mike Lowell makes the best plays on the hot corner than anyone does!!
Schilling, good job on transforming yourself from a power pitcher to a new type of pitcher.
Lowell, good job on bringing back your swing and keep on putting dents in the Green monster!
Best of wishes and luck in 2008!
Happy Holidays

I’m certainly glad you’re coming back. It’s a privilege to be able to watch a true professional such as yourself in my home city. It’s also a great feeling that Boston is a top destination for talented ballplayers.
Congratulations to you and your family on your new contract, and here’s hoping you have a happy and healthy three years here.
November 21st, 2007 at 9:28 am
Hey Mike,
Thanks for coming back! Thanks for showing us that working with good people and a good organization is so much more important than the final dollars and cents. Have always believed that you will show truly great stuff and you did that when it counted. Have faith that you will continue to show how great a baseball player you are both on and off the field.
Have another three great years!
November 21st, 2007 at 9:29 am
Mikey Lowell, what can I say? When you first came to the Sox in 2006, I liked you immediately! I didn’t know much about baseball stats wise then, but I think your positive vibe on and off the field spoke for itself; it is one of your greatest attributes. Throughout your 2 seasons here, I appreciated your eloquent speaking skills during interviews, etc; you’re one of the smartest baseball players in the league! I also loved how you got along with so many different kinds of guys in the clubhouse; your bilingual skills are envious! Now we get to keep you for another 3 years and enjoy all these wonderful things, baseball and non, again!
After watching most of the games on TV, I finally got to see the June 18, 2006 Sox game in person. You guys were playing the Braves and Schilling pitched a stellar game. However, you didn’t start, and I was so disappointed. But then you came in for, surprise surprise, a clutch appearance! You delivered! I guess it was hard to hear me scream, “I love you Mike Lowell” when I was in the nose bleed section of Turner Stadium…
Then came the April 22, 2007 game against the Yankees. I flew all the way from South Carolina to see that game, and you launched 1 of 4 straight homers and then one single homer! WOW! I brought my sign that said, “I love Mike Lowell! Gold Gloves are hot.” Now I have to change that to “Gold Gloves and clutch hits are hot.” Of course, in the nose bleed section of Fenway (is there such a thing?) ESPN never put my sign on TV! I bought my first Mike Lowell t-shirt that night at the Yawkey Way store. The last game I saw in person was the Memorial Day Weekend Saturday game against the Rangers in Texas. I had family kind enough to fly me out to visit and take me to a game! We didn’t get there early enough for batting practice as I was so hoping for a picture or autograph! Maybe during Spring Training?
In short Mikey, thanks for coming back! Words cannot express how happy I, and all of Red Sox Nation, am. We appreciate you beyond words for everything you do, on and off the field. Thanks again! Let’s go and get ‘em again next year! Let’s go 2008 Red Sox!!
Your biggest fan in SC,
Christina
PS - Curt, you rock, too.
November 21st, 2007 at 9:34 am
I try not to get attached to players because baseball is a business and you never know where they’ll end up (JD - Dec ‘05), but I quickly latched onto the Mike Lowell bandwagon and I don’t even want to tell you how I was going to react if you didn’t come back (LOL). Thank you for re-signing. I hope RSN doesn’t let you down. I will be there on opening day when the Fenway Faithful give you your much deserved standing O! Congrats on a terrific season, WS MVP and for coming back!
To Mr. Schilling - I address you as Mr because I think that you have earned the respect as well. I would also like to add my heart-felt thanks to you. I wanted to see you end your career with Boston as badly as I was hoping to see “Mikey” back. Thank you for your loyalty to Red Sox Nation and thanks for offering us this opportunity to thank both of you.
With baseball being shoved down our throats this off-season from other teams that this is a business, it’s WONDERFUL to know that you chose sentiment and the love for the team and Red Sox Nation. I can assure you that you have our unending appreciation for the rest of your time in Boston. (Well, the real fans anyway, the arm chair QB’s are another story.) RSN can go into ‘08 with heads held high because of men like you!

Mike,
As a loyal member of the Nation, I can’t even begin to express our gratitude. First of all, for your incredible play this entire season. Secondly for your leadership in the clubhouse and also for the way you have embraced the Nation. It is great to see a person of your integrity leaving money and years on the contract table to show your loyalty to a group of people who have the utmost respect for you, both as a player and as a person. It also goes to show that not everyone is a sellout who cares more about money than anything else. Best of luck (not that you or the Sox need it), and we look forward to seeing you hoist another trophy in the very near future. Congrats, you deserve everything you’ve gotten.
November 21st, 2007 at 9:50 am
Curt,
First of all, it’s great to have you back and thank you for giving the fans a forum to talk directly to our beloved Red Sox through. Truly an incredible idea by a truly great man!!!
Mike,
I want to take this opportunity to thank you for realizing just how much you mean to Red Sox fans. We all know you could have gotten a sweeter deal with more time somewhere else. But there is no place where you will be admired as much as you are here in Boston. We, as Bostonians, know we have a reputation for having a “what have you done for me lately” attitude, but I think that has slowly, maybe very slowly, gone away. Your leadership on and off the field are second to none and we Red Sox fans truly appreciate what you have done and will continue to do for at least 3 more years.
Thank you!!!
On a lighter note, let me ask if you realized that the short porch in left field may have had something to do with your career best offensive season?
Let’s be honest-it had to be in the back of your mind!!!
Anyway, Thanks again for coming back to Fenway for three more years, and don’t worry abouthat fourth one, just hire Schill as your agent and he will get you a nice one year deal when the time comes!!!
Thanks again to both of you!!!

Mr. Schilling, you are one great guy, thanks for being a first class individual. Thank you Mr. Lowell for coming back for another three seasons with the Sox. We all know you could of got more money from another team, but it shows were you are as an individual and a player to come back. Good luck in 2008 and keep working hard.

Thank you Curt for staying in Boston and for letting us post to Mike. I’ve been a fan of yours since long before you came to Boston and appreciate what you’ve done for this team and appreciate this opportunity!
Mike, thank you so much for staying and honoring this city, your fans and your team. I’ve been a fan of yours since day one and am delighted to have you stay. I look forward to watching you play for another 3 years!
Holiday Blessings to you both and to your families!

Mike,
I’d like to think that you passed up more money elsewhere because the best baseball fans in the world live here. Or that you wanted to play in front of a sold out crowd at every home game. Or that you wanted to be part of the Red Sox tradition. Or maybe that you just thought you had a chance to win another ring. I suspect it had more to do with the guys in the clubhouse though. That’s okay. Whatever the reason, thanks for staying. Red Sox Nation is better for you being here.
November 21st, 2007 at 9:55 am
Thank you Curt for doing this..my family is thrlled that you will be back next year.
And to Mike Lowell…
Thank you. It’s inspiring to see players who don’t always put money first. Curt and Mike, you are setting an example of the kind of athlete that I would like my sons to look up to. So often sports news is filled with stories of greed and bad behavior.
In these days of free agency when ridiculous amounts of money are offered, it takes a special person to resist that temptation and see what really matters. I sincerely hope that you realize what a class act you are. I wish you all the best!
November 21st, 2007 at 9:56 am
Mike,
Thanks for resigning with the Sox…you are a class individual along with all the Sox! So from all of us in Red Sox Nation we applaud you and your choice to remain with Boston.
November 21st, 2007 at 9:58 am
Thank you Mike Lowell for coming back to Boston. You are a class act and an amazing player and we are all happy that you are coming back. To actually think that there is one player (let alone two) on your team that is willing to leave money on the table just to return back is amazing. With all of the things going on in baseball and all of the big contracts people are getting (pay-rod) it is refreshing to see a player stay because they love the team and the city and not just go to the team that offered them the biggest contract (damon). Anyway, welcome back Mikey and I look forward to seeing you play in Boston for the next three years!
November 21st, 2007 at 9:58 am
Thanks Mike for returning to the Sox. I must say that this century has been very good to New England fans. Thanks again
November 21st, 2007 at 9:59 am
WOW man i cant beleive that Mikey left 13 million on the table….and after that career year you had im glad that you didnt take the money that you could have gone that really shows how much you want to be back to boston. Glad Mikey’s back.
November 21st, 2007 at 10:00 am
Wicked awesome idea, Curt.
Mike, you could have taken more money to go elsewhere. But you decided to stay here.
You did just what all fans always ask. I sure hope you’ve earned everyone’s respect and gratitude around here. I’ll be super upset at any Sox fan who boos you, even if you do commit two errors within a week.
Thanks for staying. Congrats on the MVP and on the contract!
November 21st, 2007 at 10:01 am
Mike,
Simply put….THANKS.
Nice to know Red Sox Nation hasn’t made your experience here unbearable. My wife and I look forward to watching you “do your thing” for the next 3yrs.
Curt,
Thanks for the space and forum.
Thanks again!

Welcome Back Mr. Lowell !! You’re truly a class act and Boston is lucky to have you !
November 21st, 2007 at 10:07 am
Thank you, Mike, for showing the baseball world and its fans that everything doesn’t have to boil down to money. You are, obviously, a good man.
We’re all so thrilled you’re back!
I hope you and your family have a very happy Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year!

November 21st, 2007 at 10:09 am
Thanks Mike,
Thanks for being the type of player that baseball has been looking for. We all understand that it is every players option to check out the free agent market and we are glad that you did. Deep in every Boston fans heart is what you don’t see around all of the league, its one word, called “PASSION”. The 2007 Red Sox Team enhanced that for all of us, and we thank you and the rest of the guys. When a World Series can bring tears to a grown man, thats when you know it is special. I would also like to thank you for the great picture I have of you and your daughter from the celebration parade. I wish there was a post here where we could all share the pictures we have captured of the heroes of our game, because Curt and yourself are truly two of them. Thanks and keep up the good work !!
P.S. - Do me a favor and duct tape Manny to the dugout post like they use to do to Pedro !! LOL

Thanks, Mike, for coming back to Boston!
I can’t imagine you in another team’s uniform. I know you haven’t always been a Red Sox player, but from the way you play, you sure wouldn’t know it by watching.
Thank you for dedication to this city, and this team, and your teammates - and thank you for WANTING to stay. We certainly love having you. 2007 wouldn’t have been as special without guys like you on the team.

Mike,
Living in Lincoln, Nebraska you would not believe the number of Sox and
Lowell fans. I’ve been an associate principal in a middle school for 13 years.
Two years ago I was offered a SUBSTANIAL increase in pay to work for a
company called Talent + almost double my current salary. It only took me a
few days to decide that I loved being around kids. You should the baseball
that it is truly not about the money but what is right for you and your

Curt,
forgot to mention - I CAN’T GET THE WOMEN AT MY JOB TO SHUT UP ABOUT THIS GUY! Three co-workers in particular swoon at the thought of him. The name “George Clooney” is often heard when they talk about Mike.
Regarding the previous post about politics…I don’t get the impression Mike is a political guy, but I do believe he is NOOOOOOOOO fan of Castro. Considering the Cuban-American transplant community in southern florida vote overwhelmingly Republican, I think you and Mike have more in common than just the team you play for. Sorry Massachusetts.

Mike, I doubt that you’ll read this comment as there will probably be hundreds by the time mine gets here. But I just wanted to say anyway that my previous admiration for you has increased ten times over with your decision to stay here. I hope you realize by now how much Red Sox fans appreciate you as a person and a player. You are a true class act and you have been since the day you arrived here. I loved the story of how you and Dustin brought the food to the people in the ticket line. All the best to you and your lovely family.

Dear Mr. Lowell and Mr. Schilling,
I wanted to thank you so much for all of your efforts both you and all of your team mates have given to Red Sox Nation over the years that you’ve worn the Red Sox jersey. It has been a pleasure to watch, root and admire you both on, and off the field.
Back in the early 70’s I became a Red Sox fan and my father brought me to see my first game in 1975. I got to see Yaz, Fisk, Rice, Lynn, Bommer, El Tiate, and so many more great players. It was a memery that I hold very dear to me. I got to pass along our love for the Red Sox to my son, and in 2003 he got to see his first game. It was as he put it, ” The bestest day of my life”. He saw Pedro, Tek, Manny and Big Papi and all of there great teammates.
He soon had to learn about trades, free agency and how they can take away the players you root for, such as his favorite player Nomar. I know that the effects of a trade, or changing teams through free agency are felt far worse on a player and his family that us fans, but the effects on my 8 year old’s world were harsh. He has learned to move on and now his favorite players include both numbers 25 and 38.
It is for him that I want to thank you for putting off more money and longer security and remain with Red Sox Nation. Countless young eyes can look out to you on the field and beam with pride and admiration, and cheer you on to hopefully many more wins and if were all lucky enough many more championships.
Thanks again, and enjoy the Holiday seasons with your families.

Curt, what a great idea. Thanks *so much* for the opportunity to send word to Mike. With all the chatter back and forth on the web I was hoping there would be a way to put some words in front of Mike.
Mike, thank you so much for staying. I was hoping that this wasn’t prophetic:
http://groups.msn.com/DaughtersofKevinYoukilis/shoebox.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=509
(Taken by one of my coworkers when we were at the parade.)
I sometimes feel like you guys ‘pass through’ the Red Sox as temporary custodians of ‘our’ team. Well, I couldn’t ask for a better representative of what we always hope that the Sox are about. (And yeah, I know it’s a business, but businesses can be run in different ways.) I don’t know if you realize or understand what the Red Sox mean to us - I don’t even understand it - but thank you for the respect and appreciation you’ve shown for playing on this team.
Even after ‘04 (Thank you Curt!) this year’s team was special, and you were a huge part of that. I know that this was a career/business decision and you didn’t do it for us, but thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! The fans appreciate you - the player and the man - more than you can know, and I promise you will feel that appreciation every single day and never regret your decision to stay.

Mike & Curt,
It is awesome to have you both sign for less money to be with teammates and fans you appreciate. What a big difference the Boston/New England sports scene has become since the turn of the millennium. The Patriots started this selfless “team” mantra back in 2001 and the Red Sox continued it in 2004. Now even the Celtics seem to be coming around to that idea with the acquisitions of key selfless players like KG and Ray Allen.
What a privilege it will be to see the same core team next year. The only problem is that the media (and some fans) are going to accept nothing less than another Championship. Do your best and have fun. My family will enjoy watching a group of guys that we know are doing their best each and every game because they love playing as a team for the City of Boston and New England.
Now, let’s get Varitek’s contract extended another year or two and get Timlin signed. Two great dirt dogs!

Thanks, Curt, for the opportunity to make these comments.
And thanks, Mike Lowell, for your play on the field, your comments before and after the game, your apparent leadership in the clubhouse, and for giving us the opportunity to applaud your performance for three more years.
What must be going through your head this Thanksgiving? Two years ago, you were portrayed as “the guy the Red Sox had to take to get Josh Beckett,” and now you’re the coveted World Series MVP.
We Sox fans all feel we have a lot to be thankful for this year. But, man, you’ve got to be feeling pretty grateful, too, after the season you’ve enjoyed!
Congrats, Mike. You’ve earned your accolades, and you’ve been a pleasure to watch at the ballpark. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
Same to you and your family, Curt. You’ve given a lot to your fans this year, and this blog is high atop that list. Thank you.
best,
Tom

Growing up South of Boston, the first Red Sox game I saw was in August of 1946. I can still recite the starting line up and batting averages of that AL championship team. In those days, it was radio only and with the use of your imagination, you created heroes. Naturally my first was Ted Williams. Through all the long years of winless suffering, it was the “heroes” that kept us going. After Ted stopped playing, I picked a different hero every year and the very first thing in the morning, I still check the sports pages to see how “my hero” did the night before.
In the ’80s and ’90s we lived in South Florida…where my son, the same age as Mike Lowell….played baseball. My son played against Mike Lowell and a guy by the name of Alex “what’s his name”. We have several pictures of these kids on the same field in High School and College games.
Starting in 1999 when he was traded from the “damn Yankees” to the Marlins, “my hero” became Mike Lowell and he will continue to be. When Mike came to the Red Sox in 2005, I was exited beyond words; he has become the heart and soul of the Red Sox nation and he will be the last baseball hero for this old timer.
Mike and Curt, thanks for resigning! Much of the heart ache of not resigning/or trading magnificent players over the past 60 years has been wiped away for the “nation” by the resigning of Mike Lowell and Curt Shilling.
Go Sox!

Mike,
Going to keep it short and sweet here. I big thank you for coming back to RSN. As you’ve seen while playing for this great team they are truly a team. That’s the great thing about New England sports, all the teams here have so many great players, and they do shine on their own, but they shine even brighter as a team. Thanks for coming back and I look forward to wathcing you play next season and on.

Mike,
First, welcome back. Although you never really left, so I guess this should be more of congrats on your raise and three-year security blanket!
Second, I had the pleasure of watching you guys win Game 4 in Denver. Through most of the early innings the Rockies’ fans were giving me crap about how old you are and nicknamed you “Grandpa.” Of course, after you doubled and scored in the 5th and then lead-off the top of the 7th with a HR, they didn’t have much to say about you or anything else. Thank you for allowing me to enjoy the final few innings with relatively quiet Rockies fans.
Again congrats on the new contract, Grandpa, and I look forward to seeing you around for the next 3 seasons.

Looking forward to seeing the team in Seattle in July!!!!

Dear Mike,
It takes a very special kind of athlete to play in Boston. You have proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are a Dirt Dog. You have won over the hearts and minds of Red Sox Nation with your constant professionalism on and off the field.
I never viewed you as a “toss in.” Sure you had an off year before you joined the Sox. But your previous record indicated that you had potential. And boy did that potential pay off huge for the Sox in your time here with the Sox! Plus your defense is a pure joy to watch.
Thank-you very much for returning to Boston. Maybe you can convince Ortiz to be in a D’Angelo’s commercial so you too can have a guy dressed up as a steak and cheese sandwich follow you too!
Thank-you very much for picking the Sox. You teh roxors 2!!!!

Thank you so much for staying in Boston. Your attitude, your sportsmanship, your play on the field are so important to all of the fans. We realized that you could have gone elsewhere for more money and a longer contract, and I know I at least are very thankful to have you back to help us win another World Series in ‘08!
Thank you for giving Red Sox Nation to be thankful for (I know, that’s redundant), and thanks for the early Christmas present!
Have a great offseason and see you in the spring!

I’m so thankful you came back to a town you have only gotten to know for a short time. I think after this contract you will realize you found home, they might even name a town after you or something….
It was great to see the support your teammates showed as they clearly knew who they wanted as their “third baseman”. You most certainly have many things to be thankful for this holiday as have been thru so much both personally and professionally. What a comeback, I’m sure you still can’t believe these last few months.
Congrats and a big thanks for making the next 5 months about enjoying the previous 5 instead of worrying about who was coming back (both you and Curt deserve my thanks for that one). Hell my wife and I just planned a road trip to Santa Barbara wine country on Saturday so we could listen to all the games on the XM Radio in the car and I CAN’T WAIT.
Enjoy the holiday and see you in April! Dave

Dear Mike,
I’m not a GM, but I am a shopper and I know value when I see it. It shouldn’t go unnoticed that they almost blew this one.
Now that you’re a hometown here, do me a favor and don’t let those jerks on WEEI get to you. They are funny and fat, but know absolutely nothing about sports. They get big names like Tom Brady and Curt to call in, and then they ask them stupid questions.
Happy Thanksgiving and Congratulations to you and your family!

Curt and Mike,
Thank you so much for coming back. You guys are great and someone people can actually look up to in pro sports in so many ways. Living in Illinois it is tough to see many games, but I was lucky enough to see three of the four played at the White Sox this year. Mike, you were on FIRE that series, and I knew this was a special year. I am so pumped to see you coming back. Can’t wait to see you guys play again, and another spanking of the White Sox this August.
Hope all of Red Sox nation has a wonderful Thanksgiving and Holidays. You both have given us so much to be thankful for already. We in RSN are so lucky to have you. Thank you everyone on the 07 and 08 team. I am thanking you ahead of time for what I know is going to be a great season this year, it already is since you guys are back in a Sox uni.

I just want to say thank you for rejoining the Boston Red Sox. Seeing a player resign for less then he would have gotten elsewere is a true Athelete who enjoys the game.
A-Rod and his $350 mil make it impossiable for teh average fan to afford tickets to the games and with out fans you all would look funny playing in a huge stadium. So thats for being a true baseball player and not going after all the green.
November 21st, 2007 at 11:38 am
Curt,
Thanks again for your insights and personal feelings on many subjects. Congrats to you and the team on another great World Series victory. My father never saw one but I have been lucky enough to see both in the last 3 years. It makes me proud as hell to be a Red Sox fan. Thanks to you and the team.
Mike Lowell what can you say? Class guy, great ballplayer, a gamer as I would say, left money on the table to stay here and win a few more championships. Two of the best right here right now. Lowell has been my favorite player since that dive on a bunt attempt back in early ‘06. Super player with a great attitude and loves the team, city and fans. Thanks for the chance to thank you guys. I look forward to the Series trophy coming to my town. I missed it in ‘04.
Best to you all and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Thanks Mike and Curt,
Your abilities, professionalism, and tenacity have helped make Boston, and the greater Massachusetts area into the “Vienna of Professional Sports.”
Mr. Shilling, you do Boston a great honor by giving us fans the last years of your pitching career. We all hope you and the Red Sox have a strong association long after your final pitch. Maybe we will see you in a Red Sox uniform in Cooperstown?
Mr Lowell, in many ways you are a hub that binds the Red Sox together, not dissimilar to Mr. Schilling and Mr. Veritek. Your qualities of leadership, loyalty, and fortitude not only create the luster on the Red Sox logo, but also make you the Pride of Boston.
Thank you both for making the Boston Red Sox the Jewel of Major League Baseball.
November 21st, 2007 at 11:38 am
Mike… Thank you so much for coming back to The Red Sox. You are such an important part of that wonderful chemistry. The best all around third baseman in baseball will now be playing here for (at least) the next three years. Congrats on the MVP!! Oh no!! now what will I worry about until spring?? My team is complete(almost). SIGN MIKE AND DOUG !!

Mike,
We’re thrilled you re-signed. It’s terrific to see a sox team full of guys with such respect for each other. Of course we only get the media view of you guys, but the strength of character, and incredibly positive role model that you exhibit shows through every time. Can’t wait to hear the ovation you get in April. Hope you and your family have a great off-season.

I am so excited for the ‘08 season! The ‘07 series was definately a good way to wrap up my high school career. I’m really pleased that Lowell opted to stay for three more years, and in my dorm, it is believed that the decision that has been made here has shown how he is a TRUE Red Sox player! It’s been a great past season, and i look forward to a fabulous season in 2008.
Thanks for coming back Mr. Lowell!!!

Mike,
Thanks for returning. It makes it so much easier for Lena as she does not have to choose a new favorite player. I was struggling to find something to say that might help me stand out from the outpouring of drooly love you must be receiving right now, and it’s occured to me that that must be something like standing out in a city like Boston which has such a storied history and history in the making, and if you can stand out in a place like this, surely I could find a way to stand out amidst the throng.
Yeah, so much for that idea. Welcome back. I look forward to another 3 years of watching you dominate at 3rd by your explosive combination of double plays on defence and doubles on offense.
Curt,
Everyone’s said this, and I think I might have commented something the same myself on previous posts, but it’s great that you’re coming back and that you’re so much a part of the RedSox fanbase as well as the Red Sox team.
November 21st, 2007 at 11:49 am
Mike, I’m pleased you’re back with the Sox for three more. I have enjoyed watching you over the last couple of years. You’ve dealt with the nattering nabobs who were concerned about your bat speed coming into 2006 spring training and shown them exactly what you’re made of as a player.
You’re a guy I’m glad is on “my team” and I could not be happier you’ve chosen to come back.
Thanks Curt for such a cool idea.
November 21st, 2007 at 11:50 am
Mr Lowell,
If you make it down to my response I’m pretty impressed at your patience, and diligence. haha.
Understand I was a huge Billy Mueller fan, and was pretty bummed out when he was traded. I’ve always admired ball players who show up, play the game right and leave everything out on the field. Billy seemed like a good teammate, great hitter, kept his nose clean and played great 3B. So when you came in, I needed winning over. Nothing personal.
Well, It didn’t take very long. You’ve been a great fit with the team, and this crazy city since the start. I quickly became a fan of your work…
Thanks for your clutch hitting this year, professionalism, time you gave to the fans. That doesn’t get lost or forgotten here. Glad your back.
cheers,
.

I would personally like to thank your George Clooney lookin’ ass. I was ecstatic seeing you traded to the Sox with Beckett and always had the utmost faith in your ability. Here’s to you, three more years, and three more MVPs! Anything less, and Boston Dirt Dogs will eat you alive. Just a heads up.

Thanks Kurt and Mike!
I have been a RS fan since I was 4 years old (and frankly that was a while ago). Despite the fact that I have a RS Pink hat, I am no pink hat.
I love watching ‘my guys’ on the field and I am THRILLED to see both of you coming back. Go Sox!
With the players we have now, Red Sox Nation is perfectly represented. All of you guys are the best. It is so hard to choose a favorite.
Love you all!
Best to you and your familys during the holidays!

Thanks Curt for this great idea!
And Mike…Thank you for coming back to Boston! Your dedication to the team and to the fans is amazing and inspiring! I hope you have a fantastic season and a ton of fun with the team! Happy Holidays to you both, and your families!

Mike
Not much more that I could say that has not already been said. You came to us in a trade that was one of the best the Red Sox have ever made. We thought of you, at first, as the man we had to take to get a young pitcher. You were hot sometimes, and then not sometimes. But this last year you were absolutely special. You became family. Sure, it was your performance on the field that endeared us all to you. But then we heard from all your fellow players about what a vitally wonderful guy you are, we all became sick at the thought of you leaving.
Life is about seasons. Seasons come and go. I thought our season with you was over when I heard how much you were offered. The money left on the table is a remarkable reminder of how truly blessed we are that you choose to stay. (It’s like seeing your girlfriend turn down the proposal of a billionaire. uhmm, at least I think it would be) You became our hero with how you played. You have won our hearts when you choose to stay.
Now go get some endorsement deals so we can make you some money! This is Boston man! We can do that!!
November 21st, 2007 at 11:59 am
Thanks for coming back Mike. I wasn’t sure if you’d be back knowing that you could’ve easily cashed in after such a great year, but you, along with Schill, proved that you are different than most players. You made the decision based on what you wanted to do not on the $ sign. I wanted to get a #25 jersey all last year but didn’t know if you were coming back, now that I know you are coming back it is the first thing on my Christmas list. Thanks Mike!!!

Curt,
Please make sure Mike reads post #78. What a great letter.
November 21st, 2007 at 12:09 pm
Curt, thanks for giving us the opportunity to let Mike know how we feel, although I’m pretty sure he already knows!
Dear Mike,
Those chants about not signing A-Rod and “resign Lowell” were heartfelt and unanimous. Mike, I’m so glad you decided to stay here, alot of our beloved players have left for more money recently and it doesn’t look like it bought them happiness OR a world series ring!!! We LOVE you and can’t wait for opening day to start cheering you all on once again! Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Mike,
There’s so much that I’d like to say, but others have said it first. You contribute so much more to this team than what is seen on the field, and in your clubhouse leadership.
As a Christian, a husband, a father of four, and a sports fan, I often struggle to reconcile my faith with the behavior of athletes. I’m always quick to point out to my family when an athlete sincerely gives the glory to God when interviewed, but too often their behavior off the field betrays their true heart. I look for articles, and stories that illustrate how some athletes can use their fame to bless others through selflessness and compassion. I have to tell you, that for a while there, it was hard to find many examples of this that weren’t soon tainted by scandal.
You are as good of an example of a Christian man as I’ve seen in professional sports. You are a warrior on the field, and you seem genuinely humble, and almost embarrassed by the spotlight. The fact that you put your family first in the negotiations with the Sox, and that you were willing to play for less because of the environment, validates that you are a person of character in my eyes.
I think that you’re on to something about the environment. I witnessed the change about four years ago. Perhaps it’s not a coincidence that it happened around the time Schilling came to town. I’ve had this discussion about the change in demeanor of this team over and over again with friends and family. Everyone sees it. It’s contagious.
I’m not necessarily saying that the Lord is a Red Sox fan, but I do think that he rewards the faithful.
You and Curt are worthy of the admiration of the fans. We are lucky to have you.
Thanks,
Rick

Thanks Mike. I was at Game 4, it was beautiful. You killed it all year and were always the man in the clutch, thanks for coming back, we need you.
November 21st, 2007 at 12:11 pm
People always blame players for leaving for more money. I would ask them, wouldn’t you change companies for more money to do the same job? At a certain point though, a person has to judge what makes them happy. Certainly you would have been more financially secure in New York, but you would have been under an immense amount of pressure to produce with the added stress of a new position. After all the people the Sox have lost to the Yankees, I wouldn’t have blamed you for thinking of your financial security.
Thanks for staying. I will be getting a shirt with your name on the back for my favorite Sox player.

Yeah, Mike, thanks for staying. We all know what you can do and hope to see more of it. I imagine this is the first of more big contracts with the Sox to come.

Okay, well it’s obvious you decided to stray in Boston despite getting better offer. Most of us won’t make what you left on the table in our careers, so the sacrifice you’ve made is pretty damned cool to play in Boston. Obviously, your a fan favorite, a great clubhouse guy and a great ballplayer. This fan is psyched to see you back in Beantown for another three years. Thanks Mike, this lifelong diehard appreciates your sacrifice. Have a great offseason and good luck next year and beyond.

Dear Mr. Lowell,
I was at Opening Day in Arlington on April 3, 2006 when the Red Sox opened their season against the Texas Rangers. At the time, I lived in Houston and would make the trip up to Arlington every time the Red Sox were in town. I knew nothing about you, except that you came to the Red Sox through the Josh Beckett deal. You hit a home run to lead off the 8th. Coincidently, our very own blogger extrodinare Mr. Curt Schilling pitched, and he looked fantastic. And the good guys won 7-3.
When you hit that home run, I was cheering at the top of my lungs, and celebrating with a few other New England transplants that were sitting around me and said, “I like this guy already!!”
I definitely did like you, and have become a huge fan of your’s since that very first game. I missed out on the Rolling Rally in 2004 - even though my Dad said he would fly me up to Boston from Houston for it if I could find a plane ticket under $500 (yeah right!) - so there was no way I was missing it this year! Luckily, I am back in Boston now and work a block away from part of the route. It was the greatest day! And there were few things that made me smile more than seeing Mr. Jason Varitek holding a sign that said “Re-sign Lowell” on it, and prompting the crowd to chant louder and louder “RE-SIGN LOWELL! RE-SIGN LOWELL!”
We absolutely love you Mike. You, Curt, and countless other members of this Boston Red Sox team truly embody what it means to be a professional. I love that you put yourself, your wishes, and the happiness of you and your family first in making your decision, rather than more money. We are very very lucky to have you back, along with the rest of the team of course!
Mr. Schilling, Mr. Lowell - have a wonderful holiday and off-season!
Melissa
Peabody, MA
PS…can you put in a good word with the big guys to bring back Mike Timlin? I have a super soft spot in my heart for him too! Thanks!
November 21st, 2007 at 12:21 pm
Mike,
You are a class act. I was starting to get a bit worried that you might leave Boston for bigger $$$ and I was a little irritated that the Redsox were being a little tight.
Between me and you Mike, the Redsox got a bargain.
You were the heart and soul of this team all year long, and you came up real big in game 4. The home run was huge, but that slide you made was a big play when it happened.
I was there in Denver at game 4, sitting right behind John Ellway and I stayed and chanted for 2 hours after the clinching game. The 1st chant I heard was Bring Back Lowell.
I think Fenwy Park is perfect for you and the fans in Boston are all glad you are coming back for another 3 years. Did I mention that we all hate AROD?
He’s like an ex-wife, you never want to bring them back.
A few years back he stood us up, and then signed with the SKANKS.
Upstaging the Redsox in game 4 of the World Series cost him a few millions and forced him to go back to being a Skankey.
Welcome back Mikey!
November 21st, 2007 at 12:30 pm
Mike, what does it say when Red Sox Nation OVERWHELMINGLY chose you over A-Rod? Character counts. Integrity counts. Yes, production counts too, and you produced HUGE. More importantly, it also says that you have won your way into the hearts of Red Sox Nation as a Red Sox hero. You should be here, you deserve to be here, you need to be here. And you seemed to recognize that.
Johnny Damon? Pedro Martinez? Can anyone forget Damon’s grand slam against the Yankees or Pedro coming out of the bullpen against Cleveland? They were heroes. Now, mercenaries, nothing more. They were there, right where you are, and they tossed it away for a few more dollars that I’ll never rationalize.
I’m proud of you, Mike Lowell, for seeing thru it all and staying with me and Red Sox Nation. And for allowing me to still have heroes.
PS - Ditto for you, Curt.
November 21st, 2007 at 12:31 pm
Mr Schilling and Mr. Lowell, I want to say a huge thank you for staying with our team, the Boston Red Sox. Sure you could have gone after a larger contract for more money with a different team, but you didn’t. As a Red Sox fan for nearly 30 years, I am truly grateful for your loyalty to Boston. Staying with one team for several years is a rare thing.
Thank you, again for staying with the Red Sox. I hope that you have a great off season and I hope that your families will continue to be in good health.

Mike-
Thanks so much for your loyalty and for choosing to stay in Boston where we all think you belong. This past year was so special for so many people and so much of that was because of you. During Game 4, I remember when you got the double to lead off the 5th inning, and I always talk about the 50/50 chance of scoring a run on a leadoff double. I said to my parents, “Watch Lowell fly around on a single and put one on the board.” J.D. got out, but then Varitek did just that, and you flew around and made a dive to home that will continually be shown in highlights forever. I don’t know how many times throughout the year, I asked the question, “How good is Mike Lowell?” after you made another spectacular play on defense or got another clutch hit. I said it once more in Game 4 when you homered to lead off the 7th. Reading these stories and praises above clearly shows that we all love you here and are glad you made the decision to stay. Thanks for everything and enjoy the off-season.

Mike, You must have already figured out that Boston fans are a little crazy. We don’t just follow the game, we live the game. You do not have to be a legendary ball player to gain our affection, you just have to care about the game as much as we do.
I went to the parade, and was screaming resign Mike the entire way. And I would like to take back all those times I thought you did not care about the game the way I did, and all the times I wished we had someone else at third. I guess you had to get use to us, and our field before you were able to flourish. There are so many people writing their own personal “I apologize for doubting you” you might not have to shovel your driveway or mow your lawn for the next three years.
Glad you decided to stay, I can’t wait to see you get your ring. How about joining Curt and Kevin and us in blogging?
SO finally - thank you, thank you, thank you -
November 21st, 2007 at 12:35 pm
Mike,
Ask Curt if we have named a city after him yet, like we did for you in Lowell, Massachusetts. It’s the least we could do for your mature decision to stay.
Glad you did and we look forward to watching you play many more games at 3rd for the next three years. Next contract can include DH if Papi’s knee is to sore.
Where do you you think Schilling, MA will be?
Bruce

November 21st, 2007 at 12:36 pm
P.S,
Curt if not for you the Sox don’t get by Cleveland.
I’m glad to see that you will retire as a Redsox player and I have no doubt that you will meet all of the incentives in the new contract. Without you Curt, there is no World Series win in 2004, and the Redsox faithful are forever greatful to you and I hope the Sox management know it as well.
What you did against the Yankees in game 6, and the repeat performance in Game 2 in Fenway against ST Louis was remarkable, and I don’t know anyone who is as tough as you are.
I was lucky enough to get to see you pitch game 2 in Fenway back in 2004. I paid $1400 and sat 5 rows behind the ST Louis on deck circle. It was the best money I’ve ever spent. Finally I got to see you guys close it out in Denver this year and only paid $1100 to sit right behind home plate…Again money well spent.I was behind the plate for a couple of hours after the game ended, and I watched the way you treated the people, and I was very impressed with how you embraced the fans behind home plate. You are a big time, big game pitcher, well done.
Thanks again Curt.

Mike, Thank you so much for coming back to Boston for the next three years. We are all so happy that you decided to stay in the Hub. You’re an amazing ball player, and a real mensch. You live fairly close to my home, and we often hope to catch a glimpse of you in the Deli or at the Market, but alas, it hasn’t happened yet. But when it does, I can promise you that you’ll get a huge high five from my entire family, because we all think you rock!
November 21st, 2007 at 12:41 pm
Mikey - I freaked out when I heard of your return.. I got about 30 e-mails and 20 voice messages from people congratulating ME on your return, because they knew how big of a fan I am of you and how ecstatic I would be.
I created a small fan page for you.. no I’m not crazy, I just think you’re the sexiest man, in the freaking world. But on your site, I wrote about your past dealing with cancer and also your family’s struggles in Cuba. I get e-mails from people all over the country everyday talking about how they never knew about your past & how amazing you are. I just tell them I know, he’s an inspiration.
I’ve dubbed you the sexiest man in baseball on the site, the George Clooney of baseball actually.. And I get many girls sending me messages, agreeing.
My 2008 life goal is to:
1) attend a game that the man, the myth, the legend Schill pitches
2) to meet you. Or at least get seats close enough to see you up close. And Varitek. He’s my other sexual obsession
Oh, if you just type in Mike Lowell Fan Page in google, your site should come up. Lots of people see it everyday. And I’m glad I can help share your inspiring & heroic life to fans all around the country
If you’re ever single in the future – please marry me.

Mr. Lowell:
Thank you for resigning with the Sox. I believe you were the only option that we had to sign, as well as the right option. Yes, I know baseball is a business and that you could have had more money elsewhere, but I believe you did the right thing. This club needs your bat in the line up. With you, and your defense, the Sox will continue to have the best shot at a title.
Thank you for not pulling a Johnny Damon on us. We adore you and are glad you signed. So, welcome home I guess!

Mike, thank you SO much for re-signing here. I know you were offered more time and a lot more money with other teams, but I’m glad to know you like it that much here in Boston. We got a taste of “sellout” with Damon a couple years ago, and it’s so nice to have some faith restored in professional athletes.

Thank you for being a model baseball player and athlete. In 50 years you’ll still be remembered in Boston for your great service and your dedication to the team, the town, and the Nation.

Mike:
Jason Varitek has always been my favorite player. I was immediately drawn to ‘tek because of his fantastic work ethic and hustle. He may or may not be the best hitter in the line up, but the man can play behind the plate.
Then you came along. At first, you were just another one of the “new guys” for the year. Then you started hitting those doubles in left field (which immediately earned you a spot on my fantasy baseball team). I starting noticing the same kind of hustle in your playing style as I did in ‘tek’s. It was amazing. This year, you really shinned. Your absolutely impenetrable defense at 3rd, and the at bats were absolutely amazing to watch. What was even more amazing was the realization I had that you are such a fabulous human being who seems to be so gracious and humble, and is the epitimy of what a team player is supposed to be. You are one of the best role models out there. In a world of big money contracts and endorsements, there is you. The man who wants to play ball (and earn a little money while doing it).
You reap what you sow, and you sir, will reap more rewards than you will ever know. Thank you for returning. Thank you for being the humble, and gracious team player that you are. We all look forward to 2008. I would have been a fan of yours no matter what team you played for, but I’m just exstatic that your name will be included in the Red Sox starting line up announcement on opening day in 2008.
November 21st, 2007 at 12:54 pm
Dear Mike,
I think it’s pretty obvious from the 128 posts (and counting) that Red Sox Nation adores you. I am a proud owner of a Mike Lowell t-shirt and I am ecstatic that I get to wear it for 3 more years without people telling me it’s old (as is the case with my Pokey Reese shirt). I was in English class when my friend messaged me saying “WE GOT LOWELL BACK” and I let out a not-so-subtle “YESSS!!!” Needless to say, everyone around me thought I was crazy. But after I explained what I was celebrating, they soon joined me.
Thank you for your loyalty, devotion, and commitment. You are a beast of a third baseman.
Here’s to three more amazing seasons,

I was at the 2007 parade at the Park Street Station, about 10 people deep. As Varitek held up the “Resign Lowell” sign that was handed to him, I knew that he was right, and finally the Red Sox brass agreed. Now, just don’t trade Ellsbury!
November 21st, 2007 at 12:55 pm
Thanks Mike. It’s good to see someone who doesn’t put money above all else. You will be rewarded in other ways. Gotta believe that Tony C. is looking down from above with a big smile on his face. You did his number proud. Now go out there and get that repeat.
November 21st, 2007 at 12:59 pm
mike,
after moving out to los angeles for school and having to be in my dorm room alone for the ‘04 world series win, and missing out on the parade…then being out here again, this time with a friend or two cheering me along, and again missing the parade and celebration back home, little things like knowing the great players and teammates you love to watch and cheer on are coming back because they love the sox and boston as much as you do makes it all worth it! maybe i will get to see you back home next year instead of in san diego or anaheim, though i do love being part of rsn west!!
best wishes,

Dear Mr. Lowell,
You have no idea how much it means to Red Sox Nation that you came back for another 3 years to Boston. The difference that you have made to the team cannot even be said enough. I am so grateful that you put aside your desire for a 4th year in order to stay in Boston. Nobody else would seem right at third base.
You are a hero to many, and thank you once again.
-Gabrielle M.

You are a class act and a prett damn good third baseman to boot. You now have the support of Sox fans everywhere, long after you leave the city of Boston.

November 21st, 2007 at 1:06 pm
mike, you’re a gentleman and a scholar. being a transplanted red sox fan in new york, i’ve very much enjoyed ribbing yankees fans about trading you early in your career and comparing our team’s third basemen. i have to admit, though, you’re no a-rod. but lucky for us, you’re better than a-rod because you play the game hard, take pride in what you do, and like playing in best park in baseball. i’m glad you’ll be the man at the hot corner next time i scream my lungs out while watching the sox beat the yanks at the stadium.
and if it means anything, i’ll offer you a fourth year….of gratitude from all the sox fans around the world.
November 21st, 2007 at 1:06 pm
I’ve read the posts above and I have to say that for the first time in as long as I can remember, this post season has no questions. No wondering if your championship team will be dismantled and changed forever. I’ll never forget watching you (Curt) pitch game two in the World Series, Lowell celebrate after the final out and thinking that it may be the same thing when Pedro pitched game 3 in St. Louis.
I’ll never forget it, because I knew that was the last time I would see him pitch in a Sox uniform. I hoped that wasn’t going to be the case with either you or Lowell. But in years past and watching the Sox let Cabrera go to the Angels and Pedro to the Mets, nothing seemed impossible.
Pedro wasn’t getting the years from the Sox and I was afraid they would do the same to Lowell. I’m glad that both sides came to an agreement and Lowell will be patrolling 3rd next year.
Curt, I can’t tell you how glad I am to hear you’re coming back. My nephew is only 16 months and I can’t tell you the countless times I’ve told him the story of 2004, the impossible comeback, the bloody sock and more importantly how that team changed a Nation.
This team has changed a Nation that expected the worse to beinging able to finally victory. I can’t tell you how thankful I am to be able to tell my nephew that he was born in whole different world. Like my dad said, he wished Teddy Ballgame was around to see these teams (he’d still dish out batting advice even at 89 years old).
I’m also glad to see that you’re final curtain call won’t be in another uniform in another town. I hope that the same is said for Lowell.
Thanks again from myself, my family and all of the Red Sox fans here in Utah (yes…we’re out here too). Hope all of you have a Happy Thanksgiving as all of us Sox fans have a lot to be thankful for this year.
November 21st, 2007 at 1:07 pm
Curt, this is a great idea. And thank you too for coming back to Boston.
Mike, Thanks for coming back to the Sox. Knowing that you could have gotten more money elsewhere and choosing to stay with the Sox shows what kind of person you are.
Looking forward to 3 more exciting years!

Hi Mike,
It’s pretty cool you got the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to name a city after you. You must have some serious pull with the Governor. Could you hook me up with a key to the city? I think I might have been born there but my mother told me I was born on a bus. Seriously, we could have some fun with that key.
Congratulations on being named Mayor of Lowell.

Mike: I’m glad you made the decision to return to the Red Sox. It was clearly the best fit for you, and I knew you’d make that decision. The fact you took less money and years to play in Boston shows how much class you have, and it is deeply appreciated by Red Sox Nation, as you undoubtedly know. It is so great to see an athlete make a decision based on things other than money.
You are much admired not just because of what you did in the post season for the Red Sox, but for what you bring to the clubhouse and the young players, and that you defeated the mighty demon that is cancer.
I’m so glad you’ll be back with the Red Sox for three more years. My friends here in NYC at Professor Thom’s, the Red Sox bar, admire you very much, especially my friend Dorothy, who has a small section of the bar dedicated to you. (She’s the biggest Mike Lowell fan I’ve ever known!)
I wish you and your family the happiest of holidays, Mike. Thanks to Curt Schilling for allowing us to do this.
See you in Boston in April!

Mikey Lowell: Thank you so much for re-signing with the Sox. Most of Red Sox Nation knows that you left a BOATLOAD of money on the table to come back to play in Boston. You left more money then MOST of us will see in a lifetime. I want to thank you for that. You are a true leader not only on the field but from what I hear (and read about) in the clubhouse and off the field. You have rejoined a true team atmosphere. The story that I will tell my children is about men of character and honor. From you coming back for less money than you could have gotten elsewhere to Pedroia playing with a broken bone in his wrist for more than a month, to Wakefield’s unselfish attitude to pull himself from the lineup because he knew he was not 100%(putting the team’s best interest in front of his own), to Ortiz playing hurt all season (I tore my lateral miniscus and had 30% of it removed so I know his pain), to Coco being a professional when he was pulled in favor of Ellsbury, to Manny not being a distraction during this season with his/his agents “will he or won’t he stay/be traded rumors,” to JD’s family problems throughout the season but stayed focused, to Youk’s errorless play, to countless other acts of leadership that fans don’t even know about. You are a team built of leaders. In a time of selfishness and greed, thank you again for a great year and at least 3 more to come!
November 21st, 2007 at 1:13 pm
Hey Mike,
Thanks so much for taking less money and less years in the Bean… You have meant so much to this team and nation that it would have been a shame to see you go. As far as I am concerned Fenway’s hot corner is all yours for as long as you want it. Please have a great and safe holiday season, don’t blow the 1.5 mil signing bonus in one place now, ya hear!
I look forward to next season and beyond.
Thanks again,
Dan

Dear Mr. Lowell,
I cannot express how happy I am with your decision to remain with the Red Sox. I have enjoyed watching you play more than just about any other player since your arrival with the Sox in 2005. I look forward to watching you play in 2008.
Very Best Regards and happy Holidays,

Mike- You’re the consummate professional, a true class act. It was so refreshing to read your comments in the Globe today explaining your thought process during the contract negotiations. It’s not ALL about the money. Congratulations on a great season and winning the World Series. Good luck over the next 3 years and beyond.

Big Mike,
When the Bill Mueller era in Boston ended, there was BIG shoes to fill.
Bill was only here a short time, but was loved for his play and his
professionalism.
“Who is this Lowell guy?” we asked. Well, we couldn’t have been
more pleasantly surprised to find out that he was just as great a player, and every bit the “pro” as the the one we had lost.
Thanks for choosing to come back, thanks for kickin’ ass, and here’s to a 2010
where you’ve had yet another great year and want to stay a couple more…….
November 21st, 2007 at 1:27 pm
mike,
Thank you so much for resigning with the red sox..the red sox wouldn’t have been the same without you there. You’ve only been here for a little while but you’ve already made such an impact on the team. Its rare when you find players that are willing to take less money/years in order to stay with a team . But it shows what a great guy you really are for doing that. I can’t wait for the upcoming season i know its going to be even better than this past season.
Have a great offseason..you deserve it!!
Love,
Lauren

Mike — If by making this comment, I just add to the number of people noted at the top of the page who hailed your decision and your return, then that’ll be enough.
But I just want to stress something that many people have mentioned, a feeling that many of your fans, if not most of them, share. Being a sports fan is an odd thing. If we ever stop to actually think about what we’re doing, rooting and cheering for a pro team, and often paying a lot of money to attend games or watch them on satellite or buy stuff with the logo on it, then we might realize we’re nuts. It makes no more sense, on a basic level, to become emotionally involved in the success of a pro franchise than it does to get emotionally involved in the success of any other business. None of us root for a Starbucks shop over Dunkin Donuts… or, heck, maybe some do.
The point is: players like you make it all make sense again. When you take the field — wearing our laundry! — you allow us to cheer for the success of a decent, hard-working, admirable human being. We Red Sox fans, like all sports fans, have had to face the fact that we’re sometimes cheering for men who we wouldn’t want to know in real life… Carl Everett, anyone?
Yeah, let’s not get too sentimental here… everybody knows that ultimately its about performance and production… Kevin Millar is a great guy, and nobody clamored for his return to the team, not with those offensive numbers. We want you to play well, and help the team win, again.
But you make it much, much easier to pay those DirectTV bills, and buy those tickets, and cheer and curse and read the blogs, and invest ourselves in this business, this form of entertainment, because we know that you have always, and will always, be the kind of player, and the kind of man, that we would be proud to know as a friend. You reflect your own worth back on us, as fans.
Thank you for everything you’ve done for us, and for everything you will do, and good luck next year.

Mike,
Thrilled to have you back playing 3rd for the Sox, wouldn’t want it any other way. It’s also very refreshing to see a class act like yourself (and you too, Curt!) take a deal not entirely for the money but for the happiness and comfort of your family. When I read that it looked like a deal was almost in place and you were staying in Boston I officially got pumped for the 2008 season!
Welcome back and thanks for a great season and many more to come.

Curt, Thanks for making this available to communicate with Mike Lowell!
Aloha Mike!
From the island of Maui, we say “smart move” to stay with the Red Sox and we also offer you our total thanks for returning. Enjoy your holidays with your family and friends and we will be watching you in Tokyo.

(AWESOME idea Curt!!!)
Mike, if you haven’t figured it out by now, we pretty much love you. And on behalf of everyone I know, we are beyond thrilled to have you back at 3rd.
My 21st birthday was Monday and I was in class when I got about 15 text messages and three phone calls all saying the same thing - Lowell’s staying in Boston. So I like to tell people you waited so long to decide where to go because you were waiting for my birthday. You know, because that is the only possible reason
This is a tough city to play for. Players who were heroes to kids around here leave to play for more money. It means a lot to us that you decided to stay. So thank you SO very much, have a wonderful holiday season, and we’ll see you in the spring!!!

Still reading? Good….With your new contract and extended allegiance to the Red Sox you think you can throw some game tickets my way?
If not, thats fine, but you’ll have to go behind Scott Cooper on my favorite red sox 3B of all time list.
all the best!

Welcome home, Mike!
Everyone is so glad you’re back. I wouldn’t be able to stand it if you couldn’t get your ring as a Sox player. Thanks so so much for not going to the Yankees. It’s going to be another great year with Youk and Lowell on the corners in ‘08! Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving.

Thanks for being one of the classiest guys in baseball, Mike, and for being on OUR team. I can now take the “SIGN MIKE LOWELL” sign off my rear windshield.

Bill Mueller then Mike Lowell; what else more can you ask for? Thanks for staying with the Sox.
Congrats to you and your teammates.

Mike-
Great to have you back. It speaks volumes of your character that you decided to stay in Boston. The fans as well as the ownership could not be happier. And next season, when we win the championship for the third time in five years, it will all pay off.
Enjoy the holidays.

Don’t often drop a note to the front office but I did that on the last day of the season even before your great world series run, Mike. Couldn’t be happier to see anyone return to the Red Sox, and there have been plenty that I never wanted to lose. You are a class act, and while some may say a lot of money is a lot of money, I’d like to see them leave all that cash on the table and take a different offer. It’s great to see you appreciate the fans as much as we appreciate your performance on the field. Here’s to
a great three years for you, Mike, and for the Red Sox.
Thanksgiving Day dinner opening prayer tomorrow will say thanks for family, thanks for a great meal, thanks for the world series, and thanks for getting Mike Lowell back…Hey, I’m a diehard Red Sox fan…what did you expect!

Mike, thanks for sticking it out with the Red Sox. Great job this year, you won the only MVP that matters in the end.

Hey Mike,
Thanks so much for deciding to stay in Boston. In this day and age organizations get assembled and disassembled so fast it’s hard to actually call them “teams” and really mean it. Your decision to stay sends a great message to baseball and to the fans that a good home is worth staying at.
Here’s to another great year of Red Sox baseball.
Thanks again,
Matt

Mike Lowell,
I have to say you show a loyalty that generally does not exist in sports today. We in the RSN are all glad to have you back with the team for 3 more years with hopefully more championships and dominance.
Also, we can still say we have the funniest baseball player on our team, Mike LoL!
November 21st, 2007 at 1:54 pm
Mr. Lowell,
Thank you. Not for your incredible defensive play, not for your clutch-hitting, not even for your stellar performance in the postseason this year..
I want to thank you, because as a soon-to-be new dad, I’m very paranoid of my child latching onto “role models” or “heros” that are self-destructive, visionless, etc.. Afterall, we live in the generation where Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and Lindsey Lohan actually set the standard for our children’s fashion-sense, vocabulary-slang, and actions.
Over the past generation, athletes have become celebrities also that children have really “latched onto”. And for every guy/gal athlete who try to do something good with that responsibility (eg, Mr. Schilling), there are 3-4 guys/gals who seem to do the opposite (I won’t put any examples here, but we all know we can think of 100 of them).
You are a sight for sore eyes in these crazy-times. You are polite to everyone. You are respectful, even to the media! You always seem to do and say the right thing….like a modern day Dale Murphy-type.
It’s just a breath of fresh-air, and I’m glad you’ll continue to be in a Sawks uni for several more years.
Seriously, you could hit .195 next year with a .850 fielding percentage. As long as you continue to be “the man” off the field, we will always love you, man.
Thanks, -Pete from Newburyport.
November 21st, 2007 at 1:56 pm
Thank you, Mike Lowell, for playing the game with integrity, skill, and passion. Thank you for negotiating your deals with the same. We are all honored and priviledged to have you on the Red Sox. The fans know it, your teammates recognize it, and the organization acknowledges it. You make us proud to be fans of a team with character. Well played as usual, Mr. Lowell.
November 21st, 2007 at 1:56 pm
Postscript to my first comment: I have held off on my Mike Lowell shirt purchase until today….I have sent far too many players to the junkyard by buying their shirts. Today I can finally once again wear #25. (Yes…I am old enough to be a Tony Conigliaro fan…Hate to admit that but its true)
Thanks again for giving the nation the chance to thank Mike for staying, Curt!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families!

Mike Lowell,
You are a class act and a great ball player. Thank you for resigning with the Sox. You have made millions of Red Sox very happy! Continue your success in life and baseball. Hopefully someday I can shake your hand. It would be an honor.
November 21st, 2007 at 1:57 pm
I have to say this Mike,
I was a huge fan of Bill Mueller and when he left it was a pretty sad day. He was a classy player and you could always tell the amount of effort he put into the team just from his on field demeanor. I can say that you have more than made up for his departure. You displayed and performed everything that made Mueller a huge fan favorite. And then you went and lead the team and won the world series MVP. You not only filled his shoes, but you made them a lot bigger.
I’d say that 3 years is not enough but I would take any thing to see you back on the field. Best wishes to you,
- Jeff, Portland

(Thank you Mr. Schilling!)
Mr. Lowell,
Thank you for staying here with us in Boston! You add such a wonderful bit of class and consistency to the team that it was painful to think of you leaving. I’m really looking forward to seeing next season now.
Keep teaching these young guys just how it’s done, eh?
– A happy fan.
November 21st, 2007 at 1:58 pm
I’d like to thank Mike Lowell for being part of a great season. 2004 was for all of the generations that came and went without a World Series win (thanks Curt), 2007 is for the new generation. I’m glad I could show my new son a Red Sox victory. Thanks again for making it happen.
November 21st, 2007 at 2:00 pm
Thanks Mike!
It’s so wonderful to see the dedication you’ve shown to the franchise, the city, and the fans. We all really appreciate your decision to come back here despite some potentially richer offers in other areas. You’ll always be remembered for putting your team and its fans above the money to come back to the place where you wanted to be (and the World Series MVP of course…)
Thanks!

Congratulations Mike and thank you for reintroducing class to baseball. It is refreshing to see that players do have a sense of loyalty to their team and fans rather that the bottom line. Hope you have a great three years and I wish you family well.
November 21st, 2007 at 2:11 pm
Mike thanks for showing the world what a class act you really are. You are the definition of a real athlete. Not only do you impress us with your abilities on the field and at bat, but you continue to shine off the field as a member of a team, of a community, of a nation - Red Sox Nation.
As a teacher of 9 & 10 year olds, I know how important it is for kids to have adults they can admire and from whom they can learn. What a great lesson for a child to learn, putting teammates and fans ahead of money - making a choice based on heart and not just on money.
Your are a role model for many and you do it without fanfare. How easy you make it to be a fan!
Have a wonderful holiday season, after which we will all be looking forward to your return to spring training and then, another championship year!
November 21st, 2007 at 2:13 pm
Dear Mr. Lowell,
Thank you for staying a Red Sox. We all love you, and are glad that you will be banging doubles off the wall for years to come. Tom Brady stayed with the Pats for less money than he would have made on the open market because when all is said and done, he is a team player and the Pats are his team. You have shown the same class, and thank you for that. RSN could not have taken another Damon. Will be in Toronto in April to see the World Champs!
November 21st, 2007 at 2:14 pm
To Mike Lowell
I love watching you play! You took the place of my former favorite player, Bill Miller, who also played 3rd base. I am so glad you stayed with the Sox. You are a class act!
Thanks for re-signing on my birthday! It made my day

Mike,
As a die-hard Sox fan of 30+ years, I have seen great players come and go. I am truly ecstatic that you were able to stay in Boston and provide fans with a great sense of relief.
I know you don’t share the same views of our rivals to the south, but believe me, putting on the pinstripes would have been a major stab in the heart to all of RSN. Our never-ending competitive nature wants us to always beat the Yanks and keeping you at 3rd feels like a major victory.
Thanks again for a great regular season, post season, and off season.

First Off Congrats on the 3-yr deal Mike.
I know im like the 7,584,628 person to say that, and chances are you probably wont even make it this far down this page if Curt does print this out for you. You guys played great ball down the stretch and most importantly when it counted, you didnt have to make it so dramatic w/ cleveland but hey, whatever floats your boat. I watched you w/ the Marlins, since i am a floridian, and ive always thought you were the perfect role player, Theo must have figured that out too. Anyways Good luck in 08′

Hey Mike,
I think my wife was freaked out with me when I revealed my first Man crush. My only saving grace, I was agreeing with a close friend who also has a Man crush on you. I have been watching since 67 and only Dewey and Billy Mueller have compared to you. Grunt work, do your job, shut up and play and actually look like you enjoy it. Trot was good but his game had holes. Keep playing because you love it, not to get on espn.
As for your choice to stay, I had the same decision obviously on a smaller scale. I took a 1/4 hit to my salary in order to do what I enjoyed. In the end I am Happy, the money would have been great but I would have been miserable.
Good call, never look back and enjoy the praise, many of us are sincere.

Amazing year, amazing team.
This is from the song “Tessie.” (the Drop-kick Murphy version)

You know we couldnt live without you,”
Mike Lowell, “you are the only only only!”

Mike Lowell,
thanks for not putting on pinstripes, that was a great relief. and i am glad u took the less money and less years to be with a great team with great chemistry. Its great that we have a team built on the idea of team, rather than a big paycheck (even when ours is quite large). Hope the season goes well, and hope thanksgiving goes great.

Mr. Lowell,
It was a pleasure watching you play baseball for the last two seasons in Boston and it would’ve been difficult seeing you leave but I’m glad you’ve chosen to stick around. By the response you’ve gotten, obviously you know you’re loved and respected here. Thank you.

Mike:
With the thousands of different things that can jade you from this game and the business of the game, it’s nice to see people like you and Curt taking less money to stay in a place where you feel at home and more comfortable in. When I first heard about your talk of wanting to stay here, I’ll admit it, I was a little skeptical. I had heard it many times before but others have left. You put your money where your mouth is and stayed. That, to me, is worth all the respect and appreciation in the world. Believe me, I highly doubt you will EVER be booed here, given what you have done. And if you are, then those people are short-sighted, not too bright, and other non-profane descriptions of people who do not watch enough baseball. Here’s to three more years of some great times.
Also, the day you agreed to the deal was the day of one of my friends’ birthdays. She was pretty down in the dumps due to a bunch of things. She’s a huge fan of yours and to be able to tell her the news as soon as I found out was one of the best joys in the world and probably one of the better birthday gifts I’ve ever given(I’m a horrible shopper). Just know that you helped me bring some joy to someone on their birthday. Take care now and best of luck and good health.
-Mel
Also Curt: Great idea! I think he’d really appreciate this.

As a Sox fan based in Italy who literally loses sleep over baseball games, I would like to send a big heartfelt thank you to both of you, Mike Lowell and Curt Schilling, for proving that there is still love for the game. The words “class act” are thrown around a lot in this business, maybe not always deservingly, but there is no doubt in my mind these are the kind of people I want to play for my team.
Thank you and best of luck for a spectacular 2008.
November 21st, 2007 at 2:34 pm
Mikey, I’ve been talking you up to my Yankees fans friends for days now. Saying how their 3rd baseman was looking for solely money whereas our 3rd baseman realized it wasn’t just about the money. It says a lot about you as a person, Mike. I know I can speak for all of Red Sox Nation when I say I couldn’t envision another player in the MLB manning the hot corner for the Sox. I am proud to call you the 3rd baseman for my team. Thank you Mikey. You are truly an inspiration to me.

Mike, first of all, congratulations on your new contract. I am so excited that you’re coming back to Boston. Watching you play is something that I enjoy immensely.
Not sure if you’ll actually read this or not, but I want to tell you about the nickname I gave you last year. Seeing as how you have quite the knack for hitting doubles, especially at Fenway, I started referring to you as “Doubles”, which was then shortened to “Dubs”… I get all kinds of funny looks from people at the games, I get to about 8 or 10 a year, when I’m standing there saying “Come on Dubs”….
Anyway, welcome back. And best of luck to all of you in defending your World Series title next year. Thanks Mike!!

Hey Curt….thanks for taking the time to keep this blog updated during the off-season…you rock….can’t wait for ‘08 to start….and thank YOU to Mikey Lowell for coming back to Red Sox Nation….I think in the last two yrs, you’ve seen the power of what the fanbase here in Boston and all across the Nation can do. You are not only beloved for your on field skills, but for your leadership and clubhouse demeanor. That is what’s needed to make the Sox tick and I’m glad we have you for several more years.
It’s gonna be a merry merry merry Frickin’ Christmas. Believe it. Thank you again for coming back to where you’re most wanted. Best fielding third baseman I have ever seen.

Mike,
My 86 year old father has become feeble, and began living with us this past summer. Having grown up in Cambridge, and Somerville, he’s been a die-hard Red Sox fan for his entire life. He has always wanted to share his love of the Sox. When I was a child he’d send me to stay at my grandmothers house in Somerville during a July homestand so that I could go to the games and sit in the bleachers with the neighborhood kids, just the way he did as a child. What an adventure for a country kid from New Hampshire to make that bus and trolley excursion to Fenway.
My father’s devotion to the Red Sox has never waivered, he even turned down a job offer from Bill Veeck to work in the Indians Organization after WWII. Bill was serving under my father in the Marines when he suffered the injury that eventually cost him his leg. My father said that he turned down the offer because he couldn’t be faithful to the Indians, his buddy Bill, and still be a Red Sox fan. For a poor sports loving kid from Somerville, that couldn’t have been an easy choice.
Suffice to say that he listens to every single game on the radio (we don’t have cable or satellite for our kids sake). The occasional nationally televised game was a real treat for him.
I’ve now been fortunate enough to share the thrill of watching every minute of two Red Sox World Series Championships with my father. The first one was cathartic, relieving years of frustration and pain. My father was always waiting for the Sox to invent a new way to blow it. This time it was different. He believed that this team had all the necessary ingredients to succeed. Plus they had Mike Lowell, who in his estimation was not a throw in, but a bonus.
When I came home from work Monday and told him that I heard that you’d resigned with the Sox for three years and short money, he shakily rose to his feet and gave you a standing ovation as though you were in the room with us.
If my father hadn’t been so loyal to the Red Sox, I might have grown up a fan of the Indians, the Browns (Orioles), or the White Sox (Veeck’s subsequent teams). If he’d gone for the money, and the “opportunity” that Bill Veeck offered, I would have likely missed the summer pilgrimages to Fenway, and ultimately would have missed my occasionally tantalizing, and frequently frustrating membership in Red Sox Nation.
Just like my Dad did all those years ago Mike, when tempted, you chose the greater good. This is your legacy now. You will forever lionized as a hero of this era of Red Sox Nation.
Congratulations Mike Lowell. Congratulations Red Sox Nation.
November 21st, 2007 at 2:55 pm
Curt, very cool idea!
I’ve been a Sox fan my whole life, growing up in Vermont and then stayed with the Sox even after I moved to Ohio back in the early 90’s (Columbus as a matter of fact- Lowell, I believe may have spent some time here coming up through the Yanks org; and my dad and I got to see your last AAA outing, Curt, this year. Very cool!)
But anyway, as my dad and I were trying to pick out an MVP for the series we both agreed that it should be Mike Lowell! So we are both very happy to see him return to Boston. Thank you Mike for coming back to Boston!
(and you too Curt!)
I feel very good about the state of the Red Sox right now! Very good!!!

Thanks Mike!!
I was pumped when the Sox got you and I’m even more pumped to have you at 3rd for another 3 years!!
Don’t ever forget that “they” said that your bat slowed down!
I would like to believe that is the BS that drives you to pound the Green Monster all season long…
Hold that MVP hardware high Mike.

Hell, Mike, you’re the glue on this team. A true “dirt dog”, you’re not afraid to get down and dirty on some of those plays, and RSN appreciates it. Thanks!

Mike-
Great to have you back! You are such an important piece of our team and next year would never have been the same without you. It’s always nice to see that not all baseball players care only about the money; for that you are not only a great player but also a gentleman. Here’s to another exciting and successful year next year… but first, enjoy your offseason you sure do deserve it.

Honestly i am a yankee fan lol…but i admire the way you play mr.schilling (i do not hate the red sox) but i do wish mr.lowell would have decided to come to ny and play 1st but what mr.lowell and yourself have done is overlooked nowadays. You Both took contracts at a “hometown discount”, but is it really a discount? Every major leaguer gets to be a “kid” and play the game they love
November 21st, 2007 at 3:14 pm
Mr. Lowell - It’s crazy, I know, that we all feel like we know you. But that’s just how it is in Red Sox Nation. I wanted you to come back so badly. We are always told it’s a “business” but that’s hard for the regular fan to understand. The amount of money you all can make is hard for us to fathom. I truly understand that you could have had a bigger payday elsewhere but made your decision with your heart! And the money is not too shabby either!
Thank you….Thank you….Thank you….you will not regret it, Red Sox Nation won’t let you! Looking forward to 3 more glorious years with the best third baseman we could ever hope for!

By mid May of this year, following a tough loss everyone in my family would inevitably say “Yeah, but where would be with Mike Lowell?” The true 5 hitter. The classiest guy on the team. Making every play at third and doing it under the biggest spotlight possible. David Ortiz has always been my favorite Red Sox but you’re the guy every young ball player should look up to.
Eternal gratitude,

Mike -
So excited to have you back next year!
I had vowed to head to the Tobin Bridge if you had signed with the Yanks. Thankfully, that trip has been cancelled.
Have a great offseason and looking forward to ‘08!

November 21st, 2007 at 3:26 pm
Hell of a season! Thanks for staying with us, man! I would have booed you at Fenway if you signed with the Yanks, but I would have felt very conflicted about it.

Mike,
There were times this summer when it was very difficult for me to get out of bed. Both of my boys suffer from bi-polar disorder, and the care they require can sometimes lead to bouts of depression, especially for caregivers.
But I got up, because I knew the Sox would be playing that day.
That made everything ok.
Baseball is just a game blah blah blah…..but this year…this year it was special for me. It was my lifeline.
Thanks to You, Curt, and the whole club.
You made every day a better day for me. Thanks for resigning. Next year things will be better for me. Let’s hope they’re even better for you!
God Bless….Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Best,
Dean Sparks

Wow, I just had to add that I thought I was the only one crushing on Mr. Lowell. Guess not
I didn’t want to say it but since some other people did…
If some crazy alternate universe existed in which I got to choose between George Clooney and Mike (no disrespect intended to the lovely Mrs. Lowell), I would choose Mike and that’s the absolute truth. That’s all, I don’t want him to be so scared that he changes his mind about staying here.

Yo Mikey,
Thanks for sticking around bro. You are the man. We all love you, that’s obvious. You are a class act, the WS MVP and the best 3b in the game. SO enjoy the offseason and get some rest…because we want to win it again.

i am still waging my singlehanded campaign of “doesnt mike lowell look like sean connery” to very little effect… but beyond that … this is like the “wow they got Foulke too” feeling from a few years back… “wow Mike will be here for 3 more years….” incredible all around effort redsox of 07, but we are so happy Mike is back.
November 21st, 2007 at 3:37 pm
Curt this was an awesome Idea not only congratulations to Mike but to you too Curt. I am so excited for the start of next season and it’s only Thanksgiving. The whole Red Sox team was awesome last season and it’s good to see all most of of yo back again!
But to Mike you are a wonderful player and we would not have gotten to the world series if it weren’t for you (i guess you may have a little help from the rest of the team). I wish my mother would have been able to see you on our team and play. She passed in 2005 at 51 years old of gallbladder cancer and I know that you and John Lester would have been a great inspiration to her if she had made it through. Anyway…
And I mean come on if you weren’t going to play for Boston who was??? It is a very SCARY thought:)
Good luck in 2008 guys

Mike, A long time ago, we had the Babe. Then we had Teddy Ballgame. This team has some wonderful guys but you are absolutely the man I would like to have in my fox hole if I ever went to war.
What a class guy! All is right with the world when the Evil Empire gets A-Rod around it’s neck for the next ten years, and the Red Sox and Boston have you instead. This is Thanksgiving, Christmas and the 4th of July all at once - thanks for everything, Mike. Hope you realize how much you mean to all of us long time Sox fans.

Curt,
Thank you for this. As I am sure you expected, the response is incredible!! Inspirational men like you and Mikey make us proud to be loyal members of Red Sox nation! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Mikey,
I have been an avid Red Sox fan for forty years and have admired you from the moment you chose to wear number 25. I have totally enjoyed every minute of watching you play. Absolutely thrilled you re-signed! Thank you for being the outstanding ballplayer and man that you are. As you can see, you have had an enormous impact on RSN. Congratulations and thanks for making a great decision that you will never regret.
Hope you are able to attend the baseball writers’ dinner in January. We will make it worth your while to come up here in the cold and receive your well-deserved MVP!!!
Wishing you continued success and happiness in Boston! Just cannot wait to see you receive your Boston Red Sox World Series ring!
Enjoy the holidays with your family.

I love Mike Lowell all the way from NYC. Grew up in Weymouth and moved to NYC at 21 - here 40 years and still love my Red Sox. Curt - thanks for thinking up this great idea and thanks for representing yourself and joining the Sox for another year.
Every day since Game 4 of WS I’ve checked the Boston Globe to see if Mike had signed. I’ll tell you I do not ever remember so much support for a player from his teammates. Veritek holding the sign in the parade, Mannie telling everyone “forget ARod we’ve got Lowell”, Curt speaking up for Mike (well Curt speaking up is not new) and David Ortiz on Conan O’Brian telling Theo to sign Lowell as he walked off the stage. Did not see that kind of backing for Johnny Damon. You must be great in the Clubhouse. I know you are great on the field.
Thanks for taking less money and one less year - glad ARod went back to Yankees - otherwise I was afraid you would be their third baseman! So so happy you signed with Sox - what a great, exciting team. Ann Killory

Just wanted say how happy the Rhode Island chapter of RSN is about both Curt and Mike Lowell being back.
Both of you are true professionals and lead by example. I look forward to
seeing you hoist another World Series trophy next season; hopefully at Fenway.
Thanks again,

Not bad for a ‘thrown in’, the next person to use that phrase in connection with Mike Lowell should get knee capped (unless its a joke).
Mike you are what every young player should aspire to be both on and off the field. I hate to ever pin any athlete with the term role model but thats just what I’ve seen you as in your time in Boston. It’s been a joy to watch you play and I hope that we get to see you finish your career here in Boston.
also, is it me or have you been owning the curve ball all season ?
Please keep up the good work!

My mother in law is a 74 year old die hard Red Sox fan. We were over their house for one of the World Series games, and she said to me, “If they don’t re sign Mike Lowell, I’ll never watch the Sox again!!” I think she meant it.
I believe that letting you go would have been one of the worst decisions this franchise would have ever made. I love watching you hit, but to me what makes you such an important player is your defense. I can’t count how many close bang bang plays that you and Kevin Youkilis put together this year. You save the pitching staff a lot of work with those plays, and it is great that you will be making them for the next three years. Thanks for staying.

You are an amazing player and seem to be an amazing person as well!!!! Welcome back!!!!!!Thanks for staying with us crazy boston fans!!!

Mr. Lowell,
You now know you can never buy a drink in Boston? Really, you’ve done a great thing, considering all of the greed that shows up in professional sports today. We understand you do not play for free, but we also understand that you are more than set for life, and your kids are more than set for life. Good on you. As a fan, I’m glad you’re back. The Red Sox are a better team because you are there.
I think the most important thing is this: When my children and I watch a baseball game, there’s pride in me saying to them, “I hope you grow up to be like Mike Lowell”.
Now lets win another WS…….

I spent the entire 07 season trying to soften the blow for my girlfriend (who likes you a little bit too much for me to be comfortable with), trying to explain to her that in baseball today there is no room for sentimentality, that you had earned the right to go elsewhere and make a whole lot more, that you had a payday coming and what was best for the team was not going to be what’s best for you. A whole year I spent trying to get her used to the idea and then the other day she strolls in proud as can be and says “I told you so, Mikey’s not like other guys.” I couldn’t be happier. Thanks for, like papi and curt and some others, leaving money on the table in order to be part of this fantastic collection of businessmen, ballplayers, and fans. And thanks for helping us get the taste of “I’m Johnny (expletive) Damon” out of our mouths.
November 21st, 2007 at 4:30 pm
Mike and Curt, you are both men of integrity. It was so refreshing to be able to tell my kids that you chose the team you love over cash you don’t need. Sadly there is a dearth of good sports role models. Unless you live in New England.
There is something so special about the last 4 years of Red Sox teams. The camaraderie and genuine family-feeling that seems to exist in the clubhouse, to me, is a huge part of our recent World Series wins. You can’t buy that. It exists among people who are nice, fun, kind, crazy and caring gentlemen. I think the reason we win is the true team atmosphere you, Curt and the rest of the gang embody when you turn down astonishing amounts of money to stay here.
Us fans are tough on you guys, but when you kick ass on the field and then do stuff like this, you earn our undying loyalty. You are both fine examples of true sportsmen.
Thank you.

Wow, you’re going to print ALL of our postings? hahaha, it’s going to take a lot of paper…
Anyway - Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! Hope you get to enjoy a quiet day of relaxing and spending good time with those close to you.
Hmm. What do I want to say to Mike Lowell….?
“Thrilled to have you back. It’s easy to pick you as a “favorite” or “must have” on the team. It’s guys like you, and Curt Schilling, Jason Varitek (be still my beating heart!), and Kevin Youkilis that show such tremendous heart while playing. That goes over and above - well beyond just talent. There’s talented players, and then there’s talented players with passion. I for one, am excited for this coming season - and proud of the kinds of players that seem to gravitate towards Boston teams, you being one of them.
Thank you for making the decision to stay. I think everyone feels like they can breathe a little easier now! Have a fantastic off season and Happy Holidays!”
November 21st, 2007 at 4:38 pm
Dear Mr. Lowell,
Although I am true blue Yankees til I die, and would rather eat dog waste than see something good for the RedSox, I am not ashamed to admit that I have tremendous respect for you and the way you conduct yourself. Unlike other Boston players who I will refrain from naming, you look and act like a gentleman. I appreciate the comments you made about the Yanks, and your respect for their organization. I was hoping we could have had you and Alex both in our lineup next season but I respect your loyalty to the Red Sox. If I say I hope you arent WS MVP next year, don’t take it personally, I just hope it’s a Yankee
Best wishes to you and Im glad to see your fans appreciate you… Somebody has to bring some class to that team, and you do that each day.
Take care, sir Have a great holiday season.

Once this region embraces you, I struggle how some choose to leave for the do-re-me ($)…New England has a loyal fan base unless you try to pull the wool over our eyes…it can’t be done…we can sniff out a ruse…we now have a virtual sports empire…The Sox, Pat’s & Celtics have bought into the team concept…there is no “I” in team…it makes it so much better to watch…I happened to be at the Celtics/Nuggets game a few weeks ago…I watched how our players conducted business, and then I watched Martin & Anthony walk around doing the “gangsta” thing…that dog don’t hunt in NE…we have (3) world class organizations (Bruins are trying) and I am so proud when I travel the country and get into sports conversations…we (Sox,Pat’s & Celt’s) appear to be leading by example…you hope the rest of the country follows…show the kids the correct way…right ?…to play at your level, which is hard to fathom, is a gift…you all respect your games and it shows…you all are special guys and we love you man…Thanks for staying Mikey…you belong here !!!!
November 21st, 2007 at 4:59 pm
Mike,
As a long time Sox fan I have never criticized a player for taking more money to play some place else. I’ve been disappointed that players have left but that is totally different.
What I commend you for is not so much for taking less money, but for knowing what is important to you and standing up for that and not giving in to what I can only imagine must be some pressure from either an agent or players union to take the largest offer.
One only has to look at A-Rod to see that it’s not always in a players best interest to take the largest contract. No way could he have WANTED to play in Texas.
I have no idea but I’m guessing it’s a part of the reason Curt doesn’t have an agent. You are a player that not only has produced but by the type of person you are it’s very easy to route for.
Congrats on the contract and good luck in the coming years.
November 21st, 2007 at 5:04 pm
Curt - Fantastic idea. Thanks so much for everything that you’ve done for this team, and for the fans of Red Sox Nation (both on and off the field) Though your tenure with the Sox has been relatively short, you will go down as one of the all-time greats. Thanks.
Mike - I hope by now you understand how much having you back means to Red Sox Nation. You were a huge part of this team’s success, and more importantly, you gave the fans a great role model to cheer for. You contributions to this team have already been huge, and we all look forward to three more years of having you at the hot corner. Best of luck in 2008!
We’ll be there for you during the good, and we’ll be there for you during the bad. Red Sox Nation sticks together, and you are certainly part of it. Thanks so much, Mike!

First off thank you Schilling for doing this. And I am happy you are coming back too.
And thank you Mike Lowell for choosing the Red Sox as your home for the next 3 years. I am more happy that you didnt end up with the Yankees. I don’t know what us Red Sox fans would of done if we lost another player to the Yankees. But have a good offseason and see you at Spring Training!

Mike,
Thank you so much for staying in Boston when we all know you could’ve gotten a more lucrative deal elsewhere. It means a lot to root for a ballplayer who would do something like that in these days of free agency, and it says a lot about you. Can’t wait for three more years of #25 at third.

Dear Mike:
You “made” my offseason! First, I was thrilled that Schill was coming back but was biting my nails over your return. I checked Boston.com and practically every sports site every morning to see if there was any news about you resigning with the Sox. To say I was thrilled when I read that you had agreed to return is a vast understatement!
You are the true epitome of class, someone who appreciates what he has and is humble about it. I’m glad my teenage sons will see that you (and Curt) held your family, teammates, fans and heart above the almighty dollar. It is a privilege to watch you and best of all, have you as a member of my beloved Sawx. (By the way, you are my favorite player since Dewey Evans!!!).
Best wishes for a wonderful Thanksgiving.

From a fan that is halfway around the world, I’d like to thank you for being so awesome. And for having the best fielding percentage for a third baseman.
I couldn’t imagine watching Cookie Off 3 without you there. Just to think of all the uneaten cookies that are left without your judgment is unbearable.
(haha)
In all seriousness, welcome back to the Red Sox, although you were only gone for a while. Thank you for making my holidays enjoyable.

First of all, thank you Curt for doing this, and allowing all of Mikey’s fans to send him a message. Mikey, you have been such an inspiration in my life, as I’m sure you have to a lot of other people as well. I want to thank you for all the joy and happiness you bring to me and all of your other fans. You are definitely by far the classiest man in the game. Congratulations on your MVP trophy, you certainly deserved it. Made me cry when you got up on that stage to get your trophy. I was so happy for you. Also congratulations on being the MVP of the Red Sox for the year. You have worked so hard to prove yourself, and a job well done at that. My only other favorite player was Carlton Fisk. I always told myself, that never again would I allow a player to get inside my heart. But you broke down the walls and did it, and I’m so happy that you did. You are like no other player in the game, a true pro, both on and off the field. You are a real person, no ego, no hype. You just do your job quietly and very efficiently. Thank you for coming back to Boston. We all love you so much. Not a hard thing to do, with the kind of man that you are. I’m so glad that I get to watch you play for 3 more years, although, I would have watched you no matter where you ended up, but I’m glad it’s on my hometown team. That way we still get to see the wonderful interviews you do, and read all the articles written about you. That would have been the hardest part if you didn’t come back. Have a terrific, healthy and productive 3 years here, and maybe you’ll get another year after that. Here’s hoping! I would like to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving, a very Merry Christmas, as you’ve already made mine as well as many others a merry one already, and a very Happy New Year! Oh, as well as a very happy birthday, with many many more happy and healthy ones! I hope you go to the sportswriters dinner, as I am having something special made for you, and would love to give it to you there. I know that you are such a humble man, but Mikey I hope you now realize how loved you are here in Boston, and how much we fans respect the job you do both on and off the field. You are one in a million! MIKEY LOWELL, you are…….Simply The BEST!!!!!!

We are sooo glad that you stayed with the Sox! The other Sox fans at work with me were giddy with delight and we got to watch the yankee fan elicit a huge groan!

Congratulations and on to more World Series titles and MVP’s for you.

A year ago around this time of year I asked my father who was then 57 a hypothetical question. I asked, if I were to buy him a sox jersey whose name would be on it. His instant answer was Lowell, followed up by schill.
Lowell, you are one of the players who although you are not yet “old” you are one of the older players on the team, you lay low, provoke no scandals or news, you are just one of those guys who can still “do it” I guess thats what appeals to my father, he most identifies with you. I guess as he is an older active guy, riding bikes in the summer, walking several miles each day, he values hard work, doing what is needed, and triumphing obstacles that get more and more difficult as one ages.
Not to leave you out Schill, but you also embody some of thses traits. There are three generations in sox nation. There is my fathers generation, those who never thought they would see a world series won. And there is my generation of twenty somethings who hoped and bled red sox, and now with two wins under the belt, still need more to make up for the frustration. Lastly there is the teens and below, who only know winning.
We need guys like you (schill, timlin, wake, lowell), for the older and middle generation to directly assocate and identify with. If you can still “do it” so can we. For the younger generation, you also provide the more laid back role model, sure paps can dance, but you do it with class. You bring the work hard attitude and the celebrate responsibily attitude to the table.
Sure a team of only young guys could win the series, but that lacks something. As long as you guys hang in here, the sox will be winners. You help the young talent mature, you mentor, we need you.
As for the jersey, my father never got one. Last winters offseason was slow, there was no championship, My sister and I decided to go more utilitarian, and we got him a really nice Columbia Jacket, one to replace all the old and ugly, green 70’s winter jackets he could never part with.
Thank you Lowell for coming back, now I can get him a jersey bearing your name this holiday season. I will guarantee you that he will wear it with pride.
Thanks for allowing me to share,
Justin Kapust

It says alot about a guy when he leaves gaurenteed money and years on the table to come back to a team that he knows can be successful. This day in age in baseball, its assuring to see that values and winning can be at the forefront of someones mind. Thanks Mike, can’t wait to win the world series next Year.

Hey Mike
Thanks for taking less to come back here, both you and Curt should never have to buy dinner, or a drink anywhere in New England again.
It’s fantastic to have great people like you both here. In a day and age where loyalty is a lost virtue, and management sure didn’t show you guys any, and top dollar is all that matters, that you both came back here.
I just can’t say how happy the whole family here is to have both of you.

Classy move. We are all very happy you are coming back. It is remarkable how quickly you beacame a fan favorite. Your rock steady D, clutch hitting, and no-nonsense-quiet professionalism won the cranky fan base over well before you earned the world series MVP. Now with that honor you have made certain that your name will also go down in Sox history with that guy that had the bloody sock incident….what was his name again?

Mike,
My son, husband and I were so happy to hear that you resigned with the Red Sox..what a wonderful early Christmas present to Red Sox Nation!!! My 12 year old son would come from school each day and ask if the Red Sox signed you yet and would become frustrated when I told him no not yet, but keep believing. Thank you for everything you’ve done for the team! My family and I are so relieved that you’re staying in Boston! I’ve enjoyed every moment of watching you play for the Sox, and I’m so happy I’ll be able to cheer you on for another three years! You’re one of the hardest working players on the team, and you deserve every bit of glory that you’ve earned. You’ve been my favorite since you first came to Boston last year. I even have your jersey hanging on the wall over my bed! I’m so happy that you’re finally getting the attention you deserve! Boston will always love you! Enjoy the off season! Looking forward to seeing you again next spring!

Thanks, Mike. As a Sox fan for over forty years, I told many friends: “If A-Rod plays third for “us” I might not be able to watch anymore.” And if they (FO) let Lowell leave I will be very upset.”
So, the big news is that, in part because of you, I TOO WILL BE BACK NEXT YEAR~!
November 21st, 2007 at 6:25 pm
Good idea Curt. :o) And thanks for the opportunity to thank my favorite 3rd baseman.

Thank you for gracing us with your awesomeness at 3rd base, Mike. Now I can sleep at night. I haven’t had a weird Sox/Lowell-related dream since I heard you were re-signing. They’d been keeping me awake at night and it was starting to get annoying.
And since nothing makes my dad happier than sharing the Red Sox with his little girl, I’m looking forward to a lengthy conversation about you (and the rest of the team) on Thanksgiving.
So a million times over, thank you. You’ve got no idea how much the Nation admires you.

Thank you Curt and Mike for staying in Boston. You guys and the rest of the Red Sox are a class organization which RedSox Nation is VERY PROUD of. As a life long Sox fan I never imagined what life would be like as the fan of the Champs but now my daughter lives in a world in which our beloved Sox are two time champions.
Again thank you to both of you and to all of the Red Sox organization.
November 21st, 2007 at 6:39 pm
Mike,
I have followed your success since you came to the Red Sox. This past season you were phenomenal. I kept saying to my family, I don’t see how the Red Sox can let him go. I kept my fingers crossed while you were going through free agency and to my delight you signed for 3 more years. Who needs A-Rod when we have YOU! Thank you, thank you, thank you.
November 21st, 2007 at 6:40 pm
Congratulations on your new contract Mike and welcome back! You’ve only been in a Red Sox uniform for two years and I think you are the classiest and most professional baseball player I have ever seen. You play the game the way it was meant to be played and you’re a leader on and off the field. That speaks so much more than your batting average, or RBI totals, or fielding percentage. You’re a great athlete but you’re an even better human being. Goodluck in 2008 and beyond.

Hi, Mike - My son started paying attention to baseball this summer - the Sox, of course. So we started watching all the games together, and you quickly became his favorite player - and mine. We finally got to Fenway for the first time on his 7th birthday, which was the last game of the regular season. It was a fun, ‘meaningless’ game. But not meaningless for us, of course. It was great when Tito took you off the field so all the fans could applaud you for your great season.
Little did we know that the best was yet to come! Not just the victories and the championship, but your MVP award, and now - further confirmation that our favorite player is also one of the classiest guys in the world of sports. Congratulations on your wonderful year, and we’re thrilled that we’ll get to watch you in a Red Sox uniform for a long time to come.
And thanks to Curt as well for hosting this forum and posting all of the great insights about baseball, the team, and the world in general as he sees it.
Regards,
Susan (and Marcus) Bueti

Curt,
Thanks for the chance to say this. Glad you’re coming back for one more year.
Mike,
Bill Mueller was one of my favorite Red Sox players. When you came in, I felt like you were going to have some pretty big shoes to fill. It has been a seemless transition (from a fan’s point of view). You strike me as the same type of player who quietly goes about his business and leads by example. I’m glad we’re getting our World Series MVP back. Thanks for re-signing!! Looking forward to seeing you in a Sox jersey for the next 3 years.
November 21st, 2007 at 6:59 pm
Growing up we watched the Sox with the grudging knowledge that if our favorite player was to win a championship he would have to leave to do so. Mike, you and Curt represent the exact opposite of that. You STAYED to win a championship. You represent a true change in the very fabric of Sox Nation. We are truly blessed as fans to have two of the most esteemed players in MLB choose to stay and vie for a World Series on our beloved Sox’ behalf.
November 21st, 2007 at 7:01 pm
Thanks Mike,
I took my son, who was 10 at the time, to the game against the Baltimore Orioles last year in which you made a diving catch of a popped up foul bunt to open the game - a fantastic catch. He immediately joined me as a Mike Lowell fan, and would have truly been heart broken had you left just for more money. You demonstrate every game why you are one of the best pure all around baseball players Boston Red Sox fans have had the pleasure of watching. It is the little things that are not in the box score or highlight reels that I appreciate and love to watch the most.
While you may have left millions of dollars behind, you have kept something that may be far more valuable — loving fans who truly appreciate all that you do. It is refreshing in these times of chasing every dollar, that a star like you would choose to return because they love to play for their team, with their teammates, in a city that is passionate in their support.
R. from NH
P.S. Curt - 2 titles in 4 years are directly attributable to you presence. Like Mike, your passion, abilities, and commitment will ensure that you will forever be a hero in Boston (and the rest of the Red Sox Nation). Signing a contract for less than you may have received elsewhere simply ensures that you will never have to pay for a beer in a Boston bar
Of course, thanks to you as well.

Mikey!
Great early Thankgiving present to the Nation! LOVE YOU and your contribution to the team! Mr. Double is back!
So thrilled to read your quote, “I just didn’t think my happiness should just be bought by dollars.” Amen, buddy! Too bad more players don’t understand that.
As a proud Nation citizen from Arizona, just wanted to let you know how thrilled we are to watch you for 3 more years! We were sweatin’ the thought of the Yankees getting you back!
A toast to you!
And blessings to you and yours.

Mike and Curt –
In these days of free agency, it is so rare to see a team look the same from year to year. I am thrilled that the 2008 Red Sox will look an awful lot like the 2007 Red Sox, mostly because you both were able to set aside egos and look at the value of things other than money. It is hard for most of us to comprehend the difference between 12 million and 14 million dollars, as they are amounts most of us will never see. I am sure your families will be well cared for at either level. I can certainly understand the desire for a longer contract, as we all like some job security, especially when it is something we love to do. I do hope the area, the fans, the organization, and the 2008 season all live up to your hopes after your commitments to being here. Thank you so much for giving us another season to look forward to, and for being such great players to watch.
Fan since ’64 –

Hey Mikey…..The previous 265 bloggers stole what I was going to say……
So…..
Thanks for keeping your word and finally doing what Mo Vaughn said on WEEI years ago….” Dale, It’s not about the money”….
plus….It will be more fun to get your ring on Opening Day at Fenway next year rather than in the mail….
Thanks again…Happy Holidays

Dear Mike,
It was wonderful to hear that you had agreed to return to play for our Boston Red Sox. I am old enough to remember the 25 men - 25 taxis team and the aura that playing in Boston had. It seems that has changed, and it seems your teammates really appreciate what you bring to the game and to the clubhouse. That was pretty awesome to see during the parade. Whether the front office listened to that or not is not the point. The point is that you were wanted back and that you wanted to be back.
Honestly, I was selfish in that I wanted to see you back and was tickled to hear you had re-signed. At the same time, I want you to know that most fans appreciate what you have contributed and would have wished you well no matter where you would have signed. (Even, may I dare say, the NYY.) You have carried yourself with grace and dignity. You are a class act and it is an honor to have you wear the uniform that so many of us have loved for so long (me? I’ve been a fan since I was 4 years old in the fall of 1963. You were a finance major, right? You do that math. ; ) ) When you first came to Boston, many considered you a throw in with Josh Beckett. You quickly sent that concept flying and showed us that you are a GG caliber 3rd baseman. Your worth ethic, your leadership, your struggling through slumps and shining…. I will make it to Fenway Park, Camden Yards, Yankee Stadium and, perhaps, Rogers Centre in 2008. May G-d keep you healthy and happy… and I hope to see you play!
G-d Bless you and your family. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and a productive yet restful off-season.

Thanks Mike, and thank you Curt for this opportunity, as well as your candor in all your posts.
While you both of you have said or at least implied that no one can complain about the salaries for which you’ve both “settled”, we all know that you came from the same humble beginnings as most of us in Red Sox Nation, and it’s hard for anyone to leave money “on the table” at any level, for a principle.
If you think your reception at the parade was warm, wait ‘til April.

I for one am pretty sick of people following the almighty dollar rather than being loyal to a team or a fanbase.
Thank you for giving me hope that athletes really are not greedy bastards who have it so well when most people like me would kill to play ONE MLB game…. for free.
How much is enough for Godsakes when athletes usually make more in one season than 90% of their fan base does in a lifetime.
Thank you Mike Lowell for making sense.

In a day where players go where the money is, a stand up guy like Mike Lowell goes where he is respected, loved, and admired by a nation of strong supporting fans. It’s a rare sight to see indeed. Thank you Mike. Thank you for being an integral part of this team. Thank you for being a leader. Thank you for being a strong human being. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas. It takes a big man to do what you’ve done. You’ve stood up. And even though I live thousands of miles away from Boston, I cannot wait to see you back out on the diamond come April. Good luck Mike. Stay safe.
Thanks to Curt as well

Thank You So Very Much Mr. Lowell For Staying With Us.
I wanted to see as much of the same team next year as possible. You and Mr. Shilling staying was a Key part. Now we can see the same team and Pitching Coach also, Ya! go for it all again. My poor wife.
I can’t leave out Mr. Francona, all the Coaches, Scouts, Mr. Epstein and Management, Mr. Henry and Owners.
Happy Holidays Mike L. & A healthy 2008 to All !!!

I’d like to leave a couple of “Thank You’s”:
Thank you Curt Schilling. Thank you for being a part of the most fun, passionate, and *real* teams in Major League Baseball - For your love for the game, your drive, your kind pen and your big heart. I’ve been watching you since you came to the Sox, and your contribution is truly inspiring. Sometimes I wonder if you belong to Boston or if Boston belongs to you, but both scenarios are good for the other. Thanks for staying here in Boston.
Thank you Mike Lowell. Thank you for your professionalism, your candor, and for signing on with the Sox. I was a bit worried there for a while, and actually lost sleep waiting for your decision. Seriously. You fit in with the way the team plays, you are *excellent* at what you do, and you have truly carved a slot for yourself within the “personality balance” of the Red Sox - which is just one of the reasons that the Red Sox is the most popular team in the majors. Congratulations on getting MVP for the World Series. You deserved it, and you are a class act.

Wow!!! Has anyone just sat and thought about what Mike Lowell has done. In a world where everthing seems “me first” and “the one with the most toys wins” is the dominate force, someone like Mike Lowell arrives on the scene and renews faith in mankind. This man turned down over 10 million dollars to return to a team and a city that he’s only known for two years. I love the City of Boston, and now I see just how fast it grows on people. I know I’m not alone and saying that the Red Sox have the better man. It’s been said, that professional athletes are lucky because they get to play a game and get paid. But this week, Red Sox Nation is the lucky one, for we have a third baseman that we look up to, respect, and appreciate. And whatever the next three years have in store for Mike Lowell on the field. Let none of us forget, that he chose us. Never let him forget that we appreciate it. Never let him forget that we love what he does on the field, but we admire what he is.., a husband, a father, a son.., and most of all a man!!!
November 21st, 2007 at 7:26 pm
Thanks, Mike!
One of my favorite moments of the 2007 season was seeing you on TV hopping around Fenway high-fiving the fans after you guys clinched the AL East. It’s great to have you back! You’re obviously a major part of an extremely well constructed team.
November 21st, 2007 at 7:30 pm
Thank you so much Mike for coming back to the Sox for the next three. I’m so grateful u didn’t pull a Johnny Damon and go to NY. You play the est third base in the world and u hit balls off the green monster like its Arods face!!! I believe that they should have given you a four year deal, I believe youve earned that respect. The Redsox research on aging players is not true with everyone (take Wake17 wins, Schill still a great postseason pitcher, and Vtek a rock behinnd the plate).

Thanks Mike…..
Throw in… my back side. I am a fan of RSN I was born in RI and had season tix with my dad to the Paw Sox for many years. That was years ago, but here I am in S Florida and had the chance to see you more than once with the Fish. You were a class act then and continue to be now. I wish the best for you and yours for the holiday season. I can’t wait for spring so we can get to work defending the tile for RSN.
Side note; thanks Curt for the another place for the people to show their love.

Thank you Mike Lowell. You are a true professional, a great baseball player and extremely hot. Thanks also to Curt - you are the man (even though I totally disagree with your politics I still love you)!!
November 21st, 2007 at 7:58 pm
Thank you Curt for letting us use your blog for this purpose.
Mike Lowell,
Thank you for resigning with the Red Sox. I’ve been a fan ever since I was married my ex-husband, who was a die-hard fan, and its one of the things that has stayed with me since the divorce.
It’s been a pleasure watching you and the team in 2007 and watch every chance I get while residing in Florida. I am even getting my significant other, who swore off baseball after the last strike to watch the Red Sox!
I can’t wait for next season!!!

Dear Mike,
As a long time fan of the late and great Tony Conigliaro, I always hated to see someone wear No. 25. But, upon hearing your story, and that you had won the Tony C. award, and getting to see the type of player and man that you are, I felt that you lived up to that honor. I was so sad when you filed for free agency, but watched the news every day, hoping to see that you would remain a Red Sox. And, the thought of using Red Sox and A-Rod in the same sentence certainly turned my stomach. You gave us something else to be thankful for this holiday season when you decided to stay in Boston. It is truly an honor to have such a gentleman on our team, and I look forward to seeing you again in Fort Myers, and Boston. Tony C. would be proud to have you wearing his number! God bless you and your family. The Zeida Family from Cape Cod and North Fort Myers

Mike,
Thanks for making a lifelong Red Sox fan beam with pride not only because his team won another World Series, but because one of the classiest players in the game is going to be with the Sox for at least three more years.
Congratulations on a great season, and thanks for staying with the best team in professional baseball, the Boston Red Sox.
Best Wishes,

Mr. Lowell,
I would like to thank you for being a steady influence and a standard that I wish all Baseball Players could emulate.
You have won my family over and when we went to Safeco to watch the Red Sox’s play it was a dream come true for this man who has cheered for the Sox’s since 1975.
You belong in Boston, You belong at 3rd base, and you will forever be a part of my heart and that of my family.
Thanks for the Thrills, Thanks for your Humility, and Thanks for showing every player in the game, that there is more to this sport than dollars and cents.
Thanks,

Thank you Curt for this opportunity!
We are so excited that Mike will be back for 3 years!! When Mike first came to the Red Sox - we went and bought shirts with his name on it…not because we knew how great he would be…but because we are from Lowell, MA… now we wear them for an entirely different reason - we love you Mike!
November 21st, 2007 at 8:47 pm
Mike:
I think it’s fantastic that you’ll be returning for at least 3 years. May they be your best seasons yet! What you did by resigning with this Red Sox with other offers pending reminds me of ball players of the past, but the 21st Century version. Thank you for a giving us a great 2007 season and post season. You are a class act and I think the entire Red Sox organization has been as well. Enjoy the off-season, you’ve earned it.

Thanks Curt.
Hey Mike,
Thanks for staying in Boston. You are a class act which was personified by the way you dealt with the Phillies. I hope Red Sox Nation realizes how lucky we are to have you on the field and in the clubhouse. Baseball needs more citizens like yourself. Enjoy the off-season, you deserve it.
November 21st, 2007 at 8:53 pm
Dear Mr Lowell, or, as I have affectionately called you since you got here,
“Medium Sized Mike”,
You have more than held up your corner, worked the wall, conducted yourself with honor and dignity while you play with skill, grace, panache and aplomb.
Re-signing here when you could have gone elsewhere for more years and money is a win-win-win situation,
We the fans win because we get to keep a player we love to root for.
Your teammates benefit from a great player and friend they have come to learn they can depend on.
And you win, too, because you followed your heart.
Happy Thanksgiving and Thanks for the Memories - Emily

Thank you Curt for providing this forum to the fans. This is an extraordinary contribution you make to the Red Sox organization. In my opinion, the Red Sox should host a blog for fan outreach. Does any other MLB team do something like that?
Thank you Mike Lowell! The Red Sox are lucky to have found you. And Red Sox fans really appreciate it. Have a wonderful off-season, and prepare yourself for the welcome you’ll receive on opening day!
November 21st, 2007 at 8:57 pm
Mike,
I am not even sure that you will get this far down the list, but in the event that you do I will keep it short and simple. Thank you, and not for your skills with the glove, the RBIs, or the homeruns (although I do appreciate them!). Thank you for proving to all of us that the fans and the city really mean something, and that an athlete’s happiness can and is sometimes more important than the bottom line. You are truly one of the greatest class acts this organization has ever seen. I look forward to watching you over these next few years, and again I thank you so much, partly for the skills you bring to my most cherished team but mostly for the human qualities you exemplify as a member of it. God Bless you and your family.

I too must echo the thanks to Mr. Schilling for not only returning yourself, but for offering a place on your blog to thank another for sticking with us for a few more years.
Mr. Lowell, it has been both a pleasure and honor to watch you since your arrival in Boston, your zeal for the game and willingness to prove that old adage that there’s no “I in team” is nothing short of exemplary in the game today.
I’m sure you’ll get that fourth year before all is said and done, Lord knows you’ve earned it. Hope you and yours, as well as everyone reading this has an enjoyable holiday, as we all await 2008 with baited breath.

Thanks Mikey Lowell for coming back good to see that not every pro player has the A-Rod mentality
November 21st, 2007 at 9:14 pm
While waiting and praying for the FO to reach an agreement with Mike Lowell, a day didn’t go by when I didn’t remind myself that without him, the Red Sox are not 2007 World Champions. A virtual doubles machine, it seemed whenever a clutch hit was needed to win a close game, or a key hit to put a team away, Mike came to the plate and delivered. As the all time leader among 3rd basemen in fielding percentage, his defense was a pitchers best friend. Is it any wonder that The Nation along with his teammates all DEMANDED that Theo bring him back…
Thanks Mike, and welcome home…
November 21st, 2007 at 9:20 pm
Mike,
I can’t tell you how happy I and my family are that you stayed with the Red Sox. It has been so much fun to watch the great year you have had in Boston (Although I have had to put up with my wife who gets excited as she has a thing for you). Anyway, I think what people respond to is that it seems your a person of solid character. That is not something you see a lot in sports today. I look forward to watching you as well as the rest of the Red Sox in 2008. We wish all the best to you and your family.
PS- Curt, thanks for the space to post comments.

Thank you, Mike,
I’ve been a Red Sox fan since 1949, following the team through good years and bad, and for most of those years, I’d have to say that Ted Williams was my all-time favorite position player. That is, until you arrived in Boston. I can think of nobody I’ve come to admire more; not only for your skills on the field and at the plate but what I’ve come to see as a really sterling and admirable quality in your character as a human being, as a man. As a really good man, someone every kid–and adult–can look up to and admire.
Along with everything else that we have to be thankful for, I’m sure that every fan who sits down tomorrow at a Thanksgiving dinner will remember to say a word of “thanks” to you for re-signing with the Red Sox.
And thanks to Curt Schilling–my all-time favorite pitcher–for encouraging these postings.

Mr. Lowell,
I wanted to take the time to thank you for returning to Boston, especially when you could have left whatever team you wanted to look at. I work with alot of Red Sox and all of them have said the same thing after you resigned with Boston. They say that “They have the utmost respect for you for your choice “. So on behalf of my co-works and I thank you and thank you Curt also.

I gotta tell you, I watched the post-game program after you guys took the WS and I ended up in front of my TV, pumping my fist in the air while chanting “RE-SIGN LOWELL! RE-SIGN LOWELL!” with the RSN that stuck around in Denver. Sometime around mid-season last year, I knew you were a keepah, Mike. Thank you for sticking with the Sox. As others have said, you’re a good fit and a big part of this year’s success.
Curt, thanks for setting up this post for everyone to add their thoughts. You understand what makes us Sox fans and that means a lot. Thank you for staying for another year.
Both of you are great role models for my kids. Thank you for everything you’ve done for Boston… and New England as well.

Mr Lowell, sir.
First of all
Thank you for a wonderful two years and a World Series win. I had always hoped to see just one in my lifetime and now I’ve been blessed with two. Words can not describe my gratitude.
Thank you for being such a classy man. It’s wonderful to be able to root for someone like you.
And.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for re-signing with the Sox for three more years (and three more championship possibilities). I was on tenterhooks for the past few weeks, reading everything I could on the talks. So happy when the contract became final. Everyone I know feels like we just got the best Christmas present in the world. An entire month early.
Thank you.

Mike Lowell…
Greetings all the way from Manila!
Big big thanks for signing with the Red Sox for three more years! Everyone is obviously thrilled to see you back in a Red Sox uniform! I could not imagine having another person at third base next season other than you.
Visiting redsox.com (as well as 38pitches) became part of my morning routine especially after you filed for free agency. And I’m relieved when I learned that the deal has finally been sealed. See you at Fenway…hopefully soon!

Hey Curt, I’ve been a huge fan of yours for quite a long time already. This year’s ALCS was played during our finals week in our law school and just when I thought that there’s very little chance of making it through…the team came out fighting and eventually won it all…. Really inspiring! The team inspired me big time…especially you, Curt! And despite the distance, I do my best to support Curtspitch and Shade. I dream of getting to meet you someday (and I do hope you get to read this). My favorite shirt is still the one which reads: “Anyone can win one” Take care!

Hello Mr. Schilling and Thanks for this great idea.
This my first post, but I have allways read your posts. I’m happy as a puertorrican and as a Sox fan that Mr. Lowell is back with the Sox. As you may know Mr. Lowell is considerd puertorrican because his father served in the US armed forces and was in Puerto Rico when his wife gave birth. Thank you Mr Lowell for being a puertorrican and a Red Sox(gracias por ser puertorriqueño y un Medias Rojas). Looking foward to seeing you for next three seasons. Happy Thanksgiving and Holidays.

Mikey…..You are the BEST! I am not surprised that you’re staying in Boston and leaving the other “stuff” behind. The Sox are really blessed to have you on the team. You’re much more than a fabulous third baseman!!! I am looking forward to the next 3 years! Thank You Mike!!!!

Dear Mike,
I was born in 1980 into the madness of Red Sox Nation from day one.
I have always been a fan of yours. I followed you during your time with the Florida Marlins.
When I heard that you were the “throw in” in the Josh Beckett trade I was ecstatic about the thought of seeing you man 3B for the Red Sox. I also felt that Fenway was perfect for your swing.
The 2007 season made me love you even more. Then what you and the Red Sox accomplished in the playoffs was even more special to watch.
You are a class act and by taking the Red Sox contract offer and turning down a larger contract(s) proved that even more.
You are a breath of fresh air. It’s nice to know that there are loyal guys out there still who aren’t just out for all the money they can get.
I can’t wait to watch you for the next 3 seasons in Boston.
Sincerely,
Brett Bloxsom

You have made this offseason great. I’m so stoked that you are going to be holding down third and giving us some pleasure with the bat. You held us together last year when other guys struggled and kicked some butt in the post season. I’m looking forward to that again for the next 3 years.
Now the peices are in place for World Series Champion Red Sox 2008!

Mike,
Thanks for being such a professional. One would be hard pressed to find someone in this day and age of baseball that would turn down extra money to stay with a team. You are a great player and a great leader on this team and we are looking forward to watching you play for the next 3 years. Congrats on your contract and MVP and we hope you bring us another one (or many).

I don’t know a single person who isn’t thrilled to have you back in a Sox uniform. Thank you so much for wanting to stay, even though you definitely could have gotten better money or more years elsewhere. Players like you and Curt, who genuinely enjoy playing in a city despite the money, are rare. Boston loves you, Mike! Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks a lot Mike. It’s wonderful to see someone who not only plays the game the way it should be played and has fun doing it, but has the reputation of being a great clubhouse guy and team player. It appears that management learned the lesson after ‘04 and has stopped over thinking things. I’m sure you are going to have as great a year next year as you did in ‘07 and the Far From Fenway Fan club up here in Alaska looks forward to a repeat in ‘08.
Go Sox!!

I’m thrilled, my kids are thrilled, everyone in my department at school is thrilled–what a classy move. It’s the kind of decision that really means something to me as a parent (and as a teacher) trying to teach values to my kids (and my students). All that stuff aside, as a lifelong Red Sox fan I couldn’t be more pleased. Thanks!!

Mike Lowell,
You are magnificent! And worthy of all the worry about your future over the past 3 weeks. My elderly mother called me everyday, sometimes twice, to ask if there was any news about you. At my work, we were all streaming EEI in our offices everyday waiting to hear, until the server crashed.
We love the way you play and how you came through for the team this year. It was very special, but not as special as you putting baseball and your team ahead of money. You are as impressive a human as you are a ballplayer.
Thank you
November 21st, 2007 at 10:38 pm
GREAT NEWS!
I’m very “thankful” to know that you have decided to return to the Red Sox. You all had a great season. I was lucky to see the sunday night game vs. the Yankees where you guys set a record with 4HR’s in a row. It was electric at Fenway that night.
Playing in Boston in Fenway to sellout crowds is what its all about. You are a great embassidor of the game and the big financial rewards will come later after baseball for you as RedSox nation will not forget you left money on the table to play for the Sox’s.
You are a true throwback to how players are suppose to play the game and treat the fans.
We love you mike.
Good Luck defending the Title in 2008.

Over the past few years I would read about and follow what the players would do in the off season, once they were a free agent, if they ended up leaving the team my response was always the same “WHY???” and said with such shock and my husband reply was always the same “it is all about money, dont get too attached to these guys, these days it is all about the money.” It would kill me and my friends and just be very disappointing. Well, THANK YOU to Mike Lowell and also Curt Schilling for staying because they LOVE IT here. Thanks for staying with us!! Believe me, you have help several of my few friends, who actually were becoming disinterested in the game, come back and get really excited! THANKS AGAIN!!!
November 21st, 2007 at 10:57 pm
Thanks for staying Mike. Your a valuable asset to the team, an awesome third baseman, and a real classy guy. I look forward to the next few years.
Good luck next season, and let’s do it again!

Part of our enjoyment of watching this great Red Sox team this year was for the simple reason that you guys are such a great TEAM. So thank you Mike Lowell for choosing to stay with this great bunch of guys. You truly are the cornerstone (literally being a 3rd baseman) of what we consider to be one of the greatest Boston teams…ever!
So from 3 fans in Montana, thank you!
And thank you too, Curt!

Mike,
I have been a Sox fan my whole life (thanks to my dad) and have raised my kids to be forever a part of RSN. It was hard explaining why Johnny D. left the Sox for the evil empire because of money. OF course baseball is a business and players would be naive not to secure a solid future for their families. When players the caliber of you and Schil put other factors ahead of money like TEAM, friendship, and community it does my heart good. I am proud to share with my children that there are professional athletes out there that play the game the way it should be played and for the right reasons. Thanks Mike! May God bless you and your family.

Glad you are staying in Boston, Mr. Lowell. Players like yourself are the reason why baseball is a great game. I enjoyed watching you play over the past few seasons and I am very happy to see you return for a few more. Good luck next season and I hope you and your family have a great holiday season.

Thank you Lowell!.
On a day my best friend since 1st grade had a heart attack, at age 14, this brought at least a slight smile to my face. It would be great if you could at least give your best wishes to her family that would be amazing. She’s still down at a hospital in Mass. and they just took her off life support, so she should pass, peacefully, soon.
Thank you, seriously, it means almost the world to me.

Thank you Curt for the opportunity to let Mikey know how Red Sox fans feel about him.
For the past couple of weeks, my family and I have been anxiously waiting to hear if Mikey will re-sign with the Red Sox. We are so happy he has decided to come back. It is so nice to see someone who is not all about the money. We have so much respect for you, Mike. Thank you for your loyalty. Looking forward to seeing you in the spring. We love you, Mike!!

Mike,
Again, let’s first get out of the way of how AMAZING you are and how EXCITED the Red Sox Nation is to have you back!!! As a UMass student from the not-so-crazy West Coast, I had to get used to the riots and “enthusiasm” that is Massachusetts, especially about their Red Sox! To this day, I still remember hearing about how Mike Lowell was the man (”wichked-ahhsome”) and it makes me excited that think that new out-of-state freshman coming into my spot 4 years later will continue to watch you play. I am proud to say that I am definitely a part of the Red Sox Nation and will always continue to be, thanks to what dedication Sox players like you show to us fans.
Thanks again oh-great-MVP, and God bless!!!

Mike, I just wanted to say you were great in that movie, World Series MVP: The Mike Lowell Story. Lot’s of action, suspense, some moments where I got a frog in my throat, and that ending. Wow. Just superb. I’ll be on the look out for the sequel.
-F-E-F
p.s. If Schill loses weight, does that mean Meatloaf can’t play him anymore? I love that guy. He can rock like no other.
November 21st, 2007 at 11:26 pm
Mike,
Not knowing what would happen once you were a free agent, I wanted so much for the Sox to win it this year, so you’d earn a ring with Boston. You typified everything I want to see in my team, on the field (where you clearly give everything you have to give) and off (where I’ll never forget seeing you and your wife get a mention in a gossip column… for splitting an ice cream sundae). And in signing again with Boston, knowing you could have signed for more elsewhere, you showed even more clearly why we not only cheer you but WANT to cheer you. Congratulations, thank you, God bless, and bring on 2008!
(And Curt–thanks for doing this, and for coming back yourself! You came to Boston on a mission, and have you ever come through!)
November 21st, 2007 at 11:49 pm
Hey Mike,
Welcome back!
I’m just glad I can go on wearing the “Lowell” t-shirt I bought midway through ‘06.
It would have sucked if I had to throw it out after just 1.5 years… or give in to some crazy fans who would have wanted me to burn it the way Damon’s shirts were burned when he took his act to New York.
Enjoy your time off and we’ll be rooting for you in April!
November 21st, 2007 at 11:52 pm
Mike,
Thanks for coming back. we don’t know you from a hole in the wall, but you seem to be a man of integrity. That is truly important, I think.
November 21st, 2007 at 11:55 pm
Thanks, Mike.
It’s good to see that some players are more concerned with being with the right team than getting the maximum salary, especially since most free agents and their descendants cannot spend all the money he earns.
Boston should have a great shot at the World Series the next three years, and you will be a key to that success.

First, thanks Curt for allowing us to leave our comments here and forwarding them to Mike. This is my first time posting, and I want to thank you for your blog. I also want to thank you for your dedication to the Red Sox. You are also very important to Red Sox Nation! We are very glad that you are returning next year too!
Mike, I first became a Red Sox fan in 1967 while a junior in high school, and have been a dedicated fan ever since. As excited as I am that we won the World Series this year, I have to admit the victory was tainted by the fact that we might not see you back here next year. Thanks so much for making the decision to return, even though you left more lucrative contracts on the table. It’s nice to see players like you and Curt, consider other things besides money. You are both incredible human beings. You give so much to the Red Sox organization, to your teammates, to the younger players, to the community, and to us, the fans. And I agree with one of the other posters, just wait until you see the reception you both will get in the Spring! I know one of things I will be thankful for on Thanksgiving! My family and I wish you both, along with your families, a very blessed Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season.

We’re so glad to see that you are returning to the hot corner for another 3 years. Nothing makes me more excited than knowing you will continue playing for us, knowing that I won’t ever have to learn to cope with the idea that I absolutely dispise our new third baseman (the dreaded rumor of A-Rod.) So thanks for returning!!!
November 22nd, 2007 at 12:15 am
Mike Lowell,
First I would like to congratulate you for an outstanding season. All the hard work truly paid off. I hope you are enjoying an happy Thanksgiving weekend with your loved ones. Some of us are here in Iraq for the second one in a row but hey, that’s what we do! I tell you one thing, the Red Sox season made this Iraq deployment special. Staying up until 2 and 3am waiting on the games to come on was what kept me going day in and day out. I have to thank you all for that.
Now to thanking you. I’ve read reports of you turning done more lucrative offers to stay in Boston. Whether those reports are true or not, I don’t know, but I tell you, one can only asume they are, especially after the great season you had. Thank you for your commitment to the city of Boston, thank you for setting an example to many folks out there. The comraderie that exists in the Red Sox club house can easily be compared to the comraderie that exists among our formations in the Army and that’s something special.
Good luck in 08, and I wish many blessings upon you and your family.

Dear Mike, You are one of those players that exemplifies what The Red Sox have truly been about, years before there was the huge Red Sox Nation there were hard working, talented players that encouraged die hard fans to hang in there and root against all odds. We are blessed here to have the group of players that we have now, and we give thanks for that, but especially to you for the shining example you have just given us that humans can be humble yet noble. I think you should be Knighted, so I shall hence forth call you ” Sir Lowell”.
ps. Thank you Curt for giving us this and for coming back yourself.

Thank you for returning to Boston, to your loyal fans. We love you, and are really happy to see you for the next three years.

Thanks, Mike, for deciding to come back to Boston for the next three years, if only because it gave me the opportunity to see my fortysomething year old aunt squeal like a little girl opening Barbie’s Dream House on Christmas. Seriously, there was a dance. It was awesome.

Mike- I dont know whether I can express how happy I am that you have re-signed with the Sox for 3 more years. Living in Connecticut, I have been glued to ESPN’s Bottom Line…waiting for news. I was horrified by the idea of A-Rod in YOUR spot, and I was one of the crazy fans on parade day yelling “re-sign Lowell” at Theo and Werner and John Henry. So I think my brother Ben put it the best….”A-Rod’s with his Evil Empire, Lowell is home with the Sox, and all is right with the world.” Happy Holidays! -Janna

Mike, on bahalf of the Red Sox fans here in Buffalo, NY, let me just say how pleased u are to be back in the Red Sox uniform. We appreciate all that you have done for the orginization the last 2 years, and all you did last season. Thank you, and thanks Theo, for granting our Thanksgiving wishes, and Curt, same to you. Thank you for all that you have done for the city of Boston, and to Red Sox nation all across the US, ad the world. Let’s begin 2008 strong, and end it with a good note, and bring the WOrld Series back to Boston, the city where it all began, where Babe Ruth first started.

Thanks from a german Red Sox fan who got a thrill of your performance this year and hope that you will surpass that next year!
November 22nd, 2007 at 4:09 am
Mike, you have earned my respect. In a day and age when players take money and years over all else you put those aside for a quality organization. It’s one of the most honorable things I’ve seen done in a very long time.
I like how you just let your game play do the talking and say very little. I very much look foward to seeing you over the next 3 years or more. Have a great holiday season and Congrats on the WS MVP award. It was well deserved.
November 22nd, 2007 at 5:07 am
Mikey,
You are truly a professional and a stand up guy. You are a great leader, the perfect compliment to a guy like Shill or Tek. I want to thank you for not being the money hungry type of person, like most professional players today. The fact that you stayed here for only a three year deal tells all of us what kind of man you really are and how you play baseball from the heart, not with your wallet. Thank you again for staying….We love you Mike!!!
November 22nd, 2007 at 5:44 am
Thanks Curt for thinking of this! Very cool idea!
Thank you Mike for deciding to stay with the Red Sox. I haven’t been a fan for very long, but it didn’t take me long to realize how much you mean to this team and to these fans. We are so glad to have you back! Here’s to many more successful years with the best ball club in major league baseball!

Mikie Lowell - we are delighted that you are coming back to Boston for the next three years.
I love the fact that the Sox players call you Mikie - because I have done so all year [figured it was OK since I'm old enough to be your grandmother!]
Oh, yeah, tell Curt that I’m delighted that he’s returning too!
and THANKS FOR brining another WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSIP to BOSTON
Go Sox!
November 22nd, 2007 at 7:03 am
You Sawx fans need to get real, man. I can appreciate you being happy about Lowell, he’s a solid dude. But all this “oh Thank Goodness we never got A rod” ohhhhhMy Lord!!! you guys are so full of &%?! it isn’t even funny. You guys were desperate for A rod back in 04 and youd lick his cleats now if you had him. So stop lying to yourselves and admit that for all his B.S. he’s the best player in baseball, and that he would make any team better. Your hatred for him should be directed at your teams owner who wouldn’t ante up to keep the trade for him alive when A rod wanted to REDUCE his salary to play in Boston. The Red Sox have an awesome group of players now and will be tough to beat this year for sure. Too bad that their success will be wasted on all their loser fans.

Mike, I have been a Red Sox fan since 1957 and have purchased 2 replica Red Sox shirts during these 50 years, one was for Ted Williams’ and the other was yours.
The reason for this had little to do with hitting, catching, or throwing a baseball. I purchased these shirts because both of you represent professionalism at its best. Ted for his involvement with the Jimmy Fund, and giving up prime years to serve his country in the armed forces, yours because of your determination in battling your personal illness and receiving the 1999 Tony Conigliaro Award.
Your decision to take a professional approach to signing this contract reinforces this opinion, which in the end has much more “true” value. Congratuations.
November 22nd, 2007 at 7:59 am
Mike,
Welcome Home!!! I’m a girl from Lowell who loves to go to Spinners games. I’ve watched Youk, Pap and Ellsbury at LeLacheur Park and that’s exciting…the only thing that excites the crowds at the park more than watching these guys come up through the system is Mike Lowell Bobblehead Night!!!!! I’m sure you know about the tribute to the 3rd baseman and the city that share the same name but I don’t know if you know what a big deal it is. The city of Lowell is so proud of you and thrilled that you are where you belong…in a Red Sox uniform. Thank you for playing your heart out every night so my family and I can have great memories of watching together. You’re a fine example for my kids to emulate! Happy Thanksgiving!
November 22nd, 2007 at 8:05 am
Mike— You have been my absolute favorite player since you joined my beloved Sox last year. Your character, leadership, sound fundamentals and ability to play the corner like a GG 3rd baseman put you into a category of your own. The fact that you overcame testicular cancer, as well, and battled back to become the WS MVP speaks volumes as to the kind of guy you are. Red Sox Nation has wrapped it’s arms around you, Mike, and we are so happy you and your family are returning. Thank you for your loyalty and for not exploiting baseball as so many players do. Baseball is a business and we all know it. However, your decision to play for a team you love, a ball park that suits you as a hitter, and a Nation who respects you as our new hero versus ’selling out’ for that fourth year truly speaks volumes as to your character. Children across America can look up to you, Mike Lowell, and embrace the model and example that you have set for many generations to come. Your family should be very proud.

Mike - you are the epitome of what the sport is all about. Hardworking, team-focused, classy, and a teriffic role model with a strong desire to win. Boston may not be the easiest town to be a professional athlete but it is only because we (the fans, media, etc..) care more about the Red Sox than just about anything. It might be crazy but it is part of our genetic makeup.
Thanks for helping us bring another World Series trophy back to Boston and I am sure you will be part of another Championship team here in Boston.
November 22nd, 2007 at 8:38 am
glad both mike and curt are sticking around. let’s repeat!
November 22nd, 2007 at 9:01 am
Dear Mike,
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! I want to say thank you for continuing with the Red Sox! You have been me & my friend’s favorite over the past year. You have showed true class in everything you do. I look forward to seeing you get your World Series Ring with the Red Sox, a feat that I don’t think would have happened without your talent and contributions. I’m so happy that you will be returning, I can get that #25 t-shirt without the fear of you not being there.
My friend’s Mom in Miami was crushed when you left the Marlins, I told her that we would take good care of you in Boston, I hope as fans we have done that. We believed in you and you came through again and again and again. Now if I could only meet you in person to say thanks! As my sign said at the parade while I stood on Bolyston, “One Nation Under Lowell!” and it’s true. Welcome back, Happy Thanksgiving, we are thankful for you! - Sarah in Southie
November 22nd, 2007 at 9:01 am
Hi Mike:
Glad your back…
One item I hear no discussion on, is your ability to resign with the Sox in the fourth year.
Just because this contract is only three years long, does not mean you can not resign for $$$ after the 3rd year.
So, you may not be at a loss of those dollars in fourth year afterall.
Let’s hope you are here longer than 3 years.
November 22nd, 2007 at 9:14 am
Mike,
I was so happy to hear that you are coming back to the Red Sox!! I think you deserved as many years as you wanted but i’m glad you took the 3. I’m sure you could have gone elsewhere for more time and money and it just shows what a great guy you are for sticking around. Have an awesome off-season. Looking forward to watching you in ‘08.
Take care,
Jenna M.
November 22nd, 2007 at 9:18 am
Mr. Lowell,
For the last 3 weeks, like most of the Red Sox Nation we’ve been on edge wondering if you would be at the hot corner at Fenway. As with some other folks after the 2004 Championship , they departed for the all mighty dollar after confessing there love for Boston . Loyalty , speaks volumes in any profession and with your decision to come back for less money show’s fans and hopefully other players that playing for a city who love’s you as a player and has the oppertunity to win another champioship speaks volumes , You’ll have your place in New England forever. For your own teammates to hold signs and express themselves to have you back should be very humbling. Mr. Lowell , thanks and we wish the utmost best for you and your family .
The Red Sox Nation are proud to have you as a Red Sox !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike,
WOOHOOO! Grats on your contract and thanks for putting an awesome team, city, your teammates and fans ahead of extra money and all that other stuff. Fans are on the other side of the fence with multi-million dollar contract options, but whether you make $20,000 a year or 12 million a year, another 25% in pay is always tempting. I think we all understand that. I know with everyone coming back you guys will string together another awesome season.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Mike–just as the talk about the playing atmosphere / fans in Boston had begun to seem like so much PR, you go and do something I think 99% of your fellow ballplayers wouldn’t do–choose your team over a richer offer elsewhere. Honestly, I’m flabbergasted. I love all our Red Sox, but I root for the laundry, and reminding myself baseball is a business and letting go of individual players is something I’ve grown used to as a fan. To see you reverse that pattern is nothing short of amazing to me.
You know from all the chants that started as soon as the WS was over how much you mean to Boston and how happy we are you’re staying. But it bears repeating. I, for one, can’t wait to watch you pick the ball in the hole at third and relay it to Youk–watching you and Youk work together is one of my favorite things about the Red Sox. I can’t wait, either, for your first at-bat as a member of the 2008 team; you might want to bring along some earplugs.

Just wanted to add my appreciation for the way you carry yourself, are part of the team, and the decision you’ve made to remain in Boston. In this day and age when ‘getting all you can get’ seems to be the sign of success and winning, it’s good to see that folks can make decisions on the basis of other factors also. Maybe you and Schilling will start a trend?
Thanx,

Mike
As I send this I think of Dave Roberts and Orlando Cabera What they meant to Boston fans what you did last week will put in that status, people will NEVER forget you. You can come to Fenway ten years after you retire and you will still get a standing ovation. Thanks for being a Red Sox player having lived and died with this team since the 60s this is a great time to be a fan.
Thanks

Hi Mike,
I’m not a big message leaver — can’t stand jumping into a froth of rabid commenters on this or that subject, but I did want to leave a message this once.
You’ve been an example for everyone. It’s hard for someone earning what Curt called “normal” wages to relate to the compensation of professional athletes, and I was so heartened to read you saying that you were already financially secure, and that you wanted to follow your heart.
The dream of every working stiff is to make enough money so they can sit back and do what they want.
I don’t get people like A-Rod where even after you’ve reached financial security, you’re still chasing dollars like anything.
Thank you for being an example.
– Ben

Mike Lowell will live in the hearts of Red Sox Nation for ev-vah!!
Thank you, Mike, for staying in Boston. I truly admire the man and great
third baseman you are! You’re a class act and I look forward to seeing
you covering third base for us the next three years!
Wishing you and your family Happy Holidays!

Mike,
I am so incredibly happy that you are returning to the Red Sox for three more years! On the one hand I couldn’t blame you for keeping your options open elsewhere in search for a longer deal, but by coming back it shows your heart is in Boston and we’re thrilled to have you!!! God has given you an amazing gift to be able to play the way you do and put quite simply you and Curt are two of the best class acts I have ever seen. I’m proud to be a Red Sox fan for life!!!

Mike:As a fellow(one year) cancer survivor , both you and Lester were great inspirations for me as I recovered from surgery and irradiation. Dear Mike, I’m so happy to hear the staying in Boston was the right move for you and your family. During your past two years here, you slowly became my favorite player on the Red Sox. I came to admire not only your skill on the field, but the class you showed in every interview, whether on TV, radio or in print. For a bit of extra added luck, I wore my Lowell Red Sox shirt during both days of the Massachusetts bar exam this past July. A few days after you were named World Series MVP, I got the news I had passed the bar. Your positive influence transcends sports!
I send my warmest and best regards to you and to your family, and look forward to three more years with you — now my favorite player of all time –as a member of the Boston Red Sox.

Congratulations to both Curt & Mike for setting the bar for baseball players who use integrity/faith/loyalty to an organization they know will be successful for many years to come, instead of letting the biggest contracts they are offered lead them down a different path. Happy Holidays to all. See you in March!!! Go Sox!!!!!! And as always…………..YANKEES SUCK!! YANKEES SUCK!!!

Mike, have a great Thanksgiving. Very excited and relieved that you are back. You represent the team and the city with great class. Also good luck beating Curt in his computer game.

Mike
I want to thank you for appreciating and accepting our obsession with a baseball team. It is completely illogical, absolutely irrational, and hard for outsiders to comprehend for those very reasons. I know I speak for Red Sox Nation when I say we appreciate your game-to-game consistency, and we’re looking forward to 3 more years.
November 22nd, 2007 at 10:26 am
Hi Mike,
I’ve been a Sox fan since I was about 7 or 8 years old, and I think it’s taken the past 20+ years to get the right combination of players! I’m so glad that you’ve re-signed with the team. You make it fun to watch baseball, and we always feel better about the Sox’s chances to win when you’re in the line-up.
I hope your holiday season allows you to relax a lot with your family, since you’re away from them so often during baseball season.
Thanks,
Olivia

Hi Mike!
Didn’t think i’d ever like anyone in my favorite player Bill Muellers spot, but your the one! Thanks for being the kind of guy my parents are happy I like!
Soooo gad your here to stay for a while!

I would like to thank the both of you for showing my 9 year old son that although baseball is a business its not all about money.
I am proud to be a Red Sox fan, not just because of the success you guys share with us all, but because of the positive way you represent yourselves.
As a parent of a Red Sox Fan I say Thank You

Mike- I am soooo siked your back with the sox. Thank God, i don’t know if i could handle losing another great player to the yankees. I am a born and raised red sox fan growing up in New Jersey and i gotta say, you play the best third base i have ever seen. Hang up that WS MVP award but leave some space because i think there will be a season MVP award coming soon. Take care!~Kevin

First, Thanks Schill for giving fans this opportunity to send messages to Mike Lowell.
Mike - “Thank You” can not adequately express how excited I am and how grateful Red Sox Nation is that you will be back. In an age where egos rule, you show kids the right way to play the game, that you can be a good guy AND be successful, and the right way for a role model to act. I am proud that my kids will get to watch you play at Fenway, and hope that they will someday show the same depth of character you do. Welcome back to Boston Mikey!
November 22nd, 2007 at 10:56 am
Mike,
Thanks for coming back to Boston. You are one of the main reasons that Boston won the world series. You were the MVP of the BoSox this season, could have won a gold glove, and I thank you again for coming back to the best fans in the world!
November 22nd, 2007 at 11:05 am
Curt thanks for allowing us to do this.
Mike,
Your a great player and one of the best defensive third baseman that I’ve ever seen. Your also great in the clutch, and believe me, we as fans of the Boston Red Sox value that almost more than anything. The biggest reason the nation wanted you back is that your the definition of a class act. I can’t tell you how much we appreciate that. It seems like not too long ago the Red Sox clubhouse was one of the worst in baseball, 25 taking different cabs to Fenway for a game. I really wanted to say thank you for being the class act that you are, sometimes people overlook how important that can be. Your an All-Star, a leader, and now you will forever be a legend in Boston. Thank you for re-signing with our team, you can probably count the number of players in the Majors who would have done what you just did on one hand. We are all one big family, and you are a major part of that and will be forever now. It’s nice to know some players really do understand the concept of loyalty, believe me, that goes along way with the fans. Welcome Back.

Thank you for coming back! You are my absolute favorite and I would have been so disappointed if you hadn’t come back. It was thrilling when you won the MVP. Sometimes your heroism goes unsung, and you deserve the recognition. You are a class act, and pretty easy on the eyes.
Looking forward to having you for three more seasons in the best city in the world.
Yay for Curt too. Its great that game two of the WS wont be the last time we get to give you the standing O you deserve.
November 22nd, 2007 at 11:08 am
Mike-
Thanks for staying in Boston. I fell in love with baseball and the Sox growing up in New England in the 60’s, and my wife will tell you that at 51 it’s still the most important thing in my life behind only my family and my faith. Tony C was my favorite player then even over Yaz, Rico,Boomer and the rest because you got the feeling listening to him that he was a genuine person that cared.
I’ve lived in Florida since the 80’s and watched a lot of Marlins games in the 90’s. I appreciated your play and perseverance then and when you were “thrown in” the Beckett trade I was estatic. Your professionalism and class has been evident from day one, but really came to the forefront, in my mind this week during your negotiations. Congratulations on the contract and thank you from us old school guys that still appreciate substance over glitter. People like you, Curt, Tek etc are the reason I still love baseball in today’s world. Thank you

Mike!!!
Welcome back to Red Sox nation. I read a transcript of an interview you did shortly after signing and understand how it was a tough choice for you. As much as I loathe the Yankees, I must admit I am happy they got A-Rod and we get you. If they don’t keep A-rod at third, this thread may have been a thank you and good luck to you.
Instead - we get a 3rd Champeeeeeeeeeeenship in 5 years. The 2008 Red Sox are hands down the BEST TEAM as were the 2007 Red Sox. The Yankees may have, arguably, the best player in the game. Too bad Red Sox Nation will get The Hardware.
Good luck fellas. I will see you in Arlington next year.
Curt, I got to see you guys here in TX this year a few times and the best game I have ever seen live was Sunday April 8th, 2007. I purposefully purchased right field seats in the event that Papi hits one out. I was second section. Papi hits one to the first section AND one to the third section. Only Red Sox runs of the game scored on those two shots (3 RBI’s). You pitched a 7 inning, 4 hit, 1 run gem. As soon as the Rangers made a rally against Pineiro, I knew it was time for Paps. I told the entire section that as soon as he trotted out with 5 outs to go - they might as well pack up. Sure enough, 15 pitches and 5 outs later (his only 5 out save in the regular season), they were packing their stuff. Amazing. You guys are the best!
November 22nd, 2007 at 11:21 am
Mike Lowell, you are the man. Thank you for extending your stay in Boston!
And Curt Schilling, thank you for 38 Pitches!
November 22nd, 2007 at 11:22 am
While I know its odd to say thanks to someone who signed a contract for more money then I will earn in my lifetime, but understanding that you and Mike both work in a field that requires much more mental and physical effort than I will ever put out myself, let alone much more time away from your families, I do appreciate that Mike signed with the Sox for much less than he would have received from another baseball club, and do, as a fan, appreciate it.
We all look forward to seeing Mike at third base for another 3 years and watch a classy guy play hard every day. I am sure I am not alone in my sentiments that I would much have rather had Mike back with the Sox than have ARod there - that would be a bitter pill to swallow. Its so much easier to cheer for Mike to do well, when he seems to be a nice person and a hard worker.
Best of luck, please continue to confuse all of us and win some more World Series titles. For years we accepted our fate as always losing, now after having 2004 and 2007 championships, we are slowly overcoming this and realizing that the claimed curse created by the CHB was merely the result of poor management.
Besides, no one else on the team has eyebrows that can match the size of mine.
November 22nd, 2007 at 11:24 am
Thank you Mr. Schilling!
I was leaving for a part time job late in the afternoon and decided to check the dirtdog to see if we (RSN) had any news on Mike — when I saw the awsome news!!!!
I shouted “YES — THANK YOU GOD — THANK YOU! — Now, let’s get Mike Timlin, too!”
I am most impressed by the CHRISTians on my beloved Sox!
And, you know when one player after another speaks out on behalf of another player, that it is critical to the future of the Sox to keep that individual.
I truly wanted to believe that Mike Lowell was like some others on our wondrous Sox - not just about money!
I have been a Red Sox fan as long as I can remember (early 50’s) and treasure the memory of The Kid, Mel Parnell, Tony C, Yaz, Pudge, Rico, Fred Lynn, etc.
Now, we have the latest additions to the list, Curt, Josh, Big Papi — and MIKE LOWELL, playing the game as it was meant to be played!
May God continue to bless you as you seek to play many years for the pleasure of RSN!
Thank you Curt! Thank you Mike Lowell! You have helped restore our faith in being a band of brothers!

Thanks to both Curt and Mike for putting their priorities in order for personal and family happiness. Red Sox Nation benefits from both of you sharing your professional talents with our local “beloved” team for a few more years with many exciting opportunities ahead!!
By the way, Mike, “The Hot Corner” or “Gold Glove” should be the name of the restaurant you open in the Boston area sometime in the near future. I am sure it will be quite successful and be “embraced” by all the good folks in New England just as you and your family have been since your arrival.
Thanks again to both you and Curt for ALL your contributions to the Red Sox and your local community. By the way, this is the first blog response or e-mail I have ever written to any professional athelete etc. , but thought your recent positive actions (new contracts) mandated some type of response and simple note of “thanks” on this Thanksgiving Day.

Thank you to both Curt and Mike for showing baseball fans that there is such a thing as loyalty and that money doesn’t always win out in the end. During this turbulent time for baseball, it’s refreshing to see two men of such honor and character help lead a team so near and dear to our hearts. Your hard work, dedication, and passion both on and off the field, in baseball and in the world, are priceless gifts. I hope you all have a blessed holiday season.
With the utmost respect,

Mr. Lowell,
Thank you for deciding to remain a member of the Red Sox. Over the past two years it has been a pleasure to watch your professionalism on - and off - the field. Your contributions to the 2007 World Series win were invaluable and I look forward to seeing you play over the next three seasons.
As a father it has been wonderful to see a player at your level play the game as it should be played: With passion, integrity and dignity, and to share your sportsmanship with my children.
Good luck and God Bless.

Happy Thanksgiving! Red Sox Nation thanks first of all Curt Shilling for staying in Boston, and for providing this forum to also thank Mike Lowell for staying, too.
It’s refreshing to see that not everyone is only interested in getting as much money as possible, and to heck with their fan base. This World Series winning team seems to be a real decent group of men, and that really makes me proud to be a Red Sox fan.
Thank you!!

I’m a Yankee fan and I belong in this place just about as much as a guy named Goldberg belongs in a secret barn meeting in Mississippi! But in this age where players and their greedy agents squeeze every dollar they possibly can out of those insanely bloated contracts, and screw their fans over in the process, what Mike Lowell did is really cool! Mike loves the city of Boston. He loves and cares about the fans that have embraced him. He loves his teammates and loves playing baseball for the Red Sox. He also realizes that you can live just as well on $37.5 million than you can on $50 million. Our third baseman may be a little better, has a brighter star, has more homers and RBI’s, and makes a lot more money. But he still has to buy his rings at a jewelry store. Kudos to you Mike, you are a class act and baseball needs more guys like you!

Thanks Curt for giving us fans a chance to do this!
Hey Mike,
Reading all of these messages, I think everyone has said it all. I just want to tell you thanks for all you have done and will continue to do for this team. Thank you for playing through aches and pains (every time you foul a ball off your foot I cringe). I am so proud to be not only a Red Sox fan, but a Mike Lowell fan as well. Thanks!
November 22nd, 2007 at 12:14 pm
Awesome idea Curt…thanks for all you do for the Sox organization..I’m glad that you will be coming back as well!
Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks so much to Mike Lowell for leaving money on the table and remaining with the Red Sox…we all love you so much, you’re an awesome, classy guy. It’s very hard to come by ball players like you anymore…it seems like more often than not everyone is always all about the money. Red Sox Nation is so thankful to have you back, I was a bit worried there for a while but I knew you would eventually come back. You care so much about your fans and the city of Boston. Welcome back WORLD SERIES MVP!!!! I can’t wait for spring training to begin!

Mikey,
Thank you for returning to the Sox. You are a true dirtdog on the field and off the field and taking this 3 year, $37.5 million deal just goes to show how much of a dirtdog you really are. All of us over here at RedSox Nation love you brother. Keep it up out there, Im feeling another World Series MVP in you over these next 3 years.
Go Sox!
Thanks again!
Sincerely,

This is great. I had a feeling you would stay here. I love that you quietly go out every day a perform with your bat and glove and not your mouth.
You are a true professional who puts the team, the game, and the fans ahead money and fame. That to me is what makes a baseball player great.
Thank You.

Mike,
Thank you for signing back with the Sox. This year was an amazing one, and your efforts were recognized by all. I am a dislocated Sox fan in Cali, and I just wanted you to know that your popularity in Boston was equaled out here. SOX ‘08, BACK TO BACK!

Coming out of lurker mode to say Thanks Mike. Not just for returning to us (tho I’m wicked psyched you are) but for being such a class act. I have enjoyed watching you play here these last couple of years. Your skills and your temperment are well suited for this environment and even when the game doesn’t go well for the Sox you face the press with honesty and candor that I have noticed and I appreciate. I’m glad that you and your family are heading back to us. We’re lucky to have you.

You’ve been my favorite since you arrived in Boston! THANKS for a terrific year and for choosing to stay with the Sox! Enjoy the off season and I can’t wait to hear the ovation when you come out onto the field to receive your much- deserved ring!!!! Thanks again!

As a proud member of Red Sox Nation, I’m so excited to see that both of you are returning next year. Its really awesome to see two great players who want to stay with their team.
You both are fan favorites and you guys coming back really shows us, the fans, why we love you guys so much.
Thanks Mike! Thanks Curt!

November 22nd, 2007 at 2:14 pm
Mike Lowell,
Welcome back to the redsox. In the wake of A-Rod siging a 275 million dollar contract, it is nice to see a player choose to stay with a team whose fans have embraced him since day one, rather than chasing dollar signs from other teams. Im sure everyone you read about siging those mega contracts would trade it in a heartbeat for what you have, a World Series ring.
Welcome Back to Beantown Mike, and id love to see you hoisting that WS trophy again in Oct of 08
November 22nd, 2007 at 2:57 pm
Dear Mr. Lowell,
Thank you very much for returning to the Red Sox and proving that baseball isn’t always about the money. Watching you play for the last couple of years has been a pleasure, and I look forward to watching you play here for the next three years to come. (I would have given you four years!) You exemplify the way baseball should be played, and I am proud to wear a jersey with your name on it around, especially when I am home in Yankee territory in New Jersey. Just hearing that you had resigned was enough to make my day the best in a long time, and I can’t wait to see you bring another championship to the city of Boston next year.
November 22nd, 2007 at 3:35 pm
Mike, You’ve done what every member of the nation has hoped you’d do, not only did you help us win another championship, you came back for one year less than the market offered. Not many red sox players get the opportunity to do it on and off the field but you did. You’re up there with yaz, tony c, schill, pedro, and all the other greats. To three more years in beantown!
November 22nd, 2007 at 3:36 pm
It’s Thanksgiving day and i am sitting all by myself in my Arizona State Dorm room. i didnt have enough money to buy a plane ticket home to Auburn, Mass. for thankgiving due to the fact that i used it up on a ticket home on October 23rd because you guys made it to the World Series and i just felt that was a little more important!!!! But i am DEFINITELY THANKFUL For all the offseason re-signs like Curt Schilling and Mike Lowell!!!!!! I couldnt be any happier with the way the team won the series in 2004 and 2007!!! almost identical playoff results. i attended Game 3 in anaheim in ‘07 and sat behind Larry Lucchino!!! Happy Thanksgiving Mike And Curt and RED SOX NATION IS GLAD TO HAVE YOU GUYS BACK!!!!
November 22nd, 2007 at 3:50 pm
Mike,
All i can say is thanks. I know you could have went somewhere else for more money and years, your professionalism and loyalty will NEVER be forgotten in Boston. You and Curt realize that there is something special going on in Boston and lets keep the magic going in 08!
November 22nd, 2007 at 4:04 pm
Dear Mike Lowell,
Thank You for being awesome at life and baseball. Looking forward to seeing you play 162 (hopefully more) games this year.

Thank you to Mike Lowell for returning for 3 more great years. You are rock solid. You were and always will be the third basemen for us. No doubt about it. Congratulations to you and your family. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us in Red Sox Nation. Take care.
November 22nd, 2007 at 5:13 pm
THANK YOU, MIKE LOWELL!!
You are such a fabulous role model for my son in so many ways! Our whole family is beyond ecstatic that you’re back with the Sox for another three years. Thanks for giving Red Sox Nation another very happy Thanksgiving and thanks for being such a great guy, on and off the field!
November 22nd, 2007 at 5:19 pm
Dear Mike,
You were my MVP all year, so I am beyond thrilled that you’re returning to Fenway, which apparently was tailored made just for you!
Thank you for a great year and post-season. We’re so lucky to have you in Boston. Enjoy your winter, because we’re all counting down the days until Spring Training!
November 22nd, 2007 at 6:34 pm
Hello from Oklahoma to Mike and family,
As a member of Red Sox Nation living in the heartland, I want to let you know how delighted I am that you will be back at third base for the Red Sox. You are the type player that makes me happy to be a Red Sox fan! I’m already looking forward to spring training and next season.
Wow, what a ride it was this year and you were such a big part of it!
Thanks again for helping us to win another World Series. Unbelievable!
Go Red Sox! Kathryn
November 22nd, 2007 at 6:42 pm
Mike. I thought the odds were extremely high against the Red Sox being able to bring back both Curt and you. Seeing it happen is like getting an early Christmas present. Thanks, it’s going to be awesome watching you play again next year. Enjoy your World Series ring and have a great offseason.
November 22nd, 2007 at 7:04 pm
Thanks for acknowledging that millions of dollars can make a person financially stable. Obviously, you’re doing this professionally and rightfully expect to get compensated fairly, but I think that these days, many players get too greedy. It’s nice to read about players like Lowell who are not afraid to remain loyal to the team and work hard, even if there might be more lucrative offers elsewhere.

Hey Lowellie,
Thank you so much for being the great guy that we all know you are and leaving alot of money in my eyes on the table to stay here and play in a place that you love and a place that loves to have you here.So Thank you once again and remember that you still will get another contract out of the Soxs after you finish up this three years. We all know that you are not going to all of a sudden fall off after these next three years. SO have fun win us some more titles and a few more World Series MVP trophys for you… Have a great offseason and looking forward to see you and all the guys at spring training..Thank You We All Love You Guys….Happy THanksgiving to you also….
November 22nd, 2007 at 8:37 pm
Dear Mike, From all we have seen and read about your personal character on-field and off-field it should not surprise us that you left money and a year on the table to stay with our beloved Red Sox. But it does surprise us, because in this day and age it seems the majority of ballplayers will go to the highest bidder. You guys work hard, it’s a grind and a long season, but let’s face it….millions are millions, what’s a few more if it means giving up the greatest teammates on earth in the best sports city on earth? Can you imagine life without Big Papi? Would you want to bat against your buddy Josh? Of course not! We’re thrilled to have our World Series MVP back for 3 more years. And we can’t wait to show our appreciation when you accept your ring on Opening Day. God bless you and your family.
November 22nd, 2007 at 9:01 pm
Mikey Lowell!
We love you out here in Oklahoma! My buddy and I go to every game in Texas and Kansas City every year, and we try to make one trip up to Boston per year — we live and breathe with the team, and it wouldn’t be the same without you back again.
Leave A-Rod in New York! We have the real MVP.
November 22nd, 2007 at 9:31 pm

You staying here gives me hope in today’s baseball world that there still actually exists loyalty and a reason to be playing other then money. Good Luck the next 3 years

As a Sox fan living in the St Louis area, I did get to see you play several times at Busch Stadium. I was “pleased as punch” when the Red Sox got you from the Marlins. Now I’m even more ecstatic you’ve decided to stay with the Red Sox. That’s absolutely fantastic.
Here’s hoping you get a couple more World Series Championship rings with the Sox.
Thank you for sticking around Boston. I’ve always felt you were a classy guy and I believe the Red Sox got awful lucky when you came aboard..
November 22nd, 2007 at 11:43 pm
Hi Curt, just wanted to thank you for having this blog to keep us posted on things; i also want to let you know that in todays times it is oh so refreshing to have a “person in the spotlight” who seems to have his priorities and values and place and lets them be heard and shown. I respect and appreciate your example as a Christian in todays world where so many will be judgemental of standing up for what you value and believe in. Am pumped you will be with us for one more year!! And thanks for having this area for us to write to Mike Lowell, too, cause i just have to say that
MIKE, You made my Thanksgiving early for me this year. I was sooooo relieved and psyched on Monday when my friend told me you were re-signing with Boston!! Evey day i was waiting to hear what you would do and when she said “Did you hear about Lowell?” and i had not yet, my heart was in my throat ’cause we did not want to lose you, not that i would have blamed you with the mor “lucrative” offers out there. But, let’s face it, why in the world would you wanna be any where else but Boston?!?! (OK, so i am just a tad biased!!!)
I don’t know which part makes me the happiest and proudest of you, of course the fact that you ARE staying here is thrilling, but am so very happy that you, as well as Curt, don’t put the primary value on the almighty buck!! It is truly refreshing to know that your decision was not based on the money but other factors in a career where it seems like money is usually the bottom line ( hello, Johnny Damon et al….) As a member of a Nation, who is too familiar with long suffering, thank you, Mike and Curt, for not prolonging our angst.
With a pre-holidays signing, we can now exhale, not wonder when the other shoe will drop, relax in the offseason, and actually revel in our World Series Win.
Thank you for being a credit to your profession.
Can’t wait until next year - Go Sox in 2008!!

Hi Mike,
It’s been a real pleasure to root for one of the best “throw ins” (what a joke) ever to come of a Sox trade the last two years. A player you can count on to be hard-working and productive on both offense and defense is always a pleasure to watch. But more importantly, I’m so thrilled that the Sox have managed to bring back by all accounts one of the most important leaders on this team, and unquestionably a positive part of the clubhouse and the community. I haven’t read through this thread on Curt’s blog, but I think I can speak for everyone when I say that a professional athlete leaving money on the table to remain in a city that absolutely adores him and on a team that looks poised to be dominant for quite a long time is very admirable, if rare behavior. I’m definitely looking forward to continuing to watch you and the rest of the guys battle for three more years, and as a fan it’s hard to ask for anything more given the success of this team and the awesome attitude and personalities of it. Thanks for making what I’m sure you, the front office, and us as fans will look back on after three years as the best we all could have hoped for.

Mike Lowell,
To say “thanks” seems profoundly inadequate, but we will say it anyway, “…THANKYOU!!”
RedSox Nation is thriving, and we have players like you to thank for it. The Red Sox have emerged as the best team in baseball because of the mere fact they love to play baseball, love playing at the greatest ballpark in history, love playing with each other and love their fans!! Well, we love you back!! It’s as simple as that, a win - win - win- win situation!
Our Redsox worked together like a well oiled machine throughout the regular season and only increased speed & production in the post season. My family and I are proud to say we are RedSox fans; and pride runs deep here in New England. The character of our RedSox surpasses any team in the major league and for that we are forever proud, and grateful. Thanks for a great year and we are looking forward to watching you continue your stellar play on third base for another three years!!

Mike,
I’m a Sox fan who lives in France, where following the Sox means getting up at 1am from April through October to watch the games. It costs me time and effort (and much-needed sleep!) to do so that, but when I read about a player who left a lot of money on the table to stay with the Sox, it makes all the effort worthwhile.
There are those who will say that when you’re talking about 37 million for 3 years or 50 million for 4, it really doesn’t matter. But that’s true all over baseball, and yet it doesn’t stop players from chasing the extra dollars from team to team, year after year. And to the fans, it does matter - we see a ‘throw-in’ who, in the space of two seasons, has become a fan favourite on the field, a valued clubhouse presence and a World Series MVP, and who said “I could maybe make more money elsewhere, but I really want to stay in Boston and play with this team, for this management and in front of these fans.” You know as well as we do that this doesn’t happen every day…Thanks for making that decision and for reminding us that, although baseball is a business, it’s not *always* about the $$$.
If an English guy living in France is entitled to speak on behalf of Red Sox Nation, he’d like to say this:
We’re proud and honoured to have you back.
Iain

mike,
i am so glad you are back because without your glove, bat, leadership, integrity, and professionalism that 2007 world series championship would never had happened. i have been a red sox lifer (35 yrs). i have had many favorites as the years have passed. yaz, dwight evans, clemens, boggs, fred lynn, tek, schil, and lowell.
knowing how much you wanted that 4th year, but still you decided being with a caring and a winning org. was worth leaving millions and that 4th year on the table. that just shows me and my children what type of person you are. i also read that the soxs had over 400 official community interactions.
the red sox are moving in the right direction and doing it the right way. you play for what is now the model org. and i route (and live for) that model org. this positive move could not be possible without you and you teammates.
thanks for being a role model and your play over the next 3 years will get you that 4th and maybe 5th yr you were seeking. thanks for being you.

I’ve dubbed you the sexiest man in baseball on the site I made for you, the George Clooney of baseball actually.. And I get many girls sending me messages, agreeing.
My 2008 life goal is to:
1) attend a game that the man, the myth, the legend the Schill pitches
2) to meet you. Or at least get seats close enough to see you up close. And Varitek. He’s my other sexual obsession. Pretty much every man on the team, but you’ve got the entire MLB leagues beat out.
Oh, if you just type in Mike Lowell Fan Page in google, your site should come up. Lots of people see it everyday. And I’m glad I can help share your inspiring & heroic life to fans all around the country
If you’re ever single in the future – please marry me.

Mike and Curt,
I can never know what it is like to have to weigh contract decisions of the magnitude that professional athletes do. The average person looks and says what’s the difference between five million a year or ten million a year. Its more money than you could ever spend. Fans take it all personally, like when Johnny Damon decided to take the offer from the Yankees. But your decisions have to be made in regard to your families and their futures also. I probably have a little insight into that because toward the end of my military career I got to know the Ripken family here in Maryland while coaching a Little League team with one of the Ripken brothers.
I’d just like to say that even if you guys had decided to move on and take offers from other teams you are both class acts. I’m thrilled, though, that you decided to continue to play for our beloved Red Sox. Fans don’t usually get the opportunity to see the true character of the athletes they admire, only the public face, but in your cases I can say that you are both wonderful people, not because you are great ball players, but because you are guys that I can say to my son “those are men worthy of admiring and emulating”. We are lucky there are quite a few of you on the team.
I wish you continued blessings in the coming years and look forward to seeing you play when you make your way to Baltimore and Philadelphia this season. Heck, I might even find my way back up to Boston for the first time in seven seasons.
God Bless
PS. I became a grandfather today!!

Lowell: THANKS!
you did something very few pro athletes do; you put your team and its success ahead of a FEW more million bucks. You guys are all rich guys, there’s no denying it, so to realize that and to take a little bit less cash to stay on a KILLER team is a huge move. The fans in boston will treat you as a hero for the rest of your life. You’ll have to pay for dinner in the city, wait for a table, wait in line, etc.. you just sealed you fate as one of the Boston sports GREATS of our time.
Again, THANKS!
November 23rd, 2007 at 9:16 am
Dear Mike,
Thank you so much for staying in Boston! I’m a high school teacher and during the playoffs I hung your jersey up in my classroom. I was afraid to take it down until after you signed because I didn’t want to jinx anything!
I’ve been a Red Sox fan since I was 8 years old, and if you look at my list of favorite players in that span of time, they all have one thing in common: they are class acts. That, Mr. Lowell, is why you are my favorite player…though your numbers certainly help too! I did not speak to a single person this offseason who didn’t want you to sign back with Boston, and the sentiment was always the same: no matter what numbers you put up on the field, nobody could replace what you mean to this team—and this city—off the field.
Thank you for bringing some holiday cheer to Boston a little early. Enjoy the rest of the offseason, and I can’t wait until you guys try to repeat in ‘08!

Curt and Mike,
There really aren’t words to express what your willingness to stay with the Red Sox mean to people in New England and around the world. It has been a pleasure to watch you play but it has been a bigger pleasure to watch you lead by example. I think it says a great deal about a player to have his teammates agitating for his resigning before the All-Star break.
You’ve given so many people yet another reason to be thankful this year.
Thank you both, have a safe, happy and healthy off-season, and welcome back!

Thanks Mike. 2004 was great, stunning, amazing, and far beyond words. With everything Curt and everyone overcame…I just cannot imagine another year like it. However, we lost so many key players from that squad.
You may have been the key bat in the lineup this year from Opening Day to Game 4 of the World Series. Thank you. We need you back. And thank you for choosing baseball over business. These days, we all need a little more of that.

Mike-
There isn’t a more fitting time to give thanks than this. So, thanks: for all you’ve done and will do in the uniform, and, more importantly, all you’ve done in the past few weeks. In a world - the sporting world and otherwise - that is often overwhelmed by greed, it’s refreshing to see someone “step up to the plate” and stand for something that really matters- good ol’ fashion loyalty.
So, thanks, Mike! See you at third!

Thanks Mike,
It shows a lot of who you are by taking less money to stay in Boston. I realize that money is important, I mean who would say its not, but I am glad that you came to the conclusion that the extra money may not be worth sacrificing what you have here in terms of environment. Hey, and at the end of three years the Sox will be looking to sign you to an even bigger contract right? Good luck this year Mike.

Thanks from way down in Texas! Since we don’t get any Sox games unless they are broadcast nationally, I have to first say thanks to the whole team for making it to the playoffs so I could watch my favorite team! Now, to Mikey, one of my most very favorite world series MVPs, thank you so much! I checked the web daily and agonized over the fact that you might not be back-you mean so much to fans and the other players. You’re a true class act and one of the best in the league, not only for your skills on the field but your heart and soul off the field. Now guys-we have a team set up good-lets go out there and win another ring in 2008! Thanks for being the Red Sox!

Mike,
Thanks for always being a class act; on and off the field. It has been a pleasure watching your smooth, effortless play at third, and those clutch a-bats.
Though I’m sure it gave your agent/s fits, giving up those huge contracts, it clearly demonstrated your, (And your family’s) values, and your intelligence. You’re the Bizzaro A-Rod, and I’m so glad we’ll be able to cheer you and Curt on in 2008 and beyond.
All the best,

Given everything that’s been said about you, Mike, I wasn’t that surprised to see you leave $ on the table to stay in Boston. No one could fault you for wanting to check out free agency for the first time in your career, and trying to get the sox to ante up their offer a bit, especially after the stellar year you had. You have been amazingly consistant for the last two years - on the field, at the plate, and from what we’ve heard, in the clubhouse, too. Thanks for all the hard work you put in day after day during a long season. Enjoy the off-season! I wouldn’t be surprised if you can make up some of that money lost with sponsorships, and hopefully you will be justly rewarded in your decision by being a part of more championship-caliber teams. The future sure looks bright, and brighter still knowing that you will be a part of it. Thanks.

Dear Mike and Curt,
I don’t know if you realize just how passionate the Red Sox fans are about the players. Johnny Damon broke our hearts when he left for the evil empire (although we are well over that now). Mike, I know it must have been difficult for you to pass up that 4th year, and your decision to do so says a lot about your character. You and Schill are both class acts. I can now sleep at night knowing you will be back with the Red Sox. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you and I wish you the best. Let’s have a repeat in 2008!

April 15th, there was an expected Nor’easter headed into Boston. We took a drive up from Long Island anyway because we had tickets. We thought that at the very least, my daughter’s boyfriend (who wanted the tickets for Christmas), would be able to take a peek inside the park for the first time in his life. As soon as we pulled up to Yawkey Way, the game was called. We walked around Fenway anyway so that I could tell him all about what was beyond those walls. As we walked around to the players lot, you were just walking out. Thinking quick on my feet, so that I could say something, anything to you, I asked if you knew when the game would be rescheduled for. You replied “No.” Now I tell everyone that Mike Lowell once talked to me and my husband chimes in - “Yeah, he told her no.” (It makes him feel better- so whatever.)
Thanks for 3 more years of turning the temp down on the AC when you come to bat. :-))

Iron Mike,
I just wanted to say how much we appreciate you sticking with the Sox. My fiance’ and I live in Charlotte, NC. She teaches 4th grade and rocked your T-shirt the day after Game 4 of the WS. She got complimented on the shirt all day. She purchased it in ‘06 when we were in Boston for a game. Anyhow, a Yankee fan came out and asked her how she got the shirt so fast, you know since you won MVP. She politely replied that we Sox fans stand by our 3rd baseman. The poor Yankee fan wasn’t the brightest and failed to notice the wear of the shirt. Considering it was washed a dozen times.
Keep doing what you do and may God Bless You.
Sincerely,
