SWEET! 11.19.07 at 1:43 pm ET
By Curt Schilling

Per ESPN Mikey Lowell is back. How cool is that? Leaving years and dollars on the table to come back here for three more years, good stuff. Pretty nice to think you are fans in a town that is now a desired destination for athletes across the major sports. Come a long way for sure.

Congrats to Mike and I’ve already spoken with a few guys on the team and suffice to say we’re all ectstatic. Now to get back to the FF beatings he’s been taking all year!

  1. Ian Says:

At least now everyone will stop asking you questions about it.

It’s great that the Sox were able to re-sign both you and Lowell.

Best of luck to you and I hope you and your family have a great holiday season.

  2. seantanu Says:

38pitches.com scoops again! How ecstatic RSN must be.

  3. soxfanatic38 Says:

Now we can say for sure that it does not get better than this!

Next year will be truly amazing with this group of players. We might have to be careful not to run up the score!!

Enjoy the offseason and the holidays with your family.

  4. botch Says:

A Big Sigh of relief. I can’t express how happy I am that Mike’s back and we are intact. I will be giving Thanks on Thursday for a wonderful Red Sox team. Happy Thanksgiving Schill.

  5. jnick67a Says:

Awesome news indeed. I am excited Mike is coming back but equally excited that this didn’t drag out through the Winter.

  6. pbrokesportsdad6 Says:

The difference between a guy like Mike Lowell and the one the Sox let walk after the 2005 season is Lowell is a not just a quality player but an even higher quality person and he would not look good in pinstripes …

  7. winslow1191 Says:

Awwwwwwwesome!!! I’ve been on the edge of my seat since the end of the series waiting for this news.

This is from the Nomar school of “better to be 30 million short and miserable than wealthy and happy. NOT!!!!!

Thanks for the news, Shill. Another WS title on the horizon!!

  8. billygoats Says:

Now if we only knew if Coco will be moved this off season!

Congrats to Lowell for re-signing, and congrats to you for this fast post and keeping us in the loop! :)

  9. fenwayarchitect Says:

    More good off-season news!

  10. denisesoxfan Says:

WOOOO-HOOOO AGAIN! Curt and Mike are back! WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR!!!!!
    :)

  11. bpeter289 Says:

Great move by the Red Sox.

Mike Lowell left at least another year and more money on the table, but he decided to stick with the Red Sox.

    What a classy guy.

All the Red Sox players, especially yourself Curt, love him.

    He embraces the Fenway faithful.

And most importantly, he respects the game unlike some other people (ie Barry Bonds) and gives it his all every time out on the field.

  12. rojs Says:

    Definitely Sweet!!!

    Repeat in 08!

  13. natefrancis Says:

Good news. It’ll be great seeing the whole championship team be able to walk out on that field in April and get their rings in the right uniforms.

Now let’s hope Mike’s body and bat speed hold up for the next 36 months!

  14. rlgdguy Says:

Let’s hope it’s true Curt! This says alot about Mike Lowell if it is. If it’s true, he like yourself is a stand-up guy and wants to play where he has the best chance of winning.

When this is confirmed, it will be another great moment that brings the Red Sox World Championship season full circle!

When do pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training?

  15. ashleybartolome Says:

Scchhillllll now I have TWO MORE reasons to spend hundreds upon hundreds of dollars on Sox tickets.

You’re back. And now Lowell. !!!

I’m going to try my best to buy tickets to the last game you picth this regular season… it’s gonna be big bucks though. Probably more than the game I paid 450 for two tickets to the game you pitched last season against that a-hole clemens.

but you’re back, Mikey’s back, I have no complaints man. Schill you rock.

  16. bobmetcalf Says:

Contrast this with the A-Fraud and Boras leaning into the WS

to leak his departure, then crawling back to the Steinbrenner

sprats with his tail between his legs!

We got the right (and classier) guy!

Thanks Mikey Lowell–when does Spring Training start?

  17. sdredsoxfan Says:

    Curt,

Thank you for the news. What great news it is. Having Mikey back and you back along with the rest of the guys is wonderful. We are bound to have another great year in 2008. I hope you and your family have a great holiday season. See you and the rest of the guys in 2008.

  18. ctsoxnation Says:

Another reason to be thankful this coming season. First we sign Curt over Thanksgiving a few years back and now Mike Lowell. Thanksgiving is definitely a great time of the year for Theo and Sox Nation. Happy Thanksgiving to you and the rest of the Schilling Family.

    Your fan for life,

    Derek

  19. mauimatt Says:

Nice! What a contrast to the classless A-Rod negotiations. What a joke. I’m looking forward to seeing Yankee fans pretend to like A-Rod for the next decade.

Suffice it to say Curt, we’re all thrilled to have you both back next year.

  20. mcksoxfan Says:

Having followed the Sox for over 40 years I’ve got to say that although every year brings a new “flavor” or team personality, 2007 just seemed different. The chemistry and the respect that you guys seemed to have for one another felt (as a fan) to have gone to another level than I have seen in the past.

My first real sense of this was with Josh Beckett’s change in demeanor, maturity and obvious partnership with Tek. To me (a fan not a peer) He became a “pitcher” this year where before he was a guy who could pitch but would resort to throwing when the situation got challenging. This transformation was palpable.

My final sense of this was watching Mike Lowell have the opportunity to show what exactly he is made of as a player and an individual over the course of a season. I will welcome back his “subtle presence of strength” to the lineup and be thankful for the things he will no doubt demonstrate to the young guns coming up.

  21. mattod Says:

Now that the team is back lets win it again next year. Go Sox!

  22. djbw Says:

yet another great day to be a boston sports fan.you are right the complexion of this city and region has changed so much in my lifetime it is astounding.it is hard to pinpoint the exact time that it all changed but no one can argue that the ownership of this red sox team has been and continues to be a major player in that regard.not trying to blow any smoke at you but your decision to come here was a major contributor in that area. I hope that fact is a source of pride for you.

on a personal note I cant believe you dont want to share with the world just what exactly you do with your money.LOL

you have to admit that guy has major Stones.

    God Bless Woody

  23. soxwin28 Says:

YES awesome. I was a little worried for a while…

  24. khsox2000 Says:

this is a great thing to hear!! I know with Mike’s age everyone has been a little skeptical that production might drop off. While it’s a valid concern, i think i’d give him that contract just to be around the clubhouse. From everything i’ve heard, he brings so much more than just rbi’s to the team and it’s great to have that kind of leadership in the clubhouse with guys like ellsbury and buchholz starting their careers. Thanks for all you do curt and good luck in ‘08!

  25. clord Says:

Awesome!!! I wake up and immediately check NESN every day for a hint of Mike’s fate… this is great news!!!!

Fire up the Duck Boats, baby… the trophy’s coming back home in ‘08!

    Chuck

  26. dconti77 Says:

hey curt, looking forward to spending another year with you guys.

Look for me out behind the pen yelling day in and day out.

  27. texredsoxfan Says:

amazing news! i just about jumped out of my seat when i heard!! i’m so glad that both of you will be back next year! have a great off season! can’t wait ’til spring

  28. justagirlinboston Says:

Wow! I left this morning and the word on ESPN was that the offer was out there and that he was mulling it over…and now, you’re saying it’s done. Woohoo. How cool is that?? :)

It must really be a sigh of relief to the team as a whole that the main pieces to the puzzle are in place, and now you guys can really begin to enjoy the offeseason and the prospects of the future.

Wow - this is the best news I’ve heard all day - and trust me, today’s been a day of news in my neck of the woods. :)

  29. ike6116 Says:

    What is an FF beating?

  30. kathinnh Says:

    WoooHoooo!!!

    Yeah Boston!!!

I’m proud to be a Red Sox fan - we <3 Mike Lowell!

Thank you, thank you, thank you,

    Kath

  31. theotherm Says:

    YEA!!!!!

  32. kikiman04 Says:

    Curt

This is my first time here so…. first off, congrats on re-signing with the Red Sox. I live in Arizona and I am a big Dodger fan and I got to tell you, I was happy to see you go east and to the American League. I root for the BoSox on the American League side because I went to the University of Arizona and one of my baseball hero’s was Terry Francona. I just wanted your opinion on Joe Torre’s move out here to the West and with the Dodgers. What do you think that’ll do to the baseball landscape?

  33. soxwally Says:

Saw the story this morning and the confirmation later. I have been checking the website several times a day for news on Mike Lowell. What a class act he is, I really love him. Now we can all breathe a little easier.

  34. manny4mvp Says:

It’s fantasy football. Now back to the subject matter, I am so pumped about your’s and Mikes signings. Curt are you willing to share any inside knowledge about Mike Timlin’s plans? I know he filed for free agency but is he thinking about another year in Boston, or maybe going somewhere down south, or is the R word possibly entering his vocabulary?

  35. redsoxfanuk Says:

great news that lowell is coming back! nice that the core of the team is staying together! looks like ill be making the trip over the pond again next year! ill start saving!!

  36. 12string Says:

While I’m certainly pleased Lowell will be back, it’s lousy that he apparently has received LESS con$ideration than last year’s UFA $ignees, Lugo and Drew. $orry, but he deserved better OR Lugo and Drew merited comparable (rather than $uperior) treatment.

  37. ange2386 Says:

thanks for keeping us up to date, curt! i’m pretty excited about having mike back :)

next year is shaping up to be a good one!!

  38. ange2386 Says:

    ps - happy thanksgiving!

  39. yankee26 Says:

    Dear Curt,

Obviously, I’m a Yankee fan. But I’m not one of those idiots that can’t recognize that you are a fantastic pitcher and the Red Sox are the team to be reckoned with in the East right now. So, I’m not here to bust balls. I’m here to offer some advice. And it is this: DUDE, USE SPELL CHECK! Now, I understand that spelling is not the most important thing in the world. However, when your stories get picked up by a mainstream news outlet, the first thing my buddies and I do is run through it and see how many times you write something like “ectstatic.” It brings joy to my day! But lately I’ve come to realize that I don’t like having my day brightened by a Red Sox player. So, if you could please start using spell check, I would be ecstatic.

    Thanks a bunch!

Apologies for the misspelling, especially given that I care about getting it right. I type this all myself and often times forget to use spellcheck.!

  40. oldave Says:

Excellent news about Lowell. As a life long Sox fan it’s a pleasure to see management working hard to keep a winner in tact. Congrats to Mike and to you on your contract. Happy to have both of you back.

  41. redsox0717 Says:

YES!! It really shows Lowell’s character in that he can take a lower offer to play with a team he loves to play for. It seems 95% of the athletes in major sports today just go where the most money is, but two Red Sox alone in this offseason have stayed with the Sox when they could of made more or gotten a longer deal elsewhere, this is fantastic news.

  42. calafiore Says:

Class!!That was the first word that came to my mind regarding Mike Lowells

decision to stay with the Red Sox. I am really glad he made this decision. I would take him any day over A-rod and his MVP.

  43. bosoxfan4eva Says:

I’m glad to see that you both have decided to stay in Boston. I was worried when I heard that the Evil Empire was looking at Lowell. Thank God they didn’t sign him. Thank you both for staying in Boston =) Have a wonderful Holidays!!

  44. bobwal Says:

This is such great news. I really think that you guys have a legit chance to repeat next year. Lowell and Youkilis are so important to the infield because of their defense, it would have been a travesty for this team to let Lowell go.

Give the man credit for wanting to stay with this team because he could have gotten more on the open market. I think the team really dodged a bullet because it would have been a huge hole to fill next year.

It says a lot about the team as a whole considering that you two, David Ortiz and Josh Beckett took less money to stay here. With all the young players coming up, this team should compete for years to come, kind of the new version of what the Yankees were ten years ago. Of course, you guys don’t have a nut case for an owner like George Steinbrenner, so that helps!!

    Happy Thanksgiving

  45. game6sockwasfake Says:

hey man I agree with you & everybody else on the politics issue…

You let everybody here say whatever THEY want so why the $%#@! cant you say what YOU want (who runs this site again)… please… sox fans never fail to unimpress

A-Rod went for the loot & you didnt… that can certainly be said and you both took matters into your own hands (you before him obviously)

either way the yanks were the only ones who could pay him and he knew it… now that they are done overpaying for 2 guys who should never have become free agents in the first place

lets face it no one is starving at 8 million + or 27.5

(well except you that is -haha)

you obviously feel that boston is where you want to be… Will that help you get elected in New England..? I think an NL city in a red state is the path of least resistance for you both to the hall and to office but hey … time will tell.

As for lowell i think he made a wicked smaat move to stay in a place where he is loved, respected and where those 84 2B’s in the last 2 years are not o-u-t’s…

waiting for you to slam jeter on tax evasion

    happy holidays

  46. lainie25 Says:

I couldn’t be happier! I just about jumped out of my seat when I heard the news. A Happy Thanksgiving will be had by all of Red Sox Nation. :-)
Blessed Wishes to you and your family, Curt, the Lowell’s, and to the entire organization.

  47. yalefather Says:

Great to see that the key elements are back in place. It’s nice to see a team that exudes class not only during but after the season as well. From this fan’s perspective, class and character are what separates the Red Sox from the Yankees. What do you think will happen with Eric Gagne?

  48. redsox52 Says:

Leaving money on the table????? 37.5 for three years thats great! But C’mon Curt you guys play baseball for a living. 37.5 million is a crap load of money for a 33 year old in his descending prime…how about living on a teachers salary…

    Give me a break…

If someone offers you 45 million or more, and someone else offers you 37.5 million, and you take the latter offer, doesn’t simple math mean you are leaving money on the table? Your opinion of the act is irrelevant, he did it, and that’s a cool thing. I’d argue you’re complaining to the wrong person or set of people if you are upset about teachers salaries. Last I checked you had the right to vote and the right to run for offices that directly control that exact thing.

  49. top1tony Says:

Can you say repeat? I can. this news made my day. Thank god. Welcome back Mike.

  50. jimmykc Says:

Got to agree with #20 post, and I have now been a fan for 50+ years. It is sweet indeed. Let’s make it back to back!

  51. chillyme Says:

Hopefully, Mike Lowell will check out this site and SOAK IN the love. No regrets, Mike. We love you. We need you. We want you. Thanks for sticking with us.

    :)

  52. Di. Says:

Fantasy Football…ug. I have the worst luck ever in FF. I was playing against someone who had Brady. I knew it was going to be a close week. Then I saw McNabb was taken out in the first quarter. I got a whole -1 points from him. Not that the 1 point would have helped my cause. My teams either have an awesome week or totally horrible.

I had Brady as my QB last year……it’s only a friendly game of FF.

I’m so thrilled Mike is signed. It looks like a good deal for both sides. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mike gets a 4th year at the end of the 3 year deal.

    -Di.

  53. homeofthesuttons Says:

I’m glad Lowell’s back. We’re going to need him when when you’re pursuing that Cy Young vote and another trip to the WS.

As an aside, I found your 1989 DonRuss baseball card when you wore #43 with Baltimore. Nice half a mustache. Is that thing real.

  54. redsoxforever Says:

Oh what a time to be a Red Sox fan!

It is no longer an impossible earthshaking event when the Sox win a world series.

Now “Wait till next year” is no longer a pie in the sky dream of the Sox taking it all. It is the start of a process towards a repeat.

Curt’s signing and Mike Lowell’s expected signing is exciting and full of promise. Players want to play for this team.

It seems that the season is 12 months long for us. I love it!

  55. katie143 Says:

Wahooo! Life is great ain’t it!

  56. schillnixon Says:

“Sweet” is right, glad to have Mike back here for at least 3. Never met him, but if he’s half as classy as he seems, you can’t go wrong. I love guys who throws their heart into the game, I believe Mike does that. Thank you for not signing A-Wad. With the integrity of this team intact, I think we can now look for another playoff run in 08.

Now if the Pats can put some wins together, the off season won’t be so bad. But as my friend who is a Raider fan told me at the start of the year, Randy Moss is going to be a problem, he’ll explode. I think he did last night.

  57. papifan Says:

Yes!!! I know you will be happy having a great glove at third behind you. And now Youk gets to stay at first where he excelled this year. As a diehard Sox fan I am ecstatic that the front office resigned Mike as well as yourself. Really has been an incredible month. I have heard that the Sox are also interested in possibly signing Kerry Wood. Would be a great addition to the bullpen IMO. Looks like another great team has been assembled already for 2008.

  58. stanleykrute Says:

Phew !!! Two bullets dodged as regards the possibility of losing two great players from our Sox. Thanks Mike, thanks Curt, thanks Sox.

Next year’s gonna be fun !!!!!!!!!!

    – stan the fan from far away

  59. schillnixon Says:

    Fantasy Football beatings.

I wouldn’t know what that’s about I had a bad week and won by 57

  60. evans24 Says:

WOOOO-HOOOO!!!! MIKEY LOWELL is in the fold ,now we can sit back and watch another world series champion team next year!!!! Thanks Curt for coming back !! you and Mike are the best on and off the field.

  61. dmfordj Says:

Been checking several sites the last two weeks with hopes I’d read this news. Great to have Lowell back. I thought he was under-rated going back to when the Sox acquired him as a “throw in” on the Beckett trade. Good to see he has received the credit he deserves, and that he sees the value in staying put on a team that he enjoys playing for by passing on offers that may have been for more years/money.

Schill, maybe your example had some influence on him??? Hmmmmm…

  62. dpats Says:

I am so ecstatic that Mikey is back. I was equally as happy to have you back on the Sox for your final season!! There really is a Santa!!

What a great year and so far a great off season!!

Congrats to all the Red Sox for the fantastic year and look forward to 2008.

Now the Sox can just add Johan Santana to the starting pitching staff oh my the thought of that happening!!!

  63. schillnixon Says:

I love Yankee morons who post here, and I’ve been a member for 2 hours. Guess what, Red Sox fans don’t care about you. The Yanks are a joke and will continue to be. 16mil for Abreu? Gimme 5 Mil, at least I’m not scared of a wall. All you’re doing is proving that we’re in your head. Cause Red Sox fans are worried about teams that have players that can hit over .250 in the playoffs. But Hey, You guys made CC look respectable by losing to him. It was the only thing that made the Cy Young vote less of a joke than the refs in the Colts/Pats game. Maybe you’re a Jets fan if so…sorry, I’m guessing 106-3. Maybe you’re a Giants fan, then 83-10.

    Humble Pie, NY eats it!

  64. gregcousino Says:

Nice to see the Sox and their key free agents come together. These are great days indeed. Curt, you are honest, and straight shooting, sometimes even a little stubborn, are from Vermont?

  65. fanfromfalls Says:

I have been a proud member of Red Sox Nation since I was a child visiting my mother’s family in Lowell. I was a proud fan win or lose. But I have never been more proud than I am today. You guys are throwbacks to the days when players were loyal and honorable–and these days that can not be underated. I work with troubled kids who are often short on people they can respect–I now use my beloved Red Sox as that good example.

I do have one small complaint–how can the manager who led his team to first place and then held that position for the entire season in the most difficult division in baseball–only to achieve the never achieved (8 for 8 in World Series Play)–not even be on the list??????? Francona is the BEST MANAGER in either league.

  66. leftyjonesysummy Says:

    Hi Curt,

I’m so happy and over the moon that both Mike and you are staying in Boston. My only concern is that when you guys are announced on Opening Day in Boston next spring the thunderous applause could bring down the new construction!

Thank you for 2004 and 2007. My dad was a life long baseball and Red Sox fan who died in 2000 and unfortunately did not see any World Series wins by the RS. I take comfort knowing that you made a dead man happy…TWICE!!

  67. fenway21 Says:

Curt, will you consider running for office once you retire? You would be a great replacement for Kennedy in MA

  68. lwilliams05 Says:

Yes, how SWEET it is! Both Lowell and yourself have given me hope in the world of athletes. Integrity, loyalty, and class. Not too many people have those traits anymore. Come to think of it, most of the Red Sox organization have shown those traits! Maybe that’s why I will be a life-long fan!

    Let’s go for a repeat!!!!

  69. yanksrdaclassofbball Says:

    Hey Curt,

As a fan who lives and dies with the Yankees, I find myself in unfamiliar territory. The Mike Lowell signing makes me happy in a strange sort of way. Although I wouldn’t have minded him joining the Yankees, I think you guys need him more than we do. Not in terms of production, but in terms of class. Mr. Lowell represents something that hasn’t really been a Red Sox tradition: A GENTLEMAN that is an admirable adversary. People like Manny make your team look bad. He may swing a big bat, but he looks like a sterno bum an

  70. wsholar Says:

What do you think the chances are of a 3-way trade with the White Sox/Twins that nets the ChiSox Torii Hunter, the Twins Coco Crisp, and the BoSox Orlando Cabrera? How cool would that be? Lugo could decide whether he wants to get another ring as a utility infielder or be traded, and we have a lineup that looks something like this:

    1. Ellsbury

    2. Cabrera

    3. Ortiz

    4. Ramirez

    5. Lowell

    6. Drew

    7. Youkalis

    8. Varitek

    9. Pedroia

    My God.

  71. yanksrdaclassofbball Says:

continuing…(my son reached and hit the send button). As I was saying, Manny looks like a sterno bum and doesn’t act much better. But Mr. Lowell is definitely a great representative for your organization. That being said, Curt, I would like to know, what has made you hate the Yankees so much? I mean, you have been our nemesis since 2001 and have never really been on the losing side against us in the post season. If I’m not mistaken you have said in the past you would not play for the Yankees. Did a Yankee fan steal your bike when you were a kid :)? I’m just curious as to why you seem to be such a big Yankee hater. It’s obvious why the fans hate us, we’ve been dominating them for God knows how many years and they are finally getting back some respect. As much as I hate to admit it, it makes it interesting that we actually have some competition. But as I said before, enjoy your success fans, it won’t last forever. YANKS WILL BE BACK!! good night all.

  72. freddie152 Says:

    Curt,

Glad to see Mike has reached terms. Hopefully the dotted line is signed ASAP!!! Now lets see the FO sign Terry Francona to an extension!! Let us not forget how well he has sailed this ship since he has arrived here in the nation. He, IMHO is a huge peice of this puzzel and needs to be rewarded as such. He is such a class act and in my mind deserves so much more credit than he is given for the success of this franchise.

  73. drconlaw Says:

Our thanks to Mike Lowell. Now our entire family can enjoy their Thanksgiving dinner dreaming of next season. Reminds me of another Thanksgiving three years ago that was improved greatly by another player’s agreement to sign, and look where that decision took us all.

And, more money or not, living as we do in the Philly region, Mike made exactly the right decision in choosing to remain with the Red Sox Nation for the next three years, and hopefully longer.

  74. bruin537 Says:

Very sweet…… Only an ellite group of athletes would leave $M’s on the table to stay & play in Boston (championship city). It’s not always about money, sometimes it’s about the game. The team comes first!

  75. GremEQ Says:

Bradford’s going to be upset that you are crediting ESPN with announcing this story. ;) Haha

  76. arnibeth Says:

I couldn’t be happier, and neither can my daughter who owns a Mike Lowell shirt I had to find online at the Yawkey Way Store because no local store around here had his number last Spring.

What do you think the chances are that Mike and some of the other sox may show up in Foxboro on Sunday to show off the trophies (that being

the World Series of course).? I have been visiting redsox.com several times a day to check on Mike Lowell’s status. I only wait one more day when they tell that it is inked and a done deal for sure. Happy Turkey day Roni Marlborough MA.

  77. ted5 Says:

Wow! That is great news! Now my wife and half the middle aged ladies* in my town can relax. Their crush lives on!!! I was worried that A-fraud might be coming to Boston. I know he’s a great ballplayer but the guy is such a “poser.” He has no people skills and would be hard to take in any clubhouse. If he landed in Boston, I was thinking of joining Yankee Nation—not really.

    Have a great Thanksgiving!

    Ted

    * The young chicks dig him too!

  78. denisesoxfan Says:

OK - We have Schilling, we have Lowell. All together, now: WE WANT TIMLIN!

    Denise

  79. margalit Says:

This is such great news. I’ve been sick all week with the coughing crud, and when I saw on TV that Lowell had reached an agreement, I was so happy I had a mega coughing fit of joy. Next year is going to ROCK.

Red Sox Nation has so much to be thankful for this year. I hope we all remember that in our Thanksgiving prayers.

  80. FireDannyAinge Says:

Lowell is back because the Yankees didn’t want him. He would have dragged this on for months if the Red Sox didn’t give him a deadline.

  81. frodo1962 Says:

Excellent news, so it looks like the starting rotation is set, all position players signed … so the only tasks left would be to restock the bullpen, the 4th outfielder and second catcher. Nice position to be in coming off a championship season.

  82. redsoxfan89 Says:

    Hey Schill,

I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to hear the news about gettin Mikey back. I got back from school and was surfin’ and went to redsox.com to get an update and BOOM I see “Sox reportedly have a deal with Lowell.” I felt like screamin because I love Lowell. He is loved here in Boston and no one wanted to see him go anywhere else. He belongs here. It was kind of the same way I reacted when I heard about you resigning with the Sox. Great to have you both back!

    - Aashish

  83. justinatwell Says:

Great to see Mr. Lowell come back for another three years this, should set up for another great season in 2008 and years to come…thanks Curt for all that you do…keep up the good work

  84. gsolo516 Says:

    Curt,

It really is a great day for the Sox and us fans to have Mikey Lowell, such a great player and person, returning to the team next year. I shouted for joy when I heard the news….Fantastic !!

Also wanted to thank you for all that you have done for the Fenway Faithful since you joined the team. I only wish my Dad had lived to see 2004 and especially the sort of throw back “never quit” ethics that you personified out there on the hill when it counted most. You provided some really great role modeling for my kids,…thank you.

Thank you so much, and continued success next year. I will be rooting for you and will always be grateful to you for what you have done for the lifelong Red Sox fans of New England (I’ve been a fan since 1964 when I saw Tony C come up as a rookie right out of a North Shore High School.)

    Cheers,

    Gary Solomon - Intel Corp.

  85. brittanydix Says:

i signed up just to have the chance that shilling will read this!

im SO GLAD lowell is back!! i was so worried!!! AND WITH SHILLING!! i was sooo scared he wouldnt come back!

but they both did :) now i can sleep at night!!!

ehehehe red sox are the best. i skip school for them!

  86. dbflyer Says:

Where do I start. I’ve waited for this event before posting his comment. Congrats to the team for a job SUPERBLY done!!! AND thank you for your commitment to each other. I have to ask…….Where has loyalty to the team gone? Money and “just business” seems to win out over years gone by when players ears weren’t commanded by greed and agents who are immoral. I hope the ownership and management share the family philosophy. I understand when players do not perform after being given a chance that they are shown the door, but when a player is up for free agency and chooses to stay with his current team instead of choosing more money that you could spend in a lifetime, thats just “Wicked Awwwahsome”!!!!!!!! So thanks again and please pass our thanks to him and you Schill for doing the same. It shows commitment, integrity, and loyalty, not to mention good moral direction.

  87. soxfc Says:

    Curt,

Can you “talk to Mike”? :)
Ha! Kidding, but just wish there was a way to communicate to him what this means to us. I don’t know if you guys have any idea.

The Series, your decision to stay, and now Mikey - an embarassment of riches.

Thank you both for appreciating what the Sox mean to us. God Bless, from this skeptical agnostic.

  88. thedoctorx Says:

Hey Schillnixion, as much as I hate to admit it, there are a few classy MFY fans. Most live outside of New York . . . they pick up class. One is a friend I see at a bar. Happened to have my RS hat and saw a stranger with one as well. We both sat at the bar on either side of my friend who looked up–wearing his MFY hat–and yelled “What the @#$%? Is this the Red Sox mafia!!” He congratulated us on “our” ALCS comeback and “our” WS . . . though I am sure my screaming at the television and dancing helped the RS “over the hurdle.”

He also congratulated “us” on having Schill back for an incentive laden year and thought “we” would be insane not to sign Lowell.

WOOOO! HOOOO! on Lowell. If you read this, please let him know how your blog-fans feel about him LEAVING MONEY ON THE TABLE! Yes!! Absolutely he did!

  89. seanwh17 Says:

Another wonderful day to be a Red Sox fan. Just keeps getting better =)

  90. thedoctorx Says:

. . . forgot to add that some of the classy MFY fans post here, like yankee26.

    hey Curt,

  92. babs765 Says:

I am SO happy!!! Now the team is whole and as it should be. You and Mike Lowell are honorable men and we are lucky to have you!

  93. luckyleperachaun Says:

    hey Curt,

First time commenting. Just wanted to say that you have gave some great insight to the inner workings of some of the off the field issues that you go through. I thought it was great when you wrote about the way free agency works. Thanx for being a great person, and staying humble through all your accomplishments!!( What a swell time to be a sox fan huh?)LOL. Boy ‘86 and even ‘03 look like an eternity!! I wish YOU and YOUR FAMILY HEALTH and HAPPINESS for the holidays. take care.

  94. cckid68 Says:

I have been a RedSox fan since I was 4, the 2004 team won the final game of the series on my birthday, and this years series the day after my birthday, the biggest fear was the team getting torn apart like 2004, so to see everyone back for another run a the title is awesome. I may live on the west coast, but my heart has been in Boston since “72″.Keep up the good work and bring another title home in 2008. Hope fully I can catch a game against the mariners next year.

    GO Sox!!!!!!!!!

  95. tangysun Says:

    Hey Curt,

    Yay Mikey!

    It’s great news.

    Good Stuff…

  96. gymneye Says:

lol yea right…….its not about the money…that is such a crock of bull. its not only about the money but winning world series as well. I am so tired of hearing players say they want to retire here or there because they say this every time they win a world series. ……if players really want ot ake a statement how about taking a pay cut…..hmmmmm now thats saying something but you will never see it. most Fans are idiots and belong with the masses of this country, which are blinded by the matrix.

  97. Kat Says:

    Woo-hoo!

  98. frange23 Says:

    Curt,

Given this is probably your last season I was hoping you’d shed some light on a topic that my friends and I argue about all the time. When your called out to Cooperstown, who chooses the cap you’ll wear? And do you think you’d go in as a member of the Sox? No disrespect to Philly and Arizona, but we’d love to have you in there with the rest of our greats. For those who argue you’re not a shoe in, shame on them. What you have done in the playoffs and reaching 3000 K’s are remarkable achievements Curt. As a former collegiate player, not many understand the grind you go through preparing yourself physically and mentally, and the fact you’ve been doing it for 20 or so years. In my opinion a Hall worthy player must either be especially dominant in a 5 yr span (Pedro), achieve certain benchmarked milestones their predecessors did (3,000 K’s), or be a dominant big game, playoff player (Jeter, Pettite, Smoltz..etc). And most importantly, stay healthy long enough to do it (which I hope Papi does). You’ve done it all Curt. Although you certainly do not need my approval, You’ve done a little or a lot of all of these things. Go out like Elway and prove all doubters wrong because you’ve EARNED a spot there.

P.S. I like seeing my friends from NY suffer. Now they know how it felt all those years. So keep that up too.

  99. mrblutarski Says:

    SWEET!!!! Welcome back guys!!

I have to say that this whole process was pretty unnerving for RSN -it’s great to have you guys back!

While I know we’ve got some other free agents to tie down (Timlin, Mirabelli, etc) -there’s another “must have” free agent out there….

BRING BACK TROT!!! BRING BACK TROT!!!!

It was painful to watch that guy in an Indians uniform this year…

  100. deb19 Says:

so excited to hear mikey’s staying-it’s been stressful these last couple weeks waiting to hear what’s gonna happen! this team is special, that chemistry is hard to find, hold on to that core of guys if u can.. so much to be thankful for this year! happy thanksgiving to you and the family….

  101. yanksrdaclassofbball Says:

Another comment to all of the fans who post here: Stop all the A rod hating and remember how so desperately you guys wanted him when he was about to be traded for Manny back in 04. You could just see the looks on the fans faces. Alex was even going to REDUCE the value of his contract to play for you guys and the union said no. Your cheap owner killed that deal. So get real, you can’t blame A rod or the Yankees for that one. He may have issues, but he can still play, and play better than anyone in a Sawx uniform. You guys hate on Damon too, blame ol’ John Henry again, for not offerring up one more measly year for a player who was supposedly the backbone of your 04 “idiots”. The Sox have two major flaws as I see it, reluctance to show appreciation to their guys at contract time, and a quiet-but ever so present reluctance to sign African-American players….and if you think I’m talking out the side of my neck, go back 20 years or so. Theres been far too few African-Americans on the team. Amazing how as soon as Boston wins a few titles the fans stop crying about high payroll.. Worked for you guys huh? Grow up.

  102. ciao614 Says:

    How SWEET is truly is!

P.S. Who the F*&#! does Yankee26 think he is to correct you on your spelling?

    Who the heck cares??

Most people make typo’s anyways when they type.. at least you don’t have a stupid “New York” accent Curt and we love ya for that!!….lol

  103. own72 Says:

There is no better Christmas present! Santa live!!!!!!!!!!

Next year we have to repeat!

    Congrats Red Sox Nation!!!!!!

    LET’S GO RED SOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  104. bosoxdiehard Says:

You gotta love that Dirty Water … thank you Mike, thank you Curt. Now, how ’bout “Back To Back” titles?

  105. natefrancis Says:

    Gregcousino,

I thought it was illegal to vote for Republicans in Vermont. Not so sure Curt would be a great fit there ;D

Hell, I’m surprised he can stomach The People’s Republic of Massachussettes.

  106. countrygirl1962 Says:

Am happy to hear that the Red Sox worked it out with Mike, as he is one great ball player, so good for the Boston office for doing the right thing.

Also as Mike said himself he likes playing in Boston, and I don’t think there are any better most loyal fans then here in New England. Am also very happy that you Curt are also all set in staying in Boston for another year, nothing like retiring here in your town of fame.

Best of luck and have a great Holiday.

  107. thenoreaster Says:

    Dear Curt:

In thirteen months, I lost two uncles to meningities and cancer, my grandmother to time/age, my cousin to suicide, and also a very close, very dear friend to suicide. This new championship was a gift to me in ways you cannot possibly imagine.

Thank you so much for giving us your best!

  108. curtswift Says:

    Curt,

I’m thrilled to hear that you and Mike Lowell are staying put. Guys like you are the reason players want to come to Boston and play now. Although I think salaries are ridiculous, I agree that in our respective professions, we do the same thing. If we’re making 50K and someone offers us 100K, we’re gone. Same principle, I think we’re a little jealous at how much you guy’s get, but then we can’t do what you do either. So, for you and Mikey to take less money to stay with our beloved Sox endears you guys more and more to us “common folk”. I think that was a classy move from you both. It goes to prove to your fans that you are not Pay-Rod or Clemens and just selling your soul to the highest bidder. Bravo, for playing for reasons other than money! Best of luck to you all and bring us another one next year too!!

    ~Curt Swift

  109. jimredsox04 Says:

This has got to be one of the happiest times of my life. Honestly, to see one World Series in Boston was awesome, now two !! Thanks Curt !!! Words can’t explain how great it is to see the team happy and tight knit. It gave me the chills to see you holding that trophy up and waving with the other hand. I kept thinking, this really can’t be the last year for Schill and Mike. I prayed to the baseball gods, and they answered. Thanks for being the player you are and adjusting to the changes in your pitching style to remain dominant in the league. Whether you are 1,2,3 or wherever in the line-up you are #1 in the hearts of Boston fans. Go Schill !! Never look back. (only at the trophies !! )

  110. fredbumble Says:

    Hey Curt,

Regarding post 39 (Yankee26). Things in New York must have hit rock bottom when yankee fans find more happiness in misspelled words rather than their teams performance!

“the first thing my buddies and I do is run through it and see how many times you write something like “ectstatic.” It brings joy to my day!”

Thanks for everything you and your family have done for Red Sox Nation and for your comittment to your charitable endeavors!

  111. NoxintorT Says:

    YAY!!!!!!

Tell Lowell we love him :)

  112. rsoxwest Says:

Sweet! How cool that you & Mike are back! The Red Sox are truly the team to beat next year, but that won’t happen! What a huge relief to see the team stay together and not be busted apart, like the Marlins. If it aint broke, don’t fix it! Don’t mess with greatness!!

    Looking forward to next season!!!

Have a wonderful holiday season and off-season with the family!

Anxious to see you in July when you play the Mariners!

    Kris in Boise

  113. brucop Says:

Sweet is right!! Lets all give thanks to Mike Lowell (taking a pay cut to be true Red Sox Player) and the whole Boston Red Sox organization for making this happen! Red Sox nation you do understand that for years and years we all have been say wait till next year! Well next year could be a back to back world Champion season again!

    Happy Thanksgiving to All

  114. redsoxknitter Says:

Thank you, Mike! Like many Red Sox fans, I’ve liked you from the first week you played for us. Steady, professional, and at the same time rejoicing in the game, you have been so important to the clubhouse chemistry, as well as to the on field performance. I feel that your choice to return to us is a complex one, but at least, in part, involves your respect for your fans. Believe me, we appreciate it. All the best, and happy off-season.

  115. lostthefight Says:

Lowell is a cheap shot artist.
