By Curt Schilling

The Sox will issue an official announcement at some point today, but Theo said it was ok to post here so I am. We agreed to a 1 year contract late last night. Today was the MRI, which I passed.

Still trying to soak it all in.

The deal looks like this.

$8 million in guaranteed base salary

$2 million in bonuses for 6 seperate weigh ins.

I inserted the weigh in clause in the 2nd round of offers, counter offers. Given the mistakes I made last winter and into Spring Training I needed to show them I recognized that, and understood the importance of it. Being overweight and out of shape are two different things. I also was completely broad sided by the fact that your body doesn’t act/react the same way as you get older. Even after being told that for the first 39 years of my life. Now I can’t get on Dougie anymore, which sucks, and I am sure the clause will add 15-100 more jokes to Tito’s Schilling joke book.

$3 million in IP incentives based on IP totals.

$1 million for receiving a Cy Young vote, any vote.

Some miscellaneous things were agreed upon as addendums as well.

Any discussions about this will focus on many points, that will miss the point. Did I ‘leave’ money on the table, yes. Could I have gotten another year? I think so. In talking with my advisor Ed Hayes, assessing the market place and current free agent crop as well as existing contracts. Looking at the teams that called, my best guess would be around 14-15 million for a 1 year deal with the potential to get 25-30 for a two year deal. Shonda and I were very clear on this from the outset, we wanted no more than a year. We wanted to stay here. So while there will be points of debate, they’ll all miss the point. We got EXACTLY what we wanted, and then some. This is where we want our career to come to a close. This city, this team. This is where we want to retire, raise our kids, and walk away. We got it, all of it, and more. Did I get too little? Hell I would argue that one of the top 3 pitchers of all time just signed a 10 million dollar deal. Scott Boras could argue that one of his clients is certainly worth more than Maddux, I can’t. Actually he would be arguing that one of his clients is worth more than another of his clients right?

Bottom line is Mr Henry, Mr Werner, Mr Lucchino, Theo, Tito and John wanted me to come back, and I wanted to be back. So it’s all good. Saying it’s not ‘about the money” is a lie too. Both sides have a price, at some number I was not a viable option for the Red Sox, and at another number the Sox might have become a non-contender to us, but we both wanted this to happen and it did. Contrary to what some ‘insiders’ think they know, they don’t. Theo and I have an enormously respectful and friendly relationship and the same can be said for all three owners. As far as Tito goes, well I have too much dirt on him to ever worry about him selling out on me…..

I’d also like to say thank you to Ed Wade, Drayton McLane, Josh Byrnes, Bill Giles and the other GMs and owners I spoke with. The fans of St Louis were incredibly graceful and respectful in wanting me to come there. I didn’t get to truly experience the recruiting process of becoming a full fledged free agent, but I think that was for the better. It was also nice to talk with Ed again and know that we both harbor zero ill will about anything said or done over the last decade. The phans in Philly at the ALS tournament yesterday were also very respectful and considerate and it was nice to see that passion on display again. While I think many of those options would have provided a fun and exciting final season, in our heart of hearts Shonda and I knew that to go anywhere else would be leaving home, and I couldn’t bring myself to make that happen.

Theo and I spoke early in the week about wanting to complete this before the exclusive period ended, and the GM meetings began, because we both thought there could be a scenario popping up that might make this less desirable. He has to run this team, and I needed to do what was best and right for my family. Allowing external influences to change our opinions of each other might have been an unavoidable strain neither side wanted.

I’ve already heard from Josh and Wake, and am excited to know that my last year in the game will be with a team that has another legitimate chance to win the World Series. Also, the thought of being able to be teammates with this incredible group, for a final run is pretty damn cool.

For any media that’s looking for comments, I will be attending this event in Springfield this evening

Looking forward to seeing you all play damned good ball in 2008.

I’m also glad that you’re going to retire here and wear the Sox uniform when you’re inducted. As a community member, I’m glad you and Mrs. Schilling are sticking around – you are great role models.

    And, of course…SIGN LOWELL!

I am a big fan and hearing that you are going to be with the Sox for one more year is great news. I have always said that it takes a special ball player to play in this town, and Curt, I feel that you truly get what it means to play in Boston.

    Congratulations.

Now, *that* is great news for a cold, rainy fall day, Curt!

Congrats. I’m happy for you and your family, and I’m happy for the Nation, too. You deserve one more trip through the league with a Red Sox cap on your head.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I so vividly remember the day after Thanksgiving 2003, when I was headed into a Celtics game, news of your Red Sox deal broke, and some loud, happy fan yelled back into the crowd “WE GOT SCHIL-LING …!”

The applause, hoots and hollers were deafening. Thanksgiving, indeed.

And now we still got Schilling.

    Well, all right!

    best,

    Tom

  31. sirwreck Says:

  32. greekolives Says:

    Schill,

Great that you are back…Hopefully yoou and your teammates will continue the great tradition of the Red Sox…and yes…I agree, Sign Mike Lowell…..

  33. syphax Says:

What a happy ending (not quite, you still have to go win 20 games next year!). You did leave some money on the table, but it’s refreshing to see that this was not ALL about the money.

You are already in the top tier of Red Sox greats for making the Red Sox winners, both through your performances and your attitude. Choosing the team, the region, and your legacy over top dollar will just inch you up that much higher.

And I’ve found your blog posts during the brief postseason fascinating. I am of the opinion that you would be well served by filtering what you say a bit (that’s my gently way of saying you talk to much), but for every foot-in-mouth moment you also have provided a lot of insight to us fans about the game (and the business).

  34. sherbs58 Says:

Curt, I speak for all sox fans when I say, Congrads on the deal…You’ve been a huge factor to this team both on the field, how you’ve mentored younger players, and off the field in our community. It would have been a very depressing thought to see all that lost to any other city than ours…

  35. sirwreck Says:

House still on the market??? ;)

  36. mabalsaritchy Says:

Attaboy. Now Theo and the other parts need to get everyone back together to see how much fun a back to back run can be….

  37. socalsox Says:

Welcome back Schill! Now lets work on getting you in the Hall.. as a SOCK!

  38. warsaw44 Says:

Thanks Curt – very pleased you are coming back. Besides… you’d have missed us wicked smaht Boston sports fans if you’d left!

  39. icequeen100 Says:

    Glad you’re staying, Curt!

Have to add my thoughts with everyone else’s…RE-SIGN LOWELL!!!

    :D

  40. intruder1500 Says:

    Curt,

Pitching is what is important to us RS fans. Family has to be the number one item to you. Both have been reached and now we nedd Mike Lowel.

Even if you both do not have the year you had this season the leadership is worth every penny. Remember it’s not about the money!!

    It’s about the rings!!

  41. lughlamfhada Says:

    YESSSS!!!!

Curt, glad to hear that you will be staying in MA and finishing your illustrious career with the Red Sox. Now if we can only get you in the Senate once your baseball career is over. Maybe you could run against that booze-ridden murderer Kennedy?

Anyway, I’m just glad I don’t have to find a new favorite player on the Red Sox. Oh, and #6, don’t be pissy just because your beloved Yankees got their asses kicked.

    Congrats Curt!!!

    -Lugh

PS: Remember the PvPers in your game! We’re not all bad!

  42. conblognh Says:

This is AWESOME news, Curt! It’s good to know that you’re spending your last year in the league right where you belong…with all of us in Red Sox Nation.

I hope you and your family have a happy and healthy holiday season…

  43. frodo1962 Says:

Outstanding Curt, I can’t tell you how happy I was to hear this on the radio today. Congratulations to you and the organization .. next step sign Mike Lowell, after that 2008 World Series!

  44. ddonahue Says:

You never left, so I won’t say welcome back. I will say “Well done”. It’s nice to see a pro athlete do business with such class.

    O yeah…I agree….Re-sign Lowell!!!

  45. kmorin54 Says:

Congrats on the new contract! It’s pretty cool that you get to play your final year where you really wanted to play.

And I agree…resign Mike Lowell. Let’s go get another WS!

  46. resigncurt2008 Says:

Welcome Back Curt! Made my day!

    Oh and….Resign Lowell!!!

  47. reesiesworld Says:

WOW! A professional athlete who conducts himself in an ethical and professional manor and a team that respects him for it.

Congrats Curt and good job Red Sox.

People seem to forget that negotiation isn’t about one side winning and one side losing. It is about both sides getting what they need at a price they can live with.

Let’s hope with a repeat with Mike Lowell.

    All the best to you!

  48. nabowles Says:

Curt- When I was at Game 2 of the World Series, I was telling everyone that I’d probably seen your last game as a Red Sox. I thought the moment that you walked off the mound was one of the best sports moments I have had the chance to experience live. Needless to say, I’m more than thrilled to be wrong.

I appreciated your insights into the free agent process, especially the 2003 letter from the Sox, but what I admire more is your unwavering allegiance to your word, something that I’ve grown accustomed to in reading your blog this year. In March, you were candid about what it would take the deal to get done, and you have kept that, as well as what’s best for your family in mind the whole time. Luckily, it seems it was a win-win situation for the Sox and for the fans of Red Sox Nation as well.

I think that your impact on the 2008 team, even more than your individual win-loss record, will be the mentoring you can provide for Daisuke, Clay, Lester, etc. I think that it is great that pitching icons like you and Maddux can be such mentors for the games newest pitchers.

Congratulations for such a speedy contract resolution. Enjoy the holidays and the offseason with your family.

  49. oldschool72 Says:

    Curt-

So glad to hear that you will be back in 08′ to finish out what has been argueably a Hall of Fame career. The flood of emotions that I felt in 04″ have all resurfaced. All I can say is thank you from the bottom of my heart what you brought to our team and our city (and making my Grandfather eat crow- God rest his soul, lol, that the Sox would never win the big one- now it’s happened twice). The importance of your presence, along with the other veterans (Beckett, Wake, Timlin) to help along a young pitching staff that (has not only accomplished great things this year but) is destined for more great things upon the horizon.

Some wisdom you may already know: chill on the night eating, carrot and celery sticks are great, don’t eat out of boredom and even if you’re not motivated, get in your work out.

Thank you for the early Christmas present!

    Let’s sign Lowell!

  50. shinryu Says:

Curt, I might never be able to reiterate this enough – thank you. It’s great to see there are still great athletes who will take a reasonable pay cut in order to keep playing for the love of the team.

  51. kinggabey Says:

That’s great news! I’m psyched that you’ll be closing your career in Boston.

I still remember the commercial you had about going to Boston to break an 86 year old curse. How prophetic!

I’ll never forget your playoff heroics. Boston fans have a lot to thank you for!

  52. nesnmaine Says:

    Curt,

You have earned it. I remember when the Red Sox signed you in 2004. It was like having John Wayne arriving . I was happy with one World Series but you helped us win two. I’m not ashamed t admit that I had tears in my eyes when I watched you walk off the mound this year for what I thought was the last time. I’m 44 years old. But men can cry. I have met some of my idols but I have never met you. I hope sometime I can. I want my children to see what a true hero looks like. God has blessed you and your message is heard in this family.

    Thank You.

  53. bostonbrian18 Says:

Congratualtions Curt, here’s to another excellent season with the greatest baseball team in the world. Cheers mate.

  54. barbinla Says:

Mazel Tov! Looking forward to another year.

  55. jtredsox5 Says:

Good to have you back, Schill! Let’s sign Mikey Lowell and head to Fort Myers (after all you guys get a little break, of course)! Personally, I am very excited for next season–let’s get it on!!

  56. theotherm Says:

Great news for all of us! Congratulations!

  57. thethrillws Says:

    Curt,

It’s great to have you back in a Red Sox uniform. It must be nice to have your career come full circle. You and the rest of the organization have done a lot for this region of the country with giving us fans two World Series victories in the last 4 seasons. Thank you for not being all about the money, I’m sure you probably could have received more guaranteed money from another club, but you kept to your word and said you wanted to retire with the Sox. Congrats on the new contract and the World Series win and good luck for next season!

  58. mloc Says:

Schill, I’m in tears reading this.

Lifelong Sox fan…saw Yaz, Tony C and Pudge play here.

In my opinion, a guy who went to the lengths that you did in 2004 to help win us our first Chamionship in 86 years, deserves to retire as a Red Sox. In addition, fans like myself

who love this team unconditionally, deserve the honor of helping you celebrate when you finally hang up your cleats.

Congrats to you and your family and to all of Red Sox Nation.

    AND YES!!!! Resign Lowell!!!!

  59. jonbrodo20 Says:

congrats i fyou want to play next year call the phillies

  60. nesnmaine Says:

  61. mattsmithsox4life Says:

    Mr. Schilling,

It is not only a pleasure but an honor to see you back on board with the Red Sox for your final season. It is great to see an athlete who has had such a strong career as yours still in the game for the pure enjoyment of playing and the spirit of competition. I believe that is why you are staying in the game in Boston!

I look forward to seeing you in action again next season, in pursuit of a third championship in 5 years.

Best of health and happiness in the holiday season to you, Shonda, and the family!

Thank you for coming back! God Bless!

    Matt Smith

  62. theophilus73 Says:

    Red Sox Nation rejoices!

I’m wondering, how much money over the years do you think you have saved or lost by working without an agent? I regard that as a tremendous accomplishment. Of course it’s hard to put a dollar value on the three championships, about which most agents wouldn’t give a hoot.

  63. soxgirl7 Says:

  64. mferrera Says:

    Curt:

Thanks for being consistently being a man and athlete of honor and integrity. The Red Sox have been part of my life since my first breath (I had no choice!! but am happy for it) and you have helped to make this a classy organization that is set up for success for years to come. I’m so glad you’re back with us. We’ll all have fun watching your final season and be able to celebrate with you as you retire. Now, that’s a great story. So, on to win again! Welcome back! And teach those young ones, they have great potential.

  65. xycosox Says:

Glad to have the Big Schill back on the hill next year!!!! Congrats!

    Xyco

  66. jaybinnh Says:

    Curt,

Congratulations from NH! This signing goes beyond baseballs and bats. Having you adopt New England as your home is great and your affiliation with ALS will contiinue to provide attention and money for the cure. GO SOX………back to back in 2008. And as far as Mike Lowell goes………Theo, you just saved a ton of dough on Curt…….give it to Mike.

  67. hammatime Says:

This is great news Curt! A classic American straight shooter all the way. The Kids will have a great role model for another year! To change your pitching style mid year and come out of it dominant in the post season is amazing. Great Job and thanks for everything you have done for Redsox nation.

    Need another ring though ;)

  68. nickymat Says:

You are annoying! Thank God you are not coming to Philly!

  69. jbbrennx Says:

Thank you, Curt. You are a man of your word, and it will be an awesome upcoming year!!

  70. viktordva Says:

    Curt,

Any campaigning, public or private, you are able to do to get Lowell back and keep ARod away will be much appreciated.

I like the looks of the Sox rotation next year as I am sure you do, as well.

  71. soxfan1979 Says:

    Curt,

I have to say I am extremely happy you are staying with us. We had the pleasure of meeting you in Florida right before your 1st spring training with the Sox when you signed an autograph for my daughter outside of the complex. From that moment on I knew Boston had something special and we look forward to having you finish your career here. Let’s make it #3 during your time here.

  72. soxfangermany Says:

This is the best news today curt! You are a first class guy(your comments on SoSH are well known) and i wish you are a RED Sox till your career end . My dreams come true. Thank you and Theo for this deal!!

  73. glaciatedtoo Says:

Schilling, Congratulations! Pitching depth wins championships and I think that you are part of that puzzle. I hope that you can stay in shape so that you will be effective all season. Do your side bends and sit ups and teach Buchholz, Lester, Dice K, Masterson, and Bard how to pitch and pay attention to details.

  74. hutch1510 Says:

    Curt

Just wanted to say welcome back, your a huge part of this team, this town, and ofcourse redsox nation, keep up the good work and bring us home another world series win!

    resign Lowell!

  75. klemmy77 Says:

I’m overjoyed to hear that you are coming back next year, to be honest I really couldn’t see you in any other uniform but boston. I think to say that it is refreshing to see an athlete stick to his guns on where he wants to be is an under statement. Over the course of the past 4 years you have become a core member and a much loved person for all your work with ALS. I tip my cap to you and your family for everything. All the best to you and your family. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    - Come on Theo re-sign Lowell ( I am on the edge of my seat waiting as about a million other people are ).

  76. knucklechildren Says:

    Outstanding!! Very good news!!

It is so frickin nice to see players and teams just do what they all know is the right thing to do. Very classy on your part!!

Like you said… Bringing back Mike Lowell will be huge, hope that happens as well.

Its gonna be another great season… and I’m still enjoying the last. Thanks to you and the whole team!!

    Cant wait for spring training…

  77. johninmaine Says:

Well Curt good luck to you. This 39 year old still plays lots of ice hockey and baseball albeit not as efficiently as when I was 29 but hey …. it is about the sport when all is said and done.

Play as long as you can and have fun, as a fan I will enjoy watching. And yes keeping the extra weight off is difficult at our age but doable.

  78. mustbf8 Says:

    Curt,

Although I am a life-long Padres fan, I’m also a big Curt Schilling fan. My dog is named Gwynn, but if I ever get another he might have to be named Schill. Anyway, I’m glad to hear that your back in Boston for your final year! I have loved your commitment to community and especially your work with ALS. I wanted to take the time to say “Thank You” for your continued work with ALS. Being someone with a form of Muscular Dystrophy, I love to hear about people of influence such as yourself, committing so much to a cause. Your efforts go a long way, not just monetarily speaking, but emotionally for people like myself who root for you each and every start because of what you stand for. Thank you for doing your part to fight ALS and your efforts go a lot farther than you may know. You give me and thousands of others with neuromuscular diseases hope that maybe someday there will be a cure for ALS and the 39 other forms of neuromuscular diseases. Good Luck in ‘08 and I’ll be in your corner for every start.

    Craig

  79. megawookie Says:

    Awesome! See you next year!

  80. natefrancis Says:

    Man. Great news.

A fan never wants to follow up a great season for his favorite team by seeing his favorite players booted out the door (or chasing someone else’s money out of it, for that matter). For all the happiness the World Series Championship brought to us this season, watching you leave would have been a bitter draught.

You’ve been a credit to your team, your fans and this region ever since you put on the uniform. You’ve played no small part in bringing two championship trophies to Boston after many years of failure. I’ll be proud to see you step onto that Fenway mound one more season, regardless of next year’s outcome.

Thanks to you, your family and the Red Sox management and ownership for getting this done for the team and its fans. It means a lot to all of us.

  81. pk812 Says:

    Curt,

This is great news. Now take your house off the market, nothings moving anyway. LOL. Now of course I have to bring my son to another one of your starts next year. Hope we can see #38 raised in right field eventually. You deserve it.

    Good luck next year.

  82. big1234 Says:

Great to hear The Red Sox did the right thing and are bringing You back to take Your final Bow. Now win one more and Your probably heading to The Hall Of Fame!!!! Congrates Curt

Just want to say I’m impressed and thanks for continuing to walk the walk. Just one more bad MFer left to sign for 2008.

  84. baxie102 Says:

    Curt…

Thanks for getting this done. You’ve been a big part of the Sox over the last few years. It’ll be great to have finish your career in Boston. You are going to finish here, right? Right? Curt?

  85. gjhopwood Says:

    Curt,

So excited to have you back!

I was traveling during the World Series and watched you throw 82 gutsy pitches over a live internet feed from Bethlehem! Truly one of my top ten fan moments as a lifetime Bostonian.

I respect your pursuit of excellence each time you pitch, your dedication to your teammates, your love of technology, your commitment to “gaming” with your kids while on the road, and your devotion to the Lord Jesus.

I also admire how you approach the business side of baseball. I am weary of the culture of spin fed by the media, sport agents, and so many others. Your candor with the fans is refreshing.

Here’s to the best year yet in 2008!

  86. jrrusso Says:

congrads curt, you have been nothing but good luck here. i wanted you to know that my dad donated his car to curt’s pitch the als charity. i specifically picked that out of about 10 charities. i hope you end up not moving and staying here at least seasonally. good luck in repeating!

by the way all champs deserve a chance to defend there title!

  87. dougb38 Says:

Welcome back!! Kudos to Theo and the Gang as well as Curt and the Family for making this happen. It just seems right. Now, sign

    Dear Mr. Schilling:

Not only am I very pleased that you will end your career as a member of the Red Sox, I am equally pleased that you don’t have to uproot your family because it really looked like your children did not want to move away in the recent Globe article. Take the house off the market, and hit the gym!

Now, in full agreement with all of the other postings, let’s hope Theo, et al can get it done for Mike Lowell.

Theo, if you are reading this……DON’T SIGN A-ROD!

Do you think that Mrs. Schilling would consider putting the t-shirts she had made (that all the wives wore at the rally)for up for sale for the Shade Foundation? They were awesome.

With best wishes to you and your family for a happy and healthy off season,

  92. drshaws Says:

I’m very impressed Schill. So rarely do we see it just come together in today’s sports/business world, that this is just impressive (and a couple of cheers to the Sox front office for getting this done, too).

    Beckett

    Schilling

    Dice-K

    Wake

    Lester/Bucholz (platoon for arm strength)

That’s just phenomenal. Glad you’re back!

PS – Don’t know how much of the weigh-in incentives (and the drive to meet them) you want to make public, but I think that you could make a great online tracker and pair it with a charity version where people stick to your same in-season timetable, but with their own personal goals (people can sponsor them for meeting or exceeding their goals). I see the marketing guys drooling over the Red Sox Nation version of the Biggest Loser. ;)

  93. NoxintorT Says:

As I’ve said before – we truly appreciate your enthusiasm of finishing your career in Boston. It means a ton to us.

  94. shaunalbanyny Says:

Welcome back! As a Massachusetts native, (born and raised, now in NY) It gives me great pleasure knowing the core of the staff will be back.

What are your thoughts about the remaining Sox FA’s? Id like to see Hinske & Kielty back. I know Clement is gone and pretty sure about Gagne too. Im 90% sure Dougie will be back to catch Wake, depending on his role.

Now if I can only get you to autograph this ball…

  95. dasponge Says:

Being a 40-something man in roughly the same shape as you….it would be great if you posted on the blog your workout regimen and how you will be getting in shape.

I am forever trying to get in shape and seem to only get in shape when challenged by my friends and we all make non monetary or charity based wagers…

Even more intriguing would be to post a challenge maybe “Schilling’s Shape Up Challenge” where you would challenge other 40 something men to get in shape. It would be fun for all and might help things go smoother for you and for all who rise to the occassion.

Maybe proceeds to to your charities with the “winner” and their spouse and family having lunch or dinner or picnic or whatever with you and your family…say maybe at Spring Training….

    Just a thought….

    Thanks for a great season….

  98. esaslaw Says:

Great news for one and all. Maybe we could have done without the goodbye letters to teammates and the newspaper articles explaining that, sigh, moving on is just ne of those things in the life of a ballplayer, but in the end, you and the Club demonstrated that you both meant what you said.

You (and your teammates, and the front office—including, to some degree, the last GM on the Yawkey/Harrington era)) have done so much to establish this team not simply as world champions, but as the best in baseball. Many times in the almost 50 years I have been religiously glued to this team I have felt we had a great team, but only this group—beginning the year you came over—has proven it, and the importance of your contributions can never be forgotten.

But there is something about retiring in a Red Sox uniform that adds to that, I think. It is something Roger Clemens will not have, nor Pedro Martinez, who both did so much for this team. Even Jim Lonborg, whose win over the Twins on the last day of the 1967 season led inexorably to your two championships in the same uniform, did not get to retire as a member of this team.

Yaz, Ted Williams (and John Havlicek, Bill Russell in another Boston uniform) had that honor and now you will, too. And in 2014, when we celebrate the tenth year of the first championship in more than a lifetime, you will be remembered for what you gave to the team that drafted you and to which you returned to seal the deal.

Congratulations to you and your family. I cannot wait for the season to begin again as you and the rest of the team try to do it yet again.

  99. robwhite2003 Says:

Oh, before I forget, RESIGN LOWELL!!!

  100. mes1155 Says:

It’s nice to see the Red Sox do something that not only makes sense for the team, but is a great thing for the fans. Congratulations Mr. Schilling. If anyone deserves it, you do. Thanks for being willing to negotiate with the Sox in the first place.

It is also noteworthy that you are one of Baseball’s true statesman. I wonder how many people are aware of the fact that you are one of the few who will still sign baseballs for kids.

My best to you and your family and thanks for wanting to stay a part of Red Sox Nation!!

    God Bless.

  101. bostonredsoxfan4ever Says:

Curt and family, this is really great news for you and your family and for the Red Sox Nation!

We were all pulling for you and now it is great to hear that you will be with the Boston Red Sox in the 2008 season and retire as a Boston Red Sox.

We thank you for what you have done on and off the field and for what you have brought to the Red Sox organization. I wish that there were more athletes like yourself through-out all sports. You are one of the great but rare ones and we are happy and blessed to have you in Boston.

Now that this is behind you, you can get some much needed relaxation time. We wish you the best of luck in 2008 and we are looking forward to seeing you when they say; “Play Ball!”.

Thank you for being honest about the money but NOT making it the ONLY thing. Congrats and maybe this year we can get tickets to see you in person. Congrats to you and the team and thanks for an amazing season and the promise of a great future.

I’ve come to realize that Boston’s outdoor sports teams share phenomenal business operating principles. Both the Red Sox and the Patriots find players who are as good off the field as they are on it. On that score, the Schilling family has been a fabulous addition to Boston’s sports history. Congratulations to you for making Boston your final home, and to the entire Schilling family for all that you do and all that you represent.

  112. mkidd76 Says:

Congrats Curt. I’m can foresee you putting up a 17-9 record, 3.82 ERA, and 201 innings in FY 08 and being in good position to earn $13-15 million in FY 09. Will they give you an extra million if you come to camp looking like Gabe Kapler?

What’s your feeling regarding the Hall of Fame? I would think you’re postseason numbers this year eliminate any doubt. If they are considering guys like Craig Biggio candidates for the HOF, than you should be a lock. There’s no comparison on who was more dominate or had a greater influence on the game during their career.

This is great news! Congrats to you, your family, and to Red Sox Nation. I hope it bodes well for Mike Lowell!

People wonder why the Sox have been doing so much better than the Yankees these past few years. I think in large part it’s because the Red Sox organization from top to bottom has a heart and a soul- and allows all of you to be individuals. No amount of money can buy that.

Thank you for your contributions in ‘04 and ‘07, the bloody sock, and for choosing to close out your career here so that we can tip our hats back to you.

p.s. How do I go about getting myself one of those weight clauses? I run 5 miles every other day for nothing. I’m such a schmuck!

I will be forever grateful to you for the 2004 championship and you will always remain in my heart. I am not ashamed to admit that I sat on my bed and cried like a baby at the conclusion of the final game. I, along with many other Sox fans, was afraid that I would go to my grave without seeing my beloved Sox attain a World Series Championship. NOW I HAVE SEEN TWO….CAN YOU BELIEVE IT! I look forward to 2008 with great anticipation. Thanks again Curt! Annacolora (first time blogger!)

Fantastic. When you become an adult fan, it’s difficult to maintain that excitement for the game that you had when you were a naive kid, especially when loyalty often seems to be only a trait of the fan. This is a refreshing change of pace displayed by both ownership and player. Thanks.

  133. exsubmariner Says:

  135. Ernie Says:

Awesome. This is great news. Now get to work on those six-pack washerboard style abs. Ha ;)

  136. gippymon67 Says:

I’ve always had a love/hate for you Curt, but I am very happy you will retire a Red Sox and hopefully go into the hall of fame as one. Not many players have embraced being a Red Sox the way you did and it made me so happy that you seemed to love and appreciate my beloved franchise as much as I and my fellow fans do. I just wish you hadn’t chosen to stump for Bush right after the 2004 win. You had to realize that a large portion of Sox fans would would be hurt and confused by your tainting our defining moment by aggressively supporting such a polarizing figure. I returned the Schilling jersey that I bought after the series, because of what you did. But you’ve done a great job here and I hope you continue to live your faith and not just use it as a smoke screen, like some presidents do.

  137. moxnix Says:

    Curt,

Don’t let posts by goldenduke get to you. Every need has an ego to feed. And he’s reaching for a conspiracy theory to fill his. The strikezone for both you and Carmona was consistently the same.

Question: After you complete your 2008 season in Boston, and given that you publicly mentioned not wanting to move your children away from their schools and friends right yet, have you considered going into coaching or front office work in the Sox org? Pawtucket to begin with? In other words, do you see your post-player years still involved with an MLB team, or in broadcast commentating such as Gwynn, or in developing youth organizations such as Ripken?

  138. argentina10 Says:

Im glad you get to stay.

This being said, its so !@$$!#$ stupid when guys like you or even Varitek make the “Re-Sign Lowell” sentiment public, so openly. Your job is to pitch, Theo and co. will get sure we field the best team possible so they know what they have to and they dont need to tolerate this kind of attitude. They know what Lowell represents to the team and they will surely offer him a contract accordingly.

    Thats all.

  139. thegreyeagle44 Says:

Nuff Said McGreevy would be proud! Now lets just hope Theo is smart enough not to sign A-Fraud and bring Mikey Lowell back for the long haul and the repeat next year. Great players like you are why Sox Nation is as strong as ever. The new dynasty is upon us and there is nothing the Yanks or any team can do about it. BoSox all the Way!!

    Tris Speaker

  140. scott01746 Says:

Great news for the Red Sox fans, when you win the Cy Young, pennant, and another World Series next year could you follow it up by running for the Senate? Bye Bye Teddy

  141. allens65 Says:

This is fantastic! I had complete faith in the Sox that this would get done. We will re-sign Lowell, too. The evil empire will make a run at him, and drive up the cost, but I think the Nation’s leaders know how vital he is to this team. I know Schill can’t answer this right now, but I wonder, did the Sox give him any re-assurances about their commitment to Lowell to help entice Schill to stay?

Don’t care to see Mirabelli go anywhere either. Remember, Wake looked a little lost in ‘06 when Mirabelli was gone the first two months of the year.

  142. kanyoufly Says:

I can’t wait for the Yanks to shell you! FUN TIMES INDEED!

  143. stelyo Says:

Many congratulations to everyone involved in making this happen. It’s a win-win for all.

Curt you continue to inspire us all and set a shining example to the nation.

I echo everyones sentiments re: Mike Lowell – Theo if you are reading, get it done!

  144. bostonsueb Says:

This is beyond awesome, Curt! I feel another World Series coming on… :)

Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts all season long and for being so forthright about the negotiations. Not many ballplayers would be brave enough to share this sort of information, but you’re special on the field and in your personal life. Congratulations to you, Shonda, your family, and to the Sox, of course!

Is there ANY WAY we can get MIKEY LOWELL back? I would be heartbroken if the MVP of the World Series (and probably of the 07 team) went elsewhere. Please use your pull, Curt (we know you have some :) ) and do what you can.

And once again, congratulations! It’s wonderful to have you stay here, so you can retire as a Red Sox!!! :)

  145. mannix8 Says:

Congratulations Curt! VERY glad you made this decision. I think it shows incredible maturity and wisdom to make a decision that actually makes you happy. Hopefully this sets you up for your eventual post-baseball playing life too. GREAT job.

Of course it would be interesting to get a better idea about what could have happened at the GM meetings to make this decision less desirable. Your comment is so vague it is possible to imagine almost anything. This could range from another player signing a contract that would put these negotiations in a different light, to another team making a larger offer to you, to members of the press (for example CHB — who is really a disgrace, btw) conducting a negative campaign, to a negative annoucement coming out about you (such as HGH — I would find that hard to believe), to A Rod saying he didn’t want to sign with the Sox because he is not a fan of yours (if so, a big thanks to you from Red Sox nation). It seems from your comment, that you and Theo had a specific scenario in mind — was wondering if you could shed light on your concerns.

Regardless, Congratulations. My family and I are really happy you will be playing with the Red Sox for the rest of your career.

  146. chaya23 Says:

Curt: I have to say I love you. Thank you for not being a schmuck like other free agents can be and for wearing your heart on your sleeve about Boston. I am so glad Theo didn’t take a stance about signing a pitcher over 40. You have meant so much to this team and your role over the last few years and next year goes beyond pitching. You’re taking on the Roger Clemens style role of mentoring all those guys in the clubhouse (case in point your chat with Dice-K). I would have been sad if I’d already heard your last D&C morning call in. You are great!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  147. darklighter Says:

Absolutely ecstatic you’re coming back Curt! You’re my all time favorite Sox pitcher (used to be that weasel Clemens before you came to town but when he RE-signed with the Yanks that was it for me).

Great news! Your decision is a clear message to any of your teammates who hope to continue to play on a team that is so meaningful to New England, the rest of the world and to history. For the moment, rest easy, then do what you can to practice restraint through the Holiday season!

  153. ilovebigpapi Says:

Great news. I am a few years younger than you and I definitely understand about the weight, but I don’t get paid millions to play baseball, unfortunately -) But of course that doesn’t make it any easier to take weight off and to keep it off after a certain age, and it doesn’t make someone superhuman. How does Tim Wakefield stay in such great shape? Maybe he could help :D He’s just such a classy man too, what he said about it being Jon Lester’s time to shine in the WS impressed me so much.

I just wanted to add that I would hate to see you go into politics (as some people are suggesting here), nooooo. I am of a different political mindset than you are in many areas, but that has nothing to do with my opinion. It’s such a negative, cutthroat business-and how much does it ever really manage to accomplish? Your talents are with your charitable work, in my humble opinion. I wish you would stay with that and with 38 Studios.

I can’t wait until Spring Training! Have a good time off with your family, and happy birthday. Goes without saying but I want Mike Lowell back too.

  154. soxmass Says:

Congrats to you Curt and to all of Red Sox Nation, we are lucky to have you.

I’ve already circled August 2013 on my planner…

    Place: Cooperstown, New York

Reason: To see all-time Red Sox great Curt Schilling enshrined in the Hall.

Wouldn’t miss it for the world.

  155. forloveofthesox Says:

Curt, you’re a class act, welcome back. Regardless of how this year pans out I’m grateful that you made concessions so you could end your career here.

  156. toofarawayfromboston Says:

“Shonda and I were very clear on this from the outset, we wanted no more than a year. We wanted to stay here. So while there will be points of debate, they’ll all miss the point. We got EXACTLY what we wanted, and then some. This is where we want our career to come to a close. This city, this team. This is where we want to retire, raise our kids, and walk away. We got it, all of it, and more.”

    That simply made me smile.

  157. dukefrukem Says:

Retiring in a Sox uniform is how it should be, Schill…you’re the best. I’m off to the gym too…you hang in there and Rock the House next year like you’ve done many times in the past! Red Sox Nation is smiling big time right now!!

Thanks for a great season, battling tough in the post season and really delivering a super, super performance for us.

I think even Shaunessy is starting to like you….

I’d love to see Lowell back, hope that the fact you resigned will give him another reason to stay. The Yankees are a sinking ship, I almost feel sorry for them.

    Hi Curt,Shonda, & Family,

I would like to echo the same sentiments as all in Red Sox nation, “Congrats”. We are all relieved that everything worked

out for the best. Also, thanks for all you and Shonda have done

off the field as well. Our great city is a much better place to live in

with you in it. I appreciate your passion for the game and the bond

you have not only for the players and management but for us the

fans. Winning in 2004, the bloody sock, will forever be etched in all

of our minds as one of the most courageous “warrior” like performances

of all time on a baseball diamond. Thank you for 2007, twice in a life time!!!

Your post season record rivals anyone that has ever played the game.

That spells “MONEY” pitcher to me. Let’s all thank John Henry down to

Theo for getting it done! Winning championships never get easier but

Red Sox nation feels a whole lot better about it as of today.

  171. bostonchamps Says:

    Curt,

Glad to see that you worked it out.

Now that we got that out of the way, lets get back to business. I’ve been saying all year that your extra weight was a problem for you. You are NOT the miracle that is David Wells! It is encouraging to read that you recognize this, too. So, I’ll be looking at how far out your gut pushes your shirt in spring training.

Welcome to your 40’s. Its a losing battle but one worth fighting to slow down the decay.

  172. bdoonan1 Says:

    Curt,

Congratulations ! Once again , you have shown yourself to be a man of your word. I am absolutely thrilled to have you finish your career in Boston and fully expect you to wear the Red Sox cap into the Hall of Fame. You and Mike Lowell will be integral parts of our back to back Series winning team in 2008.

  182. ndjay1987 Says:

    Congrats Curt!

We are very happy for you & your family. It is refreshing to have an athlete nowadays to speak his mind.

I only hope that when history looks back at your career, it will say that he was one of the best pitchers the Boston Red Sox ever had. Also, he kept his promise and brought Red Sox Nation a World Series trophy or Two or Three?

    Good Luck

SIGN MIKE LOWELL for the 4 years if that is what is takes. He is worth it. He has the right stuff for Boston. If the Yankees get him, then it will be a bigger hit that an extra year. He was great in the Five hole this year.

    Go Sox

    Welcome Home!!!

  184. brianintampafl Says:

Glad your back, Sign Lowell and bring Orlando Cabrera back.

Can’t wait to see you at the Trop again

  185. mattytars Says:

    Curt,

I want to commend you on your leadership and straight-forwardness in your dealings with the Red Sox. Many players would look to get the most money and years out of whatever team is willing to pay the most and guarantee the most years. Players like Pedro Martinez and Roger Clemens (pitchers that are your contemporaries and who I feel you will someday join in Cooperstown) have always chased the buck and pretend its about respect and not about the money. We all know that is bologna and its ONLY about the money with them. Funny thing is, they never respected their teams and previous ownership back. The media always seems to say that you are a guy who always seeks the headlines and want to “make a splash”. The ironic thing is that they say all this crazy s**t so that they can make the headlines in their media outlet on your behalf and thus “make the splash”.

The facts are that you realize you are financially strong and seem to enjoy playing baseball, you take your families feelings and opinions strongly in your decision making and act accordingly to what is best for your family. Not many players, check that….not many PEOPLE consider these things when dealing with their choices in life. I also highly respect your dealings with your friends. In the case of Mike Lowell. Mike seems to be the (pardon the expression) “The Quieter Version of Schilling”. He is a leader and a clubhouse presence who goes out and leads by example much like yourself. Nice to see people actually sticking up for their friends rather than quietly sitting back and letting things just happen.

Finally, you might think this odd, but I sit back and think about some of the roadblocks I face in life in dealing with my finances, family life, and personal security and always ask myself “I wonder what Schill would do in this situation?” Have I weighed both sides and considered all the people’s opinions that are involved in a particular issue. What will the consiquences be towards my family and peers if I choose this path as opposed to the other? Does everyone involved realize that what I say is truly what I mean? Sometimes I think I might be the only one who thinks this way….you prove that I am not the only one.

I wish you the best in 2008 for you and your family and all that you do. You truly are the definition of what a Champion is and should strive to be! Stay healthy and keep doing what you do! I have a funny suspicion that you will be playing for another World Series in 2008.

    -Matt

  186. ridetheseal Says:

Awesome news. Congrats, Curt. You absolutely had/have to retire a Red Sox.

  187. notorious9 Says:

Welcome back to Title Town! Now you’ll get to be one of us and enjoy the Rolling Rallies for the Pats and Celts!

    Re-Sign Lowell!

How do you feel about A-rod at SS and Lowell at 3b? No disrespect to your teammate, Lugo, but I would only ask this question to a person who may actually give an honest answer. But, I’d understand if you pass on it, too.

    Glad you’re back.

  188. barbara2212 Says:

    Curt,

If you were not with us next year, I would have believed that the Boston Red Sox management /ownership team was nothing but a group of money-making, profit driven, bottom line fanatics without heart or soul.

Putting aside your God given and self improving talent, not mentioning your intensity and passion for the game, and ignoring the blood on your sock that washed away an 86 year curse, I could have NEVER watched a Red Sox game again with the same fervor, excitement, and love if you didn’t finsh out your baseball career here in Boston.

I know you had better offers but I want to believe your spirit, like mine, is with Boston and its fans that love you.

  189. monstahuntawife Says:

Great to have you back, Curt.

Listen, I’ll lay off the ice cream, if you lay off the doughnuts. Next spring training, we will both be where

our weight is supposed to be. I will then fit into my new jeans and World Series T-shirt, and you will be $2million dollars richer for it.

Do we have a deal? Its always easier when you have a diet buddy… thanks for the ride, man! ;-)

Congtrats Curt! Great to have you back on the team for another year.

Boston would be less without you and your wife’s charity work. We all live whether the Sox win or lose, granted we live happier since 04 and 07 but seriously, what you and your teamates charity work is a blessing for this city.

    And YES! Sign Mike Lowell!!!!

  191. tom33t Says:

    Curt you are the man!

Two words for you – Classy guy!

Now we need them to re-sign Lowell!!!

  192. ikondave Says:

That’s great news! You are one of those rare few who have joined the Sox later in their careers, but nonetheless have become part of the Boston family. Honestly, this comes as a very pleasant surprise.

Like many others, I appreciate you putting in a good word about resigning Mike Lowell. He turned out to be one of the best trade acquisitions in Red Sox history. My Red Sox memory goes back to Ted Williams last year with the team, and I fully believe that your performances in 2004 and then again when it was do or die time this year, where as gutsy as anything else I have seen.

I’m also happy that your family gets to stay put and enjoy life in a wonderful part of the world.

Enjoy your off season. I hope to get a chance to see you and the rest of the guys in the pre season in Florida.

Best news a Sox fan in the middle of the country can ask for!! And you put your family first, not money and all the greed that comes with that. Your integrity and love of the game is what will put you in the Hall; along with the great things you’ve done in Philly, Arizona, and now Beantown!! Hope to see you pitch during the swings through either Dallas or Kansas City next year. Congratulations on a done deal; a contract that you and your family can be proud of. A man of integrity in sports…such a rare thing these days ~ I’m glad you’re on my team.

God Bless you, Shonda & the kids!

    You’re amazing !..

There’s just one thing.. you should have told them you’d only come back if they’d bring Lowell back too..

    Theo, RE-SIGN LOWELL!

P.s. This 2008 Red Sox team is looking pretty damn good.

  199. behrle Says:

We love you, Curt. See you next year!

  200. captnelson Says:

Well Curt, you’re back for the final year of an incredible baseball pitching career:

There aren’t many people that recognize what they want to do and what is important to them, and then do it regardless of outside influence or opinion.

I’m glad to see you made the right decision for you. You are one of many of the “new breed” of Americans that take what they knowingly recognize is less than fair market dollar value in order to exercise their right at achieving acceptable levels of income blending other life values.

It is in my view another sign of your respectable charecter, and will contribute to your legacy. It is your contributions as a man of charecter that happens to play baseball that I will forever refer to when recanting events and teaching my children and grandchildren about baseball.

Well done in managing all of the issues affecting your difficult decisions.

I couldn’t be more thrilled to see you again next year.

  201. sark47 Says:

This is great news and what I thought was fair. Congrats for working it out so quickly. It will give other players a reason to follow suit

Can you get your arm strength up in the off season so you can throw consistently at 91-94 MPH ??

I noticed in your one hitter you were throwing that hard in the 9th inning. I also predicted you may get injured shortly thereafter. (Clay got injured too)

I think running competively puts similiar stress on the body as pitching does and because of this, I have lots of ideas of how to improve pitching performance.

The post season pitching performances were great because pitchers were rested properly. Tito had the foresight to plan properly. Why not apply the same ideas in mid season. We will have 6 starters and Julian Tavarez.

    Jamie Sarkisian

  202. michaelmlu Says:

Curt, your bloody sock image had been in hearts of all of us with RedSox Nation, you are, always, our hero. Who else in base ball or any sports had achieved, or have chance ever to achieve this great influnce, success, and forever admirations and respect. Your bravery made many grown men, and the whole nation tears.

You made the right decision again to stay with the Nation. Your family will be always repected here, and loved, Curt.

  203. barryc Says:

Congratulations Curt! I think fans this year will want to show you how much we appreciate how much you already done. I believe both your family and the Red Sox are blessed toget this deal done. Thanks from a long time Red Sox fan!

  204. mrmako Says:

    Curt,

Good on you for getting this done, with reasonable accommodations. You and Wakefield are are really personifying what is good about baseball. Those that say you should have gotten more money elsewhere do not get the point. I got it.

Now, go have a meeting with Mr. Epstien, Lucchino, Henry, and Werner, and talk to them about bringing Mike Lowell back. The last time this happened (similar, although not the same), we lost Cabrera (does he kill us every time we see him or what), and classy Bill Meuller (he did have bad knees, but a stand up guy). At least with Mikey, we don’t have to worry about off-field distractions that are of his own doing, and EVERYONE says hes a good person (and a hell of a 3rd baseman).

Glad you’re here Curt, and you will be in that group of Boston Heroes (Bird, Bourque, Orr, and yes, Brady)……

  206. danielee Says:

I am very happy that you will be returning to the Red Sox. Matsuzaka got 15 wins this year with 4.40 ERA. My realistic prediction for your future:

3.6 ERA, 180 IP, 16 wins in the regular season. 2 more postseason wins to bring you winning percentage up to 86.7% and the fourth championship ring. HOF in 2015 (assuming Maddux and Glavine will make it hard for you in 2014). Rest assured, all of Red Sox Nation and its machine will be behind you to get you into HOF. Congratulation for the 2008 season with the Red Sox!

  207. rsn7 Says:

    Schill, U R the $!@#$!best, dude!!!

Thank U for join us for a year!!!

    SIGN MIKE LOWELL!!!!!!!!!!

    GOOOO SOX!!!!

  208. adamsj Says:

    Curt,

Great to hear! Congratulations to you and the family. I’m sure it feels good to know you will be here for the long term, and can continue to build on the great foundation you have laid over the past few years here.

Regarding Lowell, I say Crisp gets dealt, and Ellsbury a starter (very insightful, I know). Hopefully that leaves the funds to have some reasonable CF backup support in the dugout or on the PawSox, and give Lowell the deal he needs to stay. I said it on a prior post – this is offense and defense for the Sox, and keeping him off the Yankees, making them pay dearly for A-Rod or find a ‘2nd tier’ replacement as compared to Lowell/A-Rod, is precisely what we want! With pitching set for a while, this is a reasonable scenario now.

I guess Lowell always could head to NY and have a tough transition like Damon, but I’m not willing to count on that, nor would I wish that on such a great player.

    John

  209. newmancomm Says:

Quite a classy contract that shows both the team’s commitment and your accountability. The fact that you did it so quick shows that when the middle man is eliminated good people can come together and look at what’s best for both sides. You are a Red Sox through and through. From the day you were drafted to the day you will retire.

More importantly, your commitment to non-profit causes is a wonderful example to the industry, the team, your fans, the community and other players at how critical it is for all of us to give back.

Have a great night in Springfield. My 82 year old mother is a huge fan of yours and lives in that area. She will have a smile on her face. She never thought she would see one World Series. Now she has two and your commitment to shoot for a third is a gift to all of Red sox Nation.

The only problem with mom is she will only wear the Lowell shirt. He has her heart.

    Good Bless!

  211. signcurtandlowell Says:

    Hey Curt.

What a feeling. Knowing this early in the offseason we already don’t need to worry about the possible loss of a Boston icon. Thanks Curt, for realizing there is nowhere else in the Majors quite like Beantown. Haha. I like the incentives you added yourself. 6 weigh-ins? I like the way you put pressure on yourself. Its a very desirable trait.

Well thanks a million Curt for coming back to the Fens, and we hope to see not only another great year, but another World Series run.

P.S. We all hope you end up earning that 14 mil….

    Great News!!!!!!

  213. edouble12 Says:

Just wanted to post to say we are glad to have you back! It is wonderful to see a player mean it when he says it is not all about the money, and having you and Farrell around our young pitchers is going to make a huge impact on the organization for years to come…

My wife and I have be lucky enough to see your first start in the playoffs in both the 2004 and 2007 runs (we live in OC now), and we look forward to the chance to do the same in 2008. Now I gotta go order my Shilling shirt so in a few years I can tell my soon-to-come son/daughter that not all athletes are in it for the money, and a few franchises are actually worth making sacrifices for…

  214. umpire27 Says:

Curt, count me as one of the countless members of Red Sox Nation (attended my first game Yaz’s rookie year, 1961, and saw Maris hit one of his 61 as the Evil Empire prevailed over our beloved Sox; so you can appreciate where I’m coming from here) who is extremely pleased to have you back to finish your impressive career as a Red Sox. After 2004, you’ve had a life long pass from this appreciatve member of The Nation. You owe us nothing, and we owe you a permanent debt of gratitude for your contributions in ending our pain & suffering. Whatever you had decided to do was ok with me; but I’m really pleased to see a professional athlete who can make an honest and realistc assessment of his situation and act accordingly. Good for you!

Now let me end by being the umpteenth fan to say to Theo & the Red Sox brass… Screw A – Rod!!! Sign Mr. Lowell!!! I prefer a team and World Series MVP to a regular season MVP who’s never won anything!!!

  215. mere9 Says:

This is great news. I’m truly grateful for all you have done for the Red Sox, for the loyalty you’ve shown to the team and to the fans and for your professionalism. You certainly have my good wishes and my respect, but you’ll never get my vote for political office. (-:

I, too, hope the Red Sox re-sign Mike Lowell and that they make no attempt to bring in A-Rod.

    Congratulations Curt!

I’ve been a Sox fan since ‘67, the year my father brought me to the pennant clincher, and the Game 2 one-hitter against the Cards.

In the past forty years, I have seen many highs and lows. But the past four years have been most enjoyable. The Red Sox winning two out of four World Championships is great, and you are a major ingredient to their success. It would be great to see you win a third in five years, and see you retire a champion.

One more ingredient MUST be added:

    SIGN MIKE LOWELL!!!!!

  218. djvasco Says:

Congrats Curt. I have to admit I was hoping they would sign you because I do not have confidence that Matzusaka is a # 2 – at least yet. I would give him 1 more year to prove that he is a #2. I don’t know what this does to Bucholtz that we signed Wakefield as well. Anyway, this is my first blog. Thanks Curt for 2 World Series! You have made my life in NJ so much easier.

  219. knotty66 Says:

Thanks for coming back. $8 million is worth every penny knowing your approach and experience will be helping Lester and Bucholtz (sp).

I watch a lot of games but I never miss one of your starts. I like to see the 41 year old use smarts to win.

One more run, pull out all the stops, come in light, prep the shoulder, get good sleep, shave the head……who knows you might still have the gas.

    Prediction

    15-7

    3.83

3-0 in the post season with a save!

  223. colleentara Says:

    Curt,

After a long season, hardly never missing a game, I go through a period of Red Sox withdrawl after the season is over, and then dread the changes that are yet to come. Today, the Red Sox is heading in the right direction by signing you again. Thank you for an excellent year and I can’t wait until next year. Your the best. God bless you and your family

  224. peterccpa Says:

Congratulations Curt, and I hope you can breathe a sigh of relief, relax for a few months, and enter the offseason with a clear head. I suppose you may be toning up a bit over the winter..if so, how much easier it will be knowing you’ll be reuniting with your great teammates.

Thank you for the candid disclosure of your contractual arrangements and the thought processes you and Shonda brought to this difficult decision. It’s so refreshing to hear that the money isn’t the only consideration in any business decision; I think the fact that you’re staying here may reward you many times over in future years; whether in product endorsements; local honors; etc. and it’s great that the team is equally interested in keeping franchise players that will shape the history of the Red Sox organization for years to come.

    Have a great winter.

  225. The One-Handed Clapper Says:

That’s fantastic news! Congratulations to you and the Sox!

    Please resign Mike Lowell!!!!!

  226. robb4sox Says:

Congrats Curt! You are such a important part of this team and I’m glad your staying! Go sox 08 baby

  227. tmurph13 Says:

Congrats Curt. I hope my wife doesn’t see this or she might put in a weigh in clause for me!

All the best in your off-season to you and yours.

  228. soxaholic94 Says:

Congrats, Curt! So glad you’ll be back for another year!! Glad you have $8 million guaranteed, and I’m crossing my fingers that you get all $14 million. :) And I agree, RESIGN LOWELL!!!

  229. beaverjc Says:

    Great news Shill,

I would love to know what are you gonna buy the local Boston Baseball Writers for Christmas….you know a “little incentive” for the local Boston writers to not forget to give you a vote for 2008 Cy Young Award!

  230. rapidtrent Says:

    This is great news Curt!

Glad to see that Red Sox Management didn’t repeat what in my humble opinion were mistakes with not resigning some of the key pitchers after the 2004 World Championship Team. Which leads me to a joke to make my point; How do you make the playoffs in the American League? Start with a World Champion Team and over play the money ball thing with free agents of dubious repertoire.

Best wishes to you and your family Curt and I’d be remiss if I didn’t salute your openess about your feelings on resigning in Boston as well as providing us a peek at the negotiation process.

For those of you wondering what uniform Curt will wear for his induction to the HOF, I believe its determined by which team the player spends the most time in the majors with, and in Curt’s case that would be the Phillys by a considerable margin. Hope I’m wrong as I’d like see him with the Sox. At any rate Curt’s induction would be remiss if there wasn’t a prominent display of his historic pitching appearances in the 2004 post season, bloody Sox and all!!!!

  231. sophiaaaa Says:

Congrats! I’m so glad that you got signed for another year. Red Sox nation is definetly very happy! I’m looking forward to another great year!

    SIGN MIKE LOWELL!!!

  232. jaxholliday Says:

Hey Curt…It’s great to have you back man…lots of people thought it wouldn’t happen, but RSN should have kept the faith. I really hope you reach all your incentives and make that sweet 14 million, but even if you don’t, it’s still been my treat to watch you over the years. You’re the epitome of excellence both on and off the field. RSN nation wouldn’t be what it is today without you at the helm. I can’t wait to see how some of the younger pitchers due under your tutelage. Thanks for another great moment in Red Sox history man. And by all means, YES! SIGN MIKEY LOWELL!!!

    Jackson

  233. mpsoxg Says:

I find myself at work in tears knowing that you will be back in 08. I have followed your career and have been an honest to god fan of you. The feeling of butterflies enters my stomach when you release a pitch. You seem to amaze me every time you play. I am a huge Red Sox fan but over all i am a huge baseball fan. I live in Arizona and I was blessed with you here with the Diamondbacks. As a Red Sox fan you made my life even better by moving to Boston. I enjoy talking baseball with father. He talks about the past and the magic of the game. He values baseball for the sport and what it has brought to our family. When the name Curt is brought up at our house you are under the talks of the greatest. Thank you Curt for being this humble and amazing man, and over all an amazing Baseball player who pitches! What you have done in your career will have me talking to my children and great grandchildren to come. I hope to make to Fenway when you Pitch next season and i hope to meet you. You are amazing i can not say it enough and I am so thankful you allow to watch you “play ball”.

  234. cubs0110 Says:

Curt, I am VERY disappointed in you. So much for the “Curse Killer” nickname.

Ok, back to not liking you.

  235. chpbenson Says:

Congratulations. Just several days ago on NESN Bob Ryan and Dan Shaughnessy were smug, certain and derisive about your chances of coming back to The Red Sox. I think they actually said “don’t let the door hit you on the way out”, and also that you had “alienated both Theo and Lucchino”, a rare two-fer.

Do you attribute this to this blog, and your efforts to control more of your public image?

  236. robertbaron Says:

Curt-I love your heart, hate your politics. But let no one disagree on this one central point: you walk the walk. Your integrity is beyond reproach. In the context of the today’s sports world, it is almost miraculous. Please re-name your web-site “Family Values”, becuase your decsion today was the best for your family, and the family of Red Sox Nation. Way to Man up.

    With respect and graditude,

    RBenson

  237. demianj13 Says:

    Kurt:

I am VERY GLAD to have you back for another season!!! I hope that is the FIRST of a nice series (Wake, Tavarez, yourself) to be signed, and PLEASE SIGN MIKE LOWELL!!! As far as I am concerned, we got the BEST Year out of a “freebie” signing in the history of the REDSOX!!! I think they got a free year practically salary-wise, so I hope they get the check book out. I have never enjoyed a season of ball more than this year for the SOX!!!

    Until April-have a wonderful one

  238. jasonrizzo Says:

    Curt,

I am ecstatic to hear the news of your return. It is only proper for you as a legend in Boston, to end your career in Boston, where it started. You are the perfect man to complete our raotation and help out all of our young arms. With your knowledge and insight you will help our pitching staff not only for this year but for years to come. I am also glad that the front office realizes how important you are and brought you back. RESIGN MIKE LOWELL

  239. mainesbeau Says:

Curt, as capricious as the free agent world is and the veracity of all the would be free agents, agents, it is absolutley awesome to see you negotiate without a Boras or someone else. It is always my pleasure to read your blog. Today is a reason for the RED SOX nation to truly be celebrating. I am convinced this is not just a year filled with ” last time ovatons” but a year full of big games pitched. That is why you re-signed here. You are still very competitive. You are now a leader. Sure when younger you made some mistakes, mostly rubbing some the wrong way that in truth probably needed to be, but you are one of a kind. A Hall of Famer, who’s number will indeed be on the right fireld wall someday and more importantly, a legacy will be left for all of the work you and your wife have done and continue to do. In many lives of the less fortunate you are the MVP of all time. Thank you for coming back, I know there were many other teams willing to give you 25-30 million for two years, no doubt. Following your heart is not a bad thing. Give it your best, meet the weight clause and remember to live , love and leave a legacy…you are doing just that. You made my day!!! Respectfully Beau

  240. demodoggie Says:

Congratulations! I’m so very happy about this news. You’ve earned the right to finish a wonderful career in Boston. You’re a lionheart!

  241. tetreault32 Says:

Yeah Schil great to see you back for your final year….we didnt want you going anywhere. SIGN MIKE LOWELL!!! Is right, although I think Coco is departing real soon.

  242. jedee02 Says:

Praise be to God that you were able to work things out to stay here. Our prayers were answered and we are glad that you really wanted to stay here for the remainder of your career.

Now we are praying for Mikey Lowell to re-sign here too!

Have a wonderful off season with your family.

    Peace,

  243. kris7738 Says:

    Curt,

I am so excited that you’ll be with the Sox next year. You are a class act and the best thing that has happened to the Sox. A lot of good things have happened since you’ve arrived and will continue to happen.

Thanks again for being here and wanting so badly to stay here. I can’t wait for next season. You’re the best!

  244. crfolz Says:

Congratulations to you and your family, Curt. Here’s to ending your Hall of Fame career in Boston!

Nice to have you with the Sox for one more year Curt. Though I have to admit I am somewhat torn as I’d like to see more progress made at Green Monster games :-p

  246. 1993phillies Says:

Jesus, Curt. You gave Arizona a title, and handed Boston two titles on a silver plate.

Thanks for forgetting about us in Philly. Maybe you’ll mention us “Philly phans” in your Hall of Fame speech. Excuse me as I throw away the autograph hat you gave me when I was 7.

Have fun winning in Boston, fatso.

  247. cptpatsfan Says:

  251. redsoxfan4eva Says:

Congrats to you and your family, Curt!! You are a class act, and exactly the kind of role model we need for the youth of today. We’ll be watching in 2008 and hoping for yet another World Series title for Red Sox Nation. Enjoy your off-season – it’ll be great to see #38 on the mound once again in the spring. Thanks for all you and Shonda do…keep up the awesome work!!

Hey Curt, you have my vote for Cy Young.

Hope that got you another million bucks haha.

I’m sure I speak for all of Red Sox Nation when I say that I am extremely glad to have you back for one more season. When the series came to an end, I was really hoping that we’d get a chance to get you back for another one.

Good luck next year, and have a great off-season!

  254. nicaraguan Says:

Congratulations Curt, and Thank you so much. sincerely I didn’t want that leaves Red Sox. Now We hope that you have a great season next year.

Excuse my english, I’m from Nicaragua, and as we say here: “A socar Caballo el año proximo”

  255. meow1 Says:

    This is great news, Curt.

  256. stouts Says:

So glad to have you back Curt, and glad you guys got it worked out quickly. It just wouldn’t be right if you didn’t finish your career in Boston!

I know you say it isn’t about the money, but I am happy to see that at least some players are willing to take a pay cut to stay and play the game in a town and with a team that they love. Bronson did it prior to the ‘06 season and I’m still mad that Theo traded him away just a month or two later… I’m sure he had his reasons, but I was so overjoyed at seeing a player who truly was in it for the love of the game, the team, the city, and the fans… not for the money. I’ve always respected you as a player and as a person, thank you for allowing me to continue to hold that opinion of you.

Now, off to the gym with you… gotta make sure you stay in shape and maybe even get that velocity up a couple of mph (so I read somewhere).

And starting working on Theo to make sure we resign Mike Lowell!!! It be great if you could give us any inside updates on that which you may have.

    God Bless

    Will

  257. jerrymatt Says:

Great to have you back. I have been a Sox fan since 1967, in a family full of Yankee fans, and I can say that you have helped to ease a lifetime of pain! Please tell Theo to pass on Rodriguez. I realize he is one of the top players in the game and while I will continue to rout for the Sox but I will never rout for Alex Rodriguez. Jerry

  258. jam5860 Says:

Thanks for sticking around. With the returning members of this team, next year the Sox will still be a force to deal with!!

    Ditto on signing Mike Lowell!!

  259. redsoxfan89 Says:

    Hey Schill,

Great to have you back! Honestly I was thrilled when I heard the news that you were resigning with the Sox. I couldn’t be happier. With another World Series win, I think it is safe to say that making the post season has become routine for this club, and it would be a shame if you were not on it so Congrats! Looking forward to next year.

  260. frenchkid54 Says:

    Curt,

It is so refreshing to see an athlete that has so much passion and love not just for the game but also his family. For what you did this post season, it is only right that the Red Sox give you another contract. It will be a privlege to see you pitch your final season in Red Sox Nation!!!

Let’s gear up for another chance at a World Series in 2008.

    GL

PS….See you in the Hall !!

  261. gpmboston Says:

Good to see that neither age nor money is a barrier to making the right decision.

Opting for incentives is a classy move. But I already knew that you had class from the caring attention I have seen from you to those with ALS.

So I wish you an your family health and happiness in our great city and at least one more spectacular year in a Red Sox uniform.

  262. bjmartin1 Says:

    Curt,

This is a great day for Red Sox Nation. Loyal players are rare these days. I’m thrilled you will retire with the Red Sox. Thanks for all you have done. I think my 90 year old father was jumping up and down like a kid when I told him!!

RESIGN LOWELL!!! Make sure Theo know how the nation feels!!!

    A-Rod SUX!!

  263. metz123 Says:

Wow…you’re going to be in my hometown tonight. I’m sure you’ll bump into a lot of folks from Friendly’s and Spalding. If I didn’t live 3000 miles away now I’d stop by…Maybe you’ll meet my folks. They’re members of Wilbraham CC.

Enjoy Wilbraham….you’d fit in perfectly there if you decide to retire to the “nicer” part of the state.

Congrats on the deal and hopefully you use the weight clauses as incentive during the off season to shift your diet and exercise habits toward a more healthy body shape. Guys who gather weight around the middle live shorter lives than those that don’t.

  264. frubino2682 Says:

Welcome Back Curt!! Im pumped for next year’s season, even though this one just ended! Definitely think we need to resign Mike Lowell. Im glad the options got picked up on Wake and Tavares as well. Alot of ppl underestimate Tavares, but he made alot of quality starts when Lester was finishing up rehab. I think that was very key and he’ll round out the bullpen nicely next year. Anyways, GO SOX!!

  265. pc88 Says:

Schill – Thanks for keeping alive the flame of loyalty in sports. Your love for the Boston area, the fans, the ballpark and your teammates is truly refreshing. Like all of Red Sox Nation, I’m grateful for the 2 championships you have brought us and for your mature, selfless attitude. Now I have a great reason to give my new, 4 mo old grandaughter Penelope June for her family’s devotion to the Olde Towne Team!

p.s. Can you have a heart-to-heart with Mike Lowell, who seems like another real, intelligent gentleman?

  266. 8ecca Says:

    Nice to have you back!

We were hoping that wasn’t the last of you.

Can you use your clout to get Theo to re-sign Mike? :)

  267. hookturner Says:

Congrats Kurt!! It is amazing to hear straight talk from a pro athlete regarding the decision making process for a contract. Thanks for the honest insight.

I am a 48 year old former gym rat I know the struggle to stay in shape after 40. Working out used to be almost a religion, now it’s a chore. I find the hard part to be mental. I have to force myself to get to the gym.

I have to be honest though. A 2 million dollar incentive would have me sprinting to the gym (and it’s 10 miles away). Just kiddin’!

You’re an honest and sincere athlete and person. I saw true humble as you left to mound as the fans cheered in your WS appearance.

    thanks

  268. goitaly Says:

Fantastic news. Looking forward to seeing you back at Fenway come April.

  269. tunderko Says:

    Curt

Long time Phillies fan, Schilling fan….wishing you were back here to help us get over the hump…

wish you all the best, you and your family. You’re a great baseball man and will always be remembered here.

    Terry from Pennsburg

    not your average Philadelphia fan

  270. 1ann Says:

    Mr. Schilling,

It’s an honor to have you back in uniform. Now that you’re part of the 40+ crowd, maintaining ones’ weight is as simple as this, You can eat anything, just not a lot of anything. It takes discipline to pass up food but in the words of Cindy Crawfords’ mother, “It takes as much work to look good as it does to look bad.” True and to the point. Moderation is the key. Another dirty culprit is sugar, once you lay off this substance you’ll feel amazing and realize how nasty sugar is to your system.

Now have that adivsor of yours go out and get some additional moola for you by doing a commercial for Dunkin Donuts. Just don’t eat those friggin’ donuts, those things are fat pills, instead drink some of their coffee and say “This is wicked pissah coffee.” There are plenty of local establishments that could handsomely pad your wallet like Legal Seafoods or the Boston Beer Company. Praise Legals’ ‘chowda’ or take a drive ova to a packie to pick up some Sam Adams ‘beah’. After fours years in Bawstin, the accent must be growing on you and the family:)

    Welcome HOME!

    Ann

  271. mary1212 Says:

tell me God isnt listening!!! Cant wait for the spring! Enjoy the time off and take care of yourself.

  272. mban Says:

Curt, I know it’s been said a million times, but I am thrilled to have you back. You have done so much for this team, and made my twenty-four year odyssey as a Red Sox Fan worthwhile. It is obvious that you are a passionate athlete, and more importantly, loyal to our team. It’s refreshing these days to see an athlete that you admire making choices based on the game itself and not money.

You could have gone anywhere and gotten a lot of money to do so, but you like our team.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing all of you win another ring!

  273. drewster60 Says:

    Curt,

    Congrats!

As a season ticket holder and as a longtime red sox fan, it is so nice to see that you will be back for another season. In a time when society has devalued the concept of loyalty, it is nice to see that you and ownership both agreed to make this happen. Could they have gone another route and saved a few bucks…sure. And could you have gotten more money some place else….absolutely. But when both parties are willing to say there are some things more important than money…that we have a great thing going here, and we want you to share in it and be a part of it, then that should be enough to get a deal done. I am glad it did. It makes me proud to be a fan of you and this team.

And I am so glad you, Shonda and the kids will be sticking around even after you retire. Promise me that some day you will bring your kids back (and grand kids) and show them where their dad or grandpa played some of his finest baseball. And be sure to point up into the rightfield rafters and show them your number retired. I know I will be doing that and recalling some of those great moments… and how I got to see Curt Shilling play for the Red Sox and bring home the trophy!

Thank you for all you do for this community!

  274. thedoctorx Says:

And a big [CENSORED--Ed.] to various trolls in the past two years who have tried to blast you HERE for “da sock,” for “having an ego,” “being old,” or whatever jealousy crybaby excuse they have to feel good about themselves posting crap on a sport-star’s blog.

I share the sentiments that, after you DO retire, stay with the organization in some capacity. Nothing will irritate jerks more than you accepting your fourth RS WS ring as a member of the organization in the opening of 2010. . . .

Hey, have to keep up with Brady.

    –J.D.

    P.S. Oh, and sign Lowell!

  275. hamcraft Says:

    YESSSSSSSSS!

    YEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!

Thanks Curt, I’m so happy for you!

  276. redsox9 Says:

Curt, i haven’t posted here much but i do “lurk” here often and try and read much of what you blog. First and foremost i want to THANK YOU for delivering us to the “promised land” in both 2004 & 2007. i know that winning championships as a player must be the ultimate joy, but in all honesty i can’t imagine feeling better than i did when you and the boyz won it in 2004. You were a HUGE part (obviously) of winning that WS and for that i will always feel pride for you. You stepped up again during this most recent WS run and it was fun seeing you popping champagne like a kid.

That being said, i am very happy for you and your family that you get to finish your career on your terms and where you want to. i think you’ve earned the right to do that. but as we know baseball is big business so it’s nice to see that it happened this way for you.

As for “leaving money on the table” – I see it this way – you didn’t “whore” yourself out to the highest bidder like some other pitchers have (see: clemens). You made a choice for you and your family that wasn’t based solely on $$$. And you know what? – that also makes me proud to see you step on the field in a RS uniform for one more go at it.

PS – i know players don’t get to “choose” anymore what hat they were in the HOF, but i think you should go in with a Red Sox hat….

PPS – you may actually have to be nice to a writer to get that 1 Cy Young vote this coming year! ;)

  278. abjackson Says:

Schill, thrilled that you are coming back. You’re a gamer that is always wanted and needed in Boston. Defend that Title…..2 in 4 years is great but 3 in 5 years is outstanding. You and Shonda do great things for the community and that doesn’t go unnoticed.

I was so Happy to see you will be retireing in a Red Sox uni I came to see the victory parade in 04 all the way from las vegas on the red eye the night before . I landed and made my way downtown to see the man we brought in to bring us to glory finally . For you to make that happen was I cant put into word’s but now having two in 4yrs I just wana say your the man curt you ever need anything in vegas you look me up . I’m very happy to have you back. Your a stand up guy Curt. You really put your money where your mouth is, which is rare in athletes in this day and age. I look forward to another year of you pitching for the Red Sox, and getting alot of K’s for ALS.

  287. dianesfastball Says:

For what it’s worth to you or anyone else who reads this….

I love the Red Sox and I cried this morning when I heard there was a chance you were coming back.

    Thank you

  288. misterasdf Says:

Hey curty-boy how come no ringing Bush endorsement at the victory parade this year? I thought that was a WS tradition. Don’t be a coward just b/c you told everyone to vote for the anti-christ. He is still saving you a ton of taxes on the new deal, perhaps you are craven but to be ungrateful is even worse.

  289. ksm1616 Says:

    Curt,

It is so great to hear your coming back, and to take less money then you could have received in the open market should show everyone how much you care about this organization. It’s too bad there are not more players that show that kind of loyalty to their team and fans.

Since 2004 I’ve said I don’t care if Shill goes 0-20, what he did in 2004 will never be forgotten. If it wasn’t for your game 6 performance, 2004 never would have happened. In short, Thank You. Just wanted to let ya know, happy training!

I’ve been a Sox fan since birth (1951) and my Dad was fortunate to see his Sox win the world series in 2004 just before his passing.

It is humbling to hear from you the respect you hold for the Red Sox organaization. It makes me proud to be a fan and even more proud to have a class guy like Curt Schilling on the team.

With free agency, loyalty to a team and to its players has become non-existent and I miss the old days when guys like Ted Williams and Yaz used to iron out contracts one on one with Mr. Yawkey in the office with a hand shake. I know we will not revert back to those times but announcements like this comes close.

Now if the Sox and Lowell can agree to terms, I’ll be one proud happy camper!!! He too seems like a class individual.

    GO SOX!!

  293. sprgdan Says:

back when you first signed with the Red Sox, I was 100% sure that Theo had lost his mind. Never have I been so wrong, you are a 100% class act when it comes to being a leader and an inspiration to the Red Sox and as a member of our community.

After the 07 Series when you posted your possible goodbye, I was ranting to everyone I knew to let the front office know who they felt about you. As fans we dont have alot to say about the business decisions that are made, we should not, however, Red Sox nation wanted to show as much support to you and you have for us. Thank you for working out the kind of deal that was a no brainer for the Sox, and there is no doubt in my mind that you will reach every incentive.

Thanks Curt and of course WELCOME BACK, we are proud to have you here!

  294. soyboy7 Says:

curt, i am so relieved you are back for one more year. i know in the end you still got “paid” but doing what you did with the pay structure is only going to help the sox get some more arms (another oki, anyone?). thank you.

it is so good to know that there are guys in professional sports like yourself and tim duncan. guys who are willing to restructure your contracts to make the overall team better. these are the stories that should rule the sportswire. a-rod just makes me ill. he needs to take a lesson from a three-time champion like yourself.

ditto on lowell. bring him back and we’re set for another parade.

    soyboy7

  295. joei71 Says:

Yeah. OH Yeah. OH YEAH BABY!!!! This ROCKS!!!

I’ll tell you, the only downer about 2004 was that a lot of those guys left, one way or another, the following year. I’m so pleased that Red Sox management sees fit to BRING BACK OUR CHAMPIONS FOR ANOTHER YEAR!!!!

For all those people who said you weren’t gonna be back. You were wrong!!! I knew you’d be back. Anything else would be crazy.

I’m not even gonna say RE-SIGN MIKE LOWELL… cuz it’s GONNA HAPPEN!!!!

Can’t wait to see OUR 2007 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOSTON RED SOX back on the field next year.

Gotta a nice ring to it, don’t it?

Congrats 38, and thanks for everything, especially the decision to stay here!!!!!!

  296. cafriend Says:

GREAT NEWS, Boston loves you! We are proud, fortunate and happy to have you and your family with us for another year. Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication.

  298. Smokin Joe Says:

You wouldn’t happen to know someone WITH one Cy Young vote next year wouldja? Of course not.

Joking aside, welcome back to the team you helped mold. Can’t wait for spring training, oh wait, with the Patriots, I definitely CAN wait so -

Enjoy your vacation Curt, you’ve earned it.

  299. Jclope Says:

I’m excited to see that a deal is done and you’re staying around for another year Curt! You deserve it.

I look forward to next year with you back on the mound.

  300. csdsdance Says:

    Dear Curt,

Kudos to you for being your own agent. Who would know you better than yourself? I’m really happy for you and your family. I have 4 children myself and to uproot them would be an enormous task. And lucky us, the fans, for having the great joy of having you stay where we feel that you belong. This Red Sox World Series team is comprised of some very fine people. It feels like Christmas came early with the World Series, your being signed, Kevin Youkilis getting his first gold glove! So much to be proud of in Boston. So, congratulations, welcome back, even though you never left and if you are reading, Theo, “PLEASE RE-SIGN MIKE LOWELL”. We deserve him just as much as any one else!

  301. denro55 Says:

Curt, today is the first time I have ever responded to your comments, and I am pleased to be able to do so twice. You have been my favorite Red Sox player for years, due to your classy demeanor, family values, and dedication.

I am thrilled you have chosen to make this your home. We are lucky to have you as one of our own, and welcome you to the Boston area for as long as you wish.

Well done, and keep up the good work!

  302. mbuzz07 Says:

    Curt,

Congrats on the signing. The Lord definitely wants to keep you here. And I know that if you follow him, you will feel great! It is so great to see Christ followers out there. You are a wonderful role model and you and Shondra should be proud! What a testimony you are, to follow God and not money! I am looking forward to seeing what you will bring to Red Sox Nation next year! Hopefully we will see you in Ft. Myers!

God Bless you and your family!

  303. gundamjk Says:

Congrats Curt, although I am a Cleveland fan and would have loved to see you in an Indians uniform, I am pleased that you got to play for the team you wanted, have a great last season!

  304. cros97301 Says:

Congrats Curt!!!! You are a class act and I am so very happy that you will finish your career with Boston. No to resign Mike Lowell and get another quality starter and we shall repeat as champions

  305. jespah Says:

    Hi Curt,

Thanks for everything — and for staying. I, too, am a transplant from outside the Hub. Boston is unlike any other city.

Now, I’ll never be a major league pitcher (er, mainly because I’m female, and a few years older than you), but I do have a little experience with watching weight. Here’s hoping it’s as smooth a ride as possible.

    Glad to have you back.

  306. lindawitz Says:

Congratulations Curt. I am so impressed by how you put your family and the team first.

We had a very good friend who died of ALS – we walk in his honor each year wearing a picture of him with his Bosox cap on! My husband and I are very impressed by your devotion to the cause.

As a lifelong Red Sox fan I am honored that you have chosen to retire in a Red Sox uniform.

Can’t wait for the ‘08 season – I’m going through baseball withdrawal!!

  307. shemp Says:

congrats curt Its nice to have a player come into town and fall in love with the city and its red sox nation a couple more signings and we can all go into the holidays feeling good about the 08 season.sounds like a fair contract hopefully you can get that last incentive the cy young award or at least one vote we all Know the weigh in will be no problem for you enjoy the winter see you in the spring

  308. themurth Says:

Curt, I am psyched to see you coming back! As a 41 year old athlete myself, I couldn’t agree with you more about how our bodies don’t respond nearly as good as when we were 10 years younger. I recently went on a low fat, high protein diet and it really does work. Cut out the fat and exercise and your body will respond favorably. Imagine retiring from this game by being in the best shape of your life? It can be done if you focus from now until spring training. I am certain you are tired from the long season but look at it as giving back to your body. Eating well and doing cardio and strength exercises will replenish your body. You might not have all the strength that you once had, but believe me, you are a smarter pitcher, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you don’t give us 200+ innings and 15+ wins. Heck, who knows, maybe 20 wins. That will depend on your conditioning and nutrition. I am hopeful for a great ending to an already outstanding career! Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

  309. Di. Says:

    Dear Curt,

    ZOMG@!@@@@@2!!!!@!!1!!11!!!!1!!1one!!!!1eleven!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m so happy that you and the Sox made a deal. I think you are an awesome fit in Boston. You give as much as you get. Don’t worry about the money. You are such a hometown hero that your endorsements will make Payton Manning green with envy.

I’m very happy for you. (Ok, I’m happy for me too!!)

I really believe that your presence will help the development of the rest of the pitchers. What a nasty starting pitching rotation!! You, Becket, Dice-K, Lester, Wakefield–not to mention THE Tavarez!!! But wait if a team gets past the starters there is the bull pen all stars to face. The Bull Pen drum line is there to get inside the other team’s head!

Oh yes and PLEASE SIGN LOWELL!!! Lowell has won the hearts and minds of Red Sox Nation. He’s a class act. He’s a dirt dog. He’s a honorable replacement for Bill Mueller.

    When is truck day!!!! :-)

    -Diane.

  310. webguydpo Says:

Congrats for staying with the Sox, Curt!!!! It is so refreshing to see an athlete with character and commitment to an organization to whom he has given so much already. I was afraid that Game 2 of the WS was the last time I would see you in a Red Sox uniform, but thank God you proved me wrong. With a rotation of Beckett, you, Dice-K, Wake, and Lester, with Buchholz ready also, I see more good things on the horizon next year. Your leadership is an invaluable commodity in today’s day and age of selfish, spoiled-rotten athletes. I’m so glad you’ll be staying in New England, the best place in the world. You’re a treasure, and I will cherish every start you make next year, including in the WS. Thanks again for continuing to make Boston and Fenway your home, and best of luck next year!

    P.S. SIGN LOWELL!!!!!!!!!

  311. catchersrule Says:

    As the Frog says: “Yeahhhhhh!”

I’ll be happy to see you next year, certainly! And I look forward to more stuf about your studio38 in here during the off-season. Now I’m just like the rest of the fans waiting for news about Lowell and keeping what fingers I can crossed…

  312. oldbittercraig Says:

glad to have you back. thanks for everything you’ve brought to the team over the past four years and will undoubtedly bring next year – the “can do” attitude, the clutch performances, the candidness with the Sox faithful. best of luck next season.

  313. Walt Says:

Great News! We are happy that you will be with the Red Sox for one more year. Best of luck with your off season exercise program, SHADE and “Curt’s Pitch for ALS.” I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

  314. 1creativemind Says:

CONGRADULATIONS ON A GREAT DEAL! Kudos to you and management coming to favorable terms. Perhaps you left some money on the table, but hopefully it can be used to re-sign Lowell.

And what a compliment for you and your family to choose Boston as your home. New England is certainly honored to have you all here!

    You’re re-signing makes this team very D A N G E R O U S. I’m so freakin excited for 2008!

BIG SHOUT-OUT to Yoooouuuuk in winning the Gold-Glove!

    Everyone together now, “RE-SIGN LOWELL”

  315. southy12 Says:

This is fantastic news. I know you are still a quality pitcher due to your hard work and study. I have always liked you with us not only as a ball player but as a human being as well. Best of luck for next year and your future years as a commentator!

    Thanks, Schill

  316. justagirlinboston Says:

Curt, you are one heck-of-a-person. WOW!

  318. nedsson Says:

Great decision Curt, choosing to stay is the absolute right move. Decisions need to be made with everyone involved, your wife and kids at this point of your career are as important as where you pitch. cant wait to see your name in the spring in the “World Champion Red Sox 2008 starting rotation” Ive never seen the circus in Boston and dont want to see it now with “payrod” sign M. Lowell

  319. varitekchick Says:

THANK YOU for 2004, THANK YOU for 2007, THANK YOU for all you and Shonda do for the community, THANK YOU for your part in getting this deal done and THANK YOU in advance for 2008!

  320. bookends51 Says:

    Hi Curt,

This was the best news ever! I love watching you on the mound and was so upset that you might not be there. Congrads and am SO glad you’re staying. Now go talk to the brass about Mike! We need him too!

    GO SOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  321. firejohnmcnamara Says:

Wow, great news! Very innovative contract, I wonder if the Yankees offered Torre a weight loss incentive for that neck thing he’s got going on? lol

HEY CURT, ARE YOU GOING TO WEBCAST YOUR WEIGH INS???

You definately should! That’d be highsterical.

    Curt.

    you

    SHOULD.

  322. shajam14 Says:

    Thank you Theo,

You did not let him leave home. Thank you Curt,Shonda and kids for returning the love and desire to remain with RS nation. Work hard Curt as you always have but this is it so work harder than ever and enjoy your last season exactly where you belong. 1983 was a special season for me as I am and forever will be a Carl Yastrzemski fan and on his last day I cried like a baby with pride and joy and the privlege of watching this man perform over the years. I will never forget that year as long as I live. I am positive I will feel the same about 2008. Thank you for coming back.

    SIGN MIKE LOWELL !!!!!!!!!!!

  323. oscarking Says:

Man, the 2008 Red Sox are gonna make the 2007 Red Sox look like the 2004 Red Sox.

  324. sjcharbonneau Says:

    Curt,

Congratulations. Glad to have you with the team for another season. What a ride so far. I’ve got to tell you that I’ve been a Red Sox fan for over 50 years (Yes, I’m an old bastard) and have seen some big game performances but I will never forget the bloody sock and your gutting it out this post season.

The team looks poised for more success and very happy you and your family will be New Englanders for at least another year!

    sjc

P.S. PLEASE TELL YOUK WE’RE PROUD OF HIM TOO!

  325. drazzen Says:

Welcome back, Curt. I hope 38 stays in Boston forever!!! (and not Gagne)

  326. Scott Saftler Says:

Thank you, Curt, for what you have done and what we hope you will do in ‘08. If you can teach impart half of your knowledge to some of the young’uns on the staff next year, your salary will be MORE than worth it, even if you don’t throw a pitch all year.

If you don’t want to go into politics after you retire, perhaps a job on the coaching staff is in your future?

  327. twinsmom2 Says:

    Curt…

so glad you are coming back…what better place to finish out your phenomenal career. I bet Jason is so happy too.

And you are so right about Mike….bring him back. We need him….that would be gold gloves at the corners.

Enjoy the offseason with your family…can’t wait for spring training.

  328. mrgringosuave Says:

Mr. Schilling, I’m ecstatic you will retire in a Boston uni! It’s awesome Theo and yourself wrapped this up so quickly and didn’t let it drag on. Us in Red Sox Nation are proud to wear your jersey around whatever town USA we are in. Stay healthy in the offseason and see you in April!

  329. scottydidnt Says:

I just like how you said and meant that you would absolutely NOT play for the yankees. It means you truly have become a Red Sox and that means the world to us. There are others players that never understand that and never truly had that passion. Thanks

  330. digris Says:

Thrilled to have you stay/back. I heard Drew was hoping to buy his house back – he’ll need to rent if he wants back in the state. Have some whiskey then grab the iron and get lifting man. You’re the king.

  331. Timothy Haroutunian Says:

Congratulations on coming back to the Sox!!! I agree with you on the last bit, SIGN MIKE LOWELL.

  332. richlovesbaseball Says:

Welcome back Curt! I was delighted to hear the news about your new contract with the Sox. I am willing to bet there is not one member of the Nation who would have it any other way! You mean so much to this team, and to Boston in general. Thanks for loving our city! Good luck in 2008. I know I will be routing for you. (my 10 year old nephew, too! You are his hero!)

  333. richlovesbaseball Says:

    rooting, not routing!

  334. redsox38 Says:

Curt, Glad to hear that you back for another year. Go 2008 Red Sox!!!

  335. joeyandlena Says:

    Curt,

First of all a Big Congrats and welcome back.

I hope you read this, Me and my wife have been very big fans of you and the redsox, Just to give you a background. Married in 2000 my wife WAS a yankee fan “yep I did Marry her, however in 2004 we sat down and watched the AL Championships and #1 were very impressed at you and your commitment to the game, Basically you could say you gave your ankle for the redsox and Baseball “the Fans” It was in game #4 I had finally got her converted. We both are very passionate about baseball. Our apartment is basically all decorated in redsox and schilling. We have named our dog ” Schilling” I know its crazy but you have the spirit in baseball and that dog sits down and watches each game with us. She gets very confused when you pitch and when they announce your name. Our christmas’s since then have alway include the Redsox. Last year we even went to the extent of our christmas tree being all redsox, with a santa on top with a redsox symbol and bat and glove. Well we have a 20X20 photo of fenway with picture of you ,Varatek, Papi and Manny and now Dustin. We are in hopes this year will be our first at fenway and hope to see you pitch. It seems every year we try to get tickets but because of work or not able to purchase them successfully we miss the oppourtunity, but with our apartment set up like it is we live the redsox each night you play. IN closing, a big thank you to you and your wife for staying in Boston. It was honorable of you to stay at the price as you are worth it and more. I pray that next year we can go to a game and hopefull see the best Pitcher in baseball pitch. If you would like to see a pic of Schilling the dog please email me at joeyandlena930@msn.com. I would love to send you a pic of the pup in her redsox uniform. Thanks again curt.

    Two crazy but passionate fans

    Joey and Lena

  336. justinatwell Says:

thanks Mr. Schilling…..we are glad your back for the 2008 season. Your right lets sign Mr. Lowell, he had a terrific season this year and we need him back at the hot corner to contend for another World Championship in 2008. Thank you for your support and keeping working hard. Go SOX!!!!

  337. twistedsistah Says:

Great news, Curt, congratulations to you and your family, and good for us too!! This made my day, I’m so happy to know you’re staying in the Nation!

Now if the management will hurry up and resign Lowell…

  338. danzio Says:

Thank you for being such a great role model for all . . . it’s NOT always all about the money. Too many players forget that. I’m happy to see that you’ll be with Boston until the end!

  339. TheBoss Says:

    Curt,

    Congrats.

We would’ve loved to see you in St. Louis but your heart is in Boston, and I admire you for finding yourself.

    Curt ~

Congrats on coming back! I’m really excited to see you pitch again next year. I thought that you weren’t gonna come back from the fact that you said goodbye. But we’re very excited to have you another year in Boston. :)

And I totally second you “Sign Mike Lowell” comment… any way you can influence the management to do that?? Also, any chance you have some news on that? I liked reading how things were going with your negotiations… I haven’t heard anything about Mike. But we definitely want him back! No A-rod!!!

    ~Angela

  342. mikeec7 Says:

Curt, as a Red Sox fan I could not be happier. You are a classy guy playing for a classy organization. An entire generation of Red Sox fans did not get to see their team win a World Series, thanks in large part to you Curt, we have seen it twice!!! For that I must say thank-you and God bless.

  343. ange2386 Says:

PS – is anyone else excited that the Yankees have no more Torre and now Pettitte isn’t coming back? haha, i love it!!

  344. darkanian Says:

    Yay !!! Congrats!!

  345. joshuahughes Says:

    Congratulations Curt!

I am glad you are coming back to Boston for one more year and will be able to help these great young pitchers that we have.

My friend and I flew up to Boston from Florida for Game 2 of the World Series and watched you pitch!!! It was a trip of a life time and I will never forget it. Thanks for making it such an exciting game.

Best of luck next year :)

    Josh

  346. audram Says:

I said it before and I’ll say it again – there is much more on the table when it comes to you and your family being a part of Red Sox Nation. As far as would ofs, could ofs and should ofs . . .You and Teddie Bruschi are in a class all your own. Nice to see there are still some athletes that our kids can look up to.

Now we have to “shill” for Lowell!!!

“shill” – a person who publicizes or praises something or someone for reasons of self-interest (we all want him), personal profit – (more likelly to win if he is on our side), or friendship or loyalty (it’s easy to be loyal to someone who did it all year – all the time — and didn’t boast or brag).

  347. tcelt Says:

    Curt:

I can’t say enough about you as an individual and a pitcher. You’ve set the standard for the Red Sox organization, Red Sox Nation, and the sport. I want to pass on a short story: in 2004, a friend of mine lost her mother and, her son a grandmother on Labor Day Weekend. To get away from the situation and after making arrangements for their mother/grandmother for her funeral, we journeyed to Fenway as they both wanted to get out of town and have some fun. You provided that on that day as you pitched well against the Rangers and loghtened our load that day. I want to thank you for that personal memory and the others you’ve given over these years.

Thank you for showing what counts in life and in employment, its not just the money. Thank you for finiishing your career where yoy started and, we plan to journey to Cooperstown again (as we did in May 2005) but this time when you are inducted!! Bravo!! tcelt

  348. wildgift Says:

Curt, many congratulations on your integrity and your new deal with the RS. It means a lot to RSN that you have chosen to end your estimable career in a Bosox uniform. For all that you have brought to the team, the Nation and the sport, i thank you from the bottom of my heart.

    Cannot wait for the repeat!!!

Best from a Sox fan in exile in Los Angeles…

  349. kja270 Says:

Great news, its fitting that you pitch your last inning as a member of the Sox. Thanks for bringing integrity to the forefront and highlighting whats truely important, that being family. Your priorities are dead on.

  350. pemliza Says:

I was so glad to hear this morning that the deal was getting done! I am trhilled that you will be going back to the Sox next year–you should finish your career as a Red Sox.

And ditto on your last remark as well—now sign Mike Lowell!!

Here’s for going after a repeat title in ‘08!!

  351. schillriffic Says:

Curt, I have never bought a player jersey in my 49 years. As an adult I thought it silly to wear an athletes name on my back. The old saying that “it is about the name on the front of the jersey that matters” made a lot of sense to me. But, I am going to have to make the “Schilling exception” to the rule. I admire the fact that you speak your truths and live by your word. Thanks 38!

  352. fredjude Says:

    Mr. Schilling,

We want to express our extreme happiness for you and the Boston Red Sox’s Front office for allowing us to watch you pitch in a Red Sox uniform for one more year.

My wife and I dated during the 2004 World Championship and we got married in October of 2005. We watched almost all of the Red Sox’s games this year except the ones that were blackout when they played Seattle.

I want you to know that we have always admired you and your family, and you have given us more enjoyment and pleasure than we could ever had hoped for. Thanks for the memories and for the future ones also.

    Fred and Nancy

  353. btsla Says:

Wow, this is BIG!!!! Just the way you wanted it. For you and your family. It’s a great all american story with alot of incrediable memories and a beautiful ending.

I guess I won’t be taking you to dodger stadium and seeing your last season here with the pre-mo seats that you once gave me.

    I am sure your ecstatic,

  354. carms1979 Says:

    Curt,

    Great to have you back!!!

Curt, you’re a class act. I hope you and your family stay in this area for a long time. Please allow me to tip my hat to you…..

    Now let’s resign Lowell too!

  356. patsman Says:

Curt: congratulations not only for a great season ,that we all appreciate, but for signing this deal with integrity and with class. You are a great asset to the Boston area and to all of New England.

Best of success next year, …you deserve it!!!

  357. elnort68 Says:

    Curt,

I can’t tell you how happy I am to see the news. You along with the rest of the team’s players have restored the Red Sox to greatness. I was in the park at game 2 of the World Series and my wife framed the ticket. Watching you pitch that night was the highlight of my love affair with the Sox!!

    Thanks Again and Conrats!!

  358. Redsauce Says:

So any vote will get you a Cy Young vote?

How about I give you mine and we split the million bucks?

I’m not a sportswriter or anything, but you didn’t specify, so I think I should get it.

  359. 2redsox Says:

Thank you Shill… I cannot say it enough. Without you, this team would be 90 years without a WS Championship. I do appreciate your attitude and commitment to the team. As I’m sure you learned very quickly, the Red Sox are a team of millions… and I speak from my corner of the Nation in saying that I know you will meet all your 08 goals and earn every penny you can from this deal. You have my Cy Young Vote already! : )

  360. rightstuff Says:

Curt So Glad you are coming back next year and that is A Great Birthday Present From The RedSox. I AGree with you sign Mike Lowell as soon as possible. I heard David Ortiz had surgery and I will keep him in my Prayers as he heals. I can’t wait until 2008!!!!!!!!!.

Excellent! What a powerful, clutch rotation for 2008! With your arm and your brains the smart money is on a Nolan/Roger renaissance season. I am expecting serious fan pressure and market demand for you to return for a 2009 season. The fans will certainly be calling for it. You ‘da man!!!!! I don’t know a single Red Sox fan whose only disappointment is that the season is over. We’re all so glad you are coming back!

-Red Sox Nation, Austin Texas branch (big time support in this city!)

  364. patsy24 Says:

Congratulations Curt. Very happy that Boston is still your home. I hope it always will be. I started my weigh ins on Saturday plus a new exercise regime. I guess I got a little out of shape in October watching late night baseball (that I LOVED every moment of) while struggling to get up and work the next morning. I’m right there with you in spirit. Have a fantastic 08. ST will be here before we know it and after some agonizing glacial spells and deep snow storms I sure.

  365. lyricaloflowell Says:

This is exactly what I said in your post after you posted the letter. Get ten mil gauranteed, which with the weight thing is exactly what you did, and what I alluded too. That way you both have no risk if your healty by loading it with incentives. If you have an incredible year, they perhaps get you at a steal. Like if your 18-10 with 200 plus strikeouts and get like 10 votes for cy, or something like that or better. Than they make out. If you have a year like last year, which is you do well, but not incredible, and you are in shape you will probably be like 13-7 or something. Which is great you make $10 mil, which is arguably what that is worth maybe a touch more, if your in shape and go 8-8 or something, then its very fair maybe a bit more beneficial for you. But legacy is important and going in the Hall wearing a sox hat is nice!

Congrats, you in shape at 42 is better than most anyone at any age. Ps, get in the gym and work that arm and shoulder to hit 95 again. Age is bullshit, its all about health. Recoop time, is just an accumulation of injury and lack of commitment to come back which keeps it lower. I want 15 wins, and see you hitting 94 95 now and then, and 3 playoff wins or more!

Peace and good luck and congrats to you and your fam.

  366. brenken Says:

Curt, I am very happy that you have worked out an agreement with the Red Sox for next year!

Today was a good day in Red Sox Nation with the news of your signing and Youk winning a Gold Glove.

For anyone wishing to celebrate the Sox winning the World Series and support Curt’s charity of choice, order some holiday cards from the FL Chapter of ALS. All proceeds from the sale of these cards go towards research at the national level. It was our choice to use the money for national research since Red Sox Nation isn’t only located in MA or FL.

You can see part of the snowman with a World Series trophy in my avatar picture but there are some other Red Sox themed cards on the web site.

Go to http://www.springingforacure.com and click on the holiday card link. It will take you to the FL Chapter of ALS where you can place your order. The cards have been reduced to $10 for 20 cards so it’s a really good value. Curt has been a major part of Springing for a Cure for the last 4 years at spring training.

Cards are mailed out 3-5 business days from your oder being placed.

FYI, there are only a couple of boxes of the Scoreboard card from 2004 still available.

  367. colonnade Says:

    Congratulations Curt

There’s a large group of us here that are so happy you have signed another year with the Red Sox. We can’t wait to see you pitch again in a Red Sox uniform.

The blog has been great – thanks for sharing your personal information and being so candid.

Best Wishes for a successful 2008. Thanks for being such an integral part of our World Series Victories.

Looks like we’re getting our holiday presents early!

    Next up – resigning Lowell.

  369. yankeehatinactor Says:

    Big Schill,

It’s great to see a professional athlete really prioritizing his family, teammates, and fans over his bottom line. Of course, you’ve already made a boatload of money in this game, so I don’t think it’s fair for anyone to use this contract to make other guys look bad by comparison; but it’s certainly refreshing to see anyone in modern pro sports actually stand behind his, “I love this town – it’s not about the money, ” rhetoric instead of just using it as a marketing gimmick.

Thanks so much for coming back to the Red Sox. If they don’t retire your number in 2009, every single person in the Nation is going to let management hear about it. So far, you’ve won us two world championships, and I think that you had as much to do with the latest as you did with the greatest. I’m sure John Farrell deserves all the credit you’ve given him for the performance of the young pitchers, but I can’t imagine how Papelbon, Buchholz, and Delcarmen could have all flourished so early in their major league careers without daily access to you, a pitcher who’s compiled more knowledge about pitching to today’s hitters than just about any other active player (and, it must be said, who loves to vocally demonstrate that knowledge as much as you do).

I hope you stay in the game for a long time to come, whether it be as a player, coach, or manager. Welcome back.

  370. scredsoxgirl Says:

SCHILL!!! SO SO SO GLAD TO HAVE YOU BACK!!! IT MADE MY TUESDAY!! I had posted about you on my blog, and now I will have to update with the good news!

  371. bostonmouth Says:

    HELL YEAH SCHILL! :D

I don’t think anybody (except maybe you) could be happier in the Nation today. We all wanted you to stay!

  374. Kat Says:

Glad to have you back Curt.

As an athlete myself and a long time fan of the Red Sox, one of the most enjoyable parts of the past season was watching ‘the team’. In this day and age, it is refreshing to watch a group of professional athletes who are out there working hard, supporting each other, and competing amongst themselves. Competing because you don’t want to be the one that let’s everybody down. Competing and not trying to prove yourself better than a teammate, just worthy of being a teammate.

  375. itsourtime Says:

congrats curt. im happy for you and yours and for all of us fans.

  376. bigschillingfan Says:

I think that all your fans in Red Sox nation are elated to hear that you got exactly what you wanted from your contract. I hope that you do return next season in great shape, like Agassi when he stormed back in the best shape of his life.

Also good luck with your ALS commitments and 38Studios!

  377. shifratoby Says:

This is great news!! Although I agree that we should sign ML, I wanted to sign you as much. I’ll be forever grateful for what you did in 2004 and think that you are a uniquely great guy to have on the team. You seem to have a huge heart. And I’ve heard the younger pitchers talk about how you influence them.

I’ve been a Red Sox fan since I was a little girl growing up in Portland, Maine — listening to baseball on the radio with my dad, before we had a TV.

As I wrote in the Win it For Book, I just wish that he could have been alive to see these wins.

You and your family are great citizens in so many ways.

    Can’t wait for next year!

    Sherry from Newton

  378. fran728 Says:

    Curt,

As a lifelong fan of the Red Sox I cannot express my appreciation for what you have brought to Red Sox Nation. Not just your skills as a pitcher, but as a classy, honest and generous individual. You are a great example for younger ballplayers and your presence in the clubhouse in 2008 will be an inspiration for those young guys.

I realize that you have to do what is best for your family and even if would have chose to leave us, you would never find this fan “booing” when your name is announced and I will always wear my “Schilling” Red Sox shirt with great pride.

Thanks for everything and thanks for staying. I hope to be in Cooperstown when they induct you into the hall of fame.

  379. rummiesdummy Says:

Curt, when the World Series was over I really didn’t imagine having you back for next year. I’d figured you’d ride off into the sunset, get 13+ million a year in Philly or elsewhere, and play out your last season because I didn’t think you’d go for a incentive laden contract. I’m glad that you did. When you take the mound, whether you have your good stuff or mediocre, you battle. You tip your hat to the ump, whether he had a good strike zone or bad, and end your day like a gentleman should. Some say you speak too much, but I’m not one of them. You are what a athlete should be; Upfront, honest, and humble all in one. You admit your faults, and for that, include clauses to earn the money that you want by making sure you stay on the top of your game in the offseason. Thank you for being a honest athlete, one who puts in a good six-seven innings, and is there afterwards to admit he sucked, or that things went good. We don’t need Alex Rodriguez in the clubhouse, we need Mike Lowell, another hard working good guy. Theo, if your reading his blog, SIGN MIKE LOWELL! He’s worth every dollar.

  380. ooakes Says:

It was great to see you made the decision to stay with the Sox as a family and it is refreshing to see you use the word “we” in your blog and not the word “I.” It proves you are a husband/father first and a baseball player second. You are an inspiration to many for what you do off the field in addition to what you have done on the field. We are very glad and excited you have decided to stay in Boston for what we hope is not your final season but, if it is, you can go out on your own terms. And since you are going to be here anyway, what do you say we win just one more World Series…3 is a good number!

  381. mmaseadog Says:

Curt Congrats for signing and staying in Boston. I guess the blowhard sports prognasticators (Shaugnessey and company) that previously stated that you had burned bridges with Theo and the owners and that no way would they ever sign you were way off base as usual. Thanks for sticking around.

  382. yuckthefankees Says:

    Curt,

I can’t wait to see you make 50,000 people from New York shut up….again.

  383. fenwayfaithfulforever77 Says:

Curt, as a lifelong Red Sox fan and a fan of yours since 2004 when you joined this incredible organization, I cannot begin to tell you how thrilled I am that you will be finishing your career with us in Boston!! You have been an amazing asset to this team and I truly believe we couldn’t have won either championship without you!

We all know you probably could have gotten more on the open market, but you chose to stay with us, taking more into consideration than just a paycheck, this speaks volumes of your character! I think I speak for all of Red Sox Nation when I say that we couldn’t be happier to have you back! Thank you for all you have contributed and all you will continue to bring to this team! BOSTON LOVES CURT SCHILLING!!!

  384. whereisvince Says:

yea they NEED to sign Mike Lowell. The guy proved himself. He put up MVP type numbers. And he has a great baseball attitude.

  385. sherbs58 Says:

is it time for spring training yet????……….man I miss baseball allready, and it hasn’t even been two weeks….mabye I’ll start going to the gym with you Curt to pass the time….haha Have a great offseason, you’ve earned it Schill…

  386. milloy Says:

You guys crack me up with the “SIGN MIKE LOWELL” talk, as if it’s that easy. It all depends on what the guy is asking for. I’d love to have him back, but anything over a 3yr deal for a 33yr old is lunacy.

  387. charlieinneedham Says:

10 top reasons glad you’re back

    10. I remember the excitement in November 2003 when it was anounced you were signed. The Sox had come so close to beating the Yankees that fall. Now, with Theo, it looked like management had finally figured out that great pitching wins championships, and that a personal appeal to you over the holiday was in order. With the thought of you and Pedro as our aces, the remainder of our Thanksgiving weekend was spent giving thanks we could spend our winter, spring, summer and fall with the near certainty of winning it all in 2004.

    9. You say what you mean, and mean what you say. How refreshing.

    8. You have taken a position on another almost taboo subject – obesity- and no doubt will be an inspiration for the many afflicted with it.

    7. Your work for ALS clearly comes from the heart.

    6. It is so good to hear you want to bring your children up here.

    5. Josh Beckett, Clay Bucholtz, Jon Lester, Jonathan Papelbon and Manny Delcarmen can continue to profit from your approach to the game.

    4. What a pleasure to watch your transformation, using “brains over brawn” to prove Warren Spahn’s observation that “Hitting is timing. Pitching is upsetting timing.”

    3. You gave new meaning to the term RED Sox.

    2. You have transformed Red Sox Nation from a group of griping “what if…”, “wait ’till next year”, never expecting to succeed neurotic fans, to a nation (most importantly our children) who feel like winners.

    1. We get to go on the ride over the entire 2008 summer with you. And then in the Fall, we only need 11 victories in the post season to celebrate another World Series victory.

  388. jkathyb Says:

Congratulations! We want to say that it was such a pleasure to meet you and Shonda Saturday night at the Curt’s pitch for ALS Reception. As parents with a very young ALS patient we cannot thank you enough for all you and Shonda have done for ALS patients and their families, you are both very dear to our hearts. You have given so much of yourself in so many ways and we just want to say “thank you”. Some days it is hard to find something to be happy about, but I will always cherish seeing a father and son together watching the Red Sox win the World Series. It was a GREAT day on Saturday despite the weather…..Justin says hi to you both!!

  389. mmc1391 Says:

    Congratulations Curt!

Once again….you have proven to be a class act! You put your family, Boston, and the Red Sox ahead of money. I couldn’t be happier! We will never forget what you have done for us and what you will continue to do for the fans of Boston!

I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that it is not only great to have Curt Schilling the pitcher in Boston…but it is also great to have Curt Schilling the gentleman in Boston!

    Welcome Home Schilling Family!!!

    mmc1391

  390. suesunswim Says:

Hooorrrayyy, I am so glad you are staying. I have just one small request, would you PLEASE just slap that curly haired boyfriend??? HE is the blowhard and a really jealous one at that.

    Re-sign Lowell!!!!

  391. jjccb Says:

    YAY!

I was extremely glad to hear this today, and very pleased with you for taking their deal. Proves your loyalty to The Sox even further. I’m looking forward to seeing this winning combination of players in action again next year.

Oh, and I am in complete agreement with that last sentiment:

    Sign Mike Lowell!!!!!!!

  392. bosoxdiehard Says:

    Schill:

Welcome back and I look forward to your return for another season.

Just remember when you are training … it’s something I use when I do pre-season workouts.

“Pain is temporary … victory is forever.”

Congratulations … and “why not back to back … why not us?”

  393. seattlesoxfan Says:

    Curt Schilling,

    You are a hero!

    You are an inspiration!

You have ALWAYS kept your word.

You make it happen and never back down.

When the stakes are highest you always find a way to come through victorious.

We are lucky to have you on our team.

I will never forget Thanksgiving 2003 and knowing that if we could sign you that history for the Red Sox would change forever.

Thank you beyond all words for working in partnershiip wiith Theo to make a deal that works out best for you, your famiily, your team and your fans.

It is so refreshing in this age to see a player that wasn’t about chasng the highest dollar total at all costs. I hope that the former Yankee 3B is able too learn something from you there.

You are a hero. Thank you, thank you and again THANK YOU!

  394. kimbakap Says:

    AMEN!

  395. redsoxlover Says:

    Curt,

I am soooo extremely happy that you will be back with us next year!!!!! Thank-you for being the honorable, wonderful man that you are! If you need any help with the weight issue, we have a wonderful online support group on a wonderful website called SparkPeople.com. We have a team on the site called Red Sox Nation which is pretty self-explanatory, but we’re all there to help each other and support each other to be healthy and fit. We’d love to have you join us! BTW: I’ve lost 86 pounds and my reward to myself was taking the day off from work last Tuesday to travel to Boston and experience the Rolling Rally. It was well worth all the hard work and determination!

    Fondly,

    Patti

  396. redsoxnationinla Says:

    Curt:

Simply, you and your family are a class act! You are wildly accepted and now have deeply rooted youself here as part of the hugely rich sports legends here in New England–and you GET IT–you know what it means and how our athletic heros transcends sports. As your Boston brotheren of sports legends, your now forefather legends knew and experienced for years (i.e. Bird, Bourque, Yaz, Russell, Fisk, Rice, McHale, Parish, “Red” , Orr, Ted Williams, Boggs, Havlichek, Dewy Evans, Neeley, etc), you have cemented and bronzed yourself on to the elite and proud Boston Sports Shrine aka The Holy Grail City of Pro Sports. You will end your career where it started as a draftee. How poetic. You are enshrined here for eternity like all the others that came before–and not bad company you keep either. May you and yours be enternally blessed (and don’t pay attention to any of those negative posts here–they are NY Yuckee lurkers, of course). P.S. Theo, don’t “pull Douquette” like he did with Clemens in ‘96. SIGN MIKEY LOWELL TO A “FOREVER” contract!!!

  397. fivekatz Says:

I know it is customary on this blog to leave messages for you G38. And I would like to say I think it is very cool that I will once gain be entertained on 32 nights by your competitive performances and amazed on countless other days by your quotability, sometimes for the good and sometimes not as much so. Most off all I am grateful that you wanted to play for the team I have come to love as much as I as a fan wanted you to. But if I may I would like to share my thoughts to my MB community regarding today’s events with you and the visitors to 38 Pitches.

    _______________________________________

Curt Schilling IMHO really worked with the RS on this deal. If Curt wasn’t his own agent this deal just like the “Thanksgiving Accord” probably would not have happened. And in this case Schill’s attachment and affection for the team, his teammates, the market and his private life in the region all made a difference IMHO.

Now even for a guy who has earned a LOT of money, Curt probably left a couple of MILLION dollars under the table if he worked his FA with Scott Boras aggression. That’s a lt of cabbage folks.

And speaking of a lot of money $2M to watch your waist line is a hell of an incentive (beats the daylights out of Richard Simmons tapes as a motivator). Any way whoever bets against a motivated Curt Schilling achieving any goal is fool hardy, so I’d venture to say Curt was glad to throw this in for two reasons:

One, he now recognizes that his fitness program must change to match his life changes. And let’s not forget why Curt continues to play. He is a bright guy (even if as a public figure he hangs himself out at moments) and will have a bright if not brilliant second career. He wants to play for his legacy not a paycheck. That incentive is a goal of his to ensure he does that IMO and therefore it was a brilliant choice.

And as fans perhaps of great importance to us, he wants to play for the RS and for the fans of RS Nation. That’s special in an era where management sells you that the name on the back of the jersey is irrelevant and the sport agent tells the player the name on the front of the jersey is irrelevant. On a brilliant day, both matter and that made today a brilliant day.

Whatever the case this worked out wonderfully for the RS for 2008. And most of all I am LMAO tonight at CHB, who in all his pomp-ass stupidity went on NESN and declared that he knew Schilling was done as a RS because both LL and Theo were fed up with Schill. While I doubt it, leaving the supposed sports expert with egg on his face might have been worth a couple of million to Curt.

Whatever the case there are no bad one year deals in this industry and this one just made the RS so much deeper come to 2008. But most of all there is just something right about Curt Schilling finishing his career in a RS uniform. Tip your cap tonight to 38 for being willing to compromise a lot of money and the cache that the value of an MLB contrcat brings to a player.

Now on to the 3B, getting a deal with the 1B through his arbitration years and giving Tito an extension worthy of his accomplishments. :)

    Dear Curt,

What wonderful news. You’re surely aware how beloved you are here in Red Sox nation…..you “rode” into Boston, erased that curse, and became our “nation’s” hero. We will be forever indebted to you. Bask in the glory which you deserve. Congratulations on your new contract, and sincere best wishes for a restful, happy postseason to you and your family.

    MIKE LOWELL, ARE YOU WATCHING?

  399. richgnx Says:

Curt it’s great to have you back in uniform so quickly! Somehow, Curt Schilling in Cardinal red just didn’t sound good. It’s a glorious day in Red Sox nation! Now, go hit the treadmill and come back and have a Curt Schilling type season, fatty!

  400. mtalinm Says:

the following is a parody of http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2007/11/done_deal_2.html

Dan Shaughnessy and the Boston Globe finalized a one-year, $80,000 extension to his contract.

According to Shaughnessy , who first posted the confirmation on his web site, the deal includes a possible $60,000 in incentives in addition to his $80,000 base salary: $20,000 in “stupidity” incentives (based on his next six articles), $30,000 based on factually-correct articles published, and $10,000 if he receives even a single supportive email from a Globe reader.

Shaughnessy , who made $130,000 in 2007, added that the “stupidity” clause was added by him, not the Globe.

“I inserted the ’stupidity’ clause in the second round of offers, counter offers,” Shaughnessy wrote. “Given the mistakes I made last winter and into spring training I needed to show them I recognized that, and understood the importance of it. Being a smart-aleck and an idiot are two different things. I also was completely broad sided by the fact that your mind doesn’t act/react the same way as you get older. Even after being told that for the first 39 years of my life. Now I can’t get on Tony [Massarotti] anymore, which sucks, and I am sure the clause will add 15-100 more jokes to Schilling’s CHB joke book.”

The final step of the deal, according to Shaughnessy , was an IQ test, which he said took this morning and passed…barely.

Shaughnessy wrote that he thought he could not have earned more money or gotten a longer deal elsewhere.

“Did I ‘leave’ money on the table, no. Could I have gotten another year? I don’t think so,” he wrote. “In talking with my ‘wingman’ Amalie Benjamin, assessing the market place and current crop of bloggers as well as existing contracts. Looking at the papers that called — not that the Herald even called — my best guess would be that I’d be lucky to get a guest-blogger gig on mlbtraderumors.com.”

Shaughnessy did, however, say that money played a role in his decision.

“Saying it’s not ‘about the money’ is a lie too,” he wrote. “Both sides have a price, at some number I was not a viable option for the Boston Globe, and at another number the Globe might have become a non-contender to me, but we both wanted this to happen and it did.”

Shaughnessy , who turns 41 on Nov. 14, wrote 15 smartmouth editorials about Curt Schilling during the regular season. In the postseason, he left reality completely in the dust by claiming on NESN that Schilling had mounted a “pathetic campaign” to be resigned and that the Red Sox front office had wearied of him, and that he “shouldn’t let the door hit him on the way out.”

“Bottom line is Mr. Henry, Mr. Werner, Mr. Lucchino, Theo, Tito [Francona] and John [Farrell] all wanted me to show up in the trunk of one of Manny’s cars, but I wanted to be back,” Shaughnessy wrote. “So it’s all good.”

With Shaughnessy back in the fold, the Globe reporters for 2008 appears set with Amalie Benjamin, Gordon Edes, Amalie Benjamin, Nick Cafardo, Amalie Benjamin, Steve Silva, and Amalie Benjamin.

The return of Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling was also a factor for Shaughnessy when deciding where to write in 2008.

“Schilling is a huge part of the equation, not just for me either,” Shaughnessy wrote in an e-mail on Friday. “He’s as overrated as anyone I’ve ever written about and probably the most pathetic blowhard in the world … While I would not claim we are very close friends, he was always my punching bag, which is something I desperately need at this point in my career.”

  401. rcushdogdog Says:

    Nice!

So glad you guys locked this down!

You came to town to help bring the ring, were absolutely instrumental and crucial in getting the big first one, and played a huge role in the second. For the first one alone you earned the right to go out on your terms. The second was gravy.

I truly want to express thanks for 2004, the sock game, game 6 in this years ALCS, and for leaving the coin on the table.

As a Sox fan transplanted to Yanker country you have no idea what you have done for me and my ability to talk smack back.

May your last win be in game 2 or 6 of the 2008 World Series. Retire the number and commission the freakin statue.

  402. jnsox07 Says:

    Mr. Schilling,

My sons and I look forward to seeing you take the mound next year and maybe you will be in the rotation when you come to Phoenix. Thanks for sticking to your word Schilling. I am not the only person surprised that integrity still exists among the rich sports people of the Universe.

As for Mike Lowell I have been reading up on what makes him so great at Fenway and I was surprised how different his stats were at Fenway vs other parks. Based on what I have read he deserves 8 million a year and no more. I wouldn’t go higher then 8 if its a four year deal but would go as high as ten million if it was a three year deal. Look at me throwing around the Red Sox money like it’s mine.lol

Oh and Danny Ainge, When Mchale stops wasting Antoine Walker’s time make sure you bring him back to Boston. Antoine like Schilling deserves to be here IN Boston. In fact Walker deserves it more. Make sure you tell that idiot Wyc Grousbeck next time he is at Fenway to stop trying to steal the Red Sox sunshine and go create his own by making Ainge bring back Antoine.

    Hi Curt,

I’m so happy that you and the Sox came to terms for next season! Thank you for sharing your thoughts as well as for sharing the letter that they sent you before the trade which brought you to us.

As a lifelong Red Sox fan, that letter made me proud of the Sox leadership like never before. What a class organization, and their confidence in you was well placed.

Thanks for your blog and best of luck in ‘08…

  410. stonefox Says:

    Curt, Shonda and family,

Take the house off the market– its a dismal time and Randy Moss all settled. Whatever you can do to inspire my husband to get to the gym, I beseech and thank you in advance!

Throughout the season and in between trips to either Fenway or the adorable, charity-driven knitting (and chatting) shop, Graceful Stitches of Medfield, (http://www.gracefulstitches.org/GS/mission.aspx) we said (from our obstructed seats, Sec 33, longtime fans) — we need Curt’s leadership in the club house! Nothing beats experience– and your wisdom in guiding your own contract shows that. Congratulations to you both for demonstrating immense character and restraint in these days of hostage-level salaries that have propelled compensation to stratospheric levels. Maybe we should be examining why we don’t pay people who cure chronic disease in them pay zone.

What people may not know is that your ALS work embraces the smaller, grassroots contributions of families of equally-steadied commitment but of a lesser profile. Every year you’ve been kind enough to donate some memorabilia to the annual Brian Cody Memorial Golf Tournament for the MA Chapter of ALS (http://home.comcast.net/~brianstournament/WebFoundation.htm) which we’ve attended for years at Glen Ellen CC. No flash and dash, just a quiet but important gesture in solidarity for a worthy cause. Thank you to both for what you do individually to enlighten people about important issues– not as celebrity “window dressing” but as wholly-committed people to these causes.

Please tell Shonda that the M-towns hope to see her more! Let’s come up with some new knitting projects for charity. We hope you have Mike Lowell’s ear. And no, we don’t need NYY’s 3-base cast off. Red Sox management has a proven formula of recognizing the right team balance of emerging talent with seasoned experience- a formula not to be tampered with. Thank you for your candor, good humor and timely blog postings. And thanks for remembering, there is no “I” in T-E-A-M.

Now, let’s all toast with the latest vintage of Schilling Schardonnay (http://www.charitywines.com/lbcat.html)! The 2008 season just got that much more exciting! Thanks Theo and the ownership! Will Dan Shaugnessey opt for book rights for your biopic? You have to admit, he was extremly effusive in his praise of your work this past season.

With warmest regards and appreciation (no pink hat here!)

    Stonefox, Millis :)

Philadelphia disowns you. I hate you and I’m burning my Schilling jersey. Thanks for the memories, oh wait, never mind.

Put a towel over your head now buddy.

And you painted your sock. You are pathetic. I hope the Yankees throttle the Red Sox and you guys finish behind the Devil Rays. Curt Schilling you are a TRAITOR.

    PHILADELPHIA DISOWNS CURT SCHILLING.

  412. camster823 Says:

Well Curt I don’t know how you do it.

Why would you want to expose yourself and your wonderful family to the media whackjobs in this area??

You sir are a a RARE commodity. A man whose word is his bond, say what you will do and do what you say.

Good luck to you in 08, but I know LUCK is not what you will be needing. I think come October, you will be needing a wheel barrel to carry the 14 mil you will be bringing home to Shonda and the family.

All my best to you and your family

  413. FireDannyAinge Says:

It’s nice you and Youkilis and papi and Manny are all sticking up for the return of Mike Lowell but every time one of you opens your mouth it drives the price up which in turn might be driving Mike Lowell to the Yankees.

I also hope the Red Sox brass use the common sense that re-signed you in making decisions for the return of Mike Lowell. No offense but Lowell is old for a baseball player and we don’t need to pay him 10 million a year for four years.

  414. bostontechnoid Says:

    WE LOVE YOU CURT!!!

It made me incredibly happy to learn that you re-signed with the Sox. Perhaps I am going to far, but it seems to say a lot about the integrity and ethics of the game, at least as represented by you and the Red Sox.

2004 and 2007 answered the questions: What have you done for me? and What have you done for me lately? Nobody else in baseball in recent memory can answer those questions better than you can. Two World Series wins in four years – what a performance.

2004 – you gave us a great season of hope and

    2004 – an even better post-season

2004 – risking your career for the Red Sox in the playoffs

2004 – playing hurt, playing through pain, yet dominating

2005 – paying for the sacrifices you made in 2004

    2006 – reinventing yourself

2007 – struggling with injury during the regular season yet still able to win games and even throw a one hitter

2007 – post-season heroics beyond anything we could have hoped for

You are a true sports hero and we are blessed to have you with us for another year.

    Thank you Curt!

  415. franjgarciar189 Says:

Curt, I have no words to thank you for what you have done for us (Red Sox fans)… I just pray God to bless you and your family.

As a die-hard Yankee fan, I was very happy to hear that you would be going back to Beantown. Despite my obvious hate for you, despite the anger and rage that I have felt on the occasions where you have beaten us, I realize that you are good for the rivalry and good for baseball in general. It also makes the times that the Yankees were able to stuff a sock in your mouth all that much sweeter. Here’s to hoping that there are many more opportunities in the future. 423. redsoxnorth Says:

Congratulations on the deal, and on the World Series. The Sox have proven to be not just a flash in the pan, but truly the best team in baseball. It should be interesting to see what next year brings, especially if the team goes with a 6-man rotation.

Thank-you for not dragging this out and making Red Sox Nation suffer any longer. The free agent market is a crazy one this year, and it just makes everyone feel better knowing you’ll be back in Boston next year.

It sounds like the whole team is on board with re-signing Mike Lowell. How much influence does that have with the Front Office?

Have a great winter; see you in the spring.

As you said, both you and the Red Sox had a number in mind for which a deal wouldn’t make sense. To everyone’s credit, though, it wasn’t JUST about the money. And that makes a HUGE difference.

We all want Mike Lowell to stay in Boston. He’s good for the team, he’s a fabulous player and he has the kind of heart that Red Sox Nation values. We DON’T want Arod!!!!!! He’s NOT a good fit for our Red Sox!!!!!

When you see them in Spring Training, please share some of your wisdom with them. I think you’ll agree that they have great potential also, but they are still, obviously very young.

Curt, it was great to hear that you will be back in Boston next season. Too many times in the past the Sox have let guys like you “walk” (Fisk, Evans, Lynn, etc) that should have retired as Red Sox. Your imprint on Boston will be felt for many years after you retire (no fat jokes Tito) and with that being said lets hope the Hall allows you to wear a Red Sox cap on your plaque in Cooperstown. Regardless of what uniform you have worn in the past you will always be a Red Sox in the eyes of the Nation.

  448. windwalker33 Says:

Curt, this is today’s post from my Big Man Getting Smaller blog at dedicated to you and your mission:

2 million reasons to cut back to 2,300 calories

If you’ve ever wondered why there have been so many mentions of the Red Sox on this blog that is supposed to be about losing weight, yesterday the planets came into perfect alignment and the question was answered.

According to his “38 Pitches” blog, 40-year-old pitcher Curt Schilling agreed to a 1-year contract to remain with the Sox Monday night, and the contract includes a $2 million weight incentive.

Yes, $2 million. All he has to do for that $2 million is “make weight” at 6 randomly scheduled weigh-ins during the course of the year.

What a country, hmm? It does make good sense both for the player and the team, and my guess is that it will make a big difference in helping Schill to meet the other key incentive in his contract, which parcels out up to $4 million as he hits certain levels in innings pitched.

So, many people might be a little envious here and lament the fact that we all can’t pick up a serious check just by having a salad or two, I am a caring, giving spirit (and a Sox fan for lo these past 50 years).

My mission here is to offer some assistance.

The challenge for Curt, I think, is the challenge that I’ve faced and so many men face when they are at that cusp between the end of their serious “jock” career and, er, whatever it is that comes afterward. Curt’s facing it at 40, whereas most men face it in their 20s or 30s.

You believe that you can work your way back into shape just by punishing your body in the gym, on the field, etc. Changing what you eat is only a minor consideration. You think you can cut back on a beer or two, drop the desserts (at least until after midnight), and cover for it all by burning off a thousand calories a day at the gym. A guy who is in pretty good shape can make that work for a while, but he runs the risk of overtraining, especially when his body is beginning to break down a little bit to begin with.

So here’s what Curt needs to do. He’s 6′4″ and he will turn 41 a week from today. Although his baseball bio says he weight 215, I suspect that’s what he weighed when he was photographed for this 1988 New Britain Red Sox baseball card. My estimate is that he goes 275 to 280 now.

At 275, with moderate exercise, his basal metabolic rate to maintain that weight is 3,822 calories a day. If he cuts 1,500 calories a day from that figure, he can still eat over 2,300 calories a day, which allows for plenty of good steaks, chicken and seafood and even an occasional dessert or beer. (One or the other, not both).

It’s not rocket science. It’s that simple.

    Do the math, dude.

At that rate, he’ll lose 3 pounds a week (1500 x 7 / 3500 = 3) between now and mid-February, when pitchers and catchers report to Spring training. He’ll weigh 235 then, he’ll look great, and he’ll be ready to pitch. He’ll still be strong as a bull, and he’ll have a little extra jingle in his pocket.

If he keeps it up through the season, he could get down to his rookie playing weight by the World Series and then in 2009, his first year of retirement, he’ll be able to run the Boston Marathon with his lovely wife Shonda. Which will no doubt lead to another bloody sock.

The real benefit would be long-term, of course. Like me, Schill has a choice between going through the rest of his life as a load or as a healthy, relatively fit guy. As my friend Nick has mentioned, being 6′4″ or 6′5″ can cover for you only for a while. I fully expected to start seeing Schill at Subway and BoLoco when I am there to pick up my calorie-counted subs and burritos.

    Go, Schill!

As a lifelong Sox fan born in Berkshire county Mass. , living in Yankee country outside Albany, NY , I say “Way to go!”. I’m glad to hear that you signed with the Sox. Perhaps only interesting to me, but “38″ our ‘family’ number. My dad’s HS football jersey # and his stockcar # from his days owning a car at Lebanon Valley Speedway just outside Pittsfield, Mass were “38″. My 4 kids have all played club soccer and all wear “38″. It’s on my dad’s headstone. My brother Pete has a framed, signed jersey of yours in his rec room.

“38″ will always be our family #, and you’ve made it even more special, because you exemplify class, guts and a transparency in professional sports that is very refreshing. Thank you and welcome to our family, “we’ve got your # !!” . The McCarty’s are pulling for you , again !

    Curt,

Congratulations and thank you for staying. As an orthopedic and sports P.T., with 30 years experience, I admire the brilliance in structuring your deal so that you have the motivation and dedication to train harder physically now as you age, to maintain and increase your physical skill sets. It is common knowledge in our field that you have train harder each year just to stay the same, nevermind get stronger, faster, lighter, and have better endurance while preventing injuries than you did previously. It´s like climbing an inverted pyramid.

Your commitment to this next year will probably insure your trip to Cooperstown, if you haven´t already had your ticket punched by virtue of your two World Series championships here, after your already storied career in Philly and Phoenix. Your legend will keep growing in Boston and you´ll be worshipped here forever, until your next stop as the next senator from Massachusetts when Ted K. retires.

Well, I’m very glad to hear you are staying here. I don’t know or even understand the logistics involved in professional sports contracts, but I’m very pleased to hear that you got it done with the Sox, and that you’re sticking around. In an article about you in the Globe several weeks ago, I got the distinct impression that you and your family really like being around here, and living in Medfield. That article made me think that somehow you would find a way to stay

Hey, even Shaughnessy seems pleased in his snide lefted handed fashion. Why wouldn’t he? Now he can continue writing his insulting and nasty comments about you for another full year. He’s already at it as evidenced by today’s column in the Globe. Guys like him need a bully pulpit and a whipping boy to justify their own existence. I guess that’s why Ted Williams called them “The knights of the keyboard”.

I’ve also heard from the Medfield cops that you are on their auxiliary. Knowing that, and being a retired cop from a neighboring town, I can sign off by saying,

Mere words can not express how happy I was to read this news this morning. Had been feeling fairly blue as I tore a ligament in my left leg and it’s playing havoc with work and my other responsibilities. So seeing the headline online this morning just gave me the biggest grin. My kids will be thrilled when they hear the news.

Congrats to Curt and his family, but also to the Sox for doing what was right. And yes, now sign Mike Lowell!

Curt, Can you discuss if A-Rod would be good for the team, chemistry wise?

I think your a class act.

  467. rsoxwest Says:

    Curt,

Phewww!!! What a relief! That was a thrilling few days. Thanks for keeping us clued in as to what was truly going on with your free agency. Best of luck to you in regards to the weight issue. I know you’ll do it and inspire us all to lose some extra pounds!! It’ll be a phenomenon. I can see it now – Curt Schilling weight loss gyms, food line, exercise wear – that’ll keep you busy in your retirement!!

Congrats to you & the fam for getting exactly what you wanted and deserve -your final year in Boston as a Red Sox! Thanks for your honesty in your blog. You are truly the best player ever.

Look forward to seeing you pitch in the rotation in Seattle next summer!! I’ll be there watching with my son. We appreciate your integrity – a much needed trait missing in many pro athletes today. Needless to say, we’ll all be watching the Sox creme the competition in the playoffs and in the Series next October.

    RED SOX RULE!!!!!!! CURT ROCKS!!!

And, RESIGN MIKE!!! (Hello – MVP of the freakin SERIES – nuf said!!)

    Congrats Curt!

I am very happy with the news. What a huge starting rotation next year!!!!!!

Your hand is working excellent to sign as well!!!!!!

Now re-sign Lowell and a trade for Coco Crips.

I recently start a blog in spanish about Red Sox.

Next year a new deal with another World Series!!!!!

    Regards from Barcelona (Spain)

  470. abbeyyyyyyyyy Says:

Curt, I’m very sad you aren’t returning to the Phillies family. I wonder why you would embarrass yourself with less money, and such degrading things as a weight incentive. It saddens me that your heart is with a team you’ve only been with for 4 years, not with the team you spent a majority of your career with. Unfortunately it seems like World Series wins are all that matters to some athletes, and not their history. Good luck, but I expect you will see much more bench time as a Red Sox this year.

  471. map55 Says:

I am thrilled you are coming back for a year. Six-man rotation?

  472. deb19 Says:

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO happy to hear the great news!! actually cried tears of joy, especially when i read your initial comment,it’s so evident that you and your family truly like it here and want to stay for reasons other than baseball.born and raised here, i can see that-i could never live anywhere else-but for you to decide that this is the place you want to settle and it has nothing to do with money, and how much it means to you to retire w/the sox, well i can’t explain what that means to me and all of rsn. as one of the older guys, you’re one of the leaders and i couldn’t imagine being without you!(gonna be hard enough to deal after next year but i’m not gonna think about that now!) you are truly a class act, an awesome human being and what you and shonda have already done for our community in 4 years is outstanding! not only does baseball need more of your type of person but so does the world in general.now if we could just resign dougie and mike,my day would be complete!! thank you from the bottom of my heart!

  473. tmpitgrunt Says:

Congrats Curt!!! Good to have ya back for another year, and hopefully another pennant. This is Jason over at McFarlane. I want to thank you for once again helping my beloved Sox win the World Series; for a second time. I was able to make it back home to Boston for game 6 of the ALCS to watch you pitch. I was up in the stands behind the John Hancock sign and had a great view of the whole field for what was an awesome game. Wish I could have been there for game 1 against Colorado, but alas I needed to get back to the office to help Todd make more cool toys…hahaha. Thanks again for the gift as well, I truly appreciate it. I had it with me at the game and wore the thing for each and every one. Felt like it was a bit of good luck, and it seemed to work wonders as far as I could tell. Anywho, here’s to another great year at Fenway. Hope to see you out here in AZ sometime soon. Take care.

  474. beorning Says:

Congratulations AND thanks, Curt–this is GREAT news!! My college students heard another round of “Tessie” over the classroom speakers as they filed in yesterday–even the brave soul who handed in his midterm a couple of weeks ago with “GO ROCKIES” written across the top. Now I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Mike!

Since this is the first time I’m commenting on one of your posts, I could write a book with all the things I’d like to say, but I’ll keep it short: I wrote my Master’s thesis on what was then The National D-Day Museum, and The National World War II Museum is a major focus of my doctoral dissertation. If I weren’t teaching on Friday, I’d surely be in NOLA for “When Baseball Went to War”–I don’t know how much more perfect a conference could get for me. But ah well–I teach because I love it, so I can’t really complain even if I’d rather be away for just that one day to hear my favorite member of the NWW2M Board of Trustees speak on one of my favorite topics.

Thanks again for all the magic–the heart and drive and dedication that you and the rest of your teammates have displayed continues to inspire me, and I’m already looking forward to watching you next year. I hope that you and your family have a warm Thanksgiving together!!

Curt I am thrilled that you are coming back for another season. It has been a treat to see you pitch several times at Fenway, and I relish the opportunity to see it happen again. Your work on and off the mound is astounding, and I strongly believe that with you’re guidance not only do you make us a better rotation on the days that you start, but also on days when you don’t. I think Jon Lester, Clay Bucholtz, and Dice-K really have a lot they can learn from you. Its a special thing in baseball to turn down more money and show allegiance to a team, and we really appreciate it. Looking forward to another fun season!

  478. lakeshimmergirl Says:

  488. soxdiehard Says:

    Curt,

THANKS, dude! We’re all looking forward to next season. I’m happy that you and your family will be spending a lifetime with us.

There is another huge benefit to this which you may not yet realize. The weight thing. Take it very SERIOUSLY, man! I’m 50 now and up until the time I was 40, I never had to worry about it. I ate eveything and never got tired. By the time I was 45 I ballooned to nearly 240 lbs. In the last 3-5 years I came down with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

They immediately put me on the meds, which helped a little, but nothing made a difference until just this year when I have finally gotten back to 195 lbs. through a lot of miserable dieting and exercise. It really sucks, but you gotta do it.

At this point they have cut back the meds to the minimal amount and I appear to have gotten my life back. The only thing I do know that is bad for the old ticker is watching too many late night elimination games. LOL ;)

Just do it, dude. And not just for the upcoming season, but for the long haul. Your family will certainly be glad you did.

    Thanks again.

    Curt,

I’m glad you’re back. Now to re-sign Lowell and Timlin.

I love to see the haters come out to try and douse the celebration, simply because they’re haters and have nothing else better to do. I have a suggestion… Go onto a Yankees board and vent there, cry and weep there.

Curt, my kids were even excited when I told them you’d be in a Red Sox uniform next year and they are 10 and 6 years old, much smarter than these haters that post their diatribe because their team didn’t win the WS or make the playoffs even, or were bounced by Sox… bitter, bitter people need to go elsewhere to cry in their champagne, a la Ryan Garko.

I can’t wait, to see you pitch another postseason next year, re-signing the key people like Mike Lowell will only ensure that we get there again.

Congrats Curt, and let Theo know if he wants to give me $2M reason to lose a little weight, I’ll be down to negotiate! :)

    Good Luck and God Bless!

Congrats and, as a member of Red Sox nation old enough to remember the ‘67 team, thanks for sticking around. I am glad to see that the Sox finally have an ownership that REALLY wants to win! I firmly believe your leadership in the clubhouse is as important as your on field performance. Certain players have an intangible value above and beyond teh stats, and you are one those players. Welcome back!

Now all we need is Mike Lowell and we are set.

  493. pancho878 Says:

    Curt,

I don’t know why so many Red Sox fans think that the “weight clause” in your contract is ingenious, when as an “athlete” you are supposed to do that anyway! But, hey at least you saved some dough on an agent by representing yourself so at least that was good.

I am saddened and angered at the same time by this news. We in Philadelphia have pleaded with you to come back and bring us a championship. Then you turn your back on us and piss on our dreams!

    Thanks alot Curt!

    Curt,

It is really nice to here you are back in Boston for your final year in Baseball. I do have a question for you though? Please bear with me, and I am asking this question so that I can apply it to my business life and personal life as well. My personal opinion is that your success and the teams success is a direct result of the preparation and studing of your opponents and coming up with a strategy to maximize your strengths to your opponents weakness. My question is, what does the process look like for you not only in baseball but your business life as well that you do in order to acheive the level of success that you have had?

You’ve given us all a great present!

  499. sharples Says:

    Mr. Schilling,

The announcement of your signing made my day! What a great feel-good story amidst the normal greed and egos that usually accompany contract negotiations. This may have been your first free agency, but in my book you handled it like the pro that you are.

And added kudos for representing yourself during the process instead of resorting to blood-sucking agents…a useless species I have come to hate almost as much as the Yankees.

Lastly, I’d like to thank the author of Post number 411 above for reminding you why you chose to remain in Boston instead of returning to Philadelphia.

  500. troutman2 Says:

Great Job on your contract, a very wise move regarding the weigh in. As a Retired Mass. Special Investigator we had that yearly weigh in our contract also. That “Fat Money” as we called it paid our personal car insurances. With your will , drive and stamina to win, that should be a breeze for you, coupled with Nutri-System as an if needed “Closer”. Glad to have you cemented with the Sox for your final year. If you are looking for a great sport for your retirement, other than Golf, give me a shout for some Free Fly Fishing Lessons… Fly Fishing is all that the great kicker, Gary Anderson, does now with his family. Ok, I just don’t get it…Why does a professional athlete need a $2 million bonus to stay in shape? Isn’t that what a pro athlete is supposed to do uhh…stay in shape? Isn’t that what the $8 million is for?

Tomorrow, I think I will ask my boss for a bonus for coming in to work on time – subject to 6 random checks…

  502. rsoxnurse Says:

Thank you for all you do for baseball, the Red Sox, the fans, and your charitable work.

All the best to you and the fam – sounds like you have a busy travel and work sched coming up. Get some rest – 2008 is just around the corner.

I’m glad you staying with us. I had a feel that this year the Red Sox was going to win. My father was a real fan and he got me hook up on baseball and the Red Sox when I was a little girl. My father used to visit me every year during the summer but in 2004, he came in the fall and we both got to see you guys win the WS in 04. This year he passed away a day after father’s day.A couple a weeks after my father died I had a feeling you guys were going to win again, and I’m glad you guys did. My father used to tell me that you are a good pitcher Curt. He was a pitcher himself in Puerto Rico when he was younger. Well Thank you for making a good year for me after my big lost I know he is smilling down from heaven.

By the way please Theo needs to resign Lowell!!!!!! and tell the rest of the guys that we are all proud of them for the great work they did this year.

  514. mslori Says:

I just got done reading your blog (my first ever!) and had to tell you how I feel. When you signed on with the Sox a few years ago, my husband told me what a good thing this was. At that time I didn’t pay as much attention to the contract negotiations, free agent status, etc. Then I was driving to work and the radio station was interviewing this woman, Shonda Shilling. She had such wonderful things to say about this new team Curt would be playing for and how great the people were treating them, etc. I called my husband and told him what an awesome interview it was and how gracious she was. Which brings me to today, I just had to tell you how much class you have! You have always carried yourself with dignity on and off the field. Taken it all in stride, stood behind your team mates, and made me VERY proud to be a Red Sox fan! Thank you, for being such a class act!

  515. vermontmike Says:

    Curt –

So glad to have you back as a member of the Red Sox for your final season. I would have understood and respected a decision that brought you elsewhere, but it is fantastic to see someone in professional sports stay true to his word and make the right thing happen for himself and for his fans. Hats off to Theo, as well, for making the right decision.

I have four year old twins who are just beginning to grasp the concept of team sports. I can’t wait to have them watch you pitch next year and understand what it means to be a team player and not a mercenary who seeks nothing but a payday from the highest bidder. As Tony Maz said today, you have always backed up words with actions, and I feel good telling my kids to emulate guys like you, Tek, Papi and Lowell.

Thanks for the blog — it’s cool to read. And please keep after Theo to make us all happy and get Mike Lowell’s deal done. Looking forward to another parade in ‘08!

you schillings are such a class act.

i met you only once, curt, a million years ago in rochester when you were with the rochester red wings.

the day before opening day, several of us were out at old silver stadium to choose our season ticket seats (i manage a couple of radio stations- we broadcast the red wings). and not being able to decide, i asked this guy practicing on the field if he wouldn’t mind jumping into the stands to help us make the decision. that player was you. and you did it cheerfully. and we held those seats until they tore the stadium down.

you probably don’t remember it…but 20 or something years later, i still remember it…and remember how great a guy were were that day…and still are today.

curt, you’re much more than a great ballplayer…you’re a wonderful guy…and blessed with an incredible wife and family.

Curt, I’ve left a response for you already, so I don’t really care if this post ever sees the message board. But I wanted to write something that I hope you see or somone on your staff will get to you.

I wanted to thank you. Thank you for your integrity & your honesty. You said you wanted to stay in Boston, you said that was where you wanted to spend your final year & retire. You then did what was needed to help move along the process of staying in Boston. Personally, as a life long Sox fan, I am thrilled that you are coming back next year & am thrilled that you will retire as a Red Sox & hopefully go into the Hall of Fame as a Sox.

In this day & age when most professional atheletes are out for the money only, it is refreshing to see a player make the decision about where to play based on something other than soley money.

It can sometimes get disheartening as a fan to see players caring only about the money. At times I wonder if the players still have a love of the game, or just of the money that they earn.

Thank you for the kind of example you set for what the players in the REd Sox organization should be. The Sox are the best team in MLB & it’s my opinion that the Sox have the best players in MLB.

I am glad that you will continue to play in Boston & that you and your lovely wife Shonda will be continuing your good work through your charities and your work with ALS and for skin cancer. The example you set goes beyond your priority to your family & their needs first to the example you set through your charity work. The people who you work with will be forever grateful for your kindness.

I wish I lived close enough to see you pitch next year on the way to another World Series next year! Unfortunately, as a former New Englander now living in Idaho, I will be able to be at Fenway in spirit only!

    GO SOX!

Brains….courage….and most of all, a great big HEART! Thanks for the rainbow, Curt. There’s no place like home….there’s no place like home….I can’t wait to see you peering over your glove again next year!

    Love Ya!

  528. nsid1 Says:

Thank you for walking the walk – not just talking the talk. I was so sure you were gone. I couldn’t see the Sox spending $13 million on a pitcher over 40 who was on the DL for an extended period last year. Not that you don’t bring something to the team, but given what they have in the pipeline, this would not be money well spent. This appears to be the perfect solution for everyone – the money is there if you can meet the goals. Thank you for being so reasonable. As long as we can sign Lowell, we get to see this team mostly still intact in 2008 – and what fun that will be!! Can’t wait – thank you, thank you, thank you!

  529. nixr Says:

    Curt,

Congrats, Curt. I look forward to watching you pitch for another season here in Boston. They’re a better team with you on it and I’m glad you’re staying. CHB will have to wait another year before he can breathe easy again. You’re a hell of a guy and a hell of a pitcher.

    Sign Mike Lowell!

  530. babs765 Says:

    Curt,

We are so happy that you re-signed with the Red Sox. You are truly a leader on the team and need to retire as a Red Sox. The young pitchers on the team such as Bucholz and Lester will have a great advantage with you there as you will be able to guide them and give them many pointers, not just on pitching, but how to be a team player and to always give your best in a game and to the community. Thank you for making a deal that would allow you to finish in Boston. And we know you’ll be able to keep that weight off—you’ve proved you can handle any situation. Congratulations!!!

I will be in a deep depression if Lowell isn’t signed. SIGN LOWELL NOW!

  531. stepho1971 Says:

Glad to hear you will be back for another year. If you ever decide to run for office in MA, you have a lot of support in the Bay State. Enjoy the offseason!

That was a freakin RIOT!!! Are you sure you don’t work for the Herald?????

  533. adoniran Says:

Arod said a zillion times how much he loved the Yankees, and problably he will be gone next year, unless he cant get a deal anywhere else, them will be forced to lie for another year to the “beloved” bronx fans.

Damon left behind thousands of fans that loved him here, sold a nice home in Brookline, and for some insignificant extra cash from Steinbrenner, poor Damon sold his identity, even his bear, losing respect and another world series ring.

Curt; even some people keep saying that he gives too much information about his life and his ideas, proved being a man of dignity, giving priority to what is more important; Family.

    Thanks Schilling, we love you.

SWEEEEEEEET!!!!! Curt deep down I knew this would get done and you showed true loyalty above and beyond $ and cents. You took fair value which is uncommon these days. We all knew you would have got more years and morE $ in Philly but you chose here..bravo. To me I see sense in giving you a “wakefield” deal, cuz I believe you will post 16-8 3.67 which will want you coming back in 09. Curt thanks for stickin round for something special

  539. techsoldaten Says:

    Dear Curt -

You are the greatest, I love seeing you pitch and don’t care what CHB says about you. But I believe you did yourself and the Sox a disservice by signing back up.

Sure, you will help the team win, and certainly you stand to improve the quality of the pitchers around you. But so can Beckett.

You had the chance, if you wanted it, to become an embedded Sox with another team. You could have signed with the Yankees and immediately embarked on a program of binge eating combined with no exercise ever. You could have gone out there and gotten your lifetime ERA up to like 8 in a single season then hurt your back so you could never play again while still taking $100mil out of their payroll over 4 years. It would have been a win win win situation, where the Sox win because you give their batters nothing but hanging fastballs, you win because you get to do whatever you want because your contract is guaranteed and the Yankees deserve to lose, and the Yankees win because they get someone else to blame their failures on.

Here’s hoping you stay around another 5 years, we all know you have it in you.

  540. seagull35 Says:

Congrats Shill… As I said to my kids in ‘04, you surely give new meaning to the name “Red” Sox.

NOW, the thing we fans can look forward to is your final contracts after you “retire” from the mound, then, as a Red Sox Pitching Coach.

The kids coming up will benefit from your skills and your loyalty.

You are a credit to your family, your team and your fans. And still later, in your dotage, we will all be honored to see you sitting at the end of the bench, like Johnny Pesky, giving moral support to your team.

Congrats Curt…..it’s great to know that you are coming back! During your last appearance in the world series, nobody knew! We all asked “Is that it” for Schill?

    Curt its great your back!

Some people who comment here are nuts!

    “We dont want A-rod”….

HUH? This guy hit 54 homers and 150+ RBI’s.

Now Lowell is a great player , Probably second to best to A-rod.

If the Red Sox had a choice:

A-rod would come to them for a reasonable amount of money. GET HIM!!!!

if A-Rod wants crazy amounts like 17 million a year for 7 years (

    hey curt,

It makes me real happy that you are staying with the red sox. I really enjoyed watching you last season. The one-hitter in Oakland was a fun game to watch.

It also gives me a good feeling when you are on the pitching staff. I know you will deliver your best performance and that means a lot of wins for the red sox.

It’s great that you are staying in Boston I wish you the best!!!

    good luck.

P.S. Tell Theo that he should re-sign Mike Lowell for whatever money. He’s our World Series MVP. That’s priceless.

This is a special time for Sox Nation. I have been a fan for over 50 years and I must say what this ownership has done with the ball club and the Fenway is amazing. To be compete year in and year out for the playoffs is awesome. Best wishes and good health to you and your family.

    Curt,

I’m so grateful that you were able to come to a quick resolve over your next year. I SO wanted you to be able to retire as a part of the Red Sox Nation and family. The team and the fans owe you so much and your attitude about this has been outstanding. You are truly an asset to the team not just as a pitcher but as a veteran to continue to help mold the rotation and upcoming starters. I think you will be an integral part on working toward a repeat of the ‘07 season. Look forward to seeing you on th mound next year.

I didn’t know that the Phillies fans were so disappointed that you re stayed with the Sox. I guess they wanted you as much as we do. Being a die hard sox fan, I really appreciate the ardent fans of the old time teams like the Phillies, the Cardinals and the Cubs. Whenever the Sox aren’t in the playoffs I root for these old time teams to win it. I hope someday that the Phillies and the Cubs will win a world series. I’ve been to games in both cities, and their fans are wonderful. I’m a fan of the Red Sox, but more than that, I’m a fan of baseball. So I know now that the Phillies fan are disappointed and I wish them all the best.
