The Sox will issue an official announcement at some point today, but Theo said it was ok to post here so I am. We agreed to a 1 year contract late last night. Today was the MRI, which I passed.
Still trying to soak it all in.
The deal looks like this.
$8 million in guaranteed base salary
$2 million in bonuses for 6 seperate weigh ins.
I inserted the weigh in clause in the 2nd round of offers, counter offers. Given the mistakes I made last winter and into Spring Training I needed to show them I recognized that, and understood the importance of it. Being overweight and out of shape are two different things. I also was completely broad sided by the fact that your body doesn’t act/react the same way as you get older. Even after being told that for the first 39 years of my life. Now I can’t get on Dougie anymore, which sucks, and I am sure the clause will add 15-100 more jokes to Tito’s Schilling joke book.
$3 million in IP incentives based on IP totals.
$1 million for receiving a Cy Young vote, any vote.
Some miscellaneous things were agreed upon as addendums as well.
Any discussions about this will focus on many points, that will miss the point. Did I ‘leave’ money on the table, yes. Could I have gotten another year? I think so. In talking with my advisor Ed Hayes, assessing the market place and current free agent crop as well as existing contracts. Looking at the teams that called, my best guess would be around 14-15 million for a 1 year deal with the potential to get 25-30 for a two year deal. Shonda and I were very clear on this from the outset, we wanted no more than a year. We wanted to stay here. So while there will be points of debate, they’ll all miss the point. We got EXACTLY what we wanted, and then some. This is where we want our career to come to a close. This city, this team. This is where we want to retire, raise our kids, and walk away. We got it, all of it, and more. Did I get too little? Hell I would argue that one of the top 3 pitchers of all time just signed a 10 million dollar deal. Scott Boras could argue that one of his clients is certainly worth more than Maddux, I can’t. Actually he would be arguing that one of his clients is worth more than another of his clients right?
Bottom line is Mr Henry, Mr Werner, Mr Lucchino, Theo, Tito and John wanted me to come back, and I wanted to be back. So it’s all good. Saying it’s not ‘about the money” is a lie too. Both sides have a price, at some number I was not a viable option for the Red Sox, and at another number the Sox might have become a non-contender to us, but we both wanted this to happen and it did. Contrary to what some ‘insiders’ think they know, they don’t. Theo and I have an enormously respectful and friendly relationship and the same can be said for all three owners. As far as Tito goes, well I have too much dirt on him to ever worry about him selling out on me…..
I’d also like to say thank you to Ed Wade, Drayton McLane, Josh Byrnes, Bill Giles and the other GMs and owners I spoke with. The fans of St Louis were incredibly graceful and respectful in wanting me to come there. I didn’t get to truly experience the recruiting process of becoming a full fledged free agent, but I think that was for the better. It was also nice to talk with Ed again and know that we both harbor zero ill will about anything said or done over the last decade. The phans in Philly at the ALS tournament yesterday were also very respectful and considerate and it was nice to see that passion on display again. While I think many of those options would have provided a fun and exciting final season, in our heart of hearts Shonda and I knew that to go anywhere else would be leaving home, and I couldn’t bring myself to make that happen.
Theo and I spoke early in the week about wanting to complete this before the exclusive period ended, and the GM meetings began, because we both thought there could be a scenario popping up that might make this less desirable. He has to run this team, and I needed to do what was best and right for my family. Allowing external influences to change our opinions of each other might have been an unavoidable strain neither side wanted.
I’ve already heard from Josh and Wake, and am excited to know that my last year in the game will be with a team that has another legitimate chance to win the World Series. Also, the thought of being able to be teammates with this incredible group, for a final run is pretty damn cool.

What a happy ending (not quite, you still have to go win 20 games next year!). You did leave some money on the table, but it’s refreshing to see that this was not ALL about the money.
You are already in the top tier of Red Sox greats for making the Red Sox winners, both through your performances and your attitude. Choosing the team, the region, and your legacy over top dollar will just inch you up that much higher.
And I’ve found your blog posts during the brief postseason fascinating. I am of the opinion that you would be well served by filtering what you say a bit (that’s my gently way of saying you talk to much), but for every foot-in-mouth moment you also have provided a lot of insight to us fans about the game (and the business).

Curt- When I was at Game 2 of the World Series, I was telling everyone that I’d probably seen your last game as a Red Sox. I thought the moment that you walked off the mound was one of the best sports moments I have had the chance to experience live. Needless to say, I’m more than thrilled to be wrong.
I appreciated your insights into the free agent process, especially the 2003 letter from the Sox, but what I admire more is your unwavering allegiance to your word, something that I’ve grown accustomed to in reading your blog this year. In March, you were candid about what it would take the deal to get done, and you have kept that, as well as what’s best for your family in mind the whole time. Luckily, it seems it was a win-win situation for the Sox and for the fans of Red Sox Nation as well.
I think that your impact on the 2008 team, even more than your individual win-loss record, will be the mentoring you can provide for Daisuke, Clay, Lester, etc. I think that it is great that pitching icons like you and Maddux can be such mentors for the games newest pitchers.
Congratulations for such a speedy contract resolution. Enjoy the holidays and the offseason with your family.

So glad to hear that you will be back in 08′ to finish out what has been argueably a Hall of Fame career. The flood of emotions that I felt in 04″ have all resurfaced. All I can say is thank you from the bottom of my heart what you brought to our team and our city (and making my Grandfather eat crow- God rest his soul, lol, that the Sox would never win the big one- now it’s happened twice). The importance of your presence, along with the other veterans (Beckett, Wake, Timlin) to help along a young pitching staff that (has not only accomplished great things this year but) is destined for more great things upon the horizon.
Some wisdom you may already know: chill on the night eating, carrot and celery sticks are great, don’t eat out of boredom and even if you’re not motivated, get in your work out.
Thank you for the early Christmas present!

Schilling, Congratulations! Pitching depth wins championships and I think that you are part of that puzzle. I hope that you can stay in shape so that you will be effective all season. Well Curt good luck to you. This 39 year old still plays lots of ice hockey and baseball albeit not as efficiently as when I was 29 but hey …. it is about the sport when all is said and done.
Play as long as you can and have fun, as a fan I will enjoy watching. And yes keeping the extra weight off is difficult at our age but doable.

Although I am a life-long Padres fan, I’m also a big Curt Schilling fan. My dog is named Gwynn, but if I ever get another he might have to be named Schill. Anyway, I’m glad to hear that your back in Boston for your final year! I have loved your commitment to community and especially your work with ALS. I wanted to take the time to say “Thank You” for your continued work with ALS. Being someone with a form of Muscular Dystrophy, I love to hear about people of influence such as yourself, committing so much to a cause. Your efforts go a long way, not just monetarily speaking, but emotionally for people like myself who root for you each and every start because of what you stand for. Thank you for doing your part to fight ALS and your efforts go a lot farther than you may know. You give me and thousands of others with neuromuscular diseases hope that maybe someday there will be a cure for ALS and the 39 other forms of neuromuscular diseases. Man. Great news.
A fan never wants to follow up a great season for his favorite team by seeing his favorite players booted out the door (or chasing someone else’s money out of it, for that matter). For all the happiness the World Series Championship brought to us this season, watching you leave would have been a bitter draught.
You’ve been a credit to your team, your fans and this region ever since you put on the uniform. You’ve played no small part in bringing two championship trophies to Boston after many years of failure. I’ll be proud to see you step onto that Fenway mound one more season, regardless of next year’s outcome.

I was traveling during the World Series and watched you throw 82 gutsy pitches over a live internet feed from Bethlehem! Truly one of my top ten fan moments as a lifetime Bostonian.
I respect your pursuit of excellence each time you pitch, your dedication to your teammates, your love of technology, your commitment to “gaming” with your kids while on the road, and your devotion to the Lord Jesus.
I also admire how you approach the business side of baseball. I am weary of the culture of spin fed by the media, sport agents, and so many others. Your candor with the fans is refreshing.

Not only am I very pleased that you will end your career as a member of the Red Sox, I am equally pleased that you don’t have to uproot your family because it really looked like your children did not want to move away in the recent Globe article. Take the house off the market, and hit the gym!

What are your thoughts about the remaining Sox FA’s? Id like to see Hinske & Kielty back. I know Clement is gone and pretty sure about Gagne too. Im 90% sure Dougie will be back to catch Wake,depending on his role.

Being a 40-something man in roughly the same shape as you….it would be great if you posted on the blog your workout regimen and how you will be getting in shape.
I am forever trying to get in shape and seem to only get in shape when challenged by my friends and we all make non monetary or charity based wagers…
Even more intriguing would be to post a challenge maybe “Schilling’s Shape Up Challenge” where you would challenge other 40 something men to get in shape. It would be fun for all and might help things go smoother for you and for all who rise to the occassion.
Maybe proceeds to to your charities with the “winner” and their spouse and family having lunch or dinner or picnic or whatever with you and your family…say maybe at Spring Training….

Great news for one and all. Maybe we could have done without the goodbye letters to teammates and the newspaper articles explaining that, sigh, moving on is just ne of those things in the life of a ballplayer, but in the end, you and the Club demonstrated that you both meant what you said.
You (and your teammates, and the front office—including, to some degree, the last GM on the Yawkey/Harrington era)) have done so much to establish this team not simply as world champions, but as the best in baseball. Many times in the almost 50 years I have been religiously glued to this team I have felt we had a great team, but only this group—beginning the year you came over—has proven it, and the importance of your contributions can never be forgotten.
But there is something about retiring in a Red Sox uniform that adds to that, I think. It is something Roger Clemens will not have, nor Pedro Martinez, who both did so much for this team. Even Jim Lonborg, whose win over the Twins on the last day of the 1967 season led inexorably to your two championships in the same uniform, did not get to retire as a member of this team.
Yaz, Ted Williams (and John Havlicek, Bill Russell in another Boston uniform) had that honor and now you will, too. And in 2014, when we celebrate the tenth year of the first championship in more than a lifetime, you will be remembered for what you gave to the team that drafted you and to which you returned to seal the deal.
Congratulations to you and your family. I cannot wait for the season to begin again as you and the rest of the team try to do it yet again.

They have enjoyed so many wonderful moments watching you pitch and I have enjoyed playing ball with my kids after the games so they can pretend their you pitching in the World Series. I’ve come to realize that Boston’s outdoor sports teams share phenomenal business operating principles. Both the Red Sox and the Patriots find players who are as good off the field as they are on it. On that score, the Schilling family has been a fabulous addition to Boston’s sports history. Congrats Curt. I’m can foresee you putting up a 17-9 record, 3.82 ERA, and 201 innings in FY 08 and being in good position to earn $13-15 million in FY 09. Will they give you an extra million if you come to camp looking like Gabe Kapler?
What’s your feeling regarding the Hall of Fame? I would think you’re postseason numbers this year eliminate any doubt. If they are considering guys like Craig Biggio candidates for the HOF, than you should be a lock. There’s no comparison on who was more dominate or had a greater influence on the game during their career.

Can’t tell you how happy I am that you will remain with the Sox and retire as a Boston Red Sox. I couldn’t even begin to picture you in the uniform of another team. I will be forever grateful to you for the 2004 championship and you will always remain in my heart. I am not ashamed to admit that I sat on my bed and cried like a baby at the conclusion of the final game. I, along with many other Sox fans, was afraid that I would go to my grave without seeing my beloved Sox attain a World Series Championship. NOW I HAVE SEEN TWO….CAN YOU BELIEVE IT! I’ve always had a love/hate for you Curt, but I am very happy you will retire a Red Sox and hopefully go into the hall of fame as one. Not many players have embraced being a Red Sox the way you did and it made me so happy that you seemed to love and appreciate my beloved franchise as much as I and my fellow fans do. I just wish you hadn’t chosen to stump for Bush right after the 2004 win. You had to realize that a large portion of Sox fans would would be hurt and confused by your tainting our defining moment by aggressively supporting such a polarizing figure. I returned the Schilling jersey that I bought after the series, because of what you did. But you’ve done a great job here and I hope you continue to live your faith and not just use it as a smoke screen, like some presidents do.

Question: After you complete your 2008 season in Boston, and given that you publicly mentioned not wanting to move your children away from their schools and friends right yet, have you considered going into coaching or front office work in the Sox org? Pawtucket to begin with? In other words, do you see your post-player years still involved with an MLB team, or in broadcast commentating such as Gwynn, or in developing youth organizations such as Ripken?

This is fantastic! I had complete faith in the Sox that this would get done. We will re-sign Lowell, too. The evil empire will make a run at him, and drive up the cost, but I think the Nation’s leaders know how vital he is to this team. I know Schill can’t answer this right now, but I wonder, did the Sox give him any re-assurances about their commitment to Lowell to help entice Schill to stay?
Don’t care to see Mirabelli go anywhere either. Remember, Wake looked a little lost in ‘06 when Mirabelli was gone the first two months of the year.

Congratulations Curt! VERY glad you made this decision. I think it shows incredible maturity and wisdom to make a decision that actually makes you happy. Hopefully this sets you up for your eventual post-baseball playing life too. GREAT job.
Of course it would be interesting to get a better idea about what could have happened at the GM meetings to make this decision less desirable. Your comment is so vague it is possible to imagine almost anything. This could range from another player signing a contract that would put these negotiations in a different light, to another team making a larger offer to you, to members of the press (for example CHB — who is really a disgrace, btw) conducting a negative campaign, to a negative annoucement coming out about you (such as HGH — I would find that hard to believe), to A Rod saying he didn’t want to sign with the Sox because he is not a fan of yours (if so, a big thanks to you from Red Sox nation). It seems from your comment, that you and Theo had a specific scenario in mind — was wondering if you could shed light on your concerns.
Regardless, Congratulations. My family and I are really happy you will be playing with the Red Sox for the rest of your career.

I am so glad Theo didn’t take a stance about signing a pitcher over 40. You have meant so much to this team and your role over the last few years and next year goes beyond pitching. I am a few years younger than you and I definitely understand about the weight, but I don’t get paid millions to play baseball, unfortunately -) But of course that doesn’t make it any easier to take weight off and to keep it off after a certain age, and it doesn’t make someone superhuman. How does Tim Wakefield stay in such great shape? Maybe he could help

I just wanted to add that I would hate to see you go into politics (as some people are suggesting here), nooooo. I am of a different political mindset than you are in many areas, but that has nothing to do with my opinion. It’s such a negative, cutthroat business-and how much does it ever really manage to accomplish? Your talents are with your charitable work, in my humble opinion. I wish you would stay with that and with 38 Studios.

I want to commend you on your leadership and straight-forwardness in your dealings with the Red Sox. Many players would look to get the most money and years out of whatever team is willing to pay the most and guarantee the most years. Players like Pedro Martinez and Roger Clemens (pitchers that are your contemporaries and who I feel you will someday join in Cooperstown) have always chased the buck and pretend its about respect and not about the money. We all know that is bologna and its ONLY about the money with them. Funny thing is, they never respected their teams and previous ownership back. The media always seems to say that you are a guy who always seeks the headlines and want to “make a splash”. The ironic thing is that they say all this crazy s**t so that they can make the headlines in their media outlet on your behalf and thus “make the splash”.
The facts are that you realize you are financially strong and seem to enjoy playing baseball, you take your families feelings and opinions strongly in your decision making and act accordingly to what is best for your family. Not many players, check that….not many PEOPLE consider these things when dealing with their choices in life. I also highly respect your dealings with your friends. In the case of Mike Lowell. Mike seems to be the (pardon the expression) “The Quieter Version of Schilling”. He is a leader and a clubhouse presence who goes out and leads by example much like yourself. Nice to see people actually sticking up for their friends rather than quietly sitting back and letting things just happen.
Finally, you might think this odd, but I sit back and think about some of the roadblocks I face in life in dealing with my finances, family life, and personal security and always ask myself “I wonder what Schill would do in this situation?” Have I weighed both sides and considered all the people’s opinions that are involved in a particular issue. What will the consiquences be towards my family and peers if I choose this path as opposed to the other? Does everyone involved realize that what I say is truly what I mean? Sometimes I think I might be the only one who thinks this way….you prove that I am not the only one.
I wish you the best in 2008 for you and your family and all that you do. You truly are the definition of what a Champion is and should strive to be! Stay healthy and keep doing what you do! I have a funny suspicion that you will be playing for another World Series in 2008.

If you were not with us next year, I would have believed that the Boston Red Sox management /ownership team was nothing but a group of money-making, profit driven, bottom line fanatics without heart or soul.
Putting aside your God given and self improving talent, not mentioning your intensity and passion for the game, and ignoring the blood on your sock that washed away an 86 year curse, I could have NEVER watched a Red Sox game again with the same fervor, excitement, and love if you didn’t finsh out your baseball career here in Boston.
I know you had better offers but I want to believe your spirit, like mine, is with Boston and its fans that love you.

That’s great news! You are one of those rare few who have joined the Sox later in their careers, but nonetheless have become part of the Boston family. Honestly, this comes as a very pleasant surprise.
Like many others, I appreciate you putting in a good word about resigning Mike Lowell. He turned out to be one of the best trade acquisitions in Red Sox history. My Red Sox memory goes back to Ted Williams last year with the team, and I fully believe that your performances in 2004 and then again when it was do or die time this year, where as gutsy as anything else I have seen.
I’m also happy that your family gets to stay put and enjoy life in a wonderful part of the world.
Enjoy your off season. I hope to get a chance to see you and the rest of the guys in the pre season in Florida.

Well Curt, you’re back for the final year of an incredible baseball pitching career:
There aren’t many people that recognize what they want to do and what is important to them, and then do it regardless of outside influence or opinion.
I’m glad to see you made the right decision for you. You are one of many of the “new breed” of Americans that take what they knowingly recognize is less than fair market dollar value in order to exercise their right at achieving acceptable levels of income blending other life values.
It is in my view another sign of your respectable charecter, and will contribute to your legacy. It is your contributions as a man of charecter that happens to play baseball that I will forever refer to when recanting events and teaching my children and grandchildren about baseball.
Well done in managing all of the issues affecting your difficult decisions.

Can you get your arm strength up in the off season so you can throw consistently at 91-94 MPH ??
I noticed in your one hitter you were throwing that hard in the 9th inning. I also predicted you may get injured shortly thereafter. (Clay got injured too)
I think running competively puts similiar stress on the body as pitching does and because of this, I have lots of ideas of how to improve pitching performance.
The post season pitching performances were great because pitchers were rested properly. Tito had the foresight to plan properly. Why not apply the same ideas in mid season. We will have 6 starters and Julian Tavarez.

Good on you for getting this done, with reasonable accommodations. You and Wakefield are are really personifying what is good about baseball. Those that say you should have gotten more money elsewhere do not get the point. I got it.
Now, go have a meeting with Mr. Epstien, Lucchino, Henry, and Werner, and talk to them about bringing Mike Lowell back. The last time this happened (similar, although not the same), we lost Cabrera (does he kill us every time we see him or what), and classy Bill Meuller (he did have bad knees, but a stand up guy). At least with Mikey, we don’t have to worry about off-field distractions that are of his own doing, and EVERYONE says hes a good person (and a hell of a 3rd baseman).
Glad you’re here Curt, and you will be in that group of Boston Heroes (Bird, Bourque, Orr, and yes, Brady)……

I am very happy that you will be returning to the Red Sox. Matsuzaka got 15 wins this year with 4.40 ERA. My realistic prediction for your future:
3.6 ERA, 180 IP, 16 wins in the regular season. 2 more postseason wins to bring you winning percentage up to 86.7% and the fourth championship ring. HOF in 2015 (assuming Maddux and Glavine will make it hard for you in 2014). Rest assured, all of Red Sox Nation and its machine will be behind you to get you into HOF. Congratulation for the 2008 season with the Red Sox!

Great to hear! Congratulations to you and the family. I’m sure it feels good to know you will be here for the long term, and can continue to build on the great foundation you have laid over the past few years here.
Regarding Lowell, I say Crisp gets dealt, and Ellsbury a starter (very insightful, I know). Hopefully that leaves the funds to have some reasonable CF backup support in the dugout or on the PawSox, and give Lowell the deal he needs to stay. I said it on a prior post – this is offense and defense for the Sox, and keeping him off the Yankees, making them pay dearly for A-Rod or find a ‘2nd tier’ replacement as compared to Lowell/A-Rod, is precisely what we want! With pitching set for a while, this is a reasonable scenario now.
I guess Lowell always could head to NY and have a tough transition like Damon, but I’m not willing to count on that, nor would I wish that on such a great player.

Quite a classy contract that shows both the team’s commitment and your accountability. The fact that you did it so quick shows that when the middle man is eliminated good people can come together and look at what’s best for both sides. You are a Red Sox through and through. From the day you were drafted to the day you will retire.
More importantly, your commitment to non-profit causes is a wonderful example to the industry, the team, your fans, the community and other players at how critical it is for all of us to give back.
Have a great night in Springfield. My 82 year old mother is a huge fan of yours and lives in that area. She will have a smile on her face. She never thought she would see one World Series. Now she has two and your commitment to shoot for a third is a gift to all of Red sox Nation.
The only problem with mom is she will only wear the Lowell shirt. He has her heart.

In the past forty years, I have seen many highs and lows. But the past four years have been most enjoyable. After a long season, hardly never missing a game, I go through a period of Red Sox withdrawl after the season is over, and then dread the changes that are yet to come. Congratulations Curt, and I hope you can breathe a sigh of relief, relax for a few months, and enter the offseason with a clear head. I suppose you may be toning up a bit over the winter..if so, how much easier it will be knowing you’ll be reuniting with your great teammates.
Thank you for the candid disclosure of your contractual arrangements and the thought processes you and Shonda brought to this difficult decision. It’s so refreshing to hear that the money isn’t the only consideration in any business decision; I think the fact that you’re staying here may reward you many times over in future years; whether in product endorsements; local honors; etc. and it’s great that the team is equally interested in keeping franchise players that will shape the history of the Red Sox organization for years to come.

This is great news Curt!
Glad to see that Red Sox Management didn’t repeat what in my humble opinion were mistakes with not resigning some of the key pitchers after the 2004 World Championship Team. Which leads me to a joke to make my point; How do you make the playoffs in the American League? Start with a World Champion Team and over play the money ball thing with free agents of dubious repertoire.
Best wishes to you and your family Curt and I’d be remiss if I didn’t salute your openess about your feelings on resigning in Boston as well as providing us a peek at the negotiation process.
For those of you wondering what uniform Curt will wear for his induction to the HOF, I believe its determined by which team the player spends the most time in the majors with, and in Curt’s case that would be the Phillys by a considerable margin. Hope I’m wrong as I’d like see him with the Sox. At any rate Curt’s induction would be remiss if there wasn’t a prominent display of his historic pitching appearances in the 2004 post season, bloody Sox and all!!!!

I find myself at work in tears knowing that you will be back in 08. I have followed your career and have been an honest to god fan of you. The feeling of butterflies enters my stomach when you release a pitch. You seem to amaze me every time you play. I am a huge Red Sox fan but over all i am a huge baseball fan. I live in Arizona and I was blessed with you here with the Diamondbacks. As a Red Sox fan you made my life even better by moving to Boston. I enjoy talking baseball with father. He talks about the past and the magic of the game. He values baseball for the sport and what it has brought to our family. When the name Curt is brought up at our house you are under the talks of the greatest. Thank you Curt for being this humble and amazing man, and over all an amazing Baseball player who pitches! What you have done in your career will have me talking to my children and great grandchildren to come. I hope to make to Fenway when you Pitch next season and i hope to meet you. Congratulations. Just several days ago on NESN Bob Ryan and Dan Shaughnessy were smug, certain and derisive about your chances of coming back to The Red Sox. I think they actually said “don’t let the door hit you on the way out”, and also that you had “alienated both Theo and Lucchino”, a rare two-fer.

Curt, as capricious as the free agent world is and the veracity of all the would be free agents, agents, it is absolutley awesome to see you negotiate without a Boras or someone else. It is always my pleasure to read your blog. Today is a reason for the RED SOX nation to truly be celebrating. I am convinced this is not just a year filled with ” last time ovatons” but a year full of big games pitched. That is why you re-signed here. You are still very competitive. You are now a leader. Sure when younger you made some mistakes, mostly rubbing some the wrong way that in truth probably needed to be, but you are one of a kind. A Hall of Famer, who’s number will indeed be on the right fireld wall someday and more importantly, a legacy will be left for all of the work you and your wife have done and continue to do. In many lives of the less fortunate you are the MVP of all time. Thank you for coming back, I know there were many other teams willing to give you 25-30 million for two years, no doubt. So glad to have you back Curt, and glad you guys got it worked out quickly. It just wouldn’t be right if you didn’t finish your career in Boston!
I know you say it isn’t about the money, but I am happy to see that at least some players are willing to take a pay cut to stay and play the game in a town and with a team that they love. Bronson did it prior to the ‘06 season and I’m still mad that Theo traded him away just a month or two later… I’m sure he had his reasons, but I was so overjoyed at seeing a player who truly was in it for the love of the game, the team, the city, and the fans… not for the money. I’ve always respected you as a player and as a person, thank you for allowing me to continue to hold that opinion of you.
Now, off to the gym with you… gotta make sure you stay in shape and maybe even get that velocity up a couple of mph (so I read somewhere).
And starting working on Theo to make sure we resign Mike Lowell!!! It be great if you could give us any inside updates on that which you may have.

Congrats on the deal and hopefully you use the weight clauses as incentive during the off season to shift your diet and exercise habits toward a more healthy body shape. Guys who gather weight around the middle live shorter lives than those that don’t.

Welcome Back Curt!! Im pumped for next year’s season, even though this one just ended! Definitely think we need to resign Mike Lowell. Im glad the options got picked up on Wake and Tavares as well. Alot of ppl underestimate Tavares, but he made alot of quality starts when Lester was finishing up rehab. I think that was very key and he’ll round out the bullpen nicely next year. Anyways, GO SOX!!

I am a 48 year old former gym rat I know the struggle to stay in shape after 40. Working out used to be almost a religion, now it’s a chore. I find the hard part to be mental. I have to force myself to get to the gym.
I have to be honest though. A 2 million dollar incentive would have me sprinting to the gym (and it’s 10 miles away). Just kiddin’!
You’re an honest and sincere athlete and person. I saw true humble as you left to mound as the fans cheered in your WS appearance.

It’s an honor to have you back in uniform. Now that you’re part of the 40+ crowd, maintaining ones’ weight is as simple as this, You can eat anything, just not a lot of anything. It takes discipline to pass up food but in the words of Cindy Crawfords’ mother, “It takes as much work to look good as it does to look bad.” True and to the point. Moderation is the key. Another dirty culprit is sugar, once you lay off this substance you’ll feel amazing and realize how nasty sugar is to your system.
Now have that adivsor of yours go out and get some additional moola for you by doing a commercial for Dunkin Donuts. Just don’t eat those friggin’ donuts, those things are fat pills, instead drink some of their coffee and say “This is wicked pissah coffee.” There are plenty of local establishments that could handsomely pad your wallet like Legal Seafoods or the Boston Beer Company. Praise Legals’ ‘chowda’ or take a drive ova to a packie to pick up some Sam Adams ‘beah’. After fours years in Bawstin, the accent must be growing on you and the family:)

As a season ticket holder and as a longtime red sox fan, it is so nice to see that you will be back for another season. In a time when society has devalued the concept of loyalty, it is nice to see that you and ownership both agreed to make this happen. Could they have gone another route and saved a few bucks…sure. And could you have gotten more money some place else….absolutely. But when both parties are willing to say there are some things more important than money…that we have a great thing going here, and we want you to share in it and be a part of it, then that should be enough to get a deal done. I am glad it did. It makes me proud to be a fan of you and this team.
And I am so glad you, Shonda and the kids will be sticking around even after you retire. Promise me that some day you will bring your kids back (and grand kids) and show them where their dad or grandpa played some of his finest baseball. And be sure to point up into the rightfield rafters and show them your number retired. I know I will be doing that and recalling some of those great moments… and how I got to see Curt Shilling play for the Red Sox and bring home the trophy!

Curt, i haven’t posted here much but i do “lurk” here often and try and read much of what you blog. First and foremost i want to THANK YOU for delivering us to the “promised land” in both 2004 & 2007. i know that winning championships as a player must be the ultimate joy, but in all honesty i can’t imagine feeling better than i did when you and the boyz won it in 2004. You were a HUGE part (obviously) of winning that WS and for that i will always feel pride for you. You stepped up again during this most recent WS run and it was fun seeing you popping champagne like a kid.
That being said, i am very happy for you and your family that you get to finish your career on your terms and where you want to. i think you’ve earned the right to do that. but as we know baseball is big business so it’s nice to see that it happened this way for you.
As for “leaving money on the table” – I see it this way – you didn’t “whore” yourself out to the highest bidder like some other pitchers have (see: clemens). You made a choice for you and your family that wasn’t based solely on $$$. And you know what? – that also makes me proud to see you step on the field in a RS uniform for one more go at it.
PS – i know players don’t get to “choose” anymore what hat they were in the HOF, but i think you should go in with a Red Sox hat….
PPS – you may actually have to be nice to a writer to get that 1 Cy Young vote this coming year!

I was so Happy to see you will be retireing in a Red Sox uni I came to see the victory parade in 04 all the way from las vegas on the red eye the night before . I landed and made my way downtown to see the man we brought in to bring us to glory finally . For you to make that happen was I cant put into word’s but now having two in 4yrs I just wana say your the man curt you ever need anything in vegas you look me up . I’ve been a Sox fan since birth (1951) and my Dad was fortunate to see his Sox win the world series in 2004 just before his passing.
It is humbling to hear from you the respect you hold for the Red Sox organaization. It makes me proud to be a fan and even more proud to have a class guy like Curt Schilling on the team.
With free agency, loyalty to a team and to its players has become non-existent and I miss the old days when guys like Ted Williams and Yaz used to iron out contracts one on one with Mr. Yawkey in the office with a hand shake. I know we will not revert back to those times but announcements like this comes close.
Now if the Sox and Lowell can agree to terms, I’ll be one proud happy camper!!! He too seems like a class individual.

back when you first signed with the Red Sox, I was 100% sure that Theo had lost his mind. Never have I been so wrong, you are a 100% class act when it comes to being a leader and an inspiration to the Red Sox and as a member of our community.
After the 07 Series when you posted your possible goodbye, I was ranting to everyone I knew to let the front office know who they felt about you. As fans we dont have alot to say about the business decisions that are made, we should not, however, Red Sox nation wanted to show as much support to you and you have for us. Thank you for working out the kind of deal that was a no brainer for the Sox, and there is no doubt in my mind that you will reach every incentive.

curt, i am so relieved you are back for one more year. i know in the end you still got “paid” but doing what you did with the pay structure is only going to help the sox get some more arms (another oki, anyone?). thank you.
it is so good to know that there are guys in professional sports like yourself and tim duncan. guys who are willing to restructure your contracts to make the overall team better. these are the stories that should rule the sportswire. a-rod just makes me ill. he needs to take a lesson from a three-time champion like yourself.

We had a very good friend who died of ALS – we walk in his honor each year wearing a picture of him with his Bosox cap on! My husband and I are very impressed by your devotion to the cause.

Curt, I am psyched to see you coming back! As a 41 year old athlete myself, I couldn’t agree with you more about how our bodies don’t respond nearly as good as when we were 10 years younger. I recently went on a low fat, high protein diet and it really does work. Cut out the fat and exercise and your body will respond favorably. Imagine retiring from this game by being in the best shape of your life? It can be done if you focus from now until spring training. I am certain you are tired from the long season but look at it as giving back to your body. Eating well and doing cardio and strength exercises will replenish your body. You might not have all the strength that you once had, but believe me, you are a smarter pitcher, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you don’t give us 200+ innings and 15+ wins. Heck, who knows, maybe 20 wins. That will depend on your conditioning and nutrition. I am hopeful for a great ending to an already outstanding career! Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

I was afraid that Game 2 of the WS was the last time I would see you in a Red Sox uniform, but thank God you proved me wrong. With a rotation of Beckett, you, Dice-K, Wake, and Lester, with Buchholz ready also, I see more good things on the horizon next year. Your leadership is an invaluable commodity in today’s day and age of selfish, spoiled-rotten athletes. I’m so glad you’ll be staying in New England, the best place in the world. Thank you, Curt, for what you have done and what we hope you will do in ‘08. If you can teach impart half of your knowledge to some of the young’uns on the staff next year, your salary will be MORE than worth it, even if you don’t throw a pitch all year.

First of all a Big Congrats and welcome back.
I hope you read this, Me and my wife have been very big fans of you and the redsox, Just to give you a background. Married in 2000 my wife WAS a yankee fan “yep I did Marry her, however in 2004 we sat down and watched the AL Championships and #1 were very impressed at you and your commitment to the game, Basically you could say you gave your ankle for the redsox and Baseball “the Fans” It was in game #4 I had finally got her converted. We both are very passionate about baseball. Our apartment is basically all decorated in redsox and schilling. We have named our dog ” Schilling” I know its crazy but you have the spirit in baseball and that dog sits down and watches each game with us. She gets very confused when you pitch and when they announce your name. Our christmas’s since then have alway include the Redsox. Last year we even went to the extent of our christmas tree being all redsox, with a santa on top with a redsox symbol and bat and glove. Well we have a 20X20 photo of fenway with picture of you ,Varatek, Papi and Manny and now Dustin. We are in hopes this year will be our first at fenway and hope to see you pitch. It seems every year we try to get tickets but because of work or not able to purchase them successfully we miss the oppourtunity, but with our apartment set up like it is we live the redsox each night you play. IN closing, a big thank you to you and your wife for staying in Boston. It was honorable of you to stay at the price as you are worth it and more. I can’t say enough about you as an individual and a pitcher. You’ve set the standard for the Red Sox organization, Red Sox Nation, and the sport. I want to pass on a short story: in 2004, a friend of mine lost her mother and, her son a grandmother on Labor Day Weekend. To get away from the situation and after making arrangements for their mother/grandmother for her funeral, we journeyed to Fenway as they both wanted to get out of town and have some fun. You provided that on that day as you pitched well against the Rangers and loghtened our load that day. I want to thank you for that personal memory and the others you’ve given over these years.
Thank you for showing what counts in life and in employment, its not just the money. Thank you for finiishing your career where yoy started and, we plan to journey to Cooperstown again (as we did in May 2005) but this time when you are inducted!! Bravo!! tcelt

Excellent! What a powerful, clutch rotation for 2008! With your arm and your brains the smart money is on a Nolan/Roger renaissance season. Congratulations Curt. Very happy that Boston is still your home. I hope it always will be. I started my weigh ins on Saturday plus a new exercise regime. I guess I got a little out of shape in October watching late night baseball (that I LOVED every moment of) while struggling to get up and work the next morning. I’m right there with you in spirit. Have a fantastic 08. ST will be here before we know it and after some agonizing glacial spells and deep snow storms I sure.

This is exactly what I said in your post after you posted the letter. Get ten mil gauranteed, which with the weight thing is exactly what you did, and what I alluded too. That way you both have no risk if your healty by loading it with incentives. If you have an incredible year, they perhaps get you at a steal. Like if your 18-10 with 200 plus strikeouts and get like 10 votes for cy, or something like that or better. Than they make out. If you have a year like last year, which is you do well, but not incredible, and you are in shape you will probably be like 13-7 or something. Which is great you make $10 mil, which is arguably what that is worth maybe a touch more, if your in shape and go 8-8 or something, then its very fair maybe a bit more beneficial for you. But legacy is important and going in the Hall wearing a sox hat is nice!
Congrats, you in shape at 42 is better than most anyone at any age. Ps, get in the gym and work that arm and shoulder to hit 95 again. Age is bullshit, its all about health. Recoop time, is just an accumulation of injury and lack of commitment to come back which keeps it lower. I want 15 wins, and see you hitting 94 95 now and then, and 3 playoff wins or more!

Today was a good day in Red Sox Nation with the news of your signing and Youk winning a Gold Glove.

It’s great to see a professional athlete really prioritizing his family, teammates, and fans over his bottom line. Of course, you’ve already made a boatload of money in this game, so I don’t think it’s fair for anyone to use this contract to make other guys look bad by comparison; but it’s certainly refreshing to see anyone in modern pro sports actually stand behind his, “I love this town – it’s not about the money, ” rhetoric instead of just using it as a marketing gimmick.
Thanks so much for coming back to the Red Sox. If they don’t retire your number in 2009, every single person in the Nation is going to let management hear about it. So far, you’ve won us two world championships, and I think that you had as much to do with the latest as you did with the greatest. I’m sure John Farrell deserves all the credit you’ve given him for the performance of the young pitchers, but I can’t imagine how Papelbon, Buchholz, and Delcarmen could have all flourished so early in their major league careers without daily access to you, a pitcher who’s compiled more knowledge about pitching to today’s hitters than just about any other active player (and, it must be said, who loves to vocally demonstrate that knowledge as much as you do).
I hope you stay in the game for a long time to come, whether it be as a player, coach, or manager. Welcome back.

Glad to have you back Curt.
As an athlete myself and a long time fan of the Red Sox, one of the most enjoyable parts of the past season was watching ‘the team’. In this day and age, it is refreshing to watch a group of professional athletes who are out there working hard, supporting each other, and competing amongst themselves. Competing because you don’t want to be the one that let’s everybody down. Competing and not trying to prove yourself better than a teammate, just worthy of being a teammate.

This is great news!! Although I agree that we should sign ML, I wanted to sign you as much. I’ll be forever grateful for what you did in 2004 and think that you are a uniquely great guy to have on the team. You seem to have a huge heart. And I’ve heard the younger pitchers talk about how you influence them.
I’ve been a Red Sox fan since I was a little girl growing up in Portland, Maine — listening to baseball on the radio with my dad, before we had a TV.
As I wrote in the Win it For Book, I just wish that he could have been alive to see these wins.
You and your family are great citizens in so many ways.

You are a great example for younger ballplayers and your presence in the clubhouse in 2008 will be an inspiration for those young guys.
I realize that you have to do what is best for your family and even if would have chose to leave us, you would never find this fan “booing” when your name is announced and I will always wear my “Schilling” Red Sox shirt with great pride.

Curt, when the World Series was over I really didn’t imagine having you back for next year. I’d figured you’d ride off into the sunset, get 13+ million a year in Philly or elsewhere, and play out your last season because I didn’t think you’d go for a incentive laden contract. I’m glad that you did. When you take the mound, whether you have your good stuff or mediocre, you battle. You tip your hat to the ump, whether he had a good strike zone or bad, and end your day like a gentleman should. Some say you speak too much, but I’m not one of them. You are what a athlete should be; Upfront, honest, and humble all in one. You admit your faults, and for that, include clauses to earn the money that you want by making sure you stay on the top of your game in the offseason. Thank you for being a honest athlete, one who puts in a good six-seven innings, and is there afterwards to admit he sucked, or that things went good. We don’t need Alex Rodriguez in the clubhouse, we need Mike Lowell, another hard working good guy. Theo, if your reading his blog, SIGN MIKE LOWELL! He’s worth every dollar.

10. I remember the excitement in November 2003 when it was anounced you were signed. The Sox had come so close to beating the Yankees that fall. Now, with Theo, it looked like management had finally figured out that great pitching wins championships, and that a personal appeal to you over the holiday was in order. With the thought of you and Pedro as our aces, the remainder of our Thanksgiving weekend was spent giving thanks we could spend our winter, spring, summer and fall with the near certainty of winning it all in 2004.

As parents with a very young ALS patient we cannot thank you enough for all you and Shonda have done for ALS patients and their families, you are both very dear to our hearts. You have given so much of yourself in so many ways and we just want to say “thank you”. Some days it is hard to find something to be happy about, but I will always cherish seeing a father and son together watching the Red Sox win the World Series. I know it is customary on this blog to leave messages for you G38. And I would like to say I think it is very cool that I will once gain be entertained on 32 nights by your competitive performances and amazed on countless other days by your quotability, sometimes for the good and sometimes not as much so. Most off all I am grateful that you wanted to play for the team I have come to love as much as I as a fan wanted you to. But if I may I would like to share my thoughts to my MB community regarding today’s events with you and the visitors to 38 Pitches.

Curt Schilling IMHO really worked with the RS on this deal. If Curt wasn’t his own agent this deal just like the “Thanksgiving Accord” probably would not have happened. And in this case Schill’s attachment and affection for the team, his teammates, the market and his private life in the region all made a difference IMHO.
Now even for a guy who has earned a LOT of money, Curt probably left a couple of MILLION dollars under the table if he worked his FA with Scott Boras aggression. That’s a lt of cabbage folks.
And speaking of a lot of money $2M to watch your waist line is a hell of an incentive (beats the daylights out of Richard Simmons tapes as a motivator). Any way whoever bets against a motivated Curt Schilling achieving any goal is fool hardy, so I’d venture to say Curt was glad to throw this in for two reasons:
One, he now recognizes that his fitness program must change to match his life changes. And let’s not forget why Curt continues to play. He is a bright guy (even if as a public figure he hangs himself out at moments) and will have a bright if not brilliant second career. He wants to play for his legacy not a paycheck. That incentive is a goal of his to ensure he does that IMO and therefore it was a brilliant choice.
And as fans perhaps of great importance to us, he wants to play for the RS and for the fans of RS Nation. That’s special in an era where management sells you that the name on the back of the jersey is irrelevant and the sport agent tells the player the name on the front of the jersey is irrelevant. On a brilliant day, both matter and that made today a brilliant day.
Whatever the case this worked out wonderfully for the RS for 2008. And most of all I am LMAO tonight at CHB, who in all his pomp-ass stupidity went on NESN and declared that he knew Schilling was done as a RS because both LL and Theo were fed up with Schill. While I doubt it, leaving the supposed sports expert with egg on his face might have been worth a couple of million to Curt.
Whatever the case there are no bad one year deals in this industry and this one just made the RS so much deeper come to 2008. But most of all there is just something right about Curt Schilling finishing his career in a RS uniform. Tip your cap tonight to 38 for being willing to compromise a lot of money and the cache that the value of an MLB contrcat brings to a player.
Now on to the 3B, getting a deal with the 1B through his arbitration years and giving Tito an extension worthy of his accomplishments.

Dan Shaughnessy and the Boston Globe finalized a one-year, $80,000 extension to his contract.
According to Shaughnessy , who first posted the confirmation on his web site, the deal includes a possible $60,000 in incentives in addition to his $80,000 base salary: $20,000 in “stupidity” incentives (based on his next six articles), $30,000 based on factually-correct articles published, and $10,000 if he receives even a single supportive email from a Globe reader.
Shaughnessy , who made $130,000 in 2007, added that the “stupidity” clause was added by him, not the Globe.
“I inserted the ’stupidity’ clause in the second round of offers, counter offers,” Shaughnessy wrote. “Given the mistakes I made last winter and into spring training I needed to show them I recognized that, and understood the importance of it. Being a smart-aleck and an idiot are two different things. I also was completely broad sided by the fact that your mind doesn’t act/react the same way as you get older. Even after being told that for the first 39 years of my life. Now I can’t get on Tony [Massarotti] anymore, which sucks, and I am sure the clause will add 15-100 more jokes to Schilling’s CHB joke book.”
The final step of the deal, according to Shaughnessy , was an IQ test, which he said took this morning and passed…barely.
Shaughnessy wrote that he thought he could not have earned more money or gotten a longer deal elsewhere.
“Did I ‘leave’ money on the table, no. Could I have gotten another year? I don’t think so,” he wrote. “In talking with my ‘wingman’ Amalie Benjamin, assessing the market place and current crop of bloggers as well as existing contracts. Looking at the papers that called — not that the Herald even called — my best guess would be that I’d be lucky to get a guest-blogger gig on mlbtraderumors.com.”
Shaughnessy did, however, say that money played a role in his decision.
“Saying it’s not ‘about the money’ is a lie too,” he wrote. “Both sides have a price, at some number I was not a viable option for the Boston Globe, and at another number the Globe might have become a non-contender to me, but we both wanted this to happen and it did.”
Shaughnessy , who turns 41 on Nov. 14, wrote 15 smartmouth editorials about Curt Schilling during the regular season. In the postseason, he left reality completely in the dust by claiming on NESN that Schilling had mounted a “pathetic campaign” to be resigned and that the Red Sox front office had wearied of him, and that he “shouldn’t let the door hit him on the way out.”
“Bottom line is Mr. Henry, Mr. Werner, Mr. Lucchino, Theo, Tito [Francona] and John [Farrell] all wanted me to show up in the trunk of one of Manny’s cars, but I wanted to be back,” Shaughnessy wrote. “So it’s all good.”
With Shaughnessy back in the fold, the Globe reporters for 2008 appears set with Amalie Benjamin, Gordon Edes, Amalie Benjamin, Nick Cafardo, Amalie Benjamin, Steve Silva, and Amalie Benjamin.
The return of Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling was also a factor for Shaughnessy when deciding where to write in 2008.
“Schilling is a huge part of the equation, not just for me either,” Shaughnessy wrote in an e-mail on Friday. “He’s as overrated as anyone I’ve ever written about and probably the most pathetic blowhard in the world … While I would not claim we are very close friends, he was always my punching bag, which is something I desperately need at this point in my career.”

As for Mike Lowell I have been reading up on what makes him so great at Fenway and I was surprised how different his stats were at Fenway vs other parks. Based on what I have read he deserves 8 million a year and no more. I wouldn’t go higher then 8 if its a four year deal but would go as high as ten million if it was a three year deal. Look at me throwing around the Red Sox money like it’s mine.lol

Nothing beats experience– and your wisdom in guiding your own contract shows that. Congratulations to you both for demonstrating immense character and restraint in these days of hostage-level salaries that have propelled compensation to stratospheric levels. Maybe we should be examining why we don’t pay people who cure chronic disease in them pay zone.
What people may not know is that your ALS work embraces the smaller, grassroots contributions of families of equally-steadied commitment but of a lesser profile. Every year you’ve been kind enough to donate some memorabilia to the annual Brian Cody Memorial Golf Tournament for the MA Chapter of ALS (http://home.comcast.net/~brianstournament/WebFoundation.htm) which we’ve attended for years at Glen Ellen CC. No flash and dash, just a quiet but important gesture in solidarity for a worthy cause. Thank you to both for what you do individually to enlighten people about important issues– not as celebrity “window dressing” but as wholly-committed people to these causes.
Please tell Shonda that the M-towns hope to see her more! Let’s come up with some new knitting projects for charity. We hope you have Mike Lowell’s ear. And no, we don’t need NYY’s 3-base cast off. It’s nice you and Youkilis and papi and Manny are all sticking up for the return of Mike Lowell but every time one of you opens your mouth it drives the price up which in turn might be driving Mike Lowell to the Yankees.
I also hope the Red Sox brass use the common sense that re-signed you in making decisions for the return of Mike Lowell. No offense but Lowell is old for a baseball player and we don’t need to pay him 10 million a year for four years.

It made me incredibly happy to learn that you re-signed with the Sox. Perhaps I am going to far, but it seems to say a lot about the integrity and ethics of the game, at least as represented by you and the Red Sox.
2004 and 2007 answered the questions: What have you done for me? and What have you done for me lately? Nobody else in baseball in recent memory can answer those questions better than you can. Two World Series wins in four years – what a performance.
2004 – you gave us a great season of hope and
2004 – an even better post-season
2004 – risking your career for the Red Sox in the playoffs
2004 – playing hurt, playing through pain, yet dominating
2005 – paying for the sacrifices you made in 2004
2006 – reinventing yourself
2007 – struggling with injury during the regular season yet still able to win games and even throw a one hitter
2007 – post-season heroics beyond anything we could have hoped for
You are a true sports hero and we are blessed to have you with us for another year.

Congratulations on the deal, and on the World Series. The Sox have proven to be not just a flash in the pan, but truly the best team in baseball. It should be interesting to see what next year brings, especially if the team goes with a 6-man rotation.
Thank-you for not dragging this out and making Red Sox Nation suffer any longer. The free agent market is a crazy one this year, and it just makes everyone feel better knowing you’ll be back in Boston next year.
It sounds like the whole team is on board with re-signing Mike Lowell. How much influence does that have with the Front Office?

You’re contributions on the field speak for themself, but your invaluable knowledge and experience will be tremendous for our young arms.
I am a season ticket holder with the NH FisherCats (Toronto) so I get to see the Portland SeaDogs a lot. I’ve seen Justin Masterson and Michael Bowden. They have great potential. When you see them in Spring Training, please share some of your wisdom with them. I think you’ll agree that they have great potential also, but they are still, obviously very young.

Curt, it was great to hear that you will be back in Boston next season. Too many times in the past the Sox have let guys like you “walk” (Fisk, Evans, Lynn, etc) that should have retired as Red Sox. Your imprint on Boston will be felt for many years after you retire (no fat jokes Tito) and with that being said lets hope the Hall allows you to wear a Red Sox cap on your plaque in Cooperstown. Regardless of what uniform you have worn in the past you will always be a Red Sox in the eyes of the Nation.

Curt, this is today’s post from my Big Man Getting Smaller blog at dedicated to you and your mission:
2 million reasons to cut back to 2,300 calories
If you’ve ever wondered why there have been so many mentions of the Red Sox on this blog that is supposed to be about losing weight, yesterday the planets came into perfect alignment and the question was answered.
According to his “38 Pitches” blog, 40-year-old pitcher Curt Schilling agreed to a 1-year contract to remain with the Sox Monday night, and the contract includes a $2 million weight incentive.
Yes, $2 million. All he has to do for that $2 million is “make weight” at 6 randomly scheduled weigh-ins during the course of the year.
What a country, hmm? It does make good sense both for the player and the team, and my guess is that it will make a big difference in helping Schill to meet the other key incentive in his contract, which parcels out up to $4 million as he hits certain levels in innings pitched.
So, many people might be a little envious here and lament the fact that we all can’t pick up a serious check just by having a salad or two, I am a caring, giving spirit (and a Sox fan for lo these past 50 years).
My mission here is to offer some assistance.
The challenge for Curt, I think, is the challenge that I’ve faced and so many men face when they are at that cusp between the end of their serious “jock” career and, er, whatever it is that comes afterward. Curt’s facing it at 40, whereas most men face it in their 20s or 30s.
You believe that you can work your way back into shape just by punishing your body in the gym, on the field, etc. Changing what you eat is only a minor consideration. You think you can cut back on a beer or two, drop the desserts (at least until after midnight), and cover for it all by burning off a thousand calories a day at the gym. A guy who is in pretty good shape can make that work for a while, but he runs the risk of overtraining, especially when his body is beginning to break down a little bit to begin with.
So here’s what Curt needs to do. He’s 6′4″ and he will turn 41 a week from today. Although his baseball bio says he weight 215, I suspect that’s what he weighed when he was photographed for this 1988 New Britain Red Sox baseball card. My estimate is that he goes 275 to 280 now.
At 275, with moderate exercise, his basal metabolic rate to maintain that weight is 3,822 calories a day. If he cuts 1,500 calories a day from that figure, he can still eat over 2,300 calories a day, which allows for plenty of good steaks, chicken and seafood and even an occasional dessert or beer. (One or the other, not both).
It’s not rocket science. It’s that simple.
Do the math, dude.
At that rate, he’ll lose 3 pounds a week (1500 x 7 / 3500 = 3) between now and mid-February, when pitchers and catchers report to Spring training. He’ll weigh 235 then, he’ll look great, and he’ll be ready to pitch. He’ll still be strong as a bull, and he’ll have a little extra jingle in his pocket.
If he keeps it up through the season, he could get down to his rookie playing weight by the World Series and then in 2009, his first year of retirement, he’ll be able to run the Boston Marathon with his lovely wife Shonda. Which will no doubt lead to another bloody sock.
The real benefit would be long-term, of course. Like me, Schill has a choice between going through the rest of his life as a load or as a healthy, relatively fit guy. As my friend Nick has mentioned, being 6′4″ or 6′5″ can cover for you only for a while. I fully expected to start seeing Schill at Subway and BoLoco when I am there to pick up my calorie-counted subs and burritos.

As a lifelong Sox fan born in Berkshire county Mass. , living in Yankee country outside Albany, NY , I say “Way to go!”. I’m glad to hear that you signed with the Sox. Perhaps only interesting to me, but “38″ our ‘family’ number. My dad’s HS football jersey # and his stockcar # from his days owning a car at Lebanon Valley Speedway just outside Pittsfield, Mass were “38″. My 4 kids have all played club soccer and all wear “38″. It’s on my dad’s headstone. My brother Pete has a framed, signed jersey of yours in his rec room.

As an orthopedic and sports P.T., with 30 years experience, I admire the brilliance in structuring your deal so that you have the motivation and dedication to train harder physically now as you age, to maintain and increase your physical skill sets. It is common knowledge in our field that you have train harder each year just to stay the same, nevermind get stronger, faster, lighter, and have better endurance while preventing injuries than you did previously. It´s like climbing an inverted pyramid.
Your commitment to this next year will probably insure your trip to Cooperstown, if you haven´t already had your ticket punched by virtue of your two World Series championships here, after your already storied career in Philly and Phoenix. Your legend will keep growing in Boston and you´ll be worshipped here forever, until your next stop as the next senator from Massachusetts when Ted K. retires.

Mere words can not express how happy I was to read this news this morning. Had been feeling fairly blue as I tore a ligament in my left leg and it’s playing havoc with work and my other responsibilities. So seeing the headline online this morning just gave me the biggest grin. My kids will be thrilled when they hear the news.
Congrats to Curt and his family, but also to the Sox for doing what was right. And yes, now sign Mike Lowell!

Phewww!!! What a relief! That was a thrilling few days. Thanks for keeping us clued in as to what was truly going on with your free agency. Best of luck to you in regards to the weight issue. Curt, I’m very sad you aren’t returning to the Phillies family. I wonder why you would embarrass yourself with less money, and such degrading things as a weight incentive. It saddens me that your heart is with a team you’ve only been with for 4 years, not with the team you spent a majority of your career with. Unfortunately it seems like World Series wins are all that matters to some athletes, and not their history. Good luck, but I expect you will see much more bench time as a Red Sox this year.

Congrats Curt!!! Good to have ya back for another year, and hopefully another pennant. This is Jason over at McFarlane. I want to thank you for once again helping my beloved Sox win the World Series; for a second time. I was able to make it back home to Boston for game 6 of the ALCS to watch you pitch. I was up in the stands behind the John Hancock sign and had a great view of the whole field for what was an awesome game. Wish I could have been there for game 1 against Colorado, but alas I needed to get back to the office to help Todd make more cool toys…hahaha. Thanks again for the gift as well, I truly appreciate it. I had it with me at the game and wore the thing for each and every one. Felt like it was a bit of good luck, and it seemed to work wonders as far as I could tell. Anywho, here’s to another great year at Fenway. Hope to see you out here in AZ sometime soon. Take care.

Congratulations AND thanks, Curt–this is GREAT news!! My college students heard another round of “Tessie” over the classroom speakers as they filed in yesterday–even the brave soul who handed in his midterm a couple of weeks ago with “GO ROCKIES” written across the top. Now I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Mike!
Since this is the first time I’m commenting on one of your posts, I could write a book with all the things I’d like to say, but I’ll keep it short: I wrote my Master’s thesis on what was then The National D-Day Museum, and The National World War II Museum is a major focus of my doctoral dissertation. If I weren’t teaching on Friday, I’d surely be in NOLA for “When Baseball Went to War”–I don’t know how much more perfect a conference could get for me. But ah well–I teach because I love it, so I can’t really complain even if I’d rather be away for just that one day to hear my favorite member of the NWW2M Board of Trustees speak on one of my favorite topics.
Thanks again for all the magic–the heart and drive and dedication that you and the rest of your teammates have displayed continues to inspire me, and I’m already looking forward to watching you next year. I hope that you and your family have a warm Thanksgiving together!!

Your work on and off the mound is astounding, and I strongly believe that with you’re guidance not only do you make us a better rotation on the days that you start, but also on days when you don’t. I think Jon Lester, Clay Bucholtz, and Dice-K really have a lot they can learn from you. THANKS, dude! We’re all looking forward to next season. I’m happy that you and your family will be spending a lifetime with us.
There is another huge benefit to this which you may not yet realize. The weight thing. Take it very SERIOUSLY, man! I’m 50 now and up until the time I was 40, I never had to worry about it. I ate eveything and never got tired. By the time I was 45 I ballooned to nearly 240 lbs. In the last 3-5 years I came down with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.
They immediately put me on the meds, which helped a little, but nothing made a difference until just this year when I have finally gotten back to 195 lbs. through a lot of miserable dieting and exercise. It really sucks, but you gotta do it.
At this point they have cut back the meds to the minimal amount and I appear to have gotten my life back. The only thing I do know that is bad for the old ticker is watching too many late night elimination games. LOL
Just do it, dude. And not just for the upcoming season, but for the long haul. Your family will certainly be glad you did.

I love to see the haters come out to try and douse the celebration, simply because they’re haters and have nothing else better to do. I have a suggestion… Go onto a Yankees board and vent there, cry and weep there.
Curt, my kids were even excited when I told them you’d be in a Red Sox uniform next year and they are 10 and 6 years old, much smarter than these haters that post their diatribe because their team didn’t win the WS or make the playoffs even, or were bounced by Sox… bitter, bitter people need to go elsewhere to cry in their champagne, a la Ryan Garko.
I can’t wait, to see you pitch another postseason next year, re-signing the key people like Mike Lowell will only ensure that we get there again.
Congrats Curt, and let Theo know if he wants to give me $2M reason to lose a little weight, I’ll be down to negotiate!

The announcement of your signing made my day! What a great feel-good story amidst the normal greed and egos that usually accompany contract negotiations. This may have been your first free agency, but in my book you handled it like the pro that you are.

Great Job on your contract, a very wise move regarding the weigh in. As a Retired Mass. Special Investigator we had that yearly weigh in our contract also. That “Fat Money” as we called it paid our personal car insurances. With your will , drive and stamina to win, that should be a breeze for you, coupled with Nutri-System as an if needed “Closer”. I’m glad you staying with us. I had a feel that this year the Red Sox was going to win. My father was a real fan and he got me hook up on baseball and the Red Sox when I was a little girl. My father used to visit me every year during the summer but in 2004, he came in the fall and we both got to see you guys win the WS in 04. This year he passed away a day after father’s day.A couple a weeks after my father died I had a feeling you guys were going to win again, and I’m glad you guys did. My father used to tell me that you are a good pitcher Curt. He was a pitcher himself in Puerto Rico when he was younger. Well Thank you for making a good year for me after my big lost I know he is smilling down from heaven.
By the way please Theo needs to resign Lowell!!!!!! and tell the rest of the guys that we are all proud of them for the great work they did this year.

I just got done reading your blog (my first ever!) and had to tell you how I feel. When you signed on with the Sox a few years ago, my husband told me what a good thing this was. At that time I didn’t pay as much attention to the contract negotiations, free agent status, etc. Then I was driving to work and the radio station was interviewing this woman, Shonda Shilling. She had such wonderful things to say about this new team Curt would be playing for and how great the people were treating them, etc. I called my husband and told him what an awesome interview it was and how gracious she was. Which brings me to today, I just had to tell you how much class you have! You have always carried yourself with dignity on and off the field. Taken it all in stride, stood behind your team mates, and made me VERY proud to be a Red Sox fan! Thank you, for being such a class act!

I would have understood and respected a decision that brought you elsewhere, but it is fantastic to see someone in professional sports stay true to his word and make the right thing happen for himself and for his fans. I have four year old twins who are just beginning to grasp the concept of team sports. I can’t wait to have them watch you pitch next year and understand what it means to be a team player and not a mercenary who seeks nothing but a payday from the highest bidder. i am so pleased that you and your family are staying with the sox and in boston.
you schillings are such a class act.
i met you only once, curt, a million years ago in rochester when you were with the rochester red wings.
the day before opening day, several of us were out at old silver stadium to choose our season ticket seats (i manage a couple of radio stations- we broadcast the red wings). and not being able to decide, i asked this guy practicing on the field if he wouldn’t mind jumping into the stands to help us make the decision. that player was you. and you did it cheerfully. and we held those seats until they tore the stadium down.
you probably don’t remember it…but 20 or something years later, i still remember it…and remember how great a guy were were that day…and still are today.
curt, you’re much more than a great ballplayer…you’re a wonderful guy…and blessed with an incredible wife and family.
i am very happy for you…and for all sox fans.

I was super excited to hear that you signed your last contract with the Red Sox. I’m glad to know that there are still athletes out there that have respect for not only the fans but also for each team and town that they play for.
Hopefully I will be lucky enough to finally see you in action next season!

Curt, I’ve left a response for you already, so I don’t really care if this post ever sees the message board. But I wanted to write something that I hope you see or somone on your staff will get to you.
I wanted to thank you. Thank you for your integrity & your honesty. You said you wanted to stay in Boston, you said that was where you wanted to spend your final year & retire. You then did what was needed to help move along the process of staying in Boston. Personally, as a life long Sox fan, I am thrilled that you are coming back next year & am thrilled that you will retire as a Red Sox & hopefully go into the Hall of Fame as a Sox.
In this day & age when most professional atheletes are out for the money only, it is refreshing to see a player make the decision about where to play based on something other than soley money.
It can sometimes get disheartening as a fan to see players caring only about the money. At times I wonder if the players still have a love of the game, or just of the money that they earn.
Thank you for the kind of example you set for what the players in the REd Sox organization should be. The Sox are the best team in MLB & it’s my opinion that the Sox have the best players in MLB.
I am glad that you will continue to play in Boston & that you and your lovely wife Shonda will be continuing your good work through your charities and your work with ALS and for skin cancer. The example you set goes beyond your priority to your family & their needs first to the example you set through your charity work. The people who you work with will be forever grateful for your kindness.
I wish I lived close enough to see you pitch next year on the way to another World Series next year! Unfortunately, as a former New Englander now living in Idaho, I will be able to be at Fenway in spirit only!

Thank you for walking the walk – not just talking the talk. I was so sure you were gone. I couldn’t see the Sox spending $13 million on a pitcher over 40 who was on the DL for an extended period last year. Not that you don’t bring something to the team, but given what they have in the pipeline, this would not be money well spent. This appears to be the perfect solution for everyone – the money is there if you can meet the goals. Thank you for being so reasonable. As long as we can sign Lowell, we get to see this team mostly still intact in 2008 – and what fun that will be!! Can’t wait – thank you, thank you, thank you!

We are so happy that you re-signed with the Red Sox. You are truly a leader on the team and need to retire as a Red Sox. The young pitchers on the team such as Bucholz and Lester will have a great advantage with you there as you will be able to guide them and give them many pointers, not just on pitching, but how to be a team player and to always give your best in a game and to the community. Thank you for making a deal that would allow you to finish in Boston. And we know you’ll be able to keep that weight off—you’ve proved you can handle any situation. Congratulations!!!

Arod said a zillion times how much he loved the Yankees, and problably he will be gone next year, unless he cant get a deal anywhere else, them will be forced to lie for another year to the “beloved” bronx fans.
Damon left behind thousands of fans that loved him here, sold a nice home in Brookline, and for some insignificant extra cash from Steinbrenner, poor Damon sold his identity, even his bear, losing respect and another world series ring.
Curt; even some people keep saying that he gives too much information about his life and his ideas, proved being a man of dignity, giving priority to what is more important; Family.

We all knew you would have got more years and morE $ in Philly but you chose here..bravo. Dear Curt -
You are the greatest, I love seeing you pitch and don’t care what CHB says about you. But I believe you did yourself and the Sox a disservice by signing back up.
Sure, you will help the team win, and certainly you stand to improve the quality of the pitchers around you. But so can Beckett.
You had the chance, if you wanted it, to become an embedded Sox with another team. You could have signed with the Yankees and immediately embarked on a program of binge eating combined with no exercise ever. You could have gone out there and gotten your lifetime ERA up to like 8 in a single season then hurt your back so you could never play again while still taking $100mil out of their payroll over 4 years. It would have been a win win win situation, where the Sox win because you give their batters nothing but hanging fastballs, you win because you get to do whatever you want because your contract is guaranteed and the Yankees deserve to lose, and the Yankees win because they get someone else to blame their failures on.
Here’s hoping you stay around another 5 years, we all know you have it in you.

NOW, the thing we fans can look forward to is your final contracts after you “retire” from the mound, then, as a Red Sox Pitching Coach.
The kids coming up will benefit from your skills and your loyalty.
You are a credit to your family, your team and your fans. And still later, in your dotage, we will all be honored to see you sitting at the end of the bench, like Johnny Pesky, giving moral support to your team.

It makes me real happy that you are staying with the red sox. I really enjoyed watching you last season. The one-hitter in Oakland was a fun game to watch.
It also gives me a good feeling when you are on the pitching staff. I know you will deliver your best performance and that means a lot of wins for the red sox.

The team and the fans owe you so much and your attitude about this has been outstanding. You are truly an asset to the team not just as a pitcher but as a veteran to continue to help mold the rotation and upcoming starters. I didn’t know that the Phillies fans were so disappointed that you re stayed with the Sox. I guess they wanted you as much as we do. Being a die hard sox fan, I really appreciate the ardent fans of the old time teams like the Phillies, the Cardinals and the Cubs. Whenever the Sox aren’t in the playoffs I root for these old time teams to win it. I hope someday that the Phillies and the Cubs will win a world series. I’ve been to games in both cities, and their fans are wonderful. I’m a fan of the Red Sox, but more than that, I’m a fan of baseball. So I know now that the Phillies fan are disappointed and I wish them all the best.
